Historic Rock Ford Plans Presentations, Regency-Era Ball
Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will hold several upcoming events.
On Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m., Historic Rock Ford will host Matthew Dodd as he presents “Songs and Stories of the American Revolution.”
Dressed in Colonial garb, Dodd will take audiences back in time to the days of the American Colonial settlement and the American Revolution. He will use period songs and stories that put the songs into the context of the time to bring to life the days of 1776. A retired teacher and now a full-time musician, Dodd sings and plays the guitar, banjo, and mandolin.
The presentation will be held in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford barn. Visitors may park in the area located behind the barn. Prior to the lecture, attendees may visit the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit.
On Wednesday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m., Kenneth Sensenig will present “The American Revolution and Mennonites: A Crisis of Conscience” as part of Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the Revolution Lecture Series.
In 1777, during the defense of Philadelphia, the peaceful Ephrata Cloister became an unlikely battlefield of conscience as wounded soldiers were brought there for nursing. Sensenig will tell the story of John and Anna Baer, Mennonite pacifists who faced an impossible dilemma: how to care for wounded soldiers

Church Cherishes Its History, Focuses on the Future

BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Willow Street Church
UCC is commemorating its past while looking to the future.
The church, located at 2723 Willow Street Pike, is observing its 150th anniversary and recently launched a daytime community program called WeConnect. WeConnect is held the third Thursday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“While it was created
with older adults in mind, it is open to anyone seeking social connection and community, and the program focuses on bringing people together in a welcoming, inclusive environment,” said Marty Durham, Willow Street Church’s community communications director. The program is free, and a light lunch is provided. Registration is appreciated but not required. To register, call the church office at 717-464-3462.
Allegro Orchestra’s Nextgen Youth Music program has opened registration for auditions for the high school Overture and Allegretto ensembles for the 2026-27 season.
Overture is a full symphonic orchestra for students in grades eight through 12. Through

“We do like them to let us know that they’re coming so that when we plan lunch, we have enough to feed everyone,” outreach coordinator Linda Overly said. Overly added, “WeConnect is an opportunity for people from the community, from our church, to come together, to make connections. We saw one of the biggest deficits in the area is there is no senior center here in Willow Street. Although we have a large number of people in our congregation from Willow Valley, they’re not in need because they have things going on all the time. But the people that live in the community here have nothing that they can connect to.”

Everyone is welcome. “I would say the vast majority of our attendees are seniors, because of availability. Other people are still working,” said Overly. “We always start with an icebreaker so that the people at the tables can get to know a little bit more about each other. But we’ve had a lot of varied activities. We begin with game playing, because we found that that’s an area of interest for a lot of people.”
WeConnect meetings feature board games, card games, puzzles, and arts and crafts. “We’ve had chair yoga,” Everley said. “We’ve had chair exercises. We had
Bright Side Baptist Church in Lancaster city offers a lot of programming to senior citizens, including exercise classes, chair yoga, cooking classes, and social events. As an offshoot of WeConnect, Willow Street Church will partner with Bright Side for a free weekly exercise and strengthening class that will be held every Wednesday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and began on April 8. The class is led by Bright Side Baptist Church but takes place at Willow Street Church.
Willow Street Church UCC will celebrate its 150th anniversary Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. The festivities will begin with a hymn sing on May 16 at 6 p.m. It will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
On May 17, a service honoring the church’s 50-year plus members will be held at 9:30 a.m. Former pastors will also be recognized, said Sue Myers, who is the chairperson of the 150th anniversary committee
A celebration banquet will also take place on May 17 at 11:30 a.m. at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Everyone is welcome, and the meal will be free. Register no later than Saturday, May 2, by calling the church office.
The plated meal will include salad; fruit; dessert; and an entrée of either stuffed chicken, pork tenderloin, or a gluten-free vegan option.
Former Lampeter-Strasburg School District superintendent Robert Frick will be the guest speaker.

Duo Plans Tour Preview Concert
Concert violinist Michael T. Jamanis and his mother, pianist Frances Veri, will present a concert, “From Lancaster to Vienna: A Central European Concert Tour,” on Thursday, April 16. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster.
The concert will preview the works that Jamanis and Veri will perform during a concert tour to Austria, Hungary, and Croatia at the end of April. During the tour, they will present a diverse program ranging from classical masterworks to contemporary compositions. The
duo will perform at Vienna’s Haus der Musik; a new concert hall near Zagreb, Croatia; and in Budapest, Hungary. Veri previously performed in Budapest at the Palace of the Performing Arts.
The preview program will feature works by Antonín Dvořák, Béla Bartók, Gabriel Fauré, George Gershwin, and William Grant Still. It will also include selections from Richard Field’s “Flight of Fancy,” a six-movement suite written for Jamanis and Veri in 2024.

whose cause contradicted their deepest beliefs. From political tensions to the tragic involvement of their own son in horse trading with the British, the Baers’ story is one of unwavering compassion in the face of suspicion. Though they eventually gave their lives to the typhus epidemic while nursing the wounded, their graves remained forgotten for over a century until a chance discovery by a local farmer in 1980 changed everything.
Christa Mylin from Mennonite Life will assist with material artifacts that will be on display at the end of the lecture. There will also be a question-and-answer session.
Sensenig has made a career of education, much of it through the international aid agency known as the Mennonite Central Committee. His perspectives have been shaped by years in Africa as well as by teaching in area schools. Sensenig displays a keen interest in local history and shares this interest in nearby retirement communities. Storytelling activities and projects on his little farm near Akron occupy significant portions of his early retirement time. This presentation will take place in the Langmuir Education Room. Admission will be for the lecture only and does not

include the Snyder Gallery or Hand Mansion.
Historic Rock Ford will present “The Duke’s Ball” on Saturday, May 9, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The immersive Regency-era experience is designed to transport guests into the heart of 18th-century high society with visiting nobility Sebastian, the Duke of Broadleigh.
Set within the grounds of the historic estate, the event will feature a game of croquet, opportunities to learn period dances, and a display of Regency-era fashion. The festivities will culminate in a formal ball and will include special guest performers, curated photo opportunities, and Regency-themed surprises.
Regency-inspired costumes or formal attire are highly encouraged.

