Red Raven recognizes Lampeter-Strasburg student artists

RedRaven Art Gallery, 138 N. Prince St., Lancaster, has announced the recipients of its scholarships, which it awards to student artists each year. Aubrey Magagna and Lucy Smucker, who are both seniors at LampeterStrasburg High School, each received a scholarship. Magagna and Smucker will be individually featured in an exhibit at the gallery this summer.
Magagna was awarded the Red Raven Art Company Scholarship, which the gallery created when it first opened its doors 16 years ago. To be considered for the scholarship, Magagna submitted a slide presentation of her artist statement alongside still-life works and a portfolio of 10 art pieces, which she selected with the help of her art teachers. She began creating art at a young age, and although she primarily works with fine pens, watercolor paints and colored pencils, Magagna said that she likes to experiment with a variety of mediums to carry out her vision for each piece. “I admire how subjective art can be. When showing viewers my
pieces, I want the work to be as interpretive as possible,” Magagna said.

“Whether it is a feeling, a memory or a materialistic form, I want my pieces to inspire introspection or contemplation in the viewer.” Magagna plans to attend Kutztown University to study art education after high school.

Smucker was awarded the Mitch Lyons Clay Scholarship, which was created in memory of the late Mitch Lyons in 2018. To be considered for the scholarship, Smucker submitted an artist statement and a portfolio of her work, which she said that she curated with the assistance of her art teachers. Smucker has been drawing and painting since she was young but decided to further develop her artistic skills and she has accepted commission work in high school. “I want my art to feel whimsical and lively. I love including houses in my work, and I have been really digging into themes of home and belonging,” Smucker said. “I hope those themes come through and resonate with people.”
Smucker added that her favorite mediums are currently clay, watercolor and gouache. She plans to attend Messiah University after high school to major in studio art.

Great Beginnings will expand programs

First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, recently announced that it will make changes to its preschool program, Great Beginnings. By adjusting certain aspects of its programs, the church hopes to make classes more accessible for students and instructors.
Great Beginnings offers programs that are divided into three levels: one for 2-year-olds, one for 3-yearolds and one for prekindergarten students. Previously, most of the

classes met once a week. For its classes for 2-year-olds, Great Beginnings will offer a class on Mondays and Wednesdays and a class on Tuesdays and Thursdays in addition to the weekly class on Fridays. “We realized that the 2 year olds do much better when they attend classes more than one day a week,” said Heather Reynolds, a prekindergarten teacher and administrative director at Great Beginnings.
Reynolds first started teaching at Great Beginnings in 2016 as an instructor in the program for 3-year-olds. She noticed that due to See Preschool pg 6
The term artificial intelligence (AI) draws mixed reactions. Thanks to decades of science fiction films, television shows and books, many people hear the term AI and immediately begin to picture a bleak dystopia where robots have taken over the world, accompanied by the worry that Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t be able to save the day. Charlie Reisinger, chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, shared his perspective on the technological phenomenon to clear up some common misconceptions about AI.

“AI is just another chapter in humanity’s quest to create machines that mirror other humans,” Reisinger said. “There are age-old stories of human beings trying to create life, like the tales of Frankenstein’s monster and the Greek myth of Pygmalion. At its core, it’s trying to breathe some sort of life into technology, but AI is really just math and computer code, nothing more.”

The research of AI has been occurring for decades. The fundamental idea was to create software that could emulate human decision making, but many research efforts were not fruitful enough and were

Every year, Red Raven Art Gallery exhibits the artwork of its scholarship recipients on the gallery’s emerging artist wall. Magagna’s work will be featured in July and Smucker’s work will be featured in August. “It’s important for young people to be creative and enjoy the process of making,” said Lee Lovett, manager of Red Raven Art Gallery. “It’s equally important to us to allow young people to realize that you can make a living off of art.” For each student featured on the emerging artist wall, Red Raven waives the commission that it would normally deduct from art sales. “To say I’m excited is an

Railroad art and photography are the subjects of two soon-to-be-published books, now available for preorder in the Whistle Stop Shop museum store at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. The authors, J. Craig Thorpe and Tony Reevy, will also be at the museum for presentations and book signings.
“Railroads, Art, and American Life: An Artist’s Memoir” by Thorpe explores the past, present, and future of rail travel through his works of art. His personal story and paintings depict not only the golden age of train travel but also the role that railroads play in society today and looking forward. This 260-page, hardback volume features 130 color illustrations.

