Members of the Strasburg Borough Shade Tree

Committee will plant free trees for property owners this spring.

Echternach has a personal history with the tree program. “My home was built in 1965 by my parents, and I have one of the original trees in my yard - a Scarlet oak tree,” he shared.

According to the Shade Tree Committee, for every 5% increase of tree canopy, stormwater runoff decreases by 2%. “The nickname for our county is (the) garden spot (of America); we are a very good county for planting,” said Echternach, noting that he is not exactly sure how the original committee came to be all those years ago. “I can only assume that there always has been a sense in this community that trees are important and that we promote that.”

Order forms, lists of available trees and requirements are available by visiting www.strasburgboro.org, choosing Boards and Commissions and clicking on Shade Tree Committee. Completed forms may be submitted to the borough office, 145 Precision Ave., Strasburg, or residents may fax them to 717-687-6599 or email them to karubincam@strasburgboro.org.

Village

Park frompg 1

“Village Park is looked at and viewed as a hub for the community,” said McGuire. “We looked for ways to make Lampeter more of a village, so we built a trail for children to follow from the school campus to the YMCA facility. We wanted people to be able to access it, and we will always keep a trail intact.”

When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings.

The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings.

Readers who are interested in joining or forming a BASIS group may call Dan at 717-859-4777 or email dsteinman@hvmi.org. More information about BASIS may be found at www.hvmi.org.
