InJanuary, Chicken Soup for the Soul published its latest issue, titled “Lessons Learned From My Dog.” The book compiles many true stories centered around people’s pets and how animal companions have affected the owners’ lives. One of the featured stories, which is titled “War Dog,” was written by James Hugh Comey of Willow Street.
In his story, Comey tells the tale of a dog his family adopted many years ago. The dog had accompanied its previous owner on a deployment overseas during the Korean War. When the previous owner moved into an apartment with his wife and child, he was forced to put the dog up for adoption. After being adopted by Comey’s family, the faithful dog ran away and located its former owner in an effort to be reunited with him. Like many of the stories featured by Chicken Soup for the Soul, “War Dog” explores themes of loyalty, courage and love.
Comey was first inspired to share his story with Chicken Soup for the
Soul after he saw that a story written by a former co-worker was featured in the series. Chicken Soup for the Soul accepts anyone’s submissions and only requests that the stories are fewer than 1,200 words, have a positive message and are rooted in truth. Comey reworked “War Dog,” which had been posted to his blog, and submitted it to be considered. A couple months ago, the organization contacted Comey about publishing his story.
Comey, a native of Delaware County, moved to Lancaster last year to live at Willow Valley Communities. Comey is a retired educator and has worked as a freelance writer for many years. “I’m a motorcycle rider. I used to come out (to Lancaster) with other riders,” Comey said. “I started thinking about 55-plus communities and decided to move out here.”
Comey has written two novels. In 2020, he published “The Wild World,” a post-apocalyptic fiction novel that takes place in southeast Pennsylvania. In 2011, Comey published “Uncommon Glory,” a
coming-of-age story set in suburban Philadelphia. In “Uncommon Glory,” Comey tells the tale of a boy who awakens after being beaten unconscious and realizes that he can now converse with the crucifix of Christ. The book employs magical realism and explores themes of youth, loneliness and hope.
In addition to teaching and writing novels, Comey helped found a children’s theater company in 1989. The company, called Stages of Imagination, created productions for kids that covered important topics such as bullying and loss. Stages of Imagination offered plays for over 20 years, and more than 100,000 children attended the shows until the company went on hiatus. “We didn’t have any money, actors, costumes or a theater at first, but we had a desire to get original plays out there for kids,” Comey said. takeout, others take as much joy in preparing food as they do when eating it. Brett Geesey of Ronks views cooking as not only a means to create a delicious meal, but also a way to experience new things, connect with others and bond with his family.
Ten months ago, Brett created a Facebook group titled “parents teaching their children how to cook.” Brett has worked as a chef and in kitchens for 15 years and was inspired to create the group after he began cooking with his 3-year-old son, Jameson. “It started off as me inviting him to cook with me and try new foods,” Brett said. “He cracked his first egg at 3 and a half years old; since then, he was hooked.” Jameson, who is now 4 years old, won’t start attending school until the fall, when he will become a student in the Solanco School District. But the young chef has already dredged cod fish and chicken, cooked lo mein and prepared breakfast frittata alongside other items on an impressive culinary resume.
Brett explained that by teaching his son to cook at a young age,

Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will open its annual Garden Show on Sunday, Feb. 26. The free show will run until Thursday, March 23, and may be viewed during LCAA’s regular hours: Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
The Garden Show will feature artwork from LCAA members that spans several mediums and revolves around a springtime theme. In the past, artists have created sculptures, drawings and paintings that depict anything
from flora to gardening tools. “It’s not all just flowers; some pieces are of gardening tools and things like that,” said Patricia Keller of LCAA. “I’m always amazed at the variety of the subjects people choose and the artists’ creativity.”
Whether it’s a watercolor painting of a watering can or a wire sculpture of flowers, LCAA members use the Garden Show as an opportunity to usher in the warmer weather and look forward to spring. As winter draws to a close, artists who participate in the show remind us of what is just around the corner.

he is fostering a desire for him to try new things. “We want to steer away from him saying ‘I just want chicken nuggets’ and instead encourage more of ‘Let’s go into the kitchen and cook,’” Brett said. Even when they prepare
something that isn’t entirely healthy such as fried catfish, Brett and Jameson still prefer cooking to buying fast food.
Since Brett started the Facebook group, families around the world have joined the Geesey family on
their culinary adventures.
Brett’s page now has over 1,000 followers, including chefs from Australia, Germany, New Zealand and parts of Asia. “I didn’t realize how fast it would blow up,” Brett said. “It’s not just about food; it’s about family bonding too. It’s about getting in the kitchen together and having fun.” While Brett and Jameson collaborate on the meals, Brett’s wife, Katie, handles the baking.
Inn in Ronks and has explored many areas of the culinary arts throughout his career. For two years, Brett lived on the coast of Maryland so that he could learn to prepare fresh fish. He experimented with different ways to cook seafood and learned how to fillet fish before moving back home to Lancaster.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
Brett and other members of the Facebook group post cooking videos, share kitchen tips and exchange recipes. “They’re learning a lot and posting their own videos too,” Brett said. “It’s amazing to see how many people are enjoying time with their children and cooking good food.”