Thorpe will give a presentation and sign copies of his book at the museum on Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. The presentation is free of charge, but advance registration at www.eventbrite.com is required, whether attending in person or via Zoom. Registration is for the presentation only, and the ticket does not include museum admission.
Regular museum admission rates apply and may be paid at the admissions desk on the day of the visit.

“The Railroad Photography of Phil Hastings” by Reevy explores the life and work of Dr. Philip R. Hastings. Lancaster Public Library prepares for move
After years of planning and construction, Lancaster Public Library is entering the final stage of its building project. On Thursday, April 20, the library will officially begin its move to its new location in Ewell Plaza. The library is expected to be closed for four to six weeks as its collections and equipment are moved into and installed in the new facility.
The brand-new, state-of-the-art building at 151 N. Queen St. will place Lancaster Public Library in the center of its community. The library will be fully ADA accessible and has been designed to be welcoming, open, and bright. It will be equipped with 21st-century technology and collections with the goal of bringing a new level of resources to the community. The library’s presence in Ewell Plaza will include spaces for outdoor reading and community programs. An elevated outdoor terrace overlooking the plaza will provide a signature space for library events.
The current building, located at 125 N. Duke St., is set to serve its last patrons on April 19; the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. During the move, the library will be closed to the public.
This closure will remain in effect until the new building opens in late spring. Library materials borrowed after April 5 will not be due while the library is closed. Due dates will be extended to Monday, June 12. During the closure period, access to e-books, e-audiobooks, movies, and other electronic resources will remain available. For more information, visit www.LancasterPublic Library.org/on-the-move.
On Saturday, April 22, between 10 a.m. and noon, Lancaster Public Library will host a Parade of Books stretching approximately two blocks from the Duke Street library to Ewell Plaza. Kids and adults who are young at heart are invited to be a part of the library’s historic move by carrying one book per person to the new building while cheered on by Library Lovers stationed along East Marion Street. The parade’s main goal is not to transport the library’s inventory, which will be a done under the guidance of a company that specializes in moving libraries, but instead to provide a fun, symbolic event to kick off the move. Registration is not necessary, and walk-ins are encouraged. For full event details, visit www.Lancaster PublicLibrary.org/events.

the limited amount of space in the classes, many families in the community were unable to enroll their kids and provide them with a preschool experience. For the upcoming year, the prekindergarten program will double the number of students in both its morning and afternoon classes, increasing the number of students from 12 to 24. “This will allow us to accept a lot more previously enrolled students as well as new students from the community,” Reynolds said. “Now we will have the flexibility to meet all of our families’ needs.”
Another change that will be made at Great Beginnings revolves around classroom assistants. Until now, the program has relied on volunteers, who are primarily parents, to serve as assistants in each class. Classroom assistants will now be paid for their time, and as long as they pass the required background checks, anyone from the community may serve as an assistant.
Great Beginnings also offers a nursery time program
that is open to those inside and outside of First Presbyterian Church. The program serves as an hourly day care for children in prekindergarten and younger. By offering nursery time, Great Beginnings hopes to give parents a chance to run errands or take a break in their hectic schedules.
“We put a lot of emphasis on engaging kids with the community,” Reynolds said. “We try to take trips often, like visiting the local fire department or checking out a plant nursery.” Reynolds added that she has a son in the LampeterStrasburg School District, so she tries to prepare her students for what will be expected of them once they reach kindergarten. Each level of classes at Great Beginnings is more structured than the last; Reynolds’ main goal is to help students grow both academically and socially by the time they leave prekindergarten.

