Easter egg hunt to return to LUMC
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Nowthat spring is right around the corner, many family favorite traditions are returning alongside the greenery and blooming trees throughout the county. One such tradition is Easter egg hunts, and one of these will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine event will be free to attend and open to children 12 years old and younger, and participants should bring baskets
During the event, the children will be divided into four age groups. Each group will have its own egg hunt, snacks, refreshments and crafting activities and will begin the activities with a reading of a children’s Easter story. In the egg hunt activity, certain Easter eggs will have gold coins hidden in them; children who find one of these special eggs will be able to select a prize
at the end of the hunt. Prizes will include plush animals, kids’ science kits, coloring books, jump ropes, footballs, baseball bats, frisbees and baby dolls.
LUMC has been hosting the annual egg hunt for decades. Many of the parents who take their children today attended the event when they were children. Last year, however, LUMC began to overhaul its activities for the event as a larger initiative to revamp the church’s programming. After welcoming several new members to the planning committee, the church shifted more of its focus to the children’s and youth ministry. “We’ve been focused on bringing younger families in,” said Sarah Short, a coordinator for the egg hunt and an LUMC member.
“Last year was the biggest egg hunt that we’ve had to date. Over 300 people attended.”
In addition to expanding existing events, LUMC is also introducing new fundraisers and activities for
the community. On Saturday, April 22, at 5 p.m., the church will host a paint night in its all-purpose room. Participants in the activity will each receive a canvas and follow a template to paint a landscape; adults will follow an advanced template to illustrate a waterfall, and children will paint a floral piece. Painters will then be able to bring their masterpieces home with them. There will be a set price for attendance, and light snacks and refreshments will be available.
The funds raised from the paint night will be used for LUMC’s vacation Bible school expenses and the costs associated with the annual Harvest Festival. The vacation Bible school program, Camp VBS, will be held in June and will include a curriculum of original content written by the church’s youth director. LUMC will have a table at the Easter egg hunt for parents to sign their kids up for the program.

In the beginning of March, Piggy Hill Art Studio, 2 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, kicked off The Orchestra Sings program for students to learn about classical music. Students meet every Friday at the studio to learn about different composers, classical instruments and orchestral concerts. The program will conclude with an interactive concert at McCaskey High School on Tuesday, May 16.
The Orchestra Sings is a music education program offered by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, which provides the curriculum to students across the country. The program is geared toward students in fourth through sixth grades; however, some younger students with previous musical experience are enrolled as well. Piggy Hill Art Studio has opened the classes to homeschooled children in addition to those in public or private school.

A symphony for students Join author Robert Dugoni for a talk
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having another author event?’” she said with a laugh. Thankfully for Steinhauer, the answer is “yes.” The Council of Friends will host awardwinning author Robert Dugoni on Thursday, April 13, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 11 a.m.
Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Dugoni is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane legal thriller series. Additionally, he has written several standalone novels, including “The 7th Canon,” “Damage Control,” “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel” and “The World Played Chess.” Ticket holders for the April talk will receive a copy of Dugoni’s latest novel, “Her Deadly Game.”

Dugoni will be joined on stage by Scott LaMar of WITF, who will facilitate the conversation. A book signing and a meet-and-greet with the author will be held after the event.
“Robert Dugoni is a really great writer,” Steinhauer said. “I read ‘The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell’ in two days. I could not put it down.”
She noted that the Council of Friends has been offering author talks for 22 years, and the events always draw a crowd. “Typically, we have anywhere from 300 to 500 people that come,” she said, stating that the church makes a perfect venue. “Everybody will be able to hear and see
what’s going on. There are two big screens and a great sound system.”
The Council of Friends of Public Libraries, founded in 2000, is made up of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. The author events are fundraisers for the public libraries in the county, and to date, the group has raised more than $140,000. This year, the Council of Friends has established a partnership with Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg, which will provide copies of Dugoni’s backlist books to purchase at the event.
Steinhauer noted that the author event will include time
for questions from the audience. “It’s always a life-altering experience to actually hear the author and ask questions or hear questions being asked,” she said. “To be in the presence of people who are so creative and someone who provides so much to us in terms of reading, it’s really incredible. … I find that it’s really a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, and when people leave, they are inspired. I have yet to see where that hasn’t happened.”

