At the age of 3, Willow Street native Maya Pieters, 20, was diagnosed with a rare neurological syndrome known as congenital bilateral perisylvian disorder. On average, Maya has eight seizures every day … but not when she’s with horses.

n 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children.

GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing

support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing.

“I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth.

Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.”

Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing.

The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.”

services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing.

“Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.”

In addition to volunteering at Green Meadow Farm, Maya blogs for Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm. Building Bridges Foundation provides veterans, their families, and individuals experiencing trauma, loss, or cognitive or emotional challenges a safe space for personal growth through equineassisted activities.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9.

This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) juniors Hollyn Miller, Cassie Meck, and Maya Bowman were selected by audition for the 2021 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Chorus.

PMEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of over 4,000 members dedicated to promoting the musical development of all Pennsylvanians.

Miller, Meck, and Bowman joined high school vocalists from around the commonwealth for a virtual choral festival featuring Messiah University’s Rachel Cornacchio as guest conductor. The 2021 PMEA Virtual All-State Festival took place

online from April 14 to 17. The chorus performed a selection from “Proud Music of the Storm,” a piece inspired by the Walt Whitman poem of the same name.

Erik Welchans said that for the 19 years he has been LSHS choral director, three is largest group of LSHS students who have been accepted to the PMEA All-State Choir in one year. In addition, because they are all juniors, they qualify for the National Choir, which is held every other year.

“Music has been pretty much my whole life,” said Bowman. “My dad has always been into music. He’s the one who got me into it.” She explained that at their home, she

East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic.

Elected officials across the commonwealth have joined together to

promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes.

On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense of themselves and their families to serve the general public. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus.

“The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.”

Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction. “Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of

Lancaster EMS Slates Course The Education Department of Lancaster EMS announced its “Learn While You Earn” program.

The program will be the first fulltime academy for eligible candidates to earn a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS-approved EMT Basic Certification. This program is a collaborative effort between Lancaster EMS and PA CareerLink.

Eligible candidates will be hired as a full-time Lancaster EMS employee and compensated at a training hourly wage while in attendance at the Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS’ EMT- Basic Certification course, which requires a minimum of 40 hours per week.

Upon successful completion of the program and after obtaining a Pennsylvania Bureau of EMS certification, the employee will be promoted to EMT-B with the commensurate pay rate increase and associated benefits.

Candidates will also agree to an 18-month employment commitment to Lancaster EMS after certi-

fication. EMT candidates will be recruited from the general population with emphasis on high school graduating seniors.

Classes will begin in September at the Lancaster EMS Millersville Station, 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. The first academy class is expected to be completed by midDecember, with candidates working effective Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022.

The application and employment process will consist of a phone interview, program entrance assessments as well as a personal interview by a formal panel of current Lancaster EMS employees. Following completion of all pre-acceptance processes, the individual will either be offered a position or placed on a potential candidate waitlist.

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has announced its latest exhibit, “The Lancaster County Art Quilt Project.” The exhibit will be on display from Saturday, May 1, to Thursday, June 3. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. where attendees can meet many of the artists exhibiting their works. Judged awards will be announced at that time. The reception is free and open to the public.

For this exhibit, participants were asked to create artwork representing their favorite subjects and locations in Lancaster County. Discovering The Healing Arts At PCA&D School Plans Open House

Arch Street Center will hold its annual Fishbowl Fundraiser virtually on Sunday, May 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. via YouTube and Facebook. The livestreamed event will include musical entertainment, giveaway drawings and a program. Two hundred items will be given away in the drawings.

Additionally, takeout meals will be available for participants to enjoy at their home or venue during the event.

The meal will include macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, a garden salad and a dessert. Supporters may order packages for up to two, four, or eight people. Applewood smoked pork barbecue and rolls, as well as peanut butter pies, may be purchased separately. Meals may be picked up on Saturday, May 15, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Arch Street Center, 629 N. Market St., Lancaster.

Resurrection Catholic School, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host an open house on Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Included during the event will be tours of the building, various student art projects, class work from students of all grades, refreshments and gift card giveaway drawings. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing and mask wearing are required.

Parents seeking a private school for their children are invited to attend with their child, and current families are encouraged to refer friends who may be interested in Resurrection. Attendees are asked to use the side door on the right

side of the building.

Age 4 kindergarten and kindergarten at Resurrection are designed to engage children in fun and creative lessons that create a balance so children learn, socially interact and get what they need to prepare them for success in future grades. Uppergrade classes are intended to challenge students academically and to educate them in Catholic traditions and teachings.

PCA&D made it a mission to ensure that everyone would have access to the program. On Friday, June 4, there will be an outdoor exhibition displaying the work of students involved with the Healing Arts program. “In many ways, the exhibition will pay tribute to a wide perspective of diverse individuals so that anyone living and working in Lancaster County can connect to this program,” explained Snovel.

