Grace Community Church (GCC), 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will host its annual youth group benefit auction on Friday, April 26, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. A classic barbecue dinner with a variety of sides will be available from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Guests may pay a flat fee to fill a plate with all it can hold. Smaller plates will be available for a reduced fee.

The event will offset the cost of the youth group’s trip to attend the Momentum Youth Conference that will be held at Indiana Wesleyan University in July.

Student and community ministries pastor Addison Roberts said that the aim for the auction is $20,000 in order to reduce the financial burden on families that are sending students to Momentum. The goal for Momentum is to help students develop and deepen a passion and faith in God and to equip them for evangelism.

The conference will have a long-term impact, Roberts asserted.

An auction on April 26 will help to offset the cost of Grace Community Church youth group members’ attendance at Momentum Youth Conference this summer.

“I truly believe that a growing Christian is someone who is, among other things, deeply concerned for the world around him or her,” Roberts said. “This means proactively seeking justice and, if you will forgive the cliché, being a good neighbor. Supporting a child who is attending Momentum is an

i n v e s t ment in the long-term health of our communities and those communities where our students will represent Lancaster County in the future. By investing in a student’s faith, you are investing in their future and the future of the community they will inhabit.”

For more than two decades, the “Messiah� Sing-Along has been held in Lancaster County. It has always been and remains a drop-in event. “The people can come as they are,� said Clair Leaman, who had conducted a “Messiah� Sing-Along in Chester County for more than a decade before organizing the Lancaster version. “Just stop in. There are no rehearsals.�

Sing-Along will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided.

Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m.

According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them by voice part. Audiences of as many as 600 have attended past events.

The full “Messiah� by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on suffering and death, while the third part concludes with triumph over sin and death.

The Christmas program, which includes part one, is performed in Chester County in December.

At Easter, the program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. Perhaps the most wellknown segment of “Messiah� is the “Hallelujah� chorus in part two, where the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists.

Leaman noted that sign language interpretation of the presentation will be provided by Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie. “Originally, it was just Carol (interpreting),� recalled Leaman. “But then Grace became interested (in interpreting), and she studied with Carol.� Leaman added that sometimes the women interpret simultaneously and at other times they take turns. Stevens serves as deaf ministry area coordinator for the

soprano Carolyn McLain in addition to Floyd Rawleigh Jr., who will be the “Hallelujah� chorus guest conductor, and Westminister retired organist Pat Bleecker, who will play. Returning soloists will include contralto Heidi Kurtz, tenor Timothy Bench, and bass Mark Moliterno.

McLain has performed locally with Opera Lancaster and the

Lemonade Concerts for Opera Lancaster. She has also taken part in the Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series at Highland Presbyterian Church and the Crown Concert Series at Church of the Apostles. McLain has served as soprano soloist for “Messiah� at Calvary Church, for “The Holy City� with the Franconia-Lancaster Choral Singers, and for the Festival of Carols at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.

She also directs the Westminster Strings. “This will be McLain’s first time singing with us,� noted Leaman.

CASA Plans Breakfast Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County will host a Community Awareness Breakfast on Friday, April 26, at 8 a.m. in the ballroom of the Cork Factory Hotel, 480 New Holland Ave., Suite 3000, Lancaster.

At the free, one-hour breakfast, attendees will learn how CASA is making a difference in

vulnerable children in Lancaster County and how community members can help. The event aims to recruit new volunteers, raise funds, and spread awareness about the work of CASA. A teenager who is a former foster child will share her experience and how a CASA volunteer helped her during her time in foster care.

Following the success of the first fair in spring 2018, Royal has lined up exhibitors, along with amusements for children, food for purchase, and opportunities to win prizes, for the second free event, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2018, Royal noted that much of the state would be represented in some way at the fair, but this year, she promises even more. “We will have a lot of new exhibitors,� said Royal, noting that most of last year’s exhibitors will be returning. New this year, will be Sesame Place, Elk Country Visitors Center, and the Little League Museum. McKean County, location of the Allegheny National Forest and the famous Kinzua Bridge, a former railroad bridge that is now a tourist attraction, will be represented, along with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Area, which covers five counties in the northern region.