“I’m really proud of the school that we have and the way our teachers can engage the kids and encourage growth,” Reynolds said. “We have such a kid-friendly community at the church, which is part of what drew me to it when I first moved to the area.”

abandoned. Around 10 years ago, a branch of AI exploration called neural network research resurfaced through the efforts of companies like Google. These companies realized this particular technique, roughly modeled after the human brain, could be used for pattern matching. Google made strides with functions like language processing, which gave us Google Translate. Reisinger credits this point in time as the beginning of a new generation of AI.
Now, AI can be found in many applications that we utilize on a daily basis, such as Siri, Google Assistant and GPS. Reisinger said that the increased presence of these complex applications is due to a variety of factors, the decreasing cost of computers with higher processing power and the increase in storage capability being chief among them. “In the ’90s, the capability we have today was thought to be impossible,” Reisinger said. “It’s the confluence of all of these factors that makes AI a hot topic and allows it to make the strides that it has.”
Reisinger said that he sees a mountain of potential in AI. In his eyes, it’s a tool that can be used to enhance human skill and creativity; the main purpose of AI is to process information that it is given and

return a result that is meaningful to the user. Reisinger also noted that it isn’t a tool that is going away any time soon, so he believes people need to embrace it and help society to use AI in a meaningful way.
This opinion doesn’t mean that Reisinger doesn’t have any concerns about AI technology. He notes that the most worrisome effects of using AI are human bias and ways that it will influence teaching and learning. “As humans, we have a terrible time reducing bias in our thinking. Human weaknesses can find their way into the code of these tools, and we need to build them in a way that they don’t mirror the worst parts of humanity,” Reisinger said. As chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, Reisinger also seeks to impress upon students and teachers that just because an AI algorithm provides you with an answer, it’s the user’s responsibility to fact check sources and to be discerning.
“Now is a time more than ever to rely on strong educational systems. It’s a new literacy,” Reisinger said. “The role of the teacher is dramatically more important now to help students navigate this new informational world.”

The Barnstormers will play the Staten Island Ferry Hawks at 11 a.m. at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Seniors age 60 and older who live in Lancaster County can bring their photo identification to a local senior community center on weekdays

If all goes according to plan, the new building will be unveiled to patrons during a series of open houses and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June. As more information becomes available, it will be posted at www.LancasterPublic Library.org.
Lancaster Public Library is one of the oldest public libraries in the country. After more than two and a half centuries, the library continues its efforts to inspire, empower, and strengthen the community by connecting people with information, ideas, and enriching experiences.
After thumping Solanco 14-4, the softball team felt confident against Elizabethtown, knowing the Mares defeated the Bears 11-5 despite two errors and striking out nine times. Makes sense. But that’s not quite how high school softball goes and why we play the games.