Lampeter United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Village and Book Roads in Lampeter, has revamped its food cupboard. Now called Blessings Pantry Food Bank, the pantry will provide food assistance in the community to give individuals and families supplemental food and supplies in a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment.

The pantry’s mission is to help eliminate hunger in the community by providing everyone access to sufficient nutritious food. Blessings Pantry is looking to partner with area agencies, schools and churches to help reach people in need, and other food banks have been contacted to help provide foods that may be in limited supply or to supply fresh produce or frozen items. Blessings Pantry is looking into various ways of distributing food.

Beginning on Saturday, May 1, individuals may visit Blessings Pantry on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Four years ago, Richard Price; his sons, Jacob and Jordan; and their families established the Cynthia E. Price Scholarship for the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). The scholarship was created to honor Richard’s late wife, artist and craftswoman Cynthia, and to financially assist students determined to improve the world around them through their artwork. The Cynthia E. Price Scholarship served as a catalyst for PCA&D to figure out how a program in the healing arts could bring the community together.

The president of PCA&D, Michael Molla, created a new strategic plan concentrating on external relationships that would enable PCA&D to work in conjunction with organizations and institutions around Lancaster County. PCA&D applied for and was awarded a Passion Grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation. “This grant gave us the ability to host an artist in residence and form an advisory committee beyond PCA&D to oversee the Healing Arts program,” explained Todd Snovel, special assistant to the president and director of strategic initiatives and development at PCA&D. The college did not have to look far for an artist to fill the residency.

PCA&D was preparing to distribute a press release when Jennifer Quigley

made a cold call to the college. “We scheduled an interview with her to hear about her background, vision, and passion for the healing arts, and from that, it was clear we found our artist in residence,” said Snovel.

Quigley’s expertise is not simply art therapy, but expressive arts therapy.

It’s a process that incorporates numerous creative approaches such as music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, play therapy, and more, which are blended to fit the needs of the client.

The Healing Arts program launched in January at PCA&D. “We’ve received a great response from the Advisory Committee,” noted Deborah Barber, director of the institute for leadership, creative entrepreneurship, and innovation at PCA&D. “We have a diverse Advisory Committee with members from the local, state, and national arts, education, and health care communities.”

PCA&D’s Healing Arts program offers new pathways and opportunities for students to explore connections between art, community, and medicine. Students now have access to someone working in the field who can mentor them and help build their portfolios. As for the community, the Healing Arts program is another way for PCA&D to get involved with a variety of organizations in Lancaster County.

Final judging will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11, and the contestants’ videos will be posted on the competition’s Facebook page, which may be found by searching for “Grand Prix Kyiv.” Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 12, followed by a special ballet performance.

In 2006, Laura Howell turned her dream of teaching Shakespeare full time into a reality. Prior to this, Howell was working as a theater teacher at Lancaster County Day School, where she taught Shakespeare to high school students. It was at this time that she noticed how excited students were about Shakespeare and how the language and the plays themselves empowered the students.

Luckily, Howell was in a position where she could open a theater dedicated to Shakespeare, so she founded The People’s Shakespeare Project.

The theater group started as a college performance company and performed during the summer at Elizabethtown College. After a couple years went by, the group moved to Millersville University and staged plays outside during the summer.

for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. After the students begged Howell to widen the age group, she gave in and set up two sections: one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers.

Due to the pandemic, The People’s Shakespeare Project was completely virtual last year. “We kept the theater going,” explained Howell. “We had a small group of high school students, and Zoom worked well, so we’re doing it again.”

The People’s Shakespere Project will offer one session of Camp Will to rising eighth- through 12thgraders from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30. Given the likelihood that many students are tired of Zoom, Howell and her co-workers are redesigning Camp Will in ways that they think will make the camp more palatable online. Students will record an abridged version of “Twelfth Night” within three weeks, and it will stream on YouTube with every actor tuning in via Zoom on July 30 at 7:30 p.m. The People’s Shakespeare Project has executed three virtual plays, all of which can be seen on its YouTube channel. Streaming is free to viewers, but donations are welcome.

There are some silver linings to Camp Will being vir-

tual. Thanks to Zoom, different guest artists from all over the world will teach every day. “We have people tuning in from New Orleans, Massachusetts, and even Turkey!” exclaimed Howell.

“Kids will have incredible educational and performative opportunities.”

Howell believes that a lot of students, especially highschoolers, have learned to be afraid of Shakespeare. “I feel that if they put themselves out there and experience Shakespeare the way it’s supposed to be - by living, breathing, speaking, and acting it kids will latch onto Shakespeare and love it because

Hurst Receives Scholarship

Ascension Academy has awarded its first Instrumental Scholarship to clarinetist Andre Hurst. The academy will provide Andre with a four-year scholarship to study with Janine Thomas, principal clarinetist of the Lancaster and Harrisburg symphony orchestras.

