From the window of Lander Holsinger’s childhood bedroom, he could see the farms and fields that define Pennsylvania’s rural landscapes. But since he was in middle school, Lander’s gaze has been directed upward, toward outer space.
It all began in a basement with a few neighborhood kids building and programming Lego robots. Holsinger became involved in FIRST Robotics, an organization that provides opportunities for teams to compete against and in cooperation with one another while learning the fundamentals of engineering. The scoring system also includes a judging and community outreach element.
In elementary school, Holsinger attended several weeklong summer STEM camps at Millersville University on topics such as
computer-aided design (CAD), Lego Mindstorms, and combustion engines. He asked for a CAD laptop and a 3D printer for Christmas. He also moved up into the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics league, where the robots are more complex and customized.
With access to mentors and industry CAD and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software, Holsinger found his calling on the FIRST FTC scene as a member of the Out of the Box Robotics team from Downingtown. Holsinger designed, built, and drove the team’s robots to several state and regional champi onships and qualified for the FIRST world competition every year. In St. Louis and Detroit, Out of the Box Robotics competed alongside teams from countries around the globe. Participants had just a few hours to strategize with randomly assigned

Scouting America’s current flag offers a fresh, clean look that features a small image of an eagle and the colors of our country. It symbolizes the morals, commitment and tradition that Scouting America stands for.
In this particular instance, the passing, raising and lowering of that Scouting America flag represents the role that Scouting has played in the history of our nation.

Like many creative people, Emily Fritz comes from a crafty family. Her grandfather was a woodworker, but he died before she could learn from him. Eager to explore the craft, she wasn’t sure where to begin, and that experience inspired her to help others find their starting point. She is the founder and executive director of Lancaster Workshop + Tool Library, opening later this year.
“Finding mentorship, tools, space, etc., was a serious lifelong limitation until I shared this story with my friend, mentor and now co-founder, Gene Shaw, a retired cabinetmaker and artist in the city of Lancaster who invited me to learn with him,” she recalled. “By lesson three, I told Gene we must start a community workshop to give our community an opportunity to learn skilled trades in a mentorship, cohort environment, from seasoned experts.”
She connected with SCORE, wrote a business plan, created a budget and pitched her idea to the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The Trust agreed to serve as fiscal sponsor, supporting the workshop and tool library under the Trust’s 501(c)(3) status.
“It’s really thanks to them and their belief in our mission along with the Steinman STEM Alliance for giving us the gift of startup funding to get off the ground,” Fritz said.

flags, and I think that’s true of the Scouting America flag,” said Logan Ginder, the marketing and membership coordinator of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. “It represents Scouting and the state of Pennsylvania. I think it’s important just because we are Scouting America, and we’re one of the largest youth programs across the country. Scouting America has been present for a long time, and the mission hasn’t changed: for youths to become leaders and members of communities and for instilling ethics
into our youths.”
By all accounts, Scouting America’s recent Flags Across the Commonwealth event celebrating this year’s 250th anniversary of the United States of America’s independence was a success. The local Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America, which serves youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, participated in the celebration during a 45-minute ceremony at the Lancaster County Courthouse, 50 N. Duke St., Lancaster, on Feb. 17.
of Scouting units Pack 93 of Lititz, Troop and Pack 76 from Quarryville and Troop 56 of Strasburg.
“It was definitely a special event for the 250th anniversary of our country,” said Ginder, a resident of Elizabethtown. “It’s not something we do every year. What it should mean to the Scouts is a sense of pride in their organization.”
programs to any and all youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Ginder. “We’re preparing youths to make ethical decisions through Scouting values.”
One of 20 in the state, the Pennsylvania Dutch Council was chartered in 1971. Currently, more than 2,000 youths - boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17 - are involved with Scouting America in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

“It was designed to unite the 67 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Ginder, “and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Scouting’s commitment to our community. Community pride was the vibe, and it came at a time when it may be more important than ever to show community pride. There was also a little bit of national pride involved.”
During the ceremony, members of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council raised and lowered the Scouting America flag at the flagpole at the Lancaster County Courthouse. The celebration also included addresses and remarks from local dignitaries and government officials.
About 30 individuals attended the Flags Across the Commonwealth ceremony, including members

