SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

“Catch The Spirit” At Summer Music Camp BY MARCELLA PEYRE-FERRY

race Community Church of Willow Street will offer a summer music camp as part of its Outpour Kids program. The weeklong camp, set for Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., will serve children entering first through eighth grades. Children of all experience and ability levels are welcome. “It’s kind of like secular musical theater camp meets VBS (vacation Bible school),” said Katie Wieand, director of Outpour Kids and the children’s music ministry and administrative coordinator for Grace Community Church. “We’re able to help all of them at their different levels grow in their abilities.” The camp will include devotionals, outdoor games, crafts and music. Students will prepare for the performance of a baseball-themed musical titled “Sermon on the Mound! - Catch the Spirit.” All children in the camp will participate in the musical, but for those wishing to perform special solos or speaking parts, there will be advance auditions on Sunday, June 5. Performers will be asked to learn their parts before the start of camp. “Our goal is to build their confidence, musical abilities and stage presence while gaining a knowledge and love for Jesus Christ,” said Wieand. The entire community is invited to attend the free performance of the musical on July 22 at 7 p.m. at the church. In addition, Wieand announced, the Lancaster Barnstormers have invited the Outpour Kids summer campers to perform “God Bless America” before the Friday, Aug. 5, home game against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks. This is the second year that Wieand has led the summer music camp. She has a Master of Music in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Belmont University. She has toured internationally, performing operatic and musical theater roles

in addition to performing locally at the Fulton Theatre and at Sight & Sound Theatre. Wieand pointed out that the Outpour Kids program is offered yearround. In the fall, there is an eightweek Thursday night worship choir, as well as a winter program. “The last worship choir had 80 singers from 24 different church homes,” Wieand said. “It was really giving them an opportunity to grow their talents and take them back and use them in their own church. They come from all over the community. It’s to equip children who have a love for the Lord to use their gifts.” Registration for the summer camp is open now through June 5, with space available for a maximum of 100 students. There is a cost to attend the camp. For those with financial challenges, scholarships are available. “We don’t want any kid to be turned away for any reason,” Wieand said. Grace Community Church is located at 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. To register for the summer music camp, visit www.outpourkids.com. School Launches New Math Program Over a two-month period this spring, a group of teachers, administrators, staff members, and Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) staff members from Lancaster Mennonite School at the New Danville Campus launched a program to encourage math skills gains for second- and third-grade students. The effort started with teachers analyzing the mid-year Acadience math and NWEA MAP Growth assessment data and identifying students’ addition and subtraction fact skills as an area of recommended growth. Working together, the team developed a plan to improve scores for those specific skill areas in each class by the end of the year. Second-grade teacher Sophie Dodge and third-grade teacher Angela Dietzel sought the support of IU13 math consultant Judy Trusz, as well as Lancaster Mennonite librarian Sarah Fichtner and IU13 math specialist Janelle Lammey.

The summer camp will culminate in a musical performance.