General admission tickets will include entry to the ball, three complimentary cocktails with non-alcoholic options available, and a selection of heavy hors d’oeuvres. A limited number of VIP tickets will be available and will include all general admission perks plus an exclusive VIP cocktail experience before the main event. VIP guests will also enjoy private photo opportunities, receive take-home handcrafted silhouettes and watercolor portraits, and be addressed as “Lord” or “Lady” throughout the evening.
A cash bar will be available later in the evening. In addition, a limited number of silhouettes and watercolor portraits will be available for purchase by general admission guests.
Tickets for all events may be purchased at www .historicrockford.org/ special-events.

Arbor Day Celebration Posted
The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum at LancasterHistory will host an April Nature Series event, “Leaf and Learn: A Celebration of Arbor Day,” on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. A variety of activities will be available. Lancaster County senior naturalist Lisa Sanchez will lead tree walks at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Len Eiserer will present “Tanger’s America250 Tree and the Patriot Oak” at noon. The Nodding Onion Band will perform post-rock music featuring electrical frequencies from plants from 10 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments
will be available while supplies last, and vendors will offer information from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids’ activities will include a story time and craft, suggested for those ages 3 to 7, at 10 a.m. and a nature scavenger hunt, suggested for those ages 6 to 12, at noon.
A bitternut hickory tree (Carya cordiformis) planted in commemoration of the United States’ 250th birthday will be dedicated at 11:15 a.m. The bitternut hickory was selected due to Lancaster’s ties to hickories. When settlers arrived in the Lancaster area in the 1700s, hickory trees were prevalent, earning the town its first name, Hickorytown. Hickory forests were vast and thick and
cultivated by local Native Americans for food and medicinal purposes. The tree was instrumental to early life in Lancaster, also providing wood for furniture, flooring, and tools. All events are free and open to the public. The event will take place rain or shine, with most programs held outdoors in fair weather and moved indoors in the event of rain. For more information and registration for individual activities, visit www.lan casterhistory.org/arborday. Questions can be directed to Emily Miller at emily.miller@ lancasterhistory.org.
The event sponsors are Pine Brook Farm Inc. and Ever Green Tree and Lawn Care.

demanding music and professional instruction, students will develop advanced abilities on their instruments, as well as an understanding of how to perform in a full orchestra setting. Overture is under the direction of conductor Scott Kaliszak and assistant conductor Anthony Scheuerman.
The Allegretto Chamber Orchestra is Nextgen’s premier ensemble for advanced students in grades eight through 12. Allegretto demands the utmost musicianship and professionalism of students in a chamber orchestra setting. Students in this ensemble receive guidance and instruction

to perform standard repertoire and newly composed orchestral music. Allegretto is under the direction of founding conductor Brian Norcross and assistant conductor Francis Caravella.
These musical opportunities are unique and designed to enhance what the students can learn in their normal scholastic musical experiences.

During the 2025-26 season, Overture and Allegretto gave combined performances, providing a unique experience to students. Allegretto students had the opportunity to experience a full symphonic orchestra setting, and Overture students were challenged by some of Allegretto’s advanced repertoire.
Allegro Nextgen aims to develop a love of the creative endeavor through exceptional, positive rehearsal and performance opportunities of varied, high-quality repertoire, with a wide range of performance ensembles.
The Nextgen team believes that every child should have the opportunity to develop his or her intellectual and artistic capacity through playing a musical instrument and participating in a variety of musical ensembles and opportunities.
Auditions for the 202627 season of Overture and Allegretto will be held from Saturday, May 30, to Monday, June 1, at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. Parents may register their students at https://tinyurl .com/55934j9d.

History Presentation to Focus on Medicine

The Strasburg Heritage Society will sponsor a program on Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. at the Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg.
Diane Whitcomb will present “Medicine in the 1800s: The Healing, The Harmful, The Quackery.” In the 1800s, people were unaware of germs, bloodletting was a common treatment for illness, mercury was a common medication, and bad air was thought to cause some diseases.
Whitcomb will share how medicine was practiced in the 1800s, including how to make pills using an antique pill roller.
Whitcomb is a retired family nurse practitioner with an interest in the history of medicine and use of herbs as medicine in the 1700s and 1800s. She tries to keep this history alive by storytelling, hands-on items, demonstrations, and discovering how the past use of herbs has influenced present-day medications.
Whitcomb lives in Mount Joy with her husband and dog. She is the mother of three and grandmother of five. She is growing a Colonial herbal medicine garden to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The program is free of charge. Prizes will be given to all attendees ages 6 to 15.
Community Meal Planned
Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, April 16.
Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge. Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.