Also represented will be the area of the Eagles Mere, which will include the Eagles Mere Air Museum, Eagles Mere Auto Museum, and the Eagles Mere Inn. Elk Mountain Ski Resort will be represented. Railroad

enthusiasts will find the Colebrookdale Railroad, and for those interested in Pennsylvania’s rich mine history, there will be information about the Pioneer Tunnel Historic Coal Mine in Schuylkill County. Returning this year will be DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash and representatives of Indiana County, home of the Jimmy Stewart Museum. KPETS (Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services) team members will bring their friendly service dogs again, as well.

Prizes will include a weekend package for two at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle. The excursion will include two nights at the inn, meals, and a kayak tour guided by a park naturalist. A visit to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon for four will also be given away. The prize will include two nights in an extended stay suite at the Canyon Motel; a family pack of tickets from Ole Covered Wagon Tours, which includes horse-drawn tours of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon; and a gift basket of Potter-Tioga County products.

The fair puts emphasis on family fun, so children will find plenty to do, including a scavenger hunt with a grand prize of tickets to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash. Entertainment will be provided by WJTL’s Kids Cookie

According to Royal, guests at the fair will have the opportunity to gain a wealth of information from the visitors bureaus that will have booths at the event. “ We will have 15 visitors bureaus. I love what the bureaus will be presenting,� said Royal. “They will talk about all the special things in their areas, and nobody knows their particular destination better than they do.�

Hungry attendees will find at least seven food trucks selling a variety of items, including Auntie Anne’s, Au-Sam’s Trolley Stop, Kunzler Rolling Grill, K’s Kitchen, Mad Dash Artisan Grilled Cheese, Smoothie King, and Waffle Mamas.

When Dan Henry’s brother, Dave, spoke at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) earlier this year, he stressed the importance of setting aside preconceived ideas when aiming to help people from other cultures. “We don’t want to do things our way,� Dan said. “It is better to follow their directions.�

Dan related that Dave, who is a Presbyterian pastor in Jefferson City, Mo., and the leader of annual trips to a sister church in Tamshiyacu, Peru, explained that point by using the example of a painting project in Peru. “The project lead dumped paint thinner into the paint bucket, and then he dumped in more. We asked why, and he said the paint had to be thinned or it would never dry in the high humidity. If it had been up to us, we would have just started painting,� Dan reported Dave as sharing. “Can you imagine kids running around and bumping into walls covered with wet paint?�

Dan and his wife, Boni, began visiting the Presbyterian church in Tamshiyacu in 2006. Sometimes teams of a dozen or more people from MOPC have traveled there, and other times, it has been only Dan and Boni. No matter the size, the group typically joins with Dave’s parishioners and other folks he has recruited.

Dan noted that when he and Boni first started going to the remote jungle village of Tamshiyacu, they were happy to help with construction projects. Age, however, has slowed them down, but that has actually been a blessing that has turned the traditional missions trip model on its head. “The team does pay some people to help (with construction).

In some ways, we help them more by hiring local men to do the work,� Dan said. “We buy materials locally too. By buying in the village, it helps them out.�

On earlier trips, MOPC members collected flip-flops and other items to distribute to people in

need in Tamshiyacu, but they have since opted to purchase those items in the village, benefiting the local economy. Additionally, the teams buy anti-parasite medication in a Peruvian city for distribution to residents in and around Tamshiyacu.

Along with meeting folks’ physical needs, the mission teams have aimed to meet spiritual needs as well. Dave has mentored the church’s pastors, and typically, the groups host Bible schools for children during their visits. “We usually start with about 50 children, but by the end of the week, it’s popular, and we have several hundred. It’s organized chaos, but they love it,� Dan said.

The next trip to Tamshiyacu is set for Friday, July 5, to Saturday, July 13. Dan and Boni will be traveling with a group from Jefferson City. They plan to host a Bible school, do some touchups on the church building, and renovate a house for the parents of the church’s current pastor, Jhony.

To raise funds for the trip, a yard sale will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at MOPC, 1199 Valley Road, which is located 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372. The event will be held rain or shine.

The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next meeting on Saturday, April 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville.

Dr. Robert Frick will present “Three Local Men of Prominence,” focusing on Jacob Eichholtz, Peter T. Watt and James Shand Sr. Trained as a coppersmith, Eichholtz was a successful businessman in Lancaster in the early 19th century. While skilled at his craft, he also possessed a passion for art. Through study and encouragement from established artists, Eichholtz became a wellknown portrait painter, completing more than 800 portraits

during his professional career.

