In2021, local civic engagement group Mitzvah Moms launched a new branch of the organization called Mitzvah Kids. The program, which meets once a month in Strasburg, seeks to equip children between the ages of 5 and 11 to impact their community in a positive way.

As a part of the program, each child is offered opportunities to take on leadership roles, discuss important issues and become involved with different service organizations in the area. The parents of the Mitzvah Kids members help to pick service work projects, which are then spearheaded by the kids. Every time the group meets, a different member shares a project

that he or she has been working on to address a specific issue in the community. For a previous project, kids discussed Church World Service and the variety of challenges that refugees around the world face.

For the latest meeting, Nichole Madonna and her kids worked on a project to shed light on the many struggles faced by families with an incarcerated family member. Madonna first got the idea for the project when she attended a performance at the Ware Center with her family and witnessed a demonstration from Ambassadors for Hope. The mission of Ambassadors of Hope is to support children with incarcerated parents in Lancaster.

“We talked with the founder, and I feel in love with the idea of supporting them,” said Madonna. During the

Mitzvah Kids’ meeting in January, the children worked on a craft using watercolors and tissue paper to create a tie-dye effect. The paintings were then auctioned off on Facebook so that those purchasing them could give the crafts as gifts for Valentine’s Day while supporting Ambassadors for Hope.

After making the crafts, the group read and discussed a few books to learn about the lives of those who have an incarcerated parent. “It opened up a lot of discussion about the prison system in America,” said Madonna. “I was blown away by how much they discussed and how much they already knew. The kids asked so many questions.” The group also discussed how Ambassadors for Hope helps families and what the funds raised

In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board

sale, buyers can bid on any item being offered, with bids tracked using the bidder number. Once buyers are finished bidding on items, they can return to the tent and pay for their purchases.

A wide selection of goods will be sold, including household goods, crafts, quilts, new and used tools, farm equipment, lawn furniture, sporting goods, and sheds. “We’ve got everything,” said Scott Smith, a firefighter at Strasburg Fire Company. “If you name it, we probably have it.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

This event will mark the 48th year that the fire company has hosted its spring consignment sale, and the sale serves as the fire company’s largest fundraiser. The firefighters also coordinate smaller fundraisers in addition to the spring sale, such as breakfasts and chicken barbecues. The money raised from these fundraisers goes into the fire company’s primary fund, which is used to pay its electricity bill, internet and cable expenses, equipment and repair costs, personnel equipment and general maintenance costs for the fire hall. Occasionally, Strasburg Fire Company will have a fundraiser that is designated to fund a specific piece of equipment, such as its new firetruck that is scheduled to arrive this summer.

This is Smith’s eighth year as a volunteer firefighter with Strasburg Fire Company. During the day, Smith works in the flooring industry, but firefighting is something that he has always wanted to do. Smith comes from a long line of those who have served as either firefighters or members of the military. “There are plenty of instances where you can find it rewarding, but you always have that soft spot for situations. You’re there to do a job, but your heart goes out to the people that just lost everything,” Smith said. “It’s important to have people to respond to these things. It’s not in everyone to do so.”

market standholders offer free goods that will expire before the next market day.

After Market is open to the public and operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Shoppers are asked to browse the tables in a single-file line and take only three to five items at first. Shoppers may return to the end of the line as often as they wish. After Market shoppers should bring their own bags, as none will be provided.

Before the pandemic, the Central Market Trust part-

nered with local nonprofits to pick up food donations directly from the market house. Due to staff constraints and varying donation amounts, Trust staff members sought other ways to reduce waste and bridge the gap to ensure that food flowing into the Central Market makes it onto kitchen tables.

The family of Peck helped launch After Market in her memory after she passed away suddenly in 2022. Mike Peck, Kathy’s husband, noted that his family has bought much of its food from Central Market.

wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Souders-

burg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then

called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5,

which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.

Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective

best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships,

Finish Line

resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.

Great for Home Projects

GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.

Girls on the Run promotes confidence, social skills and self-awareness. Over the years, Girls on the Run has seen its popularity grow in Lancaster County.

Local 4-H Clubs have donated theme baskets for sale, with themes such as Gifts of Service, Horse Care, Winter Warmth and Reading, and Chocolate Lovers. Numerous other items and gift certificates for local services and merchandise will be sold throughout the day.

