Several museums and historical sites had to temporarily close their doors to the public as a result of the pandemic. One of them was LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. Within the past year, the organization used the closure as an opportunity to begin tackling several digitization projects it had wanted to complete for decades. In 2020, LancasterHistory went through the process of digitizing its entire James Buchanan collection, which consists of about 9,000 individual documents. See Digitizing Project pg 3

In May of 2020, Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) began the process of merging. Over the summer, administrators and board members dealt with the legalities of funds transfers and by fall, approvals by local and state agencies had been granted. At the same time, board members were updating bylaws, and the organization was working through setting organizational procedures that would create a single entity working to offer housing advocacy and financial empowerment to area residents.

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in

that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and

Tennies explained that there is a burden on the researcher to locate these materials because they are difficult to find. “That process helped us figure out how to individualize projects and seek funding for digitizing pockets of our collection,” explained Robin Sarratt, vice president of LancasterHistory. Recently, LancasterHistory was awarded a Historical & Archival Records Care grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to digitize its collections pertaining to the history of 19th-century congressman Thaddeus Stevens, black residents of Lancaster, and indigenous people since the 18th century. LancasterHistory will use the $4,669 grant to provide online access to 138 items from the Thaddeus Stevens collection as well as 425 documents and manuscripts from 24 different historic collections pertaining to people of color in Lancaster County. The project will begin in August and is expected to be completed by May 2022. LancasterHistory will work with the Backstage Library Works of Bethlehem to digitize the materials, which will then be uploaded to LancasterHistory’s collections database at https:// collections.lancasterhistory.org. The database is free for public use. “There are a lot of underrepresent-

Tenfold from pg 1 Now, the organization is ready to announce its new name - Tenfold and introduce supporters and those who are less familiar with the work of the organization to the next chapter in the vision for providing affordable housing. On Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., Tenfold will hold a virtual celebration called “Unlocking Opportunity, Multiplying Our Impact.” The event will be hosted by Brian Roche of WGAL TV. According to Mike McKenna, CEO of Tenfold, the event will include a video that tells what Tenfold brings to the community through the experience of a client who benefited from services from what were once Tabor and LHOP. “We will also be talking about the future of this combined organization and sharing what that vision looks like,” said McKenna, who added that a silent auction and two musical performances will round out the hourlong presentation. “There’s a lot of great content, and we are going to keep it moving,” said McKenna. As the merger was happening, COVID-19 restrictions and the resulting impact on clients presented challenges for the organization. “The clients we were serving were really hard hit by the loss of income … which put a lot of households at greater risk of eviction,” said McKenna, who noted that although homeless services were strained, adaptations were made to continue to provide support. In addition, although LHOP personnel had moved into the Tabor building at 308 E. King St., Lancaster, all offices were closed, and employees were working remotely. “We didn’t see clients in person with a few exceptions,” said McKenna. “Most of our counseling and case management was happening through Zoom and phone and text.” Challenges were apparent in bringing the two teams together as well, but regular virtual meetings are addressing those growing pains. “It’s more challenging in a virtual environment, but it has forced us to be more intentional,” stated McKenna. The virtual event will have several goals, according to McKenna. “We want to reinforce to everyone that the programs and services that they have known and cared about are continuing (to address) affordable and financial empowerment through the lens of partnership,” he said. “We value all the partners we work with in the community, and … we see all of that as contributing to the idea that there will be a future with greater equitable housing and financial security.” There is no cost to watch the livestreamed event, and Tenfold invites members of the community to hold watch parties with family members and friends. More details about the Tenfold celebration may be found at www.tabornet.org/ celebration. A link to watch the event will be available on May 11 at www.tabornet.org.