Watt and Shand, both born in Scotland, immigrated to the United States in the second half of the 19th century. Trained as merchants, these men came to Lancaster in 1878 and established a department store that was in business for more than 100 years.

Frick is a graduate of Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, and he has a doctorate in educational administration from Temple University. He is a teacher of school law and provides workshops for Pennsylvania school districts.

Admission will be free and open to the public.

The Red Rose Coin Club will hold its spring coin show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature a diverse offering of U.S. coins from small silver dimes to large $20 gold coins, as well as currency and coins from countries around the world. Tokens, medals, and proof and mint sets

will also be available. More than 40 dealers will be present. Anyone who would like to sell items or get an idea of what their collection may be worth is invited to bring their items along.

Food and beverages will be available on-site from the Paradise Lions Club. Door prizes will be awarded in hourly drawings. Admission to the coin show is free.

Children’s Ministries at Millersville Community Church invites the community to the annual children’s egg hunt to be held on Saturday, April 20, at the church’s Hope Campus, 242 Bender Road, Millersville. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a performance by theatrical juggler Chris Ivey. After the entertainment, children will

be able to search for eggs throughout the lower level of the church building. A snack will be served after the egg hunt, and each child will receive a gift as well.

Barr, who is being nominated for basketball, played basketball at J.P. McCaskey High School form 1976 to 1979. She was the first female basketball player to score 1,000 points at McCaskey.

In 1979, she was an L-L League All-Star, was named First Team All-State, was named to the Pennsylvania Big 15 All-Star Game, was an honorable mention All-American, and was McCaskey’s Athlete of the Year.

The McCaskey team lost in the state final game in 1979 and was a semifinalist in 1978, amassing a 57-6 record over those two seasons. After his professional career, Givler played nine seasons for Smitty’s Cardinals and played slow-pitch softball. He currently plays modified softball.

Beck attended Hempfield High School, where he received seven varsity letters, was selected to the L-L All-League soccer team, and twice qualified for the PIAA State Swimming and Diving Championship as a diver. Beck was a three-year starter on the soccer team at West Chester State College, and he also participated on the varsity swim team.

Beck has been coaching swimming and diving at Hempfield for 38 years, including 17 years as head coach. As head coach, he has amassed a record of 327-712. His boys’ teams have won 11 section championships and one

The Susquehanna Valley Area Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its annual induction ceremony and banquet on Saturday, May 4, at Four Seasons Banquet Facility, 949 Church St., Landisville. During the banquet, the chapter will honor six inductees: Pete Horn, George Kennedy, Doug Givler, Stephen Beck, Barbara Barr, and Barry Stumpf.

Horn is being nominated as a basketball coach. At P.S. Dupont High School and West Nottingham Academy, he played football, basketball, and baseball and earned eight varsity letters. He served as J.P. McCaskey High School’s athletic director from 1972 to 1998 and as the school’s head boys’ basketball coach from 1972 to 1996. Over that time, he compiled a record of 360-111, and his teams won nine Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League Section 1 titles and five L-L League championships. Horn was honored as Coach of the Year in Section 1 six times. Horn served on the School District of Lancaster’s school board from 2002 to 2010, and he returned to coaching by serving as the head boys’ basketball coach at Lancaster Country Day School for four seasons in the early 2000s.

Kennedy, who is being nominated for body building, is a Columbia resident who spent 15 years as a power lifter before becoming a body builder and winning the title of Mr. Lancaster County in 1977 at the age of

NetCo Dance from pg 1 “More than 30 people from all around Lancaster County have been involved as members over the years. They come from various backgrounds. Most everybody has a dance background, but we’ve had people who do martial arts or are competition cheerleaders,” Berlet said. She pointed out that early dance troupes attempted to make everyone look and dance the same, but NetCo was created to be different. “I look very much at the individual, their personality and charisma. I want them to be themselves doing the movement.

Diversity strengthens the community.”

Because of the diversity of participants, NetCo shows use ballet technique as their basis, but with a modern dance twist.

Accompaniment tends to lean toward instrumental, with compositions by Philip Glass, Glenn Kotche, and others. Berlet described NetCo shows as avantgarde, quirky, and somewhat feminist, while having a social justice outlook. For the company’s grand performance on Saturday, April 27, a show called “Moving Past” has been created.

Immigration issues will be highlighted during the show’s six pieces, which Berlet has coordinated with guest choreographer Franklin & Marshall College professor Pamela Veil.

