Haitians Helping Haitians Plans Chicken Barbecue BY COURTNEY MENGEL
aitians Helping Haitians for Christ (HHH) will host its second chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 22. The event will take place at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presales must be picked up by 1 p.m. To prepurchase chicken, visit http://bit.ly/HaitiansBBQ. The event will be held rain or shine. HHH was founded by Elage and Betty Metzler Estime. Elage grew up in the Haitian communities of Montrouis and Charrier. He was raised in a Christian family of eight children, who were still young when their father died. Through a sponsorship, Elage attended Mission Possible School, where he became involved with outreach efforts by using his small allowance to purchase bananas and bread for neighborhood children. After attending Youth With A Mission, Elage focused on serving in Haiti. Betty, a Lancaster County native, met Elage in 2010 when she was part of a medical mission team. They married in 2012. Elage’s ministry has grown and has become multifaceted. Initially, the Estimes self-funded the ministry, but a board of directors was formed to assist them and broaden the support. HHH provides food support for local schools, orphanages, and prisons and runs a feeding program for children. The organization offers English and music classes taught by local teachers. HHH holds yearly seminars for pastors, and it helped a local church acquire land and construct a building. During the summers, HHH hosts camps for children. Additionally, the organization brings North American medical teams to conduct clinics. “All the proceeds (from the barbecue) support long-term solutions for Haitians,” stated Betty. “The money

Beginning Thursday, June 3, the city of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP) will host its 45th annual Red Rose Run. This year’s race will be virtual, and participants can complete their 5 miles in one continuous route or over the course of four days from June 3 to Sunday, June 6. Participants will have the option to walk or run the race and can submit their times for a chance to win awards. Organizers will email the winners once they have been determined. T-shirts will be included in registration, which is currently open. This will be the fourth year that proceeds benefit Lancaster Central Market. When asked why people should participate in the race, Dani Decker, communications manager at Central Market, said, “Because it allows Central Market to continue operating and to continue to be a source of fresh food for Lancaster city and the surrounding counties.” See Red Rose Run pg 6

PCA&D Senior Show Now On Display
LAMPETER STRASBURG EDITION
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) is presenting the artwork of the Class of 2021. The exhibiting work is divided into two pillars of presentation: a digital thesis exhibition archiving each student’s capstone project and a spotlight gallery exhibition that highlights one work from each senior. The gallery exhibition has an accompanying publication which is also available online. Both exhibits gather the individual works of each member of the Class of 2021 into a shared experience, a nod to nostalgia, and a tribute to the collective spirit of the time that characterizes a unique moment in college education. “This is a remarkable and nimble class,” said Michael Molla, president of PCA&D. “They are graduating in a remarkable time and they have proven how resilient, resourceful, deft, and dexterous they are.” The senior exhibition, “Sincerely Yours, the Resilient, the Perseverant, the Tenacious, the Tired, & the Determined,” is on display at PCA&D’s Main Gallery at 204 N. As part of a gallery internship, this exhibit was co-curated by five members of the Class of 2021: Nicole Denzler, Mandi Hall, Alexis Lebesco, Regina Marie Mehaffey, and Rachel Stork. The digital platform was launched as a new annual tradition and innovative approach to providing a greater online presence and exposure for the graduating class. Herrman graduated from the University of Delaware in 2013, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education, agriculture and natural resources, with a minor in engineering technology and a concentration in construction technology. Lancaster County Office of Aging announced dates for voucher distribution in the 2021 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Voucher Program. Each eligible participant will receive vouchers to be used at approved farmers markets to purchase Pennsylvania-grown fruits and vegetables beginning on Tuesday, June 1. To be eligible, seniors must be age 60 by Friday, Dec. 31, live in Lancaster County, and have a household income less than $23,828 for one person or less than $32,227 for two people. Seniors living in personal care or nursing homes are not eligible. Distribution of vouchers will take place in several locations throughout the county. Distribution will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on all dates listed. All sites will be drive-through, unless otherwise noted. Due to COVID-19 and safety requirements, senior centers will not distribute the vouchers at any other time this year. Eligible seniors may pick up vouchers on Wednesday, May 19, at Pavilion 3, Long’s Park, 1401 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster; Thursday, May 20, at Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Servant Stage will present a staged reading of a new, original musical called “Prodigal” by composer and playwright Tyler D. Hoover. Performances will take place at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 22; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The show will also be available to watch online from Friday, May 28, through Sunday, June 13. The community is invited to attend and be part of the development process of this musical. A limited number of tickets for the in-person performances are available to the public. COVID-19 policies that will be in place include limiting the audience capacity to allow for social distancing and wearing face coverings at all times, per state health guidelines. Hoover is a Lancaster-based composer with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music theory and composition from West Chester University. “Prodigal” is the first fulllength musical he has created. The musical is loosely based on the parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. Hoover said he was looking to find a familiar story that could be retold in an innovative way. The presentation features a cast of 23 local performers, led by Robert Bigley, Zachary Fernback, Caleb Hughes, and Reji Woods in featured roles. The presentations will also include a question-andanswer and talk-back session with Hoover, director Wally Calderon, and cast members after each performance. All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, and tickets for both the in-person performances and online streaming must be reserved in advance by visiting www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.

