Audiences Invited To Discover “The Secret Garden”

Producing “The Secret Garden” at Lampeter-Strasburg High School has been all about timing. In addition to ensuring lines are delivered at the right time and set changes occur when scheduled, director Kevin Ditzler and music director Erik Welchans also had to deliberately plan when to perform the show.

“This has been on our list for several years,” Ditzler said. “We have had a fondness for this show, but we waited for a particular combination of voices.”

Ditzler noted that the cast includes fewer male characters, but the men who appear do have some delightful musical numbers. He remarked that a duet between brothers Archibald Craven (Logan Emmert) and Dr. Craven (Braeden Weaver) is especially impactful. The other leads in the show include Crosby Renninger as Mary

Lennox, Jack Harnish as Colin Craven, Rowen Krantz as Dickon, and Jessica Heisey as Lily Craven. “We have some great people to fill these roles,” Ditzler said.

The musical version of “The Secret Garden” premiered on Broadway in 1991 and appeaeed on Broadway for more than a year. The book and lyrics are by Marsha Norman, with music by Lucy Simon. It is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. In the story, after 10-year-old Mary Lennox is orphaned in India during a cholera epidemic at the turn of the 20th century, she is sent to Misselthwaite Manor in a remote part of England.

There, she discovers a cousin she never knew existed and a secret garden. Mary is befriended by a local boy, Dickon, and, in turn, befriends her cousin, Colin. The cousins have both experienced the loss of one or both parents, and they connect with their deceased parents through ghostly appearances.

Preschool Will Celebrate 25th Anniversary Dayspring To Host Noted Speakers

“Pastor Steve (Doutrich) loved trains,” recalled Dottie Klase, sharing how Kids Express Preschool (KEP), a ministry of Grace Church at Willow Valley, 300 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, got its name when it was founded almost three decades ago.

The railroad theme has been carried through the 25 years that the preschool has operated. When the school opened, it offered classes for children ages 3, 4, and 5. A Toddler Junction program was hosted on Fridays before it was replaced by a class for 2-year-olds. When Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), heard about Billy Molls from a local construction company, he knew Molls had the right qualifications to speak at Restart’s annual sportsman banquet. “(Molls) takes people on deer hunts in Alaska,� explained Santiago. “He has become a believer, and he will share how God has used his experiences.�

Restart’s fourth sportsman banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. In addition to Molls’ talk, both live and Chinese auctions will be held, and a number of door prizes will be given away.

Molls grew up in Wisconsin, fishing, trapping, and hunting with his father and grandfathers. The experiences prepared him for exploring the wilds of Alaska.

Molls attended guide school in Montana and completed a two-year apprenticeship in the Alaskan bush to become a licensed Alaskan big-game hunting guide. For the past 20 years, sportsmen from around the world have followed him through some of the most remote regions of the largest state in pursuit of a variety of native game. Molls, who is married with three daughters, continues to appreciate the rewarding time he spends with nature.

He is grateful to be able to share those experiences with others.

Santiago noted that auction and door prize items worth a total of $22,000 have been gathered for the event. Among the live auction items will be a Mathews bow, a muzzle loader, and a deer shanty. The Chinese auction will feature a TenPoint crossbow, an Elite compound bow, and a Kids Package Carbon Express Blade Pro. Door prizes will include hunting and fishing gear and the grand prize of a 10 point Nitro crossbow. Santiago explained that the items will be sold or given away throughout the event. “We will sell a (live) auction item, then (announce) a Chinese auction item (winner), and then announce a door prize,� he said.

Santiago will also give an update on the ministry, which strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions.

RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. “The purpose is to bring men out of their addiction and heal them from their trauma, so they can become productive citizens in the community,� said Santiago, who noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. Santiago noted that he plans to have a program graduate share his story at the banquet. “When you see (a graduate share his testimony), you thank God for letting you have a small part in that,� he noted.