“Our theme runs parallel to what’s happening in the world and newspaper headlines,” Berlet remarked. She noted that during one of the pieces, President John F. Kennedy’s televised address to the nation on civil rights on June 11, 1963, will accompany the dance. “It was right when three black students were going to attend the University of Alabama and needed protection,” Berlet said. She expressed her frustration that race issues are still a part of today’s culture. “We still see a divided nation,” she said.

“But when you strip away … all the adjectives to describe people, we’re pretty much the same underneath.”

Another piece, titled “Tunnel Vision,” will be a truly multimedia production, with the use of music, video, and confetti. The images will highlight the Berlin Wall, Ellis Island, and the #MeToo movement, asking the question, “How far have we

really come?”

“We get fixated on one point and everything else disappears,” Berlet commented. “I think there are lots of other issues that need to be addressed. If we open our eyes and looking into the periphery, we can see other solutions.”

As 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of NetCo’s forming, Berlet said the creation of “Moving Past” was a direct response to the company’s first show, “Moving Toward Yourself.” “That show was more personal,” she stated.

“Now, this show has a broader scope, and I’m moving past myself.”

“Moving Past” will be

performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 27 at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Seating is by reservation only, and tickets may be purchased by visiting www.ArtsMU.com.

Proceeds from the event will be used to produce future shows, and Berlet is already planning auditions for next season. They will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at Evolution Power Yoga, 515 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. captain and hit a game-winning shot to win a Regional in the NAIA tournament. Barr played one year of professional basketball in the English Division One League for Crystal Palace. Barr has since held many roles in broadcast journalism.

Stumpf, who is nominated for boxing, began as a youth boxer in 1958 at the YMCA in Lancaster. He won his first AAU Championship in York at 10 years old.

In 1963, he was named Outstanding Boxer and YMCA Champion at 118 pounds. He was trained as a youth by Milt Finefrock, with whom he began training boxers in 1974-75 and founded Finefrock & Stumpf Golden Gloves Gym and Youth Center. As a boxing coach and

trainer, Stumpf holds the highest certification (Level 4, Star 1) and has been the Pennsylvania State Champions Coach for Golden Gloves from 1982 to the present. He was awarded USA Boxing Coach of the Year four times and has coached for Olympic trials on five different occasions. His boxers hold more than 50 Open Class Golden Glove titles, 15 National Golden Glove titles, and more than 30 National Golden Glove team titles. Stumpf has coached at the Pan American Olympics and at two Olympic Sports Festivals and was inducted into the Golden Gloves National Hall of Fame and the Middle Atlantic Association of USA Boxing’s Hall of Fame.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced its 2019-2020 concert season. Unless otherwise noted, Classic Series concerts will take place at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Music director Stephen Gunzenhauser is celebrating his 40th anniversary with the LSO. The Classic Series will open on Saturday, Sept. 7, with a concert including Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring violinist Elisso Gogibedaschwili; Verdi’s “Nabucco Overture”; and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7.

A Saturday, Oct. 26, concert will feature the LSO together with the Lancaster Symphony Chorus, performing Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living.” The concert will also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

Camp Invention To Offer Local Events Chamber Mentees Provide Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, will visit the local area. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in kindergarten through grade six to find their inner inventor by learning the process of innovation.

Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by world-changing inventors - the NIHF inductees. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning; build confi-

dence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, and problemsolving skills; and encourage entrepreneurship in a fun and engaging environment.

Camp Invention will be held at three area locations. South Eastern Intermediate School, Fawn Grove, will host a camp from Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13. A second session will be held at Cornwall Elementary School from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12.

Finally, a camp will be offered at Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19.

This year’s Supercharged curriculum features several video

challenges from inductees that encourage children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness. Hands-on activities include Innovation Force, Deep Sea Mystery, Farm Tech, and DIY Orbot. Activities will range from digging up fossils and inventing island survival tools to learning how to manage a farm and reverse engineering a remote-controlled robot. At the end of the program, each camper will bring home a robot.

ASSETS Posts Staffing Decision After 18 months serving as interim co-executive directors at ASSETS, a local nonprofit focused on transforming the community through ethical business, Tina Campbell and Jonathan Coleman accepted the offer to move into a permanent co-executive directorship, effective Jan. 1. The decision came after a period of discussions with Jess King, a former ASSETS executive director of seven years and

a recent congressional candidate.