Since 1970, Camp Cadet of Lancaster County has provided youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp closed its doors for the summer. Trooper Kelly Osborne, director of the program, said she did not want to let another summer go by without Camp Cadet, so she improvised. From Monday, June 21, to Friday, Aug. 13, Camp Cadet will be held virtually. The program will be developed by and coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Police with the assistance of local police officers and state and local agencies that work with law enforcement. Over the course of these eight weeks, cadets will complete outdoor activities, community service, physical training, assignments, and

quizzes. Throughout the program, cadets will learn about the different facets of law enforcement, including forensics, canine, police training, and the criminal justice system. At the end of the program, there will be an in-person graduation ceremony where cadets will receive their own uniform. Awards will also be given at the end of the program to cadets who excel in the categories of service, fitness, and knowledge. This year, Camp Cadet has widened the age range so youths

Ascension Academy has awarded its first Instrumental Scholarship to clarinetist Andre Hurst. The academy will provide Andre with a fouryear scholarship to study with Janine Thomas, principal clarinetist of the Lancaster and Harrisburg symphony orchestras. Andre is a ninth-grader at Hempfield High School. In addition to playing in his school ensembles, he was selected for District Band in eighth and ninth grades. He is the first chair clarinetist in the youth chamber orchestra Allegretto, which will perform Beethoven’s 7th Symphony this spring. Andre is frequently invited to play with the Franklin & Marshall College band. He has been studying with Thomas for four years and has played advanced repertoire such as the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Weber Concertino, and Saint-Saëns Sonata. Andre has also played the piano for nine years. He enjoys archery and is a member of his school’s tennis team. Community members may hear Andre play music on Sunday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church’s Music Ministry Sunday, a celebration of music featuring students of the Ascension Academy. The church is located at 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Masks are required during the service. The mission of Ascension Academy is to provide educational programs in the visual and musical arts to students of all ages and levels. Currently, the school offers flute, clarinet, and saxophone lessons provided by Thomas and keyboard and guitar lessons given by the church’s music director, John Zielinski. For more information about the academy, email Zielinski at jzvarious@gmail.com or call 717874-8079.

Debbie and Ken Helm, owners of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, are working with the Quarryville Police Foundation to host a Southern End Love Community event that will benefit the first responders of southern Lancaster County. The event will take place on Saturday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville. In the event of inclement weather, the occasion will take place at the same venue and time on Sunday, May 9. At the event, there will be free admission, food, games, and giveaway drawings. Vendors, mainly local artisans, will be selling cupcakes, jewelry, and more. From 1 to 4 p.m., there will be live music provided by The Shucked Oysters. Attendees will be able to look at police cars, firetrucks, and other emergency vehicles. First responders will offer demonstrations and games as well. Micillicutty the police mini pony will also be in attendance. Britain Hill will release its new semisweet red wine named Southern End Love. A portion of the proceeds from purchases of Southern

End Love will benefit first responders. Wine slushies, wine, and beer will also be available for purchase. “People should attend the event so they can meet their first responders in a relaxed atmosphere as opposed to meeting them in a moment of tragedy,” said Trooper Kelly Osborne. The Quarryville Police Foundation was created last year by Anthony Cavallaro. The foundation consists of a group of community members who fundraise for the Quarryville Police Department’s training and equipment. Proceeds will benefit the Quarryville Fire Company, Robert Fulton Fire Company, Wakefield EMS, the Quarryville Police Foundation, and the Pennsylvania State Police. For more information, contact Osborne at 717-290-1996 or kosbornefil@pa.gov. To stay updated on the event, search for “First Responder Community Event” on Facebook.

The Pioneers rounded out crossover action with mixed results, posting a convincing 101 win over McCaskey April 23 and then dropping a 2-1 final to Hempfield, their third one-run loss of the season and second in three games. They returned to Section Two play last Wednesday with an 8-2 win over CV and lead the Section Two standings at 5-1. The Pioneers scored early and often against McCaskey, grabbing a 6-0 lead after three innings and responding to the Red Tornado’s lone run in the sixth with four in the top of the seventh. Jack Swarr pitched to all but one batter, tossing a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Jason Long struck out the final batter of the game. “Jack did a great job,” lauded head coach Jeff Swarr. “Jason came in because Jack exhausted his pitch count. They combined for a no-hitter.” Alex Knapp was 3-5 with two RBI’s and Braedon Karpathios was 1-5 with three RBI’s. Jake Long, Gio Malatesta, Xander Getchis and Joey Doolittle added two hits each.