YWCA Lancaster will launch a 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge on Monday, May 24, as part of a national movement to engage communities in anti-racist work. The challenge will continue on Mondays to Fridays through Monday, June 21. Participants will receive a daily email directing them to three or four activities such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, watching a video, or reflecting on their own personal experiences. YWCA Lancaster staff will host a weekly Lunch and Learn Zoom session on Fridays during the challenge to answer questions and discuss each week’s lessons. The challenge is intended to help participants to discover how racial inequity and social injustice impact their community, to connect with others, and to identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination. Prima Theatre will present a celebratory outdoor concert of the greatest hits of the bands Queen and Journey in “Queen/Journey.” The concert will occur outdoors from a portable stage at 8 p.m. on Fridays, June 11 and 18, and Saturdays, June 12 and 19. The songs will be led by singers Grace Byrnes, who starred as Lucy Harris in Prima’s 2019 production of “Jekyll and Hyde”; Broadway-credited Donovan Hoffer; and Asia Littlejohn, who has performed around the world. A live band will bring the music to life with rock ‘n’ roll theatricality. “Queen/Journey” will take place in the large parking lot at Liberty Place behind the Lancaster Barnstorners’ stadium, located on Prince Street in Lancaster. Arena-style audio, lighting, and special effects will be in play. The location is handicapped-accessible. Safety protocols are in place, including a distanced circle chalked on the ground for each party. Patrons should bring lawn chairs. On-site lavatories will be available. These loan programs are designed to help farmers purchase and operate family farms. Softball Pushes Winning Streak to 15 Straight