In a game that featured 28 combined hits, 15 errors and eight total walks, L-S suffered a 14-13 footballtype score road loss on Monday, April 10. Facing an 11-1 deficit after four complete innings, the Pioneers exploded for 12 runs in the top of the fifth only to give three back in the bottom half.
“The errors were a bit misleading,” said head coach Earl Rutledge. “Some of those balls were hit really hard. We just started with the bats too late in the game. I was proud that we battled back to take the
lead in what was an ugly game on both sides. Our girls never give up and fight to the end.”
The 12-run burst featured six walks, a pair of errors, five singles and Brooke Zuber’s one out grand slam.
The Bears responded with backto-back doubles and a two-run homer to end the scoring as both teams were denied down the stretch.
Paige Baxter led with three hits while Zuber, Julia Gerard, and Mackenzie Macki each added two hits.
In the circle, Maura Savoca took the loss, scattering seven hits over three innings. Baxter pitched one inning with Ally Raub closing out with one strikeout, one walk and no hits over the final two frames.
L-S made short work of Lebanon on Wednesday, using 15 hits to blank the Cedars 19-0 in three innings. The visitors scored nine in
the second and nine more in the third to post the lopsided win.
Gerard, Raub (3 RBI), Baxter (3 RBI), Mack (4 RBI), Chloe Meck and Gabby Hiles each collected two hits on the day with Hiles clubbing a solo homer to start the second inning.
BASEBALL
The baseball team took advantage of seven errors and nine walks and defeated Donegal 8-2 on Thursday April 6. They extended a slim 2-1 lead with six runs in the third inning. Six walks, two errors, a wild pitch and a hit batter resulted in the scoring.
Both teams finished with three hits with Will Bailey, Jason Long and Anthony Turek, with a double, sparking the Pioneers.
Turek also picked up the win on the hill, striking out three, walking three and surrendering just three hits.
“The guys are working hard,” said head coach Jeff Swarr. “So far, Jason Long, Anthony Turek and Peyton Harsh have all pitched well as starters and we have had strong performances from Hayden Brinkman and Mason Coe out of the bullpen. We pitch pretty well and play good defense, so we will be in every game.”

Four days later, L-S dropped a 2-0 result against visiting Elizabethtown. The Bears took advantage of three walks and two singles to push two across in the second inning.
“Their pitcher did a nice job against us,” said Swarr. “We had two hits, one by Luke Brenneman and one by Cayden See. They scored those runs on walks. Other than that, we played a clean game and just could not muster any runs.”
Harsh, with four strikeouts and six walks, took the loss. Brinkman struck out six in relief.
In Wednesday’s home game with Lebanon, the Pioneers used a threerun sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and dealt the Cedars a 4-1 loss.
Groff finished with two hits on the day while Long, who pitched two-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks, and White both cracked doubles.
TENNIS

The tennis team collected their second straight 4-1 result against a Section One school on Tuesday, April 11, against Penn Manor.
Kyle Pawson and Owen Lapp picked up a solid 6-0, 6-1 No. 1 doubles win with Justin Gouger and Kenny Finn winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
In singles play it was Cole Teaman with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Spencer Teaman taking No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 result.
A 6-1 win over Elizabethtown on Wednesday, April 12, moved the Pioneers to 7-2 overall.
Fitzgerald and Pawson, at No. 1 doubles, and Gouger and Finn, playing No. 3, both earned 8-5 wins while the Teaman’s blanked their opponent at No. 2.
The Teamans’ and Pawson all earned straight set singles wins, playing No. 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
LACROSSE

The boys’ lacrosse team did what they needed to do last Tuesday, April 11 and picked up a 15-2 win over a winless Elizabethtown squad.
The Pioneers, with a five goal, one assist effort from Zach Labrecque, raced out to an 8-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. The balanced attack featured nine different goal scorers. Chase Barber followed Labrecque with two goals and one assist while Colin Sullivan (1a), Gavin Denlinger, Owen Krause, Connor Hudson, Anthony Carson, Drexton Frank, and Brady Cunningham all found the back of the net once.
Bryce Thomas (3 saves), Hunter Palmateer (3 saves) and Cole Beiler (1 save) patrolled the goal.
The girls’ lacrosse team took care of third place Elizabethtown and remained perfect on the season with a 17-5 final on April 11.
Five different players scored multiple goals as the Pioneers took control with a 12-1 run through the first half. Leigha Saurbaugh, Rowan Kimmell (3a), and Bethany Stoltzfus (2a) all scored hat tricks with Hannah Cissne and Ryann Logan (2a) both scoring twice. Abigail Welchans, Trinity Wise, Abigail Wolff, and Sophia Labrecque each scored once and dished one assist.
Zoe Dilling (4) and freshman Jillian Kelly (1) protected the goal with five total saves.
TRACK
Ephrata, one of the top teams in Section Two, handed the Pioneers a pair of losses last Tuesday in Lampeter. Despite three individual wins (long, triple, and high jump) by Elly Bruner the Lady Mountaineers went home with an 85-65 win while the boys’ team, with just five wins on the day, fell 90-60.
Bruner also ran a leg of the winning 4x100 relay with Maya Brenneman, Madison Weichler and Lyndi Wall, who also claimed the 100 (12.4) and 200 (26.2) meter sprints, to lead the scoring.
Adding to Bruner’s field points was Maggie Swarr with firsts in the discus (96-11) and javelin (123-1) as well as a second in the shot.
Despite being outpointed in the field, 35-28, the pole vaulters swept with Aidan Wiley (12-6), Greyson Myers (11-7) and Carter Weaver (9-6) doing the damage.
“Carter placed in three events for the day, adding thirds in both hurdle events as well,” noted head coach Cal Esh.
Other winners included Braden Bauer (discus, 108-8), Ben Devine (3200, 11:05), Parker Stoner (800, 2:01.1) and Colin Whitaker (mile, 4:45.9).
Albright LIFE’s spring fair will accentuate crafts