Tickets are required for individuals to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Friday, March 1. The Junior League of Lancaster’s 14th annual Run4Luck is set for Saturday, March 16. The 4-mile run, 2-mile walk and Kids’ Fun Run will be held at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, with the Kids’ Fun Run at 9 a.m., the 4-mile run at 9:30 a.m. and the 2-mile walk at 9:40 a.m.

Top male and female finishers in the 4-mile race will be awarded prizes. Additionally, prizes will be awarded for the team with the most festive St. Patrick’s Day spirit and for the most festively dressed pooch.

Race packets will be available for pickup on Friday, March 15, at Lancaster County Day School from 3 to 7 p.m. Packets can also be picked up on race day beginning at 8 a.m. at the registration tent.

Early registration will be available for a discount through Thursday, Feb. 28, with separate fees for adults, for those participating as part of a team, and those taking part in the Kids’ Fun Run. Late registration will be available through March 15 for a higher fee.

“No one understands (losing a child) like someone who has been through it,” said Nancy Heckman, who lost her son Rob to stomach cancer more than three years ago. She, along with Dan and Phyllis Steinman, who lost their son, Andy, two years ago in an auto accident, have brought BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, to Paradise.

The new BASIS support group, which began meeting in November, is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. It meets near the church on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., and the next meeting will be held on Monday, March 4.

The organizers attended a training session in Ephrata for leaders prior to starting the group. BASIS, which is associated with Handi-Vangelism Ministries International, stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides support, resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved parents.

According to Phyllis, the meetings revolve around a discussion topics, such as the holidays or winter, but the agenda is flexible. “If someone is having an issue or a concern is brought up, the conversation will revolve around that,” she explained. “(The meetings are) very welcoming,” added Nancy, who noted that when new members arrive and need to talk about their personal experiences, the leaders can switch gears.

Phyllis stated that there is no set curriculum. “If you miss a month, you missed

Robert Ballard, founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 annual event hosted by The Manufacturers’ Association. The event will take place on Thursday, April 25, at The Pullo Center at Penn State York, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York.

Doors for the event will open at 4 p.m., with a general reception and networking time for the public beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies and remarks. Ballard’s keynote address will be followed by a brief meet-and-greet and book-signing opportunity.

Ballard discovered the RMS Titanic in 1985 and has since succeeded in locating numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown, and John F. Kennedy’s boat, the PT109. The author of numerous books, scientific papers, and articles, he has been featured in several television programs, including “Secrets of the Titanic” and a five-part miniseries, “Alien Deep With Bob Ballard.”

He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and continues to work with the Office of Naval Research. A pioneer in the development of deep-sea submersibles and remotely operated vehicle systems, he has taken part in more than 155 deep-sea expeditions.

The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club has announced that its free presentation on recent changes made to Lancaster County’s recycling collection process has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. It was originally scheduled for Feb. 20 but was postponed due to weather.

Before the Civil War, a group of fugitive slaves settled in the town of Waverly, north of Scranton. During the Civil War, despite widespread racism, 13 of these individuals went south again to fight for the Union.

Parks Department To Host Programs

Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will hold a children’s event, “It’s Tea Time,” on Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. It will take place rain or shine in the Rock Ford barn and mansion. In the event of rain, guests are asked to bring umbrellas, as they will be walking from the barn to the mansion.

A living historian portraying Katherine Hand, known by her husband, Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand, as “Kitty,” will welcome guests to the afternoon tea. Kitty was the mistress of Rock Ford Plantation and hosted many teas for family and friends.

The upcoming event will feature desserts, tea tasting, and etiquette fun such as the Language of the Fan. Guests are encouraged to wear fancy accessories such as gloves, hats, and jewelry. After the tea, guests will be led on a short tour of the Rock Ford mansion to find the hidden tea cups in the mansion’s rooms.

Another definition of “train” has also played out over the years, particularly in the last five with director Mary Liz Youtz.

