Lampeter-Strasburg

Bingo event will benefit Strasburg park, fire company

Two Strasburg organizations that rely on volunteers and community contributions are joining forces again for a fundraiser that will benefit both groups.

The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and Strasburg Fire Company No. 1 will hold a Bingo, Baskets & Beef BBQ event on Saturday, March 22. The event will be held at the Strasburg Fire Company, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the bingo games will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets include 10 games of regular cash bingo. Everyone is required to purchase a ticket to be able to enter and play. Tickets are available at the door on the day of the event. Every child must always be accompanied by an adult, and the child must have purchased bingo cards for admission.

Three special bingo games will be played, with tickets for sale for an additional fee.

Participants will also be able to buy tickets for a chance to win more than 25 different baskets.

Barbara Rathbone-Frank, who is the secretary of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and the event chairperson, said there will be a variety of baskets, with many of them having a spring or Easter theme.

“This is a win-win-win-win event for the Strasburg Community Park, the fire company, the Strasburg-area community, and those who enjoy playing bingo,” said Rathbone-Frank. “We joined together to hold bingo last March and October. It was great to see how popular the events were. The

Strasburg Fire Company members helped to create more spacious seating for our guests for this bingo. We can now accommodate many more participants for a fun evening out.”

Barbecue sandwiches, soup, and other refreshments will be prepared by the fire police. Food will be available for sale before and during the bingo event.

“It works really well because they don’t want to do bingo, and we don’t want to do food,” Rathbone-Frank said with a smile. “And they’re really good

with food.”

The fire company receives the proceeds from food sales while the park benefits from money generated by bingo games.

“We needed a fundraiser to help us,” said Rathbone-Frank. “We send out an annual fund drive letter because we don’t get any tax money. We have to raise all our money.”

The park previously held car shows, but they were dependent on the weather. “We wanted an indoors event, so that’s why we started the bingo,” she said.

Three Lampeter-Strasburg High School students played integral roles in helping Warwick capture the Central Pennsylvania Ice Hockey League (CPIHL) Viola Cup title with a dramatic 3-2 triumph over Penn Manor Feb. 26 in Hersheypark Arena.

L-S senior forward Gavin Tipping was the first player to raise the Viola Cup, an honor reserved for the winning team’s captain.

“It was a great feeling to be the first to lift the cup,” he said.

“Everyone was so deserving of it. Everybody on that team was a leader themselves, and I had fun going through the ups and downs with this great team.”

Warwick assistant coach Anthony Greco said Tipping has been a leader since joining the team. “I’ve been on the coaching staff for all three years Gavin has been on the team,” Greco said.

“We could tell from the first day he was different and special. He commands the locker room and the players’ attention. Multiple times during the season, the coaches would leave the locker room and let Gavin address the team on his own. That happened again before the third period (of the championship game). The

Warriors’ goalie Ryan Trunfio and forward/ defenseman Luke Carson are both juniors at L-S. “Playing with those two has always been fun,” said Tipping. “We never took anything seriously until game day. We would always see each other in the hallway at school and mess around and talk hockey. They played great and were a needed force in our win. L-S had great support toward the three of us.”

Trunfio made 40 saves in the title game, drawing praise from teammates and opponents. “(Warwick’s) goalie, Ryan Trunfio, played amazing and kept them in the game,” said Penn Manor senior Nick Michener. “It was a back-and-forth game, and either team could have come out victorious.”

Trunfio seized the starting job in the first

playoff game. “We were fortunate to have two grade-A goalies with Ryan and Austin Enslin,” Greco said. “Ryan had the hot hand, so we stayed with him. We went undefeated in the playoffs, so Ryan was well-rested coming into the game. I think he would rather face 45 shots than 25.”

Trunfio said, “Communication throughout the whole defensive corps was good. Everybody was nice to each other. Building a good relationship helped a lot.”

Carson’s versatility was on display in the championship contest. “Luke is one of the better two-way players on the team,” said Greco. “He is our Swiss Army Knife. We started him at forward in the championship game, and then we moved him back to defense. He’s adaptable and willing to do whatever he needs to do to help Warwick get a win.”

Warwick High School senior Koby Zimmerman tallied the game-winning goal on a breakaway with

37 seconds remaining in regulation.

Penn Manor had two one-goal leads thanks to a pair of power play goals. Noah Westermann put the Comets on the board 3:43 into the game by

firing in a shot from the faceoff dot to the right of the cage.

Warwick answered eight and a half minutes later when Cole Breckenmaker scored from the right side of the net. Zimmerman picked up the primary assist and Tipping was credited with the secondary assist.

