Garden Tea Party To Feature Pretty Pots By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Upon hearing about a menu that includes cucumber mint sandwiches on white bread, ham salad puffs, almond chicken salad on rye or marbled bread, egg-and-olive salad on wheat bread, glazed nuts, white chocolate-dipped apricots, dates filled with peanut butter, pretzel flowers, seasoned oyster crackers, graham cracker bars, a crudité platter, lemon truffles, miniature coconut cupcakes, miniature fruit pizzas, chocolate mousse tarts, and miniature snickerdoodle cookies, one might think that the food is the star of the garden tea party set for 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. However, the tea party is only the first part of the event. Putting the “garden” into the party will be Christine
Abel, a Master Gardener and a professional designer of container gardens and potted plants. Abel will give a presentation on assembling flower pots, with an emphasis on summer-loving plants. Abel said she is hoping that attendees will not hesitate to ask questions as she goes along. Some of the topics Abel plans to discuss include the nuances of light, watering, some of her favorite tools, soil types, fertilizer, and deadheading. She will provide a handout with important information, and she will also demonstrate planting techniques. “My strategy is ‘never see the soil’ (when filling a container),” Abel said. Container garden design is a second career for Abel, who had worked for a telephone company in Lancaster before she and her family moved to the Southern End about two decades ago. Unfamiliar with the area, Abel took some See Garden Tea Party pg 8

Orchestra, Mandolin Duo Will Perform Calvary Baptist To Host “Passion: The Musical” Piercing Word will present the drama “Passion: The Musical” at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, on Good Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. “This is a powerful presentation of the Gospel and how Jesus fulfills everything written about Him in the Old Testament,” said Piercing Word artistic
director Caleb Hughes. “We’ve framed the piece with a modern-day, urban concept that offers a compelling perspective on the Last Supper, trial, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The beauty of the music and the truth of the words combine to create a powerful piece.” See Calvary Baptist Church pg 9
