Strasburg-Heisler Library will celebrate start of summer reading

It will be a summer reading celebration, and everyone is invited.

Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., will hold its Summer Reading Program kickoff party on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held outside in front of the building, weather permitting. It will be canceled if there is inclement weather. The library will provide its regular services during its normal Saturday hours, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s a good time to start off summer by getting kids involved with reading,” Strasburg-Heisler Library director JJ Landis said. “It’s a lot of fun for the community.”

There will be a bounce house sponsored by Paradise Station (The Red Caboose Motel, Casey Jones’ Restaurant, and The Barn at Paradise Station). Joe on the Go Coffee Co. and Penny’s Ice Cream Truck will have beverages and tasty treats for sale. Strasburg Fire Company will bring a truck for photo ops, and officers from the Strasburg Borough Police Department will be on hand to interact with kids.

There will also be giveaways, cornhole, and a giant bowling game. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will have a table,

and the Strasburg Seniors will provide kids with a chance to “Read With a Grandma.”

Bluey, the tireless blue puppy

from the eponymous television series, will make an appearance.

“The main goal is to get kids to sign up for the Summer Reading

Program, so we will help with that,” Landis said.

The Summer Reading Program, with the theme “Color Our World,”

Organizer Brian Barr noted that the Strasburg Memorial Day Parade serves as a reminder of why the commemoration is consequential.

“The importance comes from the fact of what the holiday is all about,” said Barr, who is the parade chairman for the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, which sponsors the event. “Memorial Day, when it was started after the Civil War, began to honor those who gave the last full measure: They died in battle. I think it’s very, very important to remind people what the holiday is all about. Yes, it’s nice to have a picnic. It’s nice to have hot dogs and hamburgers and open the swimming pool up and do all those things. But also, keep in mind what the holiday is all about. The educational purpose is very important to me.”

The annual parade, in its 78th year, will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 26. Participants will begin forming along Clearview Drive at 9 a.m. The commemoration will conclude with a service at

Rock Ford to host chamber ensemble

Historic Rock Ford will welcome the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble for “Baroque on the Piazza” at the General Edward Hand Mansion on Tuesday, June 3, at 6 p.m. The ensemble will present Vivaldi’s Double Trumpet Concerto in C Major, as well as works by Handel, Telemann, Corelli, J.S. Bach and more. The Ephrata Chamber Ensemble was started by local harpsichordist Faith Martin of Ephrata. After studying the harpsichord for several years, Martin realized that she most enjoyed using this instrument in collaboration with other musicians, which led her to organize the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble.

Her sister Mercy on the violin, her brother Clayton on the cello, and several musician friends and vocal soloists will join her to

Seating on the lawn in front of the piazza of the Hand Mansion is on a firstcome, first-served basis. Guests should bring their own chairs. Blankets are not recommended so that everyone may have a good view of the ensemble on the piazza.

Organizations renew partnership

Leaders from Circle Legacy Center and Mennonite Life signed a new memorandum of understanding on April 8 at the Lancaster Longhouse, renewing their commitment to partnership. The signing of the memorandum provided an opportunity for the organizations to reflect on their years of partnership and to look forward to future collaboration.

Circle Legacy Center is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering local Native Americans through education and community representation, honoring both enduring traditions of the past and contemporary cultures.

The 1719 Museumone of Mennonite Life’s museums - offers tours

The event followed an evening gathering at the 1719 Museum where representatives of both organizations exchanged stories, gifts, and words of gratitude and intent.

of the Lancaster Longhouse and the 1719 Herr House, exploring the interconnected histories of Lancaster County’s early Susquehannock-Conestoga and related peoples and Swiss-German Mennonites who immigrated in the 18th century.

The organizations have worked in partnership since 2007. Joint ventures include the annual Maize and Snitz Fest at the 1719 Museum and Lancaster Longhouse and public relations at local indigenous cultural events, such as the Lawilowan American Indian Festival and at Blue Rock Heritage Center events.

The Lancaster Longhouse was an early shared effort, built in 2013 and born from the 2010 Honor and Healing service hosted in Lancaster. The service brought together local religious groups and indigenous communities to acknowledge historic wrongs committed against native peoples. Circle Legacy Center labored alongside Mennonite Life to create the longhouse as a space for education and

cultural connection and exchange.

Some of the gifts shared in the Lancaster Longhouse on April 8 - pots of beebalm - symbolized the intertwined history of the land beneath the structure and its cultural communities. The native herb has been used by both indigenous and Swiss-German cultures for a variety of culinary and medicinal purposes.

MaryAnn Robins (left), board president for Circle Legacy Center, was present to watch Heather Strahin (center), administrator of the 1719 Museum, and Joann McLaughlin, vice president of Circle Legacy Center, sign the new memorandum of understanding.

