Every year, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, recognizes one of its many helping hands as Volunteer of the Year. This individual is selected from a pool of nominees by the Friends of the Railroad Museum, who seek to express their appreciation to a volunteer who has shown extraordinary dedication to the museum and its programs. In March, the Friends’ board of directors named lifetime rail fan Kevin Hale as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year.
back to his adolescent years spent in New York City. Hale inherited his interest in trains from his father, who would often take him on subway trips from Queens to Coney Island to see the vehicles up close. “Most people go to Coney Island in the summer; we’d go any time of year just to ride,” Hale said.
“I’m fascinated by these old machines.”
Hale’s nomination form describes him as “quick to learn, quick to adapt and so friendly and easy-going,” and his commitment to the Railroad Museum over the last five years has been observed by fellow volunteers and visitors alike. But the Brownstown resident’s love for locomotives dates
Hale left New York to attend graduate school in Pennsylvania with the ultimate goal of becoming an ancient history professor. After deciding to tread a different path, Hale moved to Philadelphia to work in the lumber business, but he never lost his love for trains or history; he remained in the lumber industry until his retirement in 2018, and he teaches history and civics courses for homeschoolers to this day. Hale said his passion for history plays a large role in his affinity for trains. “I’ve always loved machinery, but I’m not a

Strasburg is one of many communities in Lancaster County that is rich with historical significance. The town’s origins can be traced back to as early as 1730, when buildings began to pop up near the old Conestoga Road. The road itself began to see regular traffic as early as 1714, and the steady growth of Strasburg’s community was accompanied by the construction of countless historic buildings - many of which

At any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.
Iron Leg is one of the few
organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield,

As a haven for some of the United States’ oldest abodes, Strasburg was recognized by the federal government as a historic district in 1983. Two years later, the town garnered national attention after the release of the film “Witness” starring Harrison Ford, which was filmed on a local farm. Despite the property’s cultural and historical significance, the farmhouse that appeared in the movie was torn down several years ago. To prevent similar unfortunate demolitions in the area, Strasburg Township created a resource list to identify and protect the countless local historic buildings and the wealth of history they contain.
“I believe historical preservation heightens the quality of life in the community,” said Mike Weaver, vice chairman of the township’s board of supervisors. “It represents our community. Strasburg Borough is truly a gem of historic buildings.”
The township’s initial resource list, which was assembled roughly 30 years ago, lacked a comprehensive record of Strasburg’s oldest structures, prompting the board of supervisors to contact the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County to conduct a new survey. This time, the surveyors plan to identify every building built before 1950, adding photographs and updated information
for each one. “We’re looking to identify structures such as houses, barns, farm buildings, lime kilns, stone bridges and other landmarks that are reminiscent of Europe,” Weaver said. Buildings that are included on the historic resource list are less likely to be torn down or otherwise affected by modernization. Contractors who want to demolish buildings on the list must go through a thorough process for permission to do so. While each listed building is not guaranteed immunity from construction projects, it lessens the chance of losing another piece of centuries-old history. Builders must also abide by design requirements set in place by the township to ensure the new building is reflective of Strasburg Borough’s significant cultural history.
“Our desire is to keep the quality of life in Strasburg Township that has existed because of its character and culture,” Weaver said. “We’re trying to maintain the architecture of our rural, farm-oriented township.” Strasburg Township’s board of supervisors is seeking the help of community members to identify local historic buildings for the updated resource list. Anyone who has information on a potentially significant structure and residents who are interested in volunteering may call the township at 717-687-6233.

Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https://ironleg.org/ interest-form.
The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking.
“Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will
allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.
“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www .717shows.com/events/ iron-leg-football-game.

The Friends of Fishing Creek will host a drivethrough event for all Jeep and off-road vehicle owners on Saturday, May 18, in the Fishing Creek Nature Preserve from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will start at Drumore Township Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore, and end at Susquehannock State Park, 1880 Park Drive, Drumore. A free lunch will be provided by a local food truck vendor at the state park.
The Friends of Fishing Creek will host the drivethrough with the help of partner entities such as
Lancaster Conservancy, Donegal Trout Unlimited, Water Quality Volunteer Coalition, and Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Organization. Six stations will be set up during the 3.8-mile ride. At each station, an expert will provide information on aspects of the Fishing Creek watershed.
This event is fami ly-friendly and free of charge. It is funded in part by an $8,000 grant received in 2023 from the Lancaster Clean Water Partners. Providence Autos, a local Jeep deal ership, has also granted $500 as a partner and sponsor of the event. Rep resentatives of the dealer ship will be on-site during the event with the newest Jeep models.
Grant funds allowed the Friends of Fishing Creek to create an event aimed at helping Jeep and other offroad vehicle owners to enjoy and also protect the fragile and sensitive ecosystem of the Fishing Creek watershed. Located in the southern portion of Lancaster County, the watershed hosts fresh water trout, cranes,

As a volunteer, Hale noted his primary duty is to take groups of visitors and students on tours through the museum. When he doesn’t have a scheduled group tour, Hale said, he often oversees pieces of equipment to enhance the experience of guests who filter into the museum. Due to safety risks, visitors are not permitted to enter train cars or get up close to the machinery without a volunteer present. “I feel a responsibility to be there as often as I can. You’ve got to be dedicated to it and give up a Saturday or Sunday sometimes,” Hale said. “You really feel you make a difference.”
According to Hale, train enthusiasts travel from all over the United States and other continents to visit the Railroad Museum, but he is often surprised by how many locals are not
The Lancaster Lions Club recently donated $20,000 to the Lancaster City Fire Department to purchase two new thermal imaging cameras (TICs). Fire Chief Todd Hutchinson demonstrated the new camera at a recent Lions Club meeting. In addition to the two original cameras that were ordered, Hutchinson was able to purchase 10 additional smaller cameras. The larger cameras are used by the unit officers, and the smaller cameras are used by firefighters.
The TICs work by rendering infrared radiation as visible light. Since the TICs can see through darkness or smoke, they allow firefighters to quickly find the seat of a structure fire or see the

Visitors and local residents can use the list to explore 55 experiences featuring SNHA businesses, events, and landmarks in Lancaster and York counties.
Through the bucket list, people can explore the region’s history, including York’s and Lancaster’s brief stints as the nation’s capital, African American and Civil War history, the region’s role in Colonial America as a gateway to the frontier, ghost towns, railroads, the York State Fair, and the more than 25 covered bridges in Lancaster County. Outdoor activities include discovering a nature preserve, finding a waterfall, and being in two
states at once when straddling the Mason-Dixon Line. More than 100 miles of trails and more than 10 scenic overlooks await discovery. People may also learn about the region’s produce, such as the Washington Boro Jet Star tomato, the York Imperial apple, and the native pawpaw fruit. Plenty of produce is available at the area’s farmers markets.
People are invited to share their bucket list experiences by snapping photos and posting them to social media, tagging @SusqNHA in the post. Those who complete at least five items will receive a Susquehanna National Heritage Area sticker.
