The Strasburg Senior Citizens will hold their upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Garden Spot FFA Members See Farm Show Success The Garden Spot FFA Chapter started 2019 with hard work, awards and recognition, memories, and plans for the future. The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School students had been preparing for the Pennsylvania Farm Show since the beginning of the school year, and their efforts paid off during the annual event.

Visitors to the Farm Show in January were treated to the sight of a restored 1940 John Deere B tractor that had been donated to the school in wellused condition. FFA members spent more than 300 hours working to disassemble, repair, paint, and reassemble the tractor. Sophomore Bryce Johnson and freshman Owen Risser served as the restoration committee co-chairs and worked with community members to oversee the project. Other committee members included freshmen Liam Feister,

the Rehoboth Welsh Choir and the bagpiping competition sanctioned by the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association have been moved to larger spaces with more seating.

“The organizers were shocked that people came to watch (the bagpipers),” Pujols said, explaining that piping competitions tend to be attended primarily by the musicians, but the interest of spectators was a welcome surprise.

In addition to piping, competitions will include Irish music, Irish dancing, Irish baking, and Celtic art. Pujols said that as of Jan. 30, almost 700 dancers have entered, and more are expected to register by the deadline of Saturday, Feb. 9. The feis is governed and sanctioned by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission), the North American Feis Commission, and the Mid-Atlantic Region. “ We offer every level (of dance),” Pujols said. She noted

that competitors range in age from single digits to 60s. “(Some of these dancers) are the caliber that are being scouted for Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

People don’t realize there are these super-talented kids (and young adults) right under their noses,” she added.

Admission to the festival will be free of charge, thanks to sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Thanks to an anonymous donor, $600 will be divided among the winners of the youth division of the Irish music competition.

“The money will be paid directly to music teachers so these kids can continue their lessons,” Pujols said. She praised the quality of the musicians that participated last year, relating that the festival is part of the circuit that gets instrumentalists and vocalists ready for the competition that leads up to All-Ireland. For AllIreland the best Irish musicians from all over the world converge

on a town in Ireland to compete for the highest honor in Irish music. “I’m not as familiar with the music scene, so this has been exciting for me to learn about it,” Pujols said.

Professional musicians will perform throughout the festival and will include The Celtic Martins, Down By the Glenside, Charlie Zahm and Tad Marks, Fire in the Glen, Across the Pond, and Seasons. Dublin 5, a high-energy Celtic rock band from Annapolis, Md., and Lancaster’s own Ogham Stones will perform on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Marriott. Their performance is the only part of the festival that will require tickets.

The festival will also offer instrument and Irish Gaelic workshops, traditional cuisine, vendors of all things Celtic, and more.

Pujols was pleased with the community response, noting that as a result of the high turnout, improvements have been made to the layout for this year’s festival, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 15; Saturday, Feb. 16; and Sunday, Feb. 17, in downtown Lancaster city. Much of the event will take place at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott, but Tellus360, Annie Bailey’s Public House, and The Meduseld Meadery will also host festival components.

“We outgrew the Marriott,” Pujols said. “We want to move in the direction of (even) more venues next year, similar to Lancaster Roots and Blues. We’re assuming people will get out and about. People on social media seem excited about getting to the other venues (that we have announced).”

The Winter Bookfest will take place snow or shine. The event is free and open to the public; no

registration is required. Parking is available at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.

Winter Bookfest is one of more than 40 Lancaster Roots 2019 events. Lancaster Roots combines the events of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and the 1719 Herr House & Museum. Through public presentations, food, music, field trips, and classes, these events aim to reveal Lancaster and its people: their stories, culture, and history.

A variety of books will be available for purchase during the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society’s Winter Bookfest, set for Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 14 to 16.

On Jan. 7, chapter members attended the Pennsylvania FFA Mid-Winter Convention, which was held in conjunction with the Farm Show. Attendees were encouraged by state Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and state Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera to continue sharing their stories and the story of Pennsylvania agriculture. Seniors Leah Welk, Jordan Martin, and Bella Eckert were among more than 400 students who received Keystone Degrees, the highest FFA award offered in the state. Leah and Jordan also represented the Eastern Region as Star Keystone Degree candidates. Additionally, Don and Emily Welk received an Honorary Keystone Degree in recognition for having three children who earned Keystone Degrees.

Along with more than 300 first-year FFA members, freshmen Cheyenne Oberdorff, Owen Risser, and Jackson Price

received their first FFA jackets sponsored by Pennsylvania FFA Alumni. In addition, juniors Jess Herr and Danae Ranck were awarded scholarships to attend the Washington Leadership Conference this summer.

Also on Jan. 7, the Agriculture Issues Forum team competed in the state competition. The team of Bryce Johnson, Danae Ranck, sophomore Jeslyn Krebs, and juniors Tobias Leaman, Gracie Hess, and Jess Herr had developed a 15-minute presentation on international trade and its impacts on the agriculture industry that included research and personal experiences. The team placed first and will now move on to represent Pennsylvania at the national competition in October.