Proverbs 22:6 advises, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Starting children well for a lifetime of learning and leading is important to Youtz. She noted that when she was hired, she reviewed the mission and vision of the preschool and sought to infuse the curriculum, which had been focused on meeting all the benchmarks for Keystone STARS, with biblical teachings.

“We work closely with Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg (school districts) to develop standards and prepare students for kindergarten, but it’s all taught in a faithbased framework,” Youtz said.

During the quarter-century that KEP has been open, at least 1,800 children have attended classes and activities, and 132 staff members have worked with those students.

“That’s a lot of kids we’ve ministered to,” Youtz remarked. “God’s been really faithful.”

“Having a Christian atmosphere is important to me,” commented parent Bria Kenny, whose children have attended KEP. “It helps reinforce what we’re teaching at home. My kids love coming here.”

Kenny also loves being at KEP. Her mother is Klase, who has worked at KEP from the beginning. Kenny was a student for the 1994-95 school year, and as she grew older, she returned often to assist her mother.

Kenny became an official employee at age 16, when she worked with the school’s summer camps. Now she serves as a teacher’s aide.

“I like the teachers here,” Kenny said.

“They’re loving, caring, and super great with my kids.”

“I just absolutely love it (here),” Klase added. “I love the kids, (especially) their excitement when they learn new things.”

To celebrate KEP’s 25th anniversary, Youtz has planned a family fun festival set for Friday, March 22, in the preschool wing of the church. Anyone who has been involved with KEP throughout the years may stop in anytime between 6:25 and 8:25 p.m.

Activities that evening will be free of charge and will include a bounce house, face painting, a photo booth, crafts, games, spin art, and things for teenagers to do. Classrooms will be open for tours, and librarian Sue Thomas will read a story every half-hour in the new library. Door prize drawings will be held as well. Light refreshments will be served.

“We want it to be fun and festive, celebrating 25 years of God’s faithfulness and strengthening families,” Youtz commented.

Additionally, there will be a memory wall, which Youtz hopes to fill with photos from the school’s history. She would like

Wrestlers Compete in District Championships

After placing fourth, with nine place-winners, in the sectional tournament held at Hempfield High School on February 16, Lampeter-Strasburg qualified six wrestlers to the District Three Class 3A Championships this past weekend at the Hersheypark Arena.

But only one, Tyler Phenegar, placed.

The 220-pounder, who was second at sectionals, finished in fifth place when Garden Spot’s Dustin Swanson forfeited. The top four place-winners

qualify for states with the fifth place finisher on call in case there is need for a replacement.

Phenegar, tied at 3-3 after two periods, gave up a third period takedown and suffered a 5-3 opening round loss to Exeter Township’s Robbie Unruh. He did however bounce back with three straight consolation round wins. A takedown just 48 seconds into the first period proved to be all Phenegar needed in a 2-0 final over Lucas Reed of Central York.

Harnish got off to a strong start, posting a 5-0 decision over Chase Stehman of Daniel Boone. In the quarterfinals, however, he was dealt an 8-1 setback Susquehannock Township’s Kody Evans, the eventual bronze medal winner.

Harnish came back strong, shutting out Elizabethtown’s Cameron Olson 70 before ending his season with a 6-4 overtime loss to eventual fourth place finisher, Jeff Russell of Shippensburg.

L-S jumped out to a 7-0 start against Big Spring but found the score tied at 10-10 at the end of the first.

A jumper and a trey by Patrick Holmes pushed L-S to a 15-10 advantage but the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run for their first and only lead of the night, 17-15. The determined Pioneers countered, running off 11 straight points, including a pair of treys by Chase Broderick, to push out to a 26-17 lead at the half.

L-S, showing patience against the Bulldogs’ zone defense, extended its 11-0 run with eight straight points to start the third frame. A three-ball by Beers and Broderick sandwiched a pair of free throws by Adam Stoltzfus for a commanding 34-17 lead. Broderick dropped in two more threes and Zach Kingsley added another as the hosts took control, 45-24 after three.

“I thought we stepped up in the second quarter and made a nice run in the third,” said head coach Ed Berryman.