Lancaster Rec slates esports programs

Lancaster Rec has announced summer esports programming at the Rodney Park Community Center, 14 Rodney St., Lancaster, a state-ofthe-art facility dedicated to esports.

The campus will host the Esports Maker’s Lab Summer Camp, open to youths ages 10 to 17. The camp will be a full-day, hands-on experience in gaming, esports, and maker skills. Campers can choose from options like the Esports Streamer Bootcamp and Brand & Build Camp, focusing on skills such as laser engraving, 3-D printing, and shout casting - the practice of

providing live commentary and analysis during competitive gaming.

The center is also available for rentals, including themed birthday parties and gaming group rentals.

The center’s equipment, including desktop gaming computers, green screens,

laser engravers, and 3-D printers, was provided through the support of the PNC Foundation, United Way of Lancaster County, and the Lancaster STEM Alliance. Launched in 2023, the esports program provides inclusive, competitive, livestream gaming

opportunities, as well as introductions to coding and computer programming.

For more information about Lancaster Rec’s esports programs, including registration details and facility rentals, visit www.LancasterRec.org/ Esports.

the Strasburg Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. If it rains, the parade will be canceled, and the service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St.

Community service organizations, Scout troops, and church groups will take part in the parade, along with the Lampeter-Strasburg High School and Martin Meylin Middle School marching bands. “For Strasburg, it’s a community thing,” said Barr. “I like to say it’s an old-fashioned community parade. It brings us all out together to remember.”

There will be stops on Main Street to honor service members buried in cemeteries at Wesley United Methodist Church and Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church, and the parade will end at the War Memorial in Strasburg Square.

“One thing that is always neat is that people along the parade route go above and beyond to decorate their yards with flags and banners,” said Barr. “I encourage that because it gives a feel of patriotism that we’re trying to remind people about.”

In addition to the

official parade participants, Barr said there are usually tractors pulling decorated wagons and parents pulling wagons carrying their children. Everyone is welcome to take part in the parade, and registration is not required. “You can show up (at 8 a.m.), and we will put you in,” Barr said.

Paul R. Strubel VFW Post 8710 started the parade, and the Sertoma Club took over when the VFW post joined with the Millersville VFW.

Local Scout troops, members of Strasburg’s Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and community members will place flags on the graves of veterans prior to the service.

Following the parade, Strasburg Mayor Bruce Ryder will welcome visitors to the service at the cemetery. Coast Guard veteran Norm Mable will be the featured speaker, and the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will perform.

The ceremony will end with a patriotic sing-along to “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”

“That’s just something to give people a good feeling as they’re leaving,” said Barr.

“The program gives kids a love for the library,” said Landis. “It’s a place (they) can come and check out anything they want and keeps them reading over the summer when they’re not in school.”

Participants read books and complete activities to win prizes donated by local businesses. Casey Jones’ Restaurant at Paradise Station, Strasburg Rail Road, Waters Edge Mini Golf, and Cherry Crest Adventure Farm are among the businesses that have donated tickets for free or at a reduced price.

“It gives kids an incentive to work towards something if they are interested in the prizes,” Landis said.

Kids can also register for the Summer Reading

The library will hold several activities for children in conjunction

Landis said the programs were in jeopardy because of budget cuts

before an anonymous group of philanthropists called Putting Others First came to the rescue. “A partner stepped up and approached us and offered to sponsor children’s programs for a year,” said Landis. “We’re very grateful. They’re wonderful. They are a reminder that there is support for libraries and for the community. That’s a good example for all of us.”

A Civil War re-enactor, Barr stated that the parade and service are “something that’s near and dear to me.”

He explained that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. John Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the

Republic, an early version of the VFW, ordered his men to decorate the graves of those who had given their lives in the Civil War.

“We are here to remember those who, as (Abraham) Lincoln said, gave their last full measure,” Barr said.

Mennonite Life will host a community hymn sing at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, on Saturday, May 31, from 7 to 8 p.m. as part of an

worship. The oldest known Anabaptist hymns are recorded in the Ausbund,

first published in 1564. The songs were written by early Anabaptists imprisoned for their faith in Passau, Germany. In the centuries since, the hymn tradition has grown, shaped by migration, new languages, ecumenical influence and mission work.

The hymn sing will feature song leaders from various Mennonite traditions across Lancaster County, including Mennonite Church USA, LMC and Weaverland Conference. A group of Amish singers will sing the “Lob Lied,” a hymn from the Ausbund and the second song sung at Amish church services.

Group singing will be interspersed with storytelling, exploring shifts in Anabaptist worship throughout the centuries.

The hymn sing is free and open to all. Those planning to attend are encouraged to register and suggest hymns for consideration at www .mennonitelife.org/events.