Other Farm Show competitors from L-S included the members of the Agriculture Science 1 class, whose window display placed 12th, and Leah Welk, who exhibited market lambs.

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free.

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free.

United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts.

VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers.

The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible.

Anchor Christian Academy, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, will host several open houses for interested families at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7; Tuesday, March 12; Monday, April 8; and Monday, May 6. The meetings will give an overview of Anchor’s vision and will highlight secondary offerings for seventh through 12th grades, tuition rates, and family commitment.

Although only in its second year of existence, Anchor Christian Academy had full classes last year. Due to its collaborative model of education, the school notes that not every student is an ideal fit for Anchor, so attendance at an open house is essential to each family’s decision.

During the school year, students attend classes with professional teachers two or three days per week and are guided by a parent at home on the remaining days. The academic calendar provides a four-week break from classes over Christmas and ends the first week in May. The model aims to prepare students to study independently and develop time management skills, which may ease their transition to college.

Enrollment for new families will start on Friday, March 1.

There are also opportunities for potential students to shadow current students during the school day.

Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, will host an early childhood and kindergarten open house on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m. Families with students entering preschool, prekindergarten, or kindergarten are encouraged to attend. LCCS provides an academic program to students in a nurturing Christian environment.

LCCS offers two kindergarten program options. The traditional elementary kindergarten students come to campus five days a week. The objective of the fullday kindergarten program is to build a solid foundation upon which students grow academically, physically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The program is designed to be academically challenging, as well as developmentally appropriate. Kindergarten classrooms at LCCS are organized and structured to support all areas of development, and a variety of materials are used to stimulate students’ curiosity, initiative, and inquiry.

LCCS offers an alternative solution for parents desiring both the gift of time with their elementary children as well as the services of a Christian school.

This additional and cost-effective program is called The University Model. The University Model was developed to preserve and strengthen the family relationship and achieve a high degree of academic excellence. The University Model kindergarten model meets two days in the central classroom (on campus) and three days in the satellite classroom (at home). University Model students are on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Early Childhood Education program at LCCS aims to instill a love for both God and learning in students. LCCS offers both preschool for 3-year-olds and prekindergarten for 4- and 5year-olds.

Children must be age 3 by Saturday, June 1, to enroll in preschool. Preschool takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:10 to 11:30 a.m.

Preschool students enrolled in the enrichment program stay until 2:45 p.m. and enjoy rest time, a snack, and additional learning activities.

Children must be age 4 by Sunday, Sept. 1, to enroll in prekindergarten.

Local resident and artist Aaron Freas is planning to hold a giveaway drawing for a hand-painted acrylic painting to benefit the Poh Fund at the Animal Medical Center in New York City (AMCNY). Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and may be purchased via links at www.livelikepoh.com.

Aaron is 20 years old and has been taking art classes at Lampeter-Strasburg High School for seven years. He completes his paintings and sculpture pieces with the help of his paraeducator, Mrs. Mylin. He created the painting for the giveaway drawing in Mr. Cantrell’s Art Survey class. Aaron enjoys painting dogs and especially loves raising money for pet-related charities.

This will be his fourth giveaway drawing for AMCNY. In total, he

Several years ago, Aaron learned about the story of Poh the dog, who was taken on a bucket list trip by his owner after Poh received a terminal diagnosis of kidney failure. Poh’s trip was highlighted on the national news with a focus on the issues concerning senior dog ownership.

After Poh’s passing, his owner set up of charitable fund to help people with the medical costs associated with keeping senior dogs healthy and in their loving homes for as long as possible.

The board of directors of Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS) elected new leadership at its December meeting. The all-volunteer nonprofit organization raises funds for beautification efforts in the city of Lancaster with its summertime hanging baskets and holiday decor in Penn Square and the lampposts.

The leadership team includes Joel Henry, president; Emanuella Parveris, vice president; Amber Strazzo, secretary; and Christopher Stetler, treasurer.

Henry is general manager of BUiLDiNG CHARACTER and

started working with LEADS in 2015 as the watering contractor taking care of the flower baskets each day. He joined the board in 2017 and was elected vice president in 2018. He is beginning his first term as president in 2019.

Originally from Baltimore, Henry and his family live in the city’s Stadium District.

Parveris is a senior buyer and head of merchandising and social media for Savemart Inc. and owned Nick’s Pizza on North Queen Street from 1998 to 2008.

Pioneers Win 19th Straight, Clinch Section Title

Lampeter-Strasburg’s boys’ basketball team defeated Lancaster Catholic on the road last Wednesday, and hung a lopsided loss on Cocalico at home on Friday to clinch the Section Three championship with a perfect 12-0 mark to date.