Brett currently works as a cook at the Fulton Steamboat
The Geesey family views cooking not only as a necessity, but also as a way to make family memories. Brett said that he remembers how his grandmother used to cook amazing food, and beyond the memories made alongside the meals, one of the most important aspects of cooking is helping others and experiencing new things together.

If the winter blues have you feeling low, head out for a fun night guaranteed to raise your spirits. Iron-Leg Corp. will host a Back to the ’70s and ’80s Dance Party on Saturday, March 11. The event will be held at Club Twenty3, 1703 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Come out, dust off your platform shoes and help support a great cause,” said Sean Laukhuff, vice president of Iron-Leg. “Come enjoy the night with friends and dancing and just let loose.”
The festivities will feature ’70s and ’80s music from a DJ, a photo booth, a signature IronLeg drink and a silent auction. “We’ll have lots of sports memorabilia, memorabilia from the ’70s and ’80s and really something for everyone at the auction,” Laukhuff commented.
People are encouraged to come in their best ’70s and ’80s costumes, and a costume contest will be held. “We’ll award prizes for the best male, best female and best couple,” Laukhuff noted.
Proceeds from the party will benefit Iron-Leg Corp., a Lancaster-based nonprofit organization that raises funds for children in need of prosthetics. The organization was started by Matt Millhouse and Laukhuff, who were looking for a way to give back to the community when they realized they could raise funds for a cause close to home. Millhouse’s son, Parker, was born without a right leg, so Millhouse and Laukhuff created Iron-Leg in 2020, named in Parker’s honor. The organization has a mission of not only paying for high-end prosthetics for children and youths age 18 and younger, but also making sure recipients receive therapy to learn how to use them. IronLeg has helped children in Lan-
caster and York counties, raising thousands of dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.
Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.
Laukhuff noted that Iron-Leg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a heart for community
and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.
In the meantime, he hopes to draw a good crowd to the dance party, adding, “It’s winter, and we’ve all been cooped up inside. Get out of the house and come to a party.”
The dance party is for people age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased for a discount by using a QR code found on IronLeg’s Facebook page. Tickets will also be available the door. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.

The Pioneer sports teams were full steam ahead over the last week competing in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs. Unfortunately, all fell short in their quest for the gold.
The bowling team competed at Rocky Springs on Wednesday, February 8 and were ousted in the opening round by eventual champ Elizabethtown. The Section Three champs were consistent, bowling two games at 776 but the Bears, who finished second in Section Two were stronger. They rolled a 954 in the first game and a 921 to advance.
“We, as well as many other teams, struggled with the pattern that was put down for the match,” said head coach John Achille. “We just couldn’t get anything going, and we weren’t consistent making spares.
“Katie Pope was solid, with games of 203 and 185,” he continued, “well above her average for the season.”
Pope led with a 388 series. Ethan Snyder (314), Maddux
Harsh (290), Peter Mecouch (284), and Nick Bukowski (276) also contributed.
The girls’ basketball team got their post-season rolling with a Saturday, February 11 trip to Manheim Central to take on the undefeated Section Two champs. L-S battled the Barons just one week earlier and suffered a 40-17 defeat in Lampeter. That game started with Manheim going on a 13-0 first quarter blitz.
This time around it was a tight 9-6 first quarter but the Barons picked up the scoring after that, posting double figures in each of the next three quarters while holding L-S to single digits in a lopsided 56-22 final.
Maddie Knier, who is closing in on Manheim’s all-time scoring record, played all but 85 seconds and racked up 28 points, including 13 in the second quarter when the hosts built a 26-12 lead by halftime.
“What can you say,” said head coach Steve Villbrandt. “Maddie Knier is a Division One athlete in not one, but three sports. She’s the real
deal. And we’ve been struggling at the offensive end.”
With Katie Ranck saddled with foul trouble, Leigh Saurbaugh tried to pick up the scoring slack and finished with a team-high 12 points. She was Lampeter’s only double-figure scorer.
The Pioneers were coming off a 42-32 victory over Cocalico that snapped a five-game losing streak and ended the regular season.
“We needed that win,” said Villbrandt. “It was a confidence booster.”
The Pioneers got off to a strong start in this one, dropping three first quarter treys, two by Anna Horner who finished with three and a gamehigh 15 points, en route to a 14-4 advantage after eight minutes. That proved to be the difference as the score over the final three quarters resulted in a 28-28 tie.
Ranck finished with 13 points, seven coming in the fourth quarter, and went 3-for-3 at the stripe. Saurbaugh followed with eight.
The Pioneer swimmers traveled to the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium in West Lawn for their Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships. The two-day tournament got underway Friday, February 10 and saw the girls’ team finish in sixth place while the boys were 11th.
“We had a fantastic two days of competition,” praised head coach Kylie Hearn. “This was the best showing I’ve ever had, in regards to personal times and swims. The League is very competitive,” she continued. “We had 16 swimmers qualify and two school records
were close to being broken, which only fires up the swimmers even more for districts (March 3-4).”