Orchestra Sings frompg 1
During the classes, students explore seven pieces of music, including pieces from India, songs in Spanish and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” For certain pieces, students will learn singing parts; for other pieces, they will learn how to play small instrument parts. The curriculum will introduce the kids to different melodies and rhythms, famous composers and orchestral instruments.
The concert at the end of the program will be interactive and has been designed for a younger audience. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will perform the pieces for a student audience, and each participating class will engage in a different aspect of each song. While some students will sing along, others will play melodies on recorders, and some will simply be involved by listening to the music.
Musicians from the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will guide the students through the performance while its conductor offers the young musicians direction.
“None of the kids in my class have ever been to an orchestra before,” said Lori Rublesky, owner of Piggy Hill Art Studio. “Some of them
have seen orchestras on TV before, but to have them learning about them and participating in one is so exciting.” This is the first year that Piggy Hill Art Studio has offered the program, and Rublesky hopes to continue hosting it next year. So far, the students in her class have listened to a variety of compositions to learn about string, woodwind and percussion instruments and have focused on distinguishing different parts of a song.
Rublesky opened Piggy Hill Art Studio in 2022, but she has been teaching music lessons from her home in Drumore Township for several years. Rublesky still resides in the Southern End but wanted to open a studio in a less remote area to engage with the community more. In addition to its classes, Piggy Hill Art Studios offers live music, art courses, music lessons and community events such as a monthly barn dance. “Kids can come to develop their portfolios for college or hone their talents to get into a conservatory,” Rublesky said. “We have a lot of fun and some great teachers.”

Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) has announced that Daniel D. Mast and Jennie Weaver Groff and Jonathan Groff are the 2022 Alumni of the Year. The Alumni of the Year awards are presented annually to alumni who have recently made a significant contribution through service in their community, profession, family, or church. Recipients are selected from nominations made by LM alumni; members of the Alumni Association, faculty, or board of directors; and other friends of LM.
Dan, Class of 1977, lives in Willow Street and is a practicing physician of internal medicine at Union Community
Care in Lancaster, with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. After serving with Indian Health Service and as an internist and early hospitalist with CIGNA in Arizona in the ’90s, he returned to Pennsylvania and private internal medicine/geriatric practice. His practice provided hospital, office, long-term, and wound care. He served as medical director for three wound centers combined with clinical teaching of students, residents and fellows. He has served as a board officer for Landis Communities and its long-term care facility. His passion is for serving and caring for a diverse range of elders, balanced with mentoring and teaching the
next generation to be competent and compassionate medical caregivers.
Dan and his late wife, Cindy, have four adult children, who are all alumni of LM, and five grandchildren. Dan is a member of the James Street Mennonite Church community. Dan has been faithful donor to LM, and Cindy was a longtime board member at the school. In the spring of 2022, Dan donated a Southern magnolia to LM, which the Mast family gathered to plant in honor of Cindy’s caring legacy.

Pioneers record third PIAA win in school history
B Y MONA STEINHAUER
This year’s group of Pioneer hoopsters did what last year’s dream team could not do; they won a PIAA Class 5A opening round game, becoming just the third team in L-S history to do so. That win, a 64-56 result at Central Mountain, came on Saturday, March 11.
Luke Hines was all but unstoppable, bucketing a career-high 29 points to spark the win.
“He was a stat sheet stuffer,” lauded head coach Ed Berryman. “He was 4-4 from three-point range, 6-12 from two, hit five of six free throws, and picked up eight rebounds, two steals, one block and dished out five assists against a single turnover. He was incredible.”
And his supporting cast also provided solid play. Justin Glick knocked down 18 points and grabbed four rebounds all while face guarding the Wildcat’s top player, Hayden Paredo.
“Pardo did have 19 points but six of them were free throws,” noted Berryman. “Justin had a big game.
“Our game plan was to stop their top two guys, Hanna, and Pardoe, and see if the others could beat us. We used our reverse triangle and two and got a lot of sagging help
from everyone. They were frustrated.”
This one was close through the first three quarters. L-S, after falling behind 8-2, ran off 11 straight points and held a 13-8 lead in the first quarter but fell off pace a bit in the second.
Pardo (9 pts) and Hanna (7 pts) rallied CM for an 18-13 quarter advantage and knotted the score at 26 all on a three-ball with 41 ticks left in the half.
Hines knocked down backto-back three’s to start the third quarter. He finished with 10 of Lampeter’s 13 points and the Pioneers held a 39-36 lead with eight minutes remaining.
L-S nailed three treys (Hines, Glick, and Chase Smucker) in the fourth to help open a 52-39 advantage. CM cut the lead to six, 56-50 on four straight points by Pardo with 1:45 remaining but could get no closer. Smucker went 4-5 from the free throw line over the final 22 seconds to help preserve the win.
“Chase did a great job handling their pressure,” Berryman said. “He had five assists and just one turnover.”
Smucker finished with 11 points, and Yasin Abdi added six. Dean Herr helped Smucker in the ball-handling department while Tim Holmes and Trent Wagner provided defen-
sive help in reserve roles.
Unfortunately, at this point of the season, only one team finishes with a win. Lampeter’s quest for a PIAA crown came to a halt in their second-round game in Altoona Tuesday, March 14. In a battle between two evenly matched teams, the Pioneers fell short 58-56 to Peters Township.
Down 58-54 with 11 seconds remaining, a bucket by Smucker cut it to two. L-S then forced a turnover to regain possession. They managed two shots over the final seven seconds but couldn’t get one to drop.
“We didn’t have a timeout left at that point,” said Berryman. “We ran a play that got Chase a decent 15-footer. Yasin somehow came up with the rebound and threw it out to Dean whose three-pointer rimmed out. Gosh we were right there. And considering Luke was in foul trouble the entire game and played maybe 15 minutes, the guys really stepped up,” he added. “I definitely didn’t agree with the calls against Luke but what can you do?”
L-S turned the ball over five times in the first four minutes against Peters defensive pressure. Peter’s, on the other hand, a typically solid 3-point shooting team missed its first four long range shots and canned just one of 14 in the first quarter. All that noted, the Indians held a slim 11-10 edge at the end of the first quarter.
“We only turned the ball over six times after that first quarter,” noted Berryman. “We did a better job as the game went on.”
The Pioneers struggled offensively to start the second quarter and fell behind 19-10 before a Trent Wagner free throw added to the L-S tally. Down 25-15 with 1:30 left in the quarter, L-S dug deep. Abdi opened a 7-0 run with a shot in the paint and Herr followed with a trey and converted a give-and-go to cut the lead to 25-22.
A Herr trey early in the third tied the game at 30-30 and Smucker’s traditional three-
point play one minute later put L-S in front 34-33. A big bucket by Holmes and a trey by Wagner kept L-S in front 39-36 but only briefly as Peters finished the frame on a 7-2 run to take a 43-41 lead.
The fourth quarter proved to be the closest. Peters opened with a trey for the largest lead of the quarter. L-S again fought back. Herr hit the first of two free throws, but Holmes rebounded the miss and dished to Herr who knocked down another three, tying the game at 49-49 with 3:56 left to play.
Abdi’s jumper knotted the score at 51-51. Glick’s bucket with 31 ticks remaining cut the lead to 56-54 while Smucker’s slashing layup made it 58-56 and capped Lampeter’s scoring.