The Comets reclaimed the lead at the 7:06 mark of the second period as Jonathon Boozer scored off a rebound from a shot by Sebastian Elias.

The game’s turning point came with 2:05 left in the stanza. A Warwick penalty gave the Comets a chance to score a third power play goal and go up by two scores, but it was the Warriors that seized the momentum. A pass from Hunter Popolis sent Zimmerman in on a shorthanded breakaway, and he tied the game.

Seeking the go-ahead goal, Penn Manor dominated stretches of the third period, but it appeared the game would be decided in overtime. That’s when Zimmerman broke free, skated in alone on goal, deked the goalie, and slid a backhand shot into the net.

Penn Manor did not get a shot in the final 37 seconds. “(The title) means a lot,” Trunfio said. “Being able to win one of the biggest high school cups around here is really special.”

Goalie Ryan Trunfio makes a save in the championship game.

Dinner will celebrate 30 years of LightShine Ministries

For three decades, LightShine Ministries in Mount Joy has been bringing the love and light of God to the people of Alaska. You can support this mission at a dinner celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary.

The meal will be held at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will start with appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., members of LightShine Ministries will share testimonies and discuss the 17 mission teams serving this year as well as longterm goals of the ministry, said Nancy Shaffer, who is organizing the event. Dinner will feature roast turkey, stuffing, baked ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes and a large

assortment of homemade desserts.

LightShine International Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Tom Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state.

Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.

“For 30 years, we have been offering assistance to brothers and sisters in Christ by helping them build His Kingdom in

the hearts of the people in Alaska,” Shaffer said.

“We offer short-term missionary opportunities for people who love people, love the outdoors and desire to serve in places where churches need help.”

The organization assists churches in remote areas to build Bible camps and maintain their church buildings.

“Our calling is unique,” Shaffer said. “Men and women who do not feel gifted to preach or start churches have been encouraged throughout the years by using their hands to serve the Lord by working with us. We make it our goal not only to minister to the church we are serving, but also to encourage our team members as well.”

She invites anyone who is interested in discovering

more about the ministry to come to the dinner.

“This is our first fundraising dinner for our ministry,” she said. “The dinner is to raise funds to complete our mission base located in Palmer, Alaska. The projects include finishing the upstairs of the house, building a garage for the mission base director and his wife living at the base and then building a main garage to house our vehicles and tools.”

Coming to the event provides an opportunity to hear directly from the people serving, she said.

“This is a great way to hear about the ministry work we do in Alaska, meet the different team leaders and team members who have served in Alaska and hear from the hosts we serve in Alaska,” she explained. “If

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

Of all the ways to make the world a better place, communication is among the most important. The deaf and hard of hearing live in a world where it can be difficult to communicate with many people.

Keystone Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Lancaster teaches sign language, an important tool in bridging that communication gap. Although learning sign language can be involved and complex, it seems even the least amount of knowledge can be beneficial to the deaf and hard of hearing.

“It would be great if everyone knew sign language,” said Kandy Reyes, who’s been KDHHS’ executive director for 24 years. “That way the deaf and hard of hearing would have the same opportunities as everyone else. It would be a great world. Deaf people can’t walk into a bank without a sign language interpreter.”

Located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, KDHHS of Lancaster offers two sign language classes in the spring and one in the fall. The sign language classes are taught once a week for eight weeks, they are designed for entry-level

learners and beginners and the class size is limited to 15 participants.

“Sign language is the way deaf individuals communicate,” said Reyes. “It’s the way they hear. It’s their language. If you’re a visual learner, you may be able to pick up sign language easier. American Sign Language is just like any other language.”

“Our classes are designed for fun,” Reyes continued. “They aren’t designed for people who want to be fluent in sign language. If you want to become a certified sign language interpreter, you could start

Initiative aims to improve veterans’ access to health care

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a new initiative with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) to connect veterans in rural areas with telehealth and mental health resources.

The PA Turnpike posted flyers at rest areas across its more than 565-mile road system to help connect veterans to VA resources. The flyers share information about veterans’ telehealth options, the closest VA location, and the Veterans Crisis Line to empower veterans in crisis or others concerned about

faculty, and sponsored a hat and mitten tree with the clothes

“SkillsUSA is important because as a student who has been in multiple clubs before, SkillsUSA has been the most beneficial for me,” said Ky Logan, who is a veterinary assistant student from Elizabethtown.

“It has helped me grow socially and build connections with others who have fields of studies in different areas or the same interests as me. There are also many different opportunities for community service, which some schools require. I think it’s beneficial SkillsUSA provides that opportunity for students to be able to get those hours that they may need to meet graduation requirements.”