L-S took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Hempfield but gave up two in the sixth and suffered a 2-1 loss at home. Knapp was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a Jake Long grounder and scored on a Karpathios base hit. “We struggled to get runners on base after that,” noted Swarr. “Peyton Harsh and Jason Long competed like crazy on the mound and gave us a chance to win. Coming into the season we had zero pitchers with varsity experience. Peyton has had two solid outings, Jason has done his job out of the bullpen, Gehrig Harsh gave us the opportunity to win at Township and Caleb Guyer continues to develop and grow on the mound,” he added. With a 12-hit attack, L-S scored in five of seven innings to hand CV an 8-2 defeat. Knapp was the hitting star with a 3-3 effort. Long and Karpathios added two hits each. BOYS’ LACROSSE In a section with three teams battling for the top spot, L-S moved to 6-1 with wins over Cocalico (12-2) on April 22 and LCD/LCHS (10-6) last Tuesday. Their six-game win streak ended when they dropped a 15-4 nonleague outing against Hershey. “During that streak we were healthy and played strong, fundamentally sound lacrosse,” said head coach Mike McConomy. “Now we are decimated by injuries. We went into the Hershey game with only 14 healthy players.” L-S led from start to finish against the Eagles, scoring four goals in each of the first two quarters and firing 32 shots on goal, while holding the visitors to 14. Stewart McClain racked up six goals and two assists to lead the way. Collin Sullivan (2a) and Chase Barber (1a) each scored twice with Zach Labreque (2a) and Owen Krause adding one apiece. After a 3-3 first quarter tie against Hershey, L-S failed to score in the second and third quarters while the hosts poured in ten goals to take control.

A 5-1 first quarter jump started Lampeter’s 10-6 win over LCD/LC. They also scored four times in the fourth quarter to extend a 6-5 lead. McClain was tops with six goals and Sullivan added four. TRACK In a very tight meet last Monday in New Holland, the Pioneers needed a win in the 4x400 relay at the end of the meet to pull out win over Garden Spot. Jessie Slagado, Maddie Malcolm, Tori Heiserman and Tonna Harnish did just that and L-S escaped with a 78-72 thriller, improving to 3-2 on the year. “It was tight right down to the end,” said head coach Cal Esh. “We won all three relays, which was huge, but we needed that last one to win the meet. The girls ran well.” Heiserman and Harnish along with Molly Wissler and Jaclyn Martin opened the day with a 4x800 win while Madison Weichler, Katelyn Finn, Elly Bruner and Lyndi Wall claimed the 4x100. Wall also earned firsts in the 100 and 100 while Martin was tops in the 800 and mile. “That was Jaclyn’s first time to run the mile so that was big,” noted Esh. In the field, Maggie Swarr led a sweep in the shot with Kelsey McTaggart (2nd) and Jada Willard (3rd) and also won the discus. Other Pioneer winners included Bruner in the long jump and Cam Coleman in the pole vault. The boys’ team remained undefeated with a 110-40 victory over winless Garden Spot. Colin Whitaker, Nathan Eberly, and Ben Devine swept the mile, Luke Wiley, Aiden Wiley, and Mitchell Livengood did the same in the pole vault while Zac Shelley’s PR in the javelin led a sweep there with Aiden Jones and Elijah Carr contributing. Shelly also won the shot put. “That was Zac’s first win ever in the javelin,” said Esh. Teagan Weaver won four individual events (100, 200, long and triple jumps) and Christian Otto controlled both hurdle events to further extend Lampeter’s advantage. TENNIS The tennis team wrapped up their season on a positive note, claiming their second shutout of the year with a dominating effort over Lebanon on April 22. They finish the season at 3-3 in Section Two and were 5-9 overall. Weston Weaver and Jack Harnish won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Reidenbaugh and Kyle Pawson partnered for an 8-1 win at No. 2. Lebanon forfeited the No. 3 doubles match. Weaver went on to post a come-frombehind thriller over photo by Mona Steinhauer Cody Zheng, winning Jack Swarr struck out six in a 10-1, no-hit 5-7, 7-6, 13-11. Reidenvictory over Section One’s McCaskey baugh, Alex Vaziri and Cole Teaman all won in Thursday, April 22 in Lancaster.