Lampeter’s Luke Hines scored 24 points in a road win over Catholic High on January 3. The senior put up a career-high 29 points in the Pioneers’ PIAA opening round win over Central Mountain on Saturday, March 11. It was Lampeter’s third PIAA win in school history.
Free throws proved critical in this one. The Pioneers went 12-20 with Smucker going 5-5. Peters hit 19 of 27 and 6-8 in the fourth quarter.
Herr paced the scoring for L-S with 16 points and Smucker added 13. Abdi followed with nine. Hines and Glick, also plagued by fouls, each had six points. Wagner (4) and Holmes (2) also contributed.
The loss leaves the Pioneers with a 20-8 record. Peters Township, who advanced with a 60-53 first round win over Milton Hershey, improved to 24-4.
“Who would have thought we would make the second round of states after Ben Wert went down,” said Berryman. “I’m incredibly proud of this group. It was a great season. Obviously, a disappointing finish but we have four of
our five starters back so we’re looking forward to next year.”
BOWLING
The bowling team celebrated a successful season at their end-of-the-year banquet on Thursday, March 9th where head coach John Achille, voted Coach of the Year, pointed out their achievements.
“This was an amazing three-year turnaround,” said Achille. “We went from 17-67 to 41-50 to 88-24 this year. We’re looking forward to defending our Section 3 championship next year with everyone back!”
Lampeter’s 88 wins were the most by any team in the league. They qualified for the L-L playoffs but lost to Elizabethtown in the opening round. Individually, Ethan Snyder, Maddux Harsh, Nick Bukowski and Peter Mecouch also qualified, as did Kaite
Pope who received an eighthplace medal.
Pope was also a regional and district qualifier.
Bukowski also received a medal for the Section 3 season-high series, a 708.
Snyder was a Section 3 allstar and the team’s Most Valuable Player.
BASKETBALL ALL-STARS
As voted on by the Lancaster-Lebanon League coaches, a handful of Pioneer hoopsters were recognized for their efforts on the hardwoods.
Luke Hines, Chase Smucker, Ben Wert and Katie Ranck all received first team recognition with head coach Ed Berryman voted as Coach of the Year.
Ranck was also voted as a defensive all-star and an academic all-star.
Anna Horner was a second team all-star.

Tax credits bring cutting-edge technology to local company
The Lancaster City Alliance, in partnership with Triode Media Group, recently announced that a Colossus Robotic Camera Arm now resides in Lancaster at the Triode headquarters. The precision camera can extend 12 feet in the air, and obtaining it positions Lancaster citybased Triode as a hub for film production companies across the East Coast.
Triode’s participation in the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) tax credit program, managed by the Lancaster City Alliance, provided the opportunity to purchase the piece of equipment.
According to Evan Scud-
ner, executive producer at Triode, the new technology allows for complex camera movements that would otherwise be impossible to create with conventional filming practices. With the new video equipment, Triode can now support film productions across the region, potentially attracting clients from New York City and Washington, D.C. Triode’s specially trained crew can also travel to client destinations with the camera and gear.
The KIZ is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania incentive program that offers tax credits to qualified businesses focused on innovations in
technology, science and manufacturing. Last year, Lancaster KIZ distributed the maximum eligible tax credit of $100,000 to Triode. Two
other city businesses also received the KIZ tax credit. VIZpin Inc. received $95,826, and Creative Coding Group Inc. received $9,074.