Also among the items up for bids will a bench made from plastic collected by the Red Rose 4-H Beef Club and recycled through the NexTrex Recycling Program. At the Beef Club’s first meeting of the club year, group president Caleb Miller and treasurer Cohen Miller challenged the 50 members to contact local businesses and ask them to recycle their plastic. Over the course of the club year, members col-

lected 3,000 pounds of plastic, resulting in the donation of one bench each to the Elizabethtown Fair, Solanco Fair, Lampeter Fair, Manheim Farm Show, Farm and Home Center, and 4-H benefit auction.

All American Auction Company will provide volunteer auctioneers for the event. Food items will be sold throughout the day by Rough Riders 4-H Horse Club members.

All proceeds of the auction will benefit the Lancaster County 4-H Program.

Bowlers Earn Ninth Shutout in Season Finale

In their last regular season match of the year on Monday, February 6, the Pioneers swept Lancaster Mennonite with their ninth shutout and capped a 69-15 section leading record.

Katie Pope rose to the top of the scoring ladder with a 611 series that included a 237 third game. Nick Bukowski opened with a 259 and finished at 599. He was followed by Ethan Snyder’s 595. Other contributors included Maddux Harsh (194), Scott Armstrong (186), Jack Ross (139), Ethan Weaver (155), Andrew Commero (124) and Adam Miller (131).

“Katie had a strong finish and Nick had a great first game,” said head coach John Achille. “All the varsity players were able to bowl at least one game.”

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The girls’ basketball team locked up second place in Section Three, thus qualifying for the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, but has hit a rough patch as the regular season winds down. Over the last week, the Pioneers suffered a 53-22 loss at Ephrata on Thursday, Feb. 2 before hosting Section Two leader Manheim Central on Saturday. That game went to the Barons 40-17 and was Lampeter’s fourth straight loss.

“The goal was to get to the dance,” said head coach Steve Villbrandt. “We did that, qualifying for both leagues and districts, but now we have to flip our mindset. We’re struggling right now with our confidence.”

The Mounts opened with a 17-7 run through the first quarter and never looked back. They led 25-11 at the break and held L-S to two third quarter points, a field goal by Katie Ranck, while pulling away with 15. L-S had its biggest scoring quarter in the fourth, finishing with nine, but it wasn’t enough.

Ranck finished with eight points and Ava Leonard followed with six. Leigha Saurbaugh and Kelsey McTaggart combined for eight.

“We’re really melting down at the offensive end,” said Villbrandt. “We shot 21% and at one point, we had 11 straight turnovers. But I will say this, the girls work hard and play to the end, diving for loose balls with just seconds left in the game. They don’t give up.”

The struggles continued on Saturday when the Barons came to town. Central, or more specifically Maddie Knier, handled the Pioneers. Knier netted 11 of her team’s 13 first quarter points and held the hosts scoreless over the first eight minutes.

“Take away that first quarter and it’s a ten-point game over the final three quarters, 27-17,” noted Villbrandt.

Manheim led 23-5 at the half and both teams played even in the third. The Barons pulled away with a 9-4 fourth quarter and went 17-for-20 from the free throw line for the game. Knier scored a tad over half of her team’s points with 21. Horner, with a pair of threes, scored eight for the home team.

Unfortunately, the girls suffered their fifth straight loss

Tuesday, a 51-39 final against visiting N. Lebanon. The Pioneers held a seven point lead at the half before the Vikings closed with an 18-2 run. Horner (16 points) and Ranck (14 points) paced the scoring.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

With wins over Octorara and N. Lebanon over the last week, the boys’ basketball team continues to take care of business. A win over Cocalico will clinch the section title outright.

“The guys are working hard and working together,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “And someone always steps up when we need it.”

The boys dropped their first meeting with Octorara on Jan. 10, 56-45. It was also the game Ben Wert suffered a season-ending injury. Feb. 3 the Pioneers survived a back-and-forth battle, erasing a 48-44 third quarter deficit with a convincing 15-4 fourth quarter.

“We had a different game plan this time,” said Berryman. “We used a different defense to help stop Zack Kirk and Elijah Hamilton, their top scorers. We held them to eight less than they normally score.”

LS came out strong, winning the first quarter 23-12 before Octorara fought back, closing the lead to 34-28 at the break. They looked to take control with a 20-10 third quarter only to see the hosts fight back for the win.

“We were down 52-50 and Trent Wagner grabbed an offensive board, took one dribble, and scored to tie the game. That was a big two points. He also played great defense on Kirk.”