And while the final eight minutes favored the visitors, 13-5, it wasn’t enough to offset Lampeter’s commanding lead. Big Spring missed 20 two-point attempts on the night and leading scorer Matthew Ward was held scoreless.

“Ward, a freshman, hit 63 threepointers coming in,” noted Berryman.

“Chase did a great job defending him.

Our defense overall created the separation.”

Broderick led all scorers with 18 points on six treys and Beers hit for double figures with 10. Holmes followed with eight points and Stoltzfus and Kingsley rounded out the scorers with seven each.

The Pioneers hit 10-of-21 three point attempts and were 8-of-17 from the free throw line.

Looking to get to the semifinals, L-S faced Muhlenberg Thursday night but couldn’t match the Muhls long range shooting or speed and suffered a 60-49 defeat after batting to a 36-36 tie after three quarters.

L-S looked to take control early, scoring 10 straight points including a pair of threes by Beers. But the Muhls, with more than 200 three-pointers coming in, started knocking down shots, hitting back-to-back triples with

Hunter Erb (113) and Zach Shelley (285) also competed in Hershey but suffered two straight losses. Shelley suffered an opening round fall to eventual second place winner Raymond Christas, of Dallastown and was pinned in the consolations by Osvaldo Alvarez of Carlisle.

For their individual efforts this year, nine Pioneers were recognized as Section Two all-stars. Bliss, Bradey Cunningham (145) and Johnny Franklin (195), who was sixth at sectionals, were first team selections while Harnish, Davidson and Shelley received second team votes. Honorable mention all-stars included Erb, Connor Penry, a fifth place sectional winner, and Phenegar.

“They banked in a three in the third quarter that hurt and we missed some free throws that we normally make,” stated Fink. “Every missed opportunity is big in these close games.”

“Coming into this year I wanted us to achieve a winning record and qualify for districts,” said Fink. “We won 17 games after losing three quality players from last year and Zameroski was out for almost half the season (concussion). We achieved a lot,” he added.

“I’m not happy that it ended this way but we have to look at the big picture.

We defended our back-to-back section titles almost to the wire and qualified for leagues and districts. And we were No. 1 in the district for a short time,” he continued. “We had some good wins, including winning the Hershey Christmas Tournament for the third year in a row. Saying goodbye to our seniors (Emma Gochnauer, Hayley Phenegar and Brittney Zameroski) is very hard.”

“This really resonates with me as a parent,” Ditzler commented. He stressed that the ghosts that appear in the form of a Greek chorus are spiritual, not scary. “They are not here to frighten; they’re here to

reach out and move you forward. (They encourage Mary and Colin to) go to the garden (and) remember the beautiful things.”

The ghosts are also key for changing the set, which was designed and built by Scott Cantrell to accommodate 18 different locations. “We choreographed the scene changes. It’s more marching band, rather than dancing,” Ditzler said. “A lot of them are band kids. The only difference is they (don’t) roll step (in the musical).”

There is minimal dancing in “The Secret Garden,” but what dancing there is helps to set the mood in several scenes.

“We have three prima dancers that we wanted to incorporate into a show that doesn’t have much dancing, so we’re using them in India during the cholera outbreak and for summoning the spirits for Colin and his healing in the garden,” said Jo Carole Dodson, who is the choreographer. Student teacher Melody Saul has filled in as rehearsal pianist. “The vocals give me chills, and the orchestrations for this are so beautiful,” Ditzler observed. “Part of what draws us to musicals like ‘The Secret Garden’ … is a unique voice and style. This show stands alone. There are so many highlight moments that cause goosebumps.”

Audiences are invited to attend performances of “The Secret Garden” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 7, 8, and 9, as well as at 2 p.m. on March 9 in the high school’s Performing Arts Center, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Tickets may be purchased at the high school office or at the door an hour before each performance.

Folks with auditory or visual sensitivities should be aware that a thunderstorm will be portrayed during the performances.