The Lady Pioneers ran their winning streak to 15 straight, defeating West York 18-2 and Cocalico 9-2. They are the only undefeated team in the league in section play and sport a 13-1 overall record. In non-league action Saturday, May 1, L-S pounded out 20 hits over six innings and crushed West York 18-2. Tied at 3-3 after three complete innings, L-S started to pull away with a five run fourth and then ended all doubts with an 11-1 sixth. Chloe Blantz (4-4, 2RBI) and Cam Byler (2-4, 2RBI) both connected for home runs. Kieva Middleton, who struck out eight, walked two and scattered three hits, helped her cause at the plate, going 4-4. Emily Platt, Brooke Zuber, and Sydney Weichler all added two hits. Blantz, in her first varsity pitching action, relieved Middleton in the sixth inning. She faced five batters and struck out three. Last Tuesday they needed seven innings but defeated Cocalico 9-2 with an outstanding effort from Blantz. The senior went 3-4 with a pair of three-run homers and seven RBIs. She also went the distance in the circle, fanning 13 batters, walking two and scattering three hits. Cam Byler, Ally Raub and Morgan Whitaker added two hits each. TRACK With a dominating performance from the distance team and three wins by Teagan
Weaver, the Pioneers remained undefeated on the year with a hard-fought 81-69 win at Manheim Central last Monday. The distance boys, with Colin Whitaker, Ben Devine, and Nate Eberly in the mile and 3200 and Whitaker, Arik Harnish and Luka Vranich in the 800, swept the Barons. Harnish and Vranich placed in both the open 400 as well as running in the winning 4x800 relay with Whitaker and Eberly and the 4x400 with Marty Brenneman and Eberly. “Arik ran a 52.2 in the 400 and ran an even faster 400 in the third leg of the 4x400 to erase Manheim’s lead,” noted head coach Cal Esh. “And our throwers came through against a strong Central throwing team. The boys rose to the occasion.” Aiden Jones and Zac Shelley went 2-3 in the javelin, Shelley was second in the shot and Elijah Carr and Jordan Thode went 2-3 in the discus. Plus, David Pritchard added a second in the high, Luke Wiley was second in the pole vault and Christian Otto took third in the 300 hurdles. Weaver’s hat trick featured top times in the 100 and 200. He won the long jump on his final leap and was second in the triple. “The girls team also gave a good effort but fell short 89-61,” said Esh. Maggie Swarr continued to lead the throwers, winning the shot and javelin, and taking third in the discus while Jada Willard added a second in the shot and was third in the javelin.

Connor Nolt, back in action, tallied a game-high six goals, Barrett Denlinger netted four, Stewart McClain added three and Collin Sullivan rounded out the multiple goal scorers with 2. At home last Monday, a 4-0 third quarter extended Lampeter’s 8-6 first half advantage and gave the hosts some breathing room in a 16-9 win over LCD/LC. Jack Filius contributed one goal and one assist. “Going into the season, I believed if healthy and committed to playing fundamentally sound lacrosse, we would battle for the section title,” head coach Mike McConomy said. “We have
a great group and are back to full strength.” The Pioneers used a strong second half to pull away, extending their 6-4 halftime lead with five goals in the third and a 2-0 advantage in the fourth. Bryce Thomas, with 16 saves, highlighted the defense while Labreque’s four goals and three assists led the attack. Nolt (2a) and McClain chipped in with hat tricks, Filius (1a) scored twice and Denlinger once. BASEBALL With the end of the regular season just one week away, every game is a tune-up for playoffs. The Pioneers came up with a big win Saturday morning, May 1, handing Manheim Central, the top team in Section Three, its second loss of the season. The 42 result featured seven hits by the Pioneers and a pair of Baron miscues. After a scoreless first, L-S got on the board when two out doubles by Isaiah Parido and Xander Getchis (2-2, 1RBI) made it 1-0. One inning later they scored two more. The Barons made things interesting in the fifth, scoring one run and cutting the lead to 3-2. Determined, L-S scored again in the sixth on a pair of walks and a two out base hit by Gehrig Harsh and then denied the Barons in the seventh. Jack Swarr struck out four, walked three and gave up three hits over five innings and Harsh finished out the game, striking out three and yielding one hit.