When King left ASSETS in the fall of 2017 to run for Congress, the board appointed Campbell and Coleman as the interim coexecutive directors. Both already served on staff in full-time capacities - Campbell as the director of development and Coleman as the director of programs.

At the beginning of this year, the ASSETS board extended permanent leadership roles to

Campbell and Coleman. As coexecutive directors, Campbell leads administration and all fundraising efforts, while Coleman serves as the external face of the organization and oversees the programmatic side of ASSETS. King remains involved with ASSETS as a consultant and supporter.

Library Assistance Eight Donegal High School juniors who are participating in the Lancaster Chamber’s Women in Business Mentoring Program visited the MilanofSchock Library in Mount Joy in March. One requirement of each student active in the program is to participate in a volunteer experience in her local community. The young women identified Milanof-Schock Library as a place where they wanted to spend time and offer their help.

The students took on a number of spring cleaning tasks for the library, including cleaning windows and blinds, shredding papers and organizing books. At the library, the young women learned that the library, though a nonprofit organization, is a business.

They also learned the library is technology-driven in its community services.

The Women in Business Mentoring Program aims to help shape and grow the future leaders of the local workforce by providing guidance, sharing wisdom and offering encouragement to young women

The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown.

FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to demonstrate God’s love in tangible ways, while national pastors or missionaries share the Gospel in some of the most remote locations in the world.

SOFTBALL Playing three-plus games last week, the Lady Pioneers remained perfect on the season. The girls banged out 64 total hits, earned two more shutouts and improved to 8-0 in Section Two, 9-0 overall.

the Falcons 6-5 and played error-free defense but suffered its first loss of the season 5-3. Holding a 3-0 lead after 2.5 innings, the visitors gave up four runs in the bottom of the second and managed just two hits and two walks through the last five frames.

Snyder started on the hill, scattered five hits, gave up four runs, struck out two and walked two. Patrick Holmes struck out two over the final four innings.

Two days later, the Pioneers fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but rallied with four runs in the second and never looked back in a convincing 9-3 win over Warwick (5-3, 6-3 overall).

Shockey’s bases loaded double plated two runs in the fourth while a third scored on the throw. Lampeter’s fourth run of the inning was courtesy of a Warwick error.

L-S scored a single run in the third, Shockey homered in the fourth and Holmes crushed a three run triple in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Shockey (4 RBI), Holmes (3 RBI) and Taso Kovac all finished with two hits on the day.

Byler got the start and earned the win with five innings pitched. He gave up five hits and three earned runs, struck out two and walked one. Doug Schneider (2W) and Karpathios (2K) pitched in relief.

BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ lacrosse team went 1-2 last week with a pair of overtime games.

Monday they hosted Bishop McDevitt and looked to take control early, pushing out to a 4-0 lead at the half and an 8-2 lead after three. The visitors, however, mounted a six goal, fourth quarter come-back and sent the game into overtime where L-S prevailed, 9-8.

Noah Patterson (1a), Connor Nolt (1a) and Noah Davis (2a) all finished with two goals scored while Finn McKinney, Logan Bradley and Stewart McClain each scored once.

In a back-and-forth outing against CV on Wednesday, L-S found the game tied at 5-5 at the half, 8-8 after three and 10-10 when the final buzzer

sounded. Unfortunately, CV’s Will Stone beat Dom Reed (12 saves) for the game-winner.

This was Lampeter’s fourth one goal game of the season and third OT game.

Joey Jordan led all scorers with five goals. Bradley notched a hat trick and Patterson (1a) scored twice. Nolt was tops with three assists.

At Berks Catholic Saturday morning, the visitors found themselves faced with a 6-0 deficit in the first quarter and, despite winning the next two frames 54, gave up four goals in the fourth and suffered a 14-6 non-league defeat.

Patterson led the way with three goals while Jordan (1g), Nolt (1g, 1a), Bradley (1g) and Davis (3a) contributed.

Cutting the lead to one, 4-3, in the bottom of the third, L-S forged ahead for good in the fourth. Garber tripled, with one out, and scored on Peter’s base hit. Blantz singled, Baker connected for a second two run double, and Byler capped the inning with an RBI hit.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE After surviving Central York 11-10 on Saturday, April 6, the girls’ lacrosse team picked up league wins over Elizabethtown and Penn Manor before suffering an 11-goal loss to second place Hempfield on Friday.