Making a trip to the medal stand was Zara Paisley, not only once, but three times. The junior posted a season best 25.14 in the 50 free and finished in fourth place on Friday and then clocked a season best 54.85 on Saturday, taking third in the 100 free. She also anchored the 400 free relay team with Ashley Prouse, Madelyn Juba and Kylie Gerhardt combining for a fifth place finish.
“Their 3:49.50 is a personal record and 2.5 seconds off a school record,” noted Hearn.
Other top eight medal winners included Gerhardt who claimed eighth place with a PR in the 200 IM on Friday and came back to take sixth in the 100 back with a five second drop in time and the boys’ 200 medley relay. The team of Ryan Smecker, Kyle Spaulding, Matthew Rota and Christian Rota settled for sixth place with a season best 1:48.83.
The opening round of the L-L League boys’ basketball playoffs proved to be an evenly matched affair. Warwick, the Section Two runner-up, made the trip to Lampeter last Monday, February 13 to take on the defending L-L champs and, in a wildly entertaining finish, pulled out a 52-50 thriller.
“I thought we played pretty well overall,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “We just fell a little short. I still can’t believe that last shot didn’t fall.”
Warwick’s Caleb Johnson made one of two free throws
with 1:00 left to play and putting Warwick in front 52-50. L-S missed, then fouled. Warwick had a chance to extend the lead with 17.7 showing and a one-and-one opportunity. The shot rolled off the rim, giving L-S another chance. Dean Herr got off a three-point attempt that was blocked by Carter Horst. Horst saved the ball from going out of bounds but L-S intercepted and missed a short jumper that seemed to slowly roll around the rim before falling out and denying L-S an opportunity to advance.
“Our team stats were pretty even,” noted Berryman. “We were both scoring 57 ppg and giving up 48. It didn’t help that Luke Hines was in foul trouble, but I thought everyone stepped up. The boys play as a team, and I was proud of their effort.”
In pretty typical L-S fashion, Justin Glick knocked down a three-ball to kick off the home team side of the scoring. L-S led 13-7 when Herr nailed a trey with .8 on the first quarter clock.
Herr canned a second trey that pushed the lead to 18-9 before Warwick rallied with eight straight points, cutting the lead to one, 18-17. A layup by Yasin Abdi made it 20-17 but Hines was whistled for his third foul and Warwick, controlling the boards, scored four straight and took a 21-20 lead to the locker room.
Hines started the third quarter but less than two minutes in drew a charge for
his fourth foul. Warwick took advantage and put together a 7-0 run and a 28-20 lead before a pair of free throws by Abdi and a triple by Herr cut the lead to three. Glick and Chase Smucker, who finished with ten points each, scored Lampeter’s last nine points of the frame, closing the gap to 35-34.
The fourth quarter proved to be a tug-of-war. Trent Wagner came off the bench and hit a jumper that put L-S in front, briefly. Both teams traded threes, and jumpers and free throws as the lead changed six times over the course of the quarter.
Wagner came up big late in the quarter, scoring seven straight for L-S to keep them in front 50-49. Those points, however, were the last scored by the Pioneers.
“We had a lot of big plays by different players,” said Berryman. “Trent scored all nine of his points, and nine of our 16 in the fourth, and Tim Holmes took a couple of charges at key times. And Yasin had eight of his six in the first half.
“Warwick did control the boards,” he continued, “probably by plus ten. There was absolutely a lot of contact in the paint, but we have to adjust.
“Playing in a L-L playoff game was a new experience for this group. Ben was our most experienced player and he’s out injured. So, we’ll learn from this experience and prepare for districts.”
Glick and Smucker each scored ten points.
The Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, will host an Irishinspired show in March and April.
The spring exhibit will feature printmaking from Lancaster County illustrator, graphic designer and curator Ned Bustard. His two new books are “Saint Patrick the Forgiver,” a children’s book published Feb. 21, and “33: Reflections on the Gospel of Saint John,” a book of Irish poetry with art inspired by the well-known “Book of Kells,” a manuscript Gospel book in Latin.
On First Friday, March 3, a book release party for “Saint Patrick the Forgiver” will be
held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery. The story highlights Patrick, a bishop of Ireland who was not actually Irish. Combining Patrick’s words from his Confessions with a few of the legends about him, the retelling teaches families about the life of the real saint and helps them discover a story of love and forgiveness along the way.
The Row House will host a lecture on St. Patrick at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Graham Dennis will share a tale that challenges many assumptions about Patrick. Tickets may be purchased at a discounted price in advance or full price at the door. Row House members plus one guest will be admitted for free. For tickets and more details, visit
www.therowhouse.org.
In May, the gallery will welcome select student artists from Messiah University, and the summer show will focus on the art of Sandra Bowden, a pioneer in the art and faith movement of the past several decades.
Square Halo Gallery is a space for contemporary art inspired by the Christian faith. Part of the Lancaster City Art Galleries & Museums, the gallery changes its exhibits every other month. The gallery is open from 6 to 9 p.m. on First Fridays, by appointment and during events at The Trust. To learn more, visit www.squarehalobooks.com or search for @squarehalogallery on Instagram.