Last Monday the Pioneers improved to 6-1 and remained on top of the Section Two standings with an 11-4 final at Elizabethtown. L-S used ten hits, took advantage of five errors, and opened with a five run first inning. Alex Knapp, Braedon Karpathios (2RBIs) and Caleb Guyer (2RBIs) accounted for six of the team’s ten hits. Peyton Harsh struck out four, walked five and gave up two hits over five innings. Jason Long pitched two innings of relief, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out two. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Lampeter’s five game win streak ended Thursday, April 29 in Lampeter as the home team suffered an 18-5 loss to the top team in the league, Manheim Township.
The Pioneers, who have scored just nine goals fewer than the Streaks for the season, got off to a slow start and never recovered. But L-S shook off that loss by racking up 24 goals last Monday night against LCD/LC. It was the sixth time this season they scored 20 or more goals in a win as they held the hosts to six. And while leading scorer Rowen Kimmel pushed her season total to 63 goals with a team high six goals and five assists, the Pioneers had a balanced attack with nine other players contributing. Hat trick totals were had by both Riley Dawson and Hannah Gawne while Jeslyn Krebs (4a), Kelliann Drummond (1a), Kelly Hostetter (1a), Malaina Bauson (1a) and Joselyn Saurbaugh each scored twice with Hannah Cissne and Olivia Poley chipping in with one. “We could get a seven, six or maybe five seed in districts but we have to take care of our own business and see what shakes out with the teams above us: Palmyra, Red Land and Susquehannock,” said head coach Marshall Krebs.

Camp Cadet Will Continue BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Since 1970, Camp Cadet of Lancaster County has provided youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp closed its doors for the summer. Trooper Kelly Osborne, director of the program, said she did not want to let another summer go by without Camp Cadet, so she improvised. From Monday, June 21, to Friday, Aug. 13, Camp Cadet will be held virtually. The program will be developed by and coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Police
with the assistance of local police officers and state and local agencies that work with law enforcement. Over the course of these eight weeks, cadets will complete outdoor activities, community service, physical training, assignments, and quizzes. Throughout the program, cadets will learn about the different facets of law enforcement, including forensics, canine, police training, and the criminal justice system. At the end of the program, there will be an in-person graduation ceremony where cadets will receive their own uniform. Awards will also be given at the end of the program to cadets who excel in the categories of service, fitness, and knowledge. See Camp Cadet pg 13

nephew of Mulberry Art Studios’ owner, April Koppenhaver. After Milo developed arthritis and needed assistance with stairs, April offered to care for him. He became a fixture at Mulberry Art Studios, as he spent each day there by April’s side. At home, April’s husband, Charles E. “Charlie” Gaul II, especially enjoyed Milo’s company. In November 2018, Milo died at age 16. Less than two months later, 93-year-old Charlie passed away. As a tribute to Milo and Charlie, April started the “ We Love Our Pets” exhibition.

Several museums and historical sites had to temporarily close their doors to the public as a result of the pandemic. One of them was LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Within the past year, the organization used the closure as an opportunity to begin tackling several digitization projects it had wanted to complete for decades. In 2020, LancasterHistory went through the process of digitizing its entire James Buchanan collection, which consists of about 9,000 individual documents. “That process helped us figure out how to individualize projects and seek funding for digitizing pockets of our collection,” explained Robin Sarratt, vice president of LancasterHistory. Recently, LancasterHistory was awarded a Historical & Archival Records Care grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to digitize its collections pertaining to the history of 19th-century congressman Thaddeus Stevens, black residents of Lancaster, and indigenous people since the 18th century. LancasterHistory will use the $4,669 grant to provide online access to 138 items from the Thaddeus Stevens collection as well as 425 documents and

Camp Invention Posted Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, will offer children an all-new, at-home format of the program. Camp Invention challenges students in kindergarten through grade six to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Camp Invention will take place from Monday, July 12, through Friday, July 16, in the Lancaster and Lebanon areas. Camp Invention 2021 will be a hybrid program featuring both offline activities and optional online sessions. The at-home Camp Invention format enables hands-on exploration by delivering an Innovator’s Toolkit of materials directly to each participant. With four themed activities, step-by-step guides and an Innovator Workshop, the program brings imagination,
creative problem solving, and fun to children’s homes. During the at-home sessions, local certified instructors take the campers through the day’s activities, with the children choosing to attend the four daily online collaborative sessions or move at their own pace. Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees. Since 2003, LOHF has awarded more than 200 scholarships, investing more than $800,000 in the education of local nurses.