Against the one-win Bears, L-S got a game-high nine goals from Kelsey Kimmel and took charge with a 9-3 first half effort. Malaina Bauzon added a hat trick, Riley Dawson netted two goals (1a), Emma Gochnauer scored once and Brittney Zameroski added one assist in a game that featured 26 shots on goal.

Wednesday afternoon the winning ways continued. Behind another 9-goal effort from Kimmel, L-S pushed out to a commanding 12-2 first half advantage and settled for a 20-6 win against the visiting Comets (1-7).

Jeslyn Krebs notched a hat trick in a game that featured eight different scorers. Gochnauer (2g, 2a), Bauzon (2g), Katelyn Smith (1g, 2a), Isabella Beiler (1g), Hannah Gawne (1g), Zameroski (2a) and Dawson (1a) contributed to the attack.

In probably their biggest game of the season to date, L-S battled Hempfield in the first half, entering the break with just a two goal deficit, 7-5. After the break however, the Knights, who have given up just 62 goals to date, stepped up the offense, buckled down on defense and wrapped up the win with a 13-4 half.

They sit in second place behind undefeated Manheim Township. The Pioneers fall to 5-2 (8-3 overall), right behind third place Cocalico (5-1, 7-2).

Kimmel matched her season-low with four goals (1). McKenna Conklin scored three times while Krebs and Kelliann Drummond added one goal each.

BASEBALL In crossover action last week the baseball team went 2-1 and completed the rain suspended game with Solanco on Tuesday, which they won convincingly, 11-1.

L-S posted its second shutout of the season with a complete game, threehitter from Braedon Karpathios. The sophomore finished with 11 strikeouts on the day and did not yield a single free pass in Lampeter’s 9-0 home win over McCaskey.

The hosts plated one run in the first, two in the second and broke the game open with a two-out, five run rally in the fourth. Karpathios, who helped his own cause with a three hit day, reached on an error, Dylan Byler (2-2) was hit by a pitch and Hunter Cunningham (1-2) walked to load the bases. Aaron Snyder’s ground ball was misplayed, scoring the first run while Derek Eckman’s single to left and Alex Knapp’s triple plated two runs each.

Tuesday play resumed against Solanco. The Pioneers held a 4-0 lead after two innings. Both teams traded runs in the sixth and L-S capped the scoring with a four-run seventh.

Eckman’s 3-3, 2 RBI day highlighted a 13-hit attack. Thomas Shockey (2-4) and Joseph Meck (2-3) rounded out the multi hit leaders while Byler added 2 RBI. On the road Wednesday, L-S out hit

The Susquehanna Rivertowns Weekend, featuring three walking events and a bike event, will take place on Friday, April 26, to Sunday, April 28, regardless of the weather. Walks, which will highlight historic sites, will be offered in Columbia, sponsored by Penn Dutch Pacers Volksmarch Club; Marietta, sponsored by Susquehanna Rovers; and Wrightsville, sponsored by York White Rose Wanderers. The biking event, offering 15K to 35K options, will take place in Columbia.

The start point for the noncompetitive walks is Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Participants may start anytime each day between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and they must finish by 4 p.m. They may walk at their own pace, and runners are welcome. Children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and pets will be permitted on the walks.

A bake sale will be taking place during the event, as well.

The Columbia walk will offer 5K and 10K options, with rail trail and sidewalk options available. The walk will feature the Civil War and Underground Railroad history of the town as well as the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

Some historic sites along the way will include Wright’s Ferry Mansion, Mount Bethel Cemetery, and Zion Hill Cemetery, which is the burial site of many black soldiers who fought in the Civil War. During Stars Over the Susquehanna on Friday, April 26, visitors to the Zimmerman Center for Heritage in Wrightsville may explore Native American star stories. Activities will also take place at Columbia Crossing.

Susquehanna Heritage will host Stars Over the Susquehanna, an evening of stargazing and exploring the night sky, at two riverfront sites on Friday, April 26. Both events are free and open to people of all ages.

At Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, Susquehanna Heritage will be joined by the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) for a public star watch party and presentation.

Tom Lugar will present “Naked Eye and Binocular Astronomy in Moderate Light-Polluted Skies” inside Columbia Crossing at 7:30 p.m. to help attendees sharpen their observation skills. After the presentation, attendees will be able to view the night sky with binoculars and through telescopes outside, weather permitting. The telescopes will show a variety of celestial objects, such as the Pleiades star cluster and the Orion nebula. AELC members will also point out various constellations and discuss how to navigate the sky.