Andre is a ninth-grader at Hempfield High School. In addition to playing in his school ensembles, he was selected for District Band in eighth and ninth grades. He is the first chair clarinetist in the youth chamber orchestra Allegretto, which will perform Beethoven’s 7th Symphony this spring. Andre is frequently invited to play with the Franklin & Marshall College band. He has been studying with Thomas for four years and has played advanced repertoire such as the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Weber Concertino, and Saint-Saëns Sonata. Andre has also played the piano for nine years. He enjoys archery and is a member of his school’s tennis team.

Community members may hear Andre play music on Sunday, May 16, at 9:30 a.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church’s Music Ministry Sunday, a celebration of music featuring students of the Ascension Academy. The church is located at 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Masks are required during the service.

The mission of Ascension Academy is to provide educational programs in the visual and musical arts to students of all ages and levels. Currently, the school offers flute, clarinet, and saxophone lessons provided by Thomas and keyboard and guitar lessons given by the church’s music director, John Zielinski.

Pioneer Track Teams Handle Visiting Solanco

With a handful of personal records and some sweeping performances, the Pioneer track teams defeated visiting Solanco last Monday. Depth was key for the boys who swept the mile, 400 and 800 meter runs in a 101.5 48-5 victory and kept their record unblemished at 4-0.

Teagan Weaver, under 11.0 for the first time this year, won the 100 (10.93), 200, long and triple jumps while Colin Whitaker led the mile sweep, with Nate Eberly and Ben Devine, and won the 3200.

Luka Vranich, Arik Harnish and Marty Brenneman secured the 400 while Harnish, Vranich and Cooper Honert took care of the 800. Harnish

and Vranich also joined Brenneman and Aidan Black to win the 4x400 relay while Whitker, Black, Riley Wissler and Ben Devine handled the 4x800.

Christian Otto chipped in with a winning PR in the 300 hurdles.

In the field, Elijah Carr won the discus and was second in the javelin and shot put. Zach Shelly won the shot and Luke Wiley and Aidan Wiley went 1-2 in the pole vault.

The girls showed their depth in the relays and moved to 2-2 with a 92-58 victory. Tori Heiserman, Aubrey Magagna, Tonna Harnish and Jaclyn Martin opened with a 4x800 win and Heiserman and Harnish joined forces with Jesse Salgado and Madison Malcom to win the 4x400.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE Despite a crushing 22-3 performance over Penn Manor Friday, April 16, the girls’ lacrosse team found itself in a tie with the Comets as both teams settled in with 5-4 records overall.

As for the game itself, L-S scored its first goal in the first 30 seconds and poured in ten more in the opening half for an 11-zip lead at the break.

L-S continued to dominate play,

outscoring the hosts 11-3 and earning their fourth section win of the season.

Jeslyn Krebs and Rowan Kimmel both racked up five goals each. Kimmel also assisted five times and Krebs twice. Hannah Gawne (4g, 1a), Riley Dawson (3g), Kelliann Drummond (2g, 3a), Kelly Hostetter (2g, 1a) and Malaina Bauson (1g) rounded out the scoring.

“While we feel good heading into the second half of the season, and we have shown tremendous resiliency coming off some hardfought losses, we are not satisfied with our overall performance,” said head coach Marshall Krebs.

“Penn Manor was an important game. They were ahead of us in the standings,” Krebs continued. “We came out fast and strong and I was able to rotate girls in early.”

In non-league play last Monday, the Pioneers poured in a seasonhigh 24 goals and gave up just two in a lopsided win over Red Lion. It was the fourth time in five games that L-S has scored 20 or more goals.

Kimmel dominated the scoring with seven goals.

“Camp is open!” exclaimed Peter Fiorello, executive director of Black Rock Retreat (BRR).

Located on 100 acres of woodland in southern Lancaster County, BRR is a nonprofit Christian camp that has been running since 1954. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, BRR was forced to cancel the first three weeks of camp.

“Once we reopened, we served roughly 600 kids with no cases (of COVID), which was a miracle,” said Fiorello. “Parents were begging us to stay open.”

Camp will be open for eight weeks this summer beginning Sunday, June 13. Overnight camp will be available for students in grades two through 12, and day camp will be open to children in grades one through six. BRR offers financial assistance and awards scholarships every year so that underprivileged children can go to camp. Registration opened in December 2020.

For the first time ever, BRR has partnered with the semiprofessional Christian soccer team the Charlotte Eagles. BRR will host a soccer day camp this summer for children in grades one through eight from Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30.

“The Charlotte Eagles do ministry work in the States and overseas, so we’re really fortunate that some of the trainers will come here to work with the kids,” said Fiorello.

Fiorello has served as executive director of BRR for almost four years. Some of his main goals

include casting vision for the future, fundraising, and creating new ministry opportunities.