On the road Thursday, April 22, the Pioneers’ Andrew Whitehead beats the pickoff attempt at first base in a 10-1 romp over McCaskey.

straight sets with Vaziri posting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girls’ lacrosse team extended its winning streak to five straight with recent wins over Central York (19-5 on April 23), Eastern York (20-6 on April 24) and Cedar Crest 28-5 last Tuesday, moving their overall record to 8-4. Rowen Kimmel spear-headed the victories with a combined 17 goals and six assists. Riley Dawson added 14 goals, Jeslyn Krebs netted seven goals with five assists, Hannah Gawne (7g, 7a), Kellian Drummond (6g, 5a), Kelly Hostetter (4g, 2a) rounded out the top point-getters. Zoe Dilling anchored the defense with a combined 13 saves. SOFTBALL The softball team wrapped up crossover action with a 24-0, three inning win over McCaskey April 23 and last Monday earned an 8-3 come-from-behind win over Hempfield, improving to 11-1 overall. Chloe Blantz opened the McCaskey game with a solo homer and later that inning connected for her fourth grand slam of the year. Sydney Weichler went 1-1 with an RBI walk, a sac fly RBI and a grand slam. Cam Byler, Ally Raub (3 RBIs) and Julia Gerard all added two hits. Ally Raub pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven and walking three. Last Monday in Landisville, loose play gave Hempfield a 3-0 lead after three innings. L-S connected for its first hit of the game in the fifth and did not score until the sixth. Raub’s fielder’s choice plated Byler who walked. They tied the game one inning later and forged ahead with a five run fifth. Weichler came off the bench with a two-run double, and after three straight walks, Keiva Middleton singled in the last two runs of the game. She struck out a seasonhigh 13 batters, walked three and scattered five hits. “Sydney was the hero,” said Charles. “She opened the seventh inning with a base hit, giving us momentum, and then doubled in two more to give us the lead.” The girls remained perfect in league play with Wednesday’s 112 win over CV.

Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) will celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month in May. From Saturday, May 1, to Monday, May 31, a progressive art walk through downtown Lancaster will be held. Community members may take a stroll down North Queen Street, North Prince Street, and Gallery Row and view mental health-themed artwork in the windows of the 30 participating businesses. The progressive art walk will launch MHA’s yearlong antistigma campaign, “We Need to Talk About Mental Health.” On Saturday, May 8, MHALC will host its first-ever virtual walk, Walk Your Way for MHA. MHALC encourages the community to walk, run, bike, hike, swim, kayak, or cartwheel along as MHALC counts the miles for mental health. Participants may do as little or as much as they like and register as an individual or as a team. Participants can compete for medals in different categories. On the day of the walk, participants will share the unique and creative ways they accomplished their goal and text their completed miles so MHALC can update its mile tracker. For more information about upcoming events from MHALC, visit www.mhalancaster.org. For more information about being a contributing artist for the progressive art walk or sponsoring upcoming MHALC events, contact mha@mhalancaster.org.

The Arts at Millersville at the Ware Center will present works of art created by students from the School District of Lancaster during Art Walk, running from Friday, May 7, through Sunday, May 9. Although the building is not currently open to the public, the art will be visible through the windows on the Lyet Lobby at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The School District of Lancaster will exhibit artwork from selected students representing the elementary, middle, and high school art departments. For many years, district schools have been displaying student art works by students from kindergarten through grade 12 as part of Lancaster Art Walk, with Millersville University’s Ware Center being the host in the most recent years. Due to the pandemic, an in-person show was not possible last spring, but some schools were able to host virtual shows. This year’s event marks a return to a physical art show. This exhibit will include a number of digital art projects that have been printed for the physical display, as well as physical art projects, much like the schools have exhibited in the past. To learn more about the art programs offered by School District of Lancaster, visit https://sdlancaster.org /discover-sdol/arts/visual-arts/. More details about the Arts at Millersville are available at www.artsmu.com.
