Strasburg Marketing Association Will Debut New Event

Showcasing Strasburg.

That’s the objective of a new monthly happening that will take place in the historic hamlet.

Third in Strasburg will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. the third Friday of each month beginning May 15 and will run through December.

The event is sponsored by the Strasburg Marketing Association (SMA), which is composed of local businesses and civic organizations. During Third in Strasburg, Joe Deevy, the president of the Strasburg Heritage Society, will be seated on a bench discussing history with interested visitors.

“Strasburg is rich in history, and each month will feature a new story and location for the story bench,” the organization’s Kay Graybill

Farm Bureau Urges Driver Caution on Rural Roads

As temperatures rise and planting season gets underway across Pennsylvania, drivers navigating rural roads should be prepared to share them with large, slow-moving farm equipment.

The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB), along with state government partners, encouraged driver caution during Rural Roads Safety Week from April 12 to 18. Each year, PFB partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), and the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) to raise awareness about staying safe on rural roads during the spring planting season.

Drivers should know that farm equipment can legally operate on public roads, including at night, but must follow safety guidelines based on equipment size. Any vehicle traveling under 25 miles per hour is required to display a Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign - an orange triangle with a red border - on the back of the vehicle. Drivers who see that emblem should slow down immediately.

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities.

One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to

provide and promote natural fun in and around water.

“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out

When following a tractor on the road, it is important to keep the following information in mind: farm equipment may turn at unexpected places, into fields or farm lanes; large equipment pulling to the right may be preparing for a wide left turn; never pass unless the oncoming lane is fully clear and visible; and never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, or tunnel.

For more information, visit www.pfb.com/rural-roads -safety-program.

there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.

As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.

“I really do enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but

we share this love of being on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”

Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations. The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.

“Our general mission is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

Grocery Aisle

The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is operated in one of six geographical regions throughout the commonwealth. The Southeast Region is made up of Lancaster, Berks, Chester, Lehigh, Bucks, Delaware, Schuylkill, Northampton, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and is home to a host of lakes; streams; and major waterways, like the Schuylkill, Delaware and Conestoga rivers.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.

“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming

said. “Participating businesses will stay open until 8 p.m. or later if they already have extended hours and will offer specials and discounts. The goal is to encourage more residents to explore and support Strasburg businesses while discovering everything the town has to offer.”

SMA will also plan scavenger

hunts in conjunction with Third in Strasburg. “The Strasburg Marketing Association is a group of local merchants and organizations with a shared interest in the success and development of Strasburg and the surrounding community,” Graybill said. “We pool resources, share ideas, and support one another in our individual and collective goals as we use our platforms to add life and vitality to our beautiful community.”

Each Third in Strasburg event will be unique. “What businesses offer could be different,” Graybill said. “They could be having a special event at their place, which they wouldn’t have each month, like a music group. I think it’s a fun way to show off our town a little bit with all different kinds of activities going on in all the businesses that belong to the association. We just want people to get out and enjoy your neighbors and learn a little history.”

For more information, email strasburgpa@gmail.com or go to www.strasburgpa.com or the group’s Instagram and Facebook pages. “There will be a link to Third in Strasburg, and then they’ll have a list of all the people that are participating each month. People need to do that in order to find out where to go or what to do or get the deals.”

Deevy’s first story bench activity will take place in the town square at Main and Decatur streets. The topic of his talk will be the origins of Strasburg. “The road through Strasburg started out as a trail for the first people that were here and later became

the Conestoga Road,” he said.

“The first Conestoga wagons went down this road, and the

town grew up here because it was a convenient stopping place between the Susquehanna and

Philadelphia. People needed to stop and rest and stay overnight in taverns. I’m going to talk about those beginnings.”

Deevy’s presentations will have a different theme each month. “I’m going to have a coloring page for kids,” he said. “I’m going to adapt what I’m talking about to the interests of the people who show up.”

The Strasburg Heritage Society has also established a self-guided walking tour of the borough titled Strasburg’s Hidden History. QR codes have been placed in front of historical sites, and people can watch a short video lesson about the location after scanning the code.

The Strasburg Heritage Society has been around since 1972. “We want to use the history of Strasburg as kind of a framework for connecting people, for building community,” said Deevy. “We see Strasburg’s historical assets as something that’s really the Strasburg superpower. Strasburg has all these physical remaining historical assets, and we have this long history, with lots and lots of stories, and the stories that people were building over, the whole history of Strasburg, is still going on today. The people today are living stories that are going to be part of Strasburg’s history, and we’re trying to make that connection and use this to leverage this history asset to build communities.”

There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”

An inland state, Pennsylvania boasts a total of more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.

The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.

“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”