As part of the Flags Across the Commonwealth program, the Scouting America flag’s journey began in Philadelphia on Feb. 8, the birthday of Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. After it was received in Lancaster and signed by participants at the local ceremony, the Scouting America flag was passed on to Pennsylvania Dutch Council members in Lebanon, who conducted a similar local service at the Lebanon County Courthouse on Feb. 18.
“What we’re hoping for with the whole event across the state is to celebrate our enduring ideals of freedom and civic pride,” said Ginder. “We’re reaffirming values that continue to strengthen the United States. Hopefully, the takeaway from the Scouts is that it’s important for them to be a part of their communities. It’s a celebration throughout the state, so we hope they felt like they were part of something larger.”
In 1776, the United States was established when 13 original colonies broke from British rule. In 1910, Boy Scouts of America was formed in Washington, D.C.
“We provide Scouting
“They’re members of our community,” said Ginder. “They’re youths we strive to serve through our programs. They’re our Scouting family.”
“Scouting is alive and active in our communities,” he added. “Some people don’t realize we’re still out there. We haven’t fallen by the wayside. We’re still a very prominent program.”
The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 245 Bloomfield Drive, Suite 212-218, Lititz, is funded through the generosity of donors, partners and business sponsors. The local council employs 11 workers, some of whom are part time, and benefits from contributions from 1,200 volunteers, many of whom work directly with Scouts.
“(Scouting is) constantly growing and changing,” said Ginder. “They’re adding more programs and more merit badges. Our facilities are being updated on a regular basis. They’re more effective programs for our youths. Our end goal is to provide quality programs to the youths in our council.”

After graduating from Lampeter-Strasburg High School, Holsinger attended Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), the original training ground for NASA. He participated for seven semesters on the affiliated Larson Motorsports jet dragster racing team, where he crewed races in several states. He also had access to Siemens NX, a piece of industry software for modeling fluid dynamics. Becoming proficient in this software at FIT would unlock yet another opportunity.
In 2024, shortly after graduating from FIT with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, Holsinger began his dream job. He now works on the SpaceX Starship launch pad under construction at Cape Canaveral, Fla. Holsinger spends his days in the flame bucket that lies beneath the launch tower. The organizers’ vision is to provide a place that’s half workshop space for hands-on learning, half lending library for tools.
They also want to bring DIY projects and skilled trades to women and other underrepresented groups and hope the Lancaster Workshop + Tool Library will create an intergenerational, intersectional space that reflects and uplifts the diversity of Lancaster.
Fritz noted that the organization owes everything to Shaw’s support. Well known in the woodworking, art, historic preservation and architecture industries, he has been instrumental in finding materials and tool donations, as well as recruiting instructors.
“I did the behind-thescenes business stuff, but none of this would be possible without him, his
expertise, his connections, his time and willingness to take me on as a mentor and go on this wild ride,” Fritz explained.
The organization is in the process of promoting and recruiting Founding Members for a soft opening in March, and a grand opening is scheduled for the workshop and library at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. The space will initially be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community hours will also be available in the future.
During a recent tour of the space, tool library coordinator Aidan Fife explained how the site will operate.
“On one side, we’ll have a workshop space, where we will offer classes and open workshop hours, so if

people have a project they’d like to work on, they can do that here,” he said. “They can use our bigger tools, like our table saw, miter saw and band saw.”
The organization will require safety classes to prepare people to use the bigger tools.
The library side of the building houses a wide variety of tools that members can check out, much like they’d do with books in a traditional library. Shelves are packed with hundreds of items, including circular saws, screwdrivers, drills, sanders, air compressors and more. People can borrow gardening tools, such as rakes, shovels or a wheelbarrow.

“The general premise of the tool library is we want it to be accessible to people who want to fix something at home, but maybe they don’t have the money or want to buy a tool they’ll use once,” Fife said. “Or they don’t have the space to store the tool if they did
To prepare for opening the tool library, Shaw, Fritz, Fife and their team visited similar sites in the region, including the West Philly Tool Library and the Station North Tool Library
They were inspired by the size and scope of both places, and they envision Lancaster’s library-ofthings expanding over time.
They hope to continue to build the inventory through donations of items, and they plan to offer classes for people to learn new skills. Current classes include programs on stained glass, a seed exchange and a masonry

class.
“The sky’s the limit on what we could offer here,” Fife said. “It’s really just finding the teachers who