Ky added, “It’s not just a club for me. The competitions and community service projects we do are important.”

Sara Rager, an aspiring patient care technician from Manheim Township, stated that being part of SkillsUSA has helped her improve her grades.

“We get to come together and form something special,” said Sara. “That’s why I feel like it’s so much more than a club, as Ky said. It has helped each individual, especially me, with thriv -

ing and striving for what I want.”

One of 21 Willow Street campus students who competed in the SkillsUSA district competition, Sara finished first in extemporaneous speaking to earn a trip to the state competition, which will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 2 to 4, in Hershey.

At districts, Sara was given five minutes to do research for her speech with the topic, “How has responsibility made you grow in SkillsUSA, and why is it important?”

“I told them about my experiences in SkillsUSA and how I work with a team,” Sara said. “In the past, I’ve had a hard time working with a team, and now, I’ve worked with a lot of intelligent minds and brilliant people, and we can come up with a lot of great ideas.”

Grace Wagner, a dental assistant student from Solanco, also finished first at districts and will compete at states.

“I’m super excited, looking forward to my state competition,” said Grace. “I’ve been working very hard, studying hard recently for that, and I’m excited to see what the outcome will be.”

Grace said she joined SkillsUSA because of the advice of her instructor

Rachel Sprecher. “I had been having thoughts about doing it before, but I wasn’t too confident,” said Grace, who is considering returning to LCCTC for postsecondary education.

It’s a Central Region workshop to prepare delegates for the procedures and events at the April state competition in Hershey.

“I decided to listen to her advice, and I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’m very grateful that she encouraged me to do that because I feel like this (club) is going to lead to very large opportunities for my education and my future.”

Britney Valentin, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, attended the state delegate conference on March 5 at the Dauphin County Technical School.

“Being a delegate means to have an important role in helping shape the future of SkillsUSA,” said Britney. Mason Houser, a diesel equipment and technology student from Lampeter-Strasburg, competed in districts. “I wanted to test my skills, how quickly I can do tasks, and to see how much I actually know,” said Mason. “I chose the CTC for the diesel program. My uncle worked in diesel as a semitruck operator, and I grew up on that (and thought), ‘Hey, I want to do this.’”

Strasburg Community Park

In addition to regular upkeep, money raised from the bingo event is earmarked for the park’s pavilion and stage. Designed to look similar to a barn, they must be stained every five years. It will take a couple years to raise all the funds necessary for that project, Rathbone-Frank said. Last year, the park’s trails were redone.

“This time of year, a lot of people are suffering from cabin fever,” said Rathbone-Frank, who is being assisted by Justin Tekely, LaJune Ranck, and other volunteers. “They haven’t gotten to see a lot of people. Bingo is a lot of fun, and people can also help their community.”

The Strasburg Community Park is a 12-acre nature park that features walking trails and native landscape plants. In the summer, the park hosts four free, family-friendly concerts at the outdoor amphitheater. The park is located at 151 Precision Ave. in Strasburg, adjacent to the Strasburg Borough Complex, Lancaster County Art Association, Strasburg-Heisler Library, and Sunshine Corners Daycare. The Strasburg Fire Company responds to more than 200 emergency and fire calls each year. Fundraisers for both organizations provide the main financial support for their operating budgets. with our program, but you would have to go into more intense programs like the ones taught in college.”

Shown to be more accurate than lip reading, sign language is based on certain hand gestures or motions. Each sign corresponds to a number, letter or word, and when those signs are put together, sentences and communication are formed.

“The first thing you’re going to do in that course is learn about deaf culture,” said Reyes. “The instructor is going to go into words, numbers and teaching you the alphabet. In Level One, you’re going to learn words, but it’s not going to qualify you to speak a whole sentence to a deaf person. So, when they’re signing back to you, are you going to understand them? Probably not.”

“Signing could be done on one hand or two,” continued Reyes. “The alphabet you can do all on one hand, and numbers you can do all on one hand. With American Sign Language, you don’t use all the words. ... You’re getting to the point. In English, you’d say, ‘The

tree is over there.’ In sign language, you’d say, ‘Tree there.’”

According to numbers from a recent census, nearly 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

“Sign language is the key to access,” said Reyes. “But you have to know what you know. If you don’t, you’re creating even bigger barriers. That’s the problem. We support anyone and encourage everyone who wants to learn sign language. A little bit is better than nothing in certain situations.”

“Deaf and hard-ofhearing people have a language,” added Reyes. “People shouldn’t minimize that, and they should respect the deaf and hardof-hearing people and ask them how they want to communicate. The majority are going to say, ‘I need an American Sign Language interpreter.’”