The Braves did not score after that.

Chase Smucker went 8-for-8 at the foul line and knocked down a gamehigh 20 points. Luke Hines (9 rebounds), who was 6-for-8 from the stripe in the third and 9for-13 overall, settled for 17 while Yasin Abdi notched a career-high 10.

The Pioneers were a solid 23-for-27 at the stripe with Dean Herr (8 points) and Justin Glick (4 points), along with Abdi,

going 2-for-2.

At N. Lebanon last Monday, four players finished in double figures for just the second time this season and L-S broke open a 23-15 halftime lead with a 22-8 third quarter to post a 58-35 win over the Vikings.

“It’s a long haul up there,” said Berryman. “Finally in the third quarter we just started making shots.”

Herr canned three triples, Hines went 3-4 from the stripe, and Smucker, all finished with 13 points with Glick adding an even dozen.

SWIMMING

The Pioneer swimmers wrapped up their regular season against a tough Ephrata squad. The boys lost 114-42 while the girls’ result was similar, a 119-48 loss to the undefeated Mountaineers.

“We focused on preparing for the L-L League Championships,” said head coach Kylie Hearn. “We continued to have personal and season best times despite the team losses.”

Kyle Spaulding was the only Pioneer swimmer to claim first place. He was tops in the 200 IM with a 2:16.24. L-S did manage a handful of seconds with Christian Rota placing in the 100 back and 50 free, Matt Rota in the 100 breaststroke and Ryan Smecker in the 200 free. Third place winners included Adam Zook in the 100 free and Karim Kurdi in the 500 free.

Second place point-getters for the girls included Zara Paisley in the 50 free and Ashley Prouse in the 100 free while Krista Lambert (100 free), Grace Schonour (100 back) and Kylie Gerhardt (200 IM) placed third in their respective events.

WRESTLING

Fifteen teams converged at Cedar Crest High School for the Falcon Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Pioneer matmen came away with five medals and an 8th place team finish.

Riley Bonholtzer (121) advanced to the finals with a pair of falls but came away with a silver medal, suffering a 2:56 fall to Palmyra’s Nathaniel Foltz.

At 145, Josh Heisey settled for third place with his 3-1

decision over McCaskey’s Jessiah Jimenez. He advanced with a pair of major decision shutouts against an 8-4 loss.

Jaiden Newton finished fourth at 172. He dropped a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker thriller against Abington’s Dylan Kiesling for the chance for bronze.

Also placing for the Pioneers was Connor Erb (5th at 127) and Elijah Myers (6th at 114). Erb won his final bout

of the day via a 10-2 major over Mechanicsburg’s Cole Sweitzer.

In Millersville Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Pioneers won three actual bouts wrestled and came away with a 42-23 victory in a match that featured forfeits in seven weight classes. Erb recorded a fall at 126, Heisey earned a 9-3 decision at 145 and Spahr picked up a 6-1 decision at heavyweight to cap the scoring.

Coffee with Strasburg Borough Police

“Our main goal is to help people to understand the purpose that they have creativity for,” said Jan Brenneman, who founded ARK in 2021 with his wife, Arnolda. “We’ve been artists and had a heart for them all of our lives. We want to help people on their journey with art.”

Jan grew up in Mountville and began taking painting classes at 9 years old. As a high schooler, Jan took commercial art classes though Lancaster County Career & Technology Center while he was enrolled at Hempfield High School. Jan went on to attend Roberts

Wesleyan University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art and met Arnolda.

Jan and Arnolda had three goals in mind when starting ARK: to empower artists with resources to develop their skills, to impact the community in a positive way and to offer familyfriendly events through the arts. As a faith-based organization,

ARK also ordains those who feel called as ministers in the arts. “We want to totally empower people by teaching them art skills, but also by offering resources for people to develop their life skills. We want to focus on the whole person,” said Jan.

ARK hopes to branch out beyond visual art and incorporate elements of music, performing arts and literary arts in its programs. The organization also coordinates field trips for participants. ARK’s programs

and classes are open to anyone; the organization does have a membership agreement, but there is no cost to sign up.

Jan will begin a series of classes on watercolor painting on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 1:30 p.m. Jan will host two additional sessions on Tuesdays, March 7 and 14, at the same time. To register for classes or to view ARK’s calendar of events, search for “The ARK Community Arts Association” on www.facebook.com.