The Wrightsville walk will have 6K and 10K options available. The town is recognized as one of the places George Washington considered for being the capital of the United States. The trail will go over the ColumbiaWrightsville Bridge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with the Wrightsville Historic District.

Most of the trail will be on sidewalks, with a bit of roadside walking involved. Organizers note that wheelchairs will have difficulty, with strollers having medium difficulty.

In Marietta, 5K and 10K walks will be offered. The borough was incorporated in 1812 and prospered due to the river commerce; the varied architecture is indicative of this time period. Individuals may combine the Columbia 5K to pick up the Marietta trail, or they may drive 2.6 miles from Columbia Crossing to reach the beginning of the Marietta walking trail. Most of the trail will be on sidewalks, with some roadside walking involved. Wheelchairs will have difficulty due to inclines, and strollers should have medium difficulty.

All are welcome to participate.

There is a nominal cost for those seeking IVV/AVA credit; all others may participate for free. A Baward will be available for the walks for a fee, and New Walker packets may be purchased for those wishing to begin walking for credit.

Sunrise Rotary Plans 16th Annual Ride For Literacy

For the past two years, the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has struggled with wet weather on the days the organization held its annual Ride for Literacy. In 2017, a downpour interrupted the ride, and in 2018, the day started rainy, but cleared up later on.

The lack of sun in recent years, however, has not deterred club members. “Our target is 150 riders,” said organizer Steve Bareuther. This year’s ride will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 11, beginning at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville.

Rolling starts will be held from 7 to 9 a.m.

To make the Ride for Literacy appealing to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, the event will offer four routes with names that correspond to types of literature. The 10-mile family ride is called the Short Story. The Novella will travel through 21 miles of Lancaster countryside, and the Trilogy will span 43 miles of area scenery, showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges. The Epic Metric Century ride of 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles) will be available to challenge the most adventurous riders.

challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata.

Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. A lunch will be available at the park for riders.

In 2018, the Rotary Club partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to provide bikes for people and encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and ridersand nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. One of the organization’s programs works to empower youths through hands-on skills they learn by repairing their own bicycles after school and in the summer. The organization also works with social service agencies to provide bikes for those in need. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com.

Sunrise Rotary Club president Bill Ross noted that starting this year, the club is

offering a new more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals. “We have a car show in Neffsville in the fall, and we are looking for annual sponsorships to include both events,” explained Ross. The 2019 car show will be held in the Neffsville Park in September.

The club has long partnered with the Literary Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, and a portion of what is raised by the ride will be donated to that organization. The club also supports other local community organizations and helps fund international missions, such as sending eye doctors to the Dominican Republic, Nepal, and parts of Africa. The club sends area students to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards at Messiah College.

Sunrise Rotary has also formed a relationship with Carter and MacRae Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster, and the club donates books to the school. Members delivered 30 books to the school in March.

Tournament To Aid Local Families Lancaster County Field of Hope will hold a golf tournament on Saturday, May 4, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Golf will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit local individuals and their families who are facing medical hardships. This year’s recipients include David Brill, Elliott Ross, Michelle Vinelli Adams, Carol Martin, Michele Elliott and the family of

the late Joe Bauder.

The entry fee per golfer includes the course fee, the use of a cart, lunch, dinner, beverages and prizes. The prize for the hole-in-one contest is a barbecue cooker with a hardwood table.

Family Nature Explorers, an hour of woodland exploration for people of all ages, will be held on April 22 from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants will use expedition tools, including bug containers, trowels, and butterfly nets, to learn about the wildlife around them.

On April 22, Compost Is Happening will

explore several ways to compost to help participants choose the best solution for their location and needs and learn about the proper mix of browns and greens to make the best compost possible. The program will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Munchkin Science - Picnic and Hike, a program for children ages 3 to 5, will take place at Pavilion 2, 1055 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, April 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch, which will be followed by a woodland hike.

Fun and Fascination: Wetlands will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, and is open to children ages 6 to 10. A naturalist will lead children in a hands-on exploration of wetland areas near the Environmental Center. Participants should dress for the weather and for spring mud. Children under age 6 with adults are welcome, if accompanying older siblings.