Not unlike art, crafts imitate life. But perhaps the most endearing thing about crafts is that they can be both functional and decorative.
All the subtle nuances of the concepts of craft will be on display on Saturday, April 29, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when Albright LIFE Lancaster, 417 W. Frederick St., Lancaster, hosts its inaugural Spring Craft Fair indoors. The free fair will feature food, fun, and, of course, a wide variety of crafts.

Organizers of the event are hoping that the way the Spring Craft Fair is presented will create a festive and community-based atmosphere.

“We were looking at ways to have a fundraiser,” said Annette Kroeck, Albright LIFE’s community outreach coordinator. “We thought starting small would be a great way to go, and we thought a craft fair would be a good idea, especially with how crafty Lancaster County is.”
Expected to be on hand are a total of 16 crafters and vendors, who will be showing off their wares. There will be quilts, folded art, clay art, screen-printed T-shirts, jewelry, designer cookies, artistic candles and much more. The event will also include giveaway drawings.

“By holding it indoors, we can show off the building and what we have to offer,” said

There will be plenty to see and do at Albright LIFE Lancaster’s Spring Craft Fair.

Kroeck. “The more people who see the inside of the building, the better. We want to get the word out about Albright LIFE (Lancaster). It’s also a way for our participants who are crafty to show off their work.”

The Spring Craft Fair is the first community activity that Albright LIFE (Lancaster) has hosted in more than five years. Events were not held largely due to the pandemic Kroeck said, and providing public re-access to the facility has been “a slow process.”

But she also said that if the inaugural Spring Craft Fair is a success, Albright LIFE Lancaster would consider staging a similar event in the future.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Asbury Foundation, the parent company of Albright LIFE Lancaster. Kroeck said she has modest

New home built on Sunnyside Peninsula
Gate Beautiful Construction recently announced that a home that the company purchased on the Sunnyside Peninsula is near completion.
A century ago, Sunnyside Peninsula, located in the southeast corner of Lancaster city, was a summer retreat, home to a trolly stop and a part of Rocky Springs Park. From a
bowling alley to a dance hall, bathing areas on the river and a steamboat that went up and down the river, the area attracted vacationers looking to relax during the summer months, according to www.rockyspringsbnb.com.
The structures on the peninsula deteriorated, and although there have

been plans over the years to develop the peninsula for residential use, almost every effort has fallen through.

Gate Beautiful purchased a derelict home on the peninsula in February 2022 with the hopes of fixing it up and reselling it. The home’s back door faced the old trolley stop, and concrete stairs ran down the hill
behind the home. Upon closer inspection of the home, Gate Beautiful determined that almost the entire structure would need to be demolished. After nearly a year of demolition and construction, the home is almost complete.