The top team in Section Three, L-S, and the top team in Section Four, Lancaster Catholic, met in Lancaster Wednesday night. While the temps were dropping outside, the action heated up in the gym.

The Crusaders, controlling the boards, held an 18-10 lead after eight minutes.

L-S, typically a strong three-point shooting team, missed seven treys in the second quarter while the Crusaders converted in the paint. Both teams knocked down 12 quarter points and the spread remained eight points at the break.

“We played poorly on the defensive end in that first half,” said head coach Ed Berryman. “But Catholic did a nice job. I told the guys coming in that Catholic isn’t a team, it’s a program and just because they were

missing a couple kids didn’t mean they wouldn’t be ready.”

The Pioneers zeroed in from behind the arc in the third quarter, outshot the hosts 19-7, and took a 41-37 lead after three. Seth Beers opened the frame with a triple that cut the lead to 30-25. Chase Broderick hit the first of his three triples at the midway point with the Crusaders still in front, 35-29. But with 3:30 left, L-S turned it up a notch. Zach Kingsley scored in the paint and then converted a steal by Beers into a layup. Adam Stoltzfus hit a jumper from the free throw line and Broderick drained back-to-back treys, the second with 3.8 ticks left, to put L-S in front for good, 41-37.

L-S led 46-40 with a layup and one of two free throws by Patrick Holmes (11 points, 5 assists) with just under three minutes remaining. The Crusaders outscored the visitors 7-3 down the stretch but it wasn’t enough. L-S missed three free throws in the final 37 seconds, including the front end of a pair of one-and-ones, to give the Crusaders hope.

“They were focusing on Seth and Zach stepped up,” said Berryman. “He was 6-for-7 from two-point range.

“It was good to have the pressure on us in the fourth quarter, especially at this time of year,” he added.

Kingsley led all scorers with 18 points. Broderick netted nine, all on threes, Stoltzfus finished with 6, and Seth Beers, Jarred Getchis and Nevin Book combined for 5 as the Pioneers improved to 19-1 overall.

Cocalico, the third place team in Section Three came to Lampeter Friday night and were feeling pretty good at halftime, holding a 21-18 lead after outscoring the hosts 12-6 in the second quarter.

“I’m not sure if it was senior night or what, but we certainly got out to a slow start,” Berryman said. “We certainly weren’t overly focused on defense and we talked about that at the half.”

L-S went to work in the second half, scoring 21 third quarter points and pouring in 23 more in the fourth while holding the Eagles to a combined 21 points. Beers scored 12 of his team-high 18 to spark the third quarter while Broderick nailed back-to-back threes early in the fourth to provide more separation.

“We shot 29 free throws in the second half so we were definitely more aggressive in getting to the basket,” noted Berryman. “And Adam Stoltzfus had 10 of his 12 points in the second half. He had the size advantage inside and we made a better effort to get him the ball. He’s playing with confidence now.”

The result was a convincing 62-42 section-clinching victory, Lampeter’s 19th straight this season.

Connor Mack outscored the field with 19 points. Beers finished with 18 but had a lot of supporting help.

Stoltzfus finished with 12 points while Broderick and Holmes (5 assists,

7 rebounds) each netted nine.

Kingsley (6), Jarred Getchis (4) and Nevin Book (4) also contributed.

The Pioneers, currently the top 5A team in the district, took, and made, twice as many free throws as the Eagles, going 20-for-32 at the line.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL In crossover action last Wednesday, Section Four leader Lancaster Catholic traveled to Lampeter to take on the second place Pioneers. Looking to remain unbeaten on the season, the Crusaders (20-0) jumped out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back in a 63-40 triumph. For the Pioneers, who have dropped two of their last three games, it was their most lopsided loss of the season. And again they were playing without starting point-guard Brittney Zameroski and forward Emma Drouillard (out five games).

“We were down two starters but still got the score down to four with five minutes left in the third quarter,” said head coach Tony Fink. “That felt like a win.

“We’re not too down. Two of our three losses we were shorthanded,” he added. “Solanco is pretty good and Catholic High is defending state champs. We also got a gutsy win at Township so I don’t feel too down.”

Emma Gochnauer netted six of Lampeter’s nine first quarter points but the Crusaders, who got six from Kiki Jefferson, led 17-9 after eight minutes.

Holmes sparked a 10 point second quarter but the visitors matched that, plus one, with Peyton Jaquis scoring eight, including a pair of three’s. She finished with five triples on the night and 17 points to back Jefferson’s game-high 24.

Down 28-19 at the break, L-S struggled to get on track in the second half while the Crusaders picked up the pace. Jefferson tallied ten of the team’s 15 third quarter points and six players chipped in to score 20 in the fourth.

Holmes was solid from three-point range after the break, canning three of her four but it wasn’t enough. She dropped in a team-high 16 points with Gochnauer adding 13 and Olivia Vranich chipping in with eight.

Drouillard was back in action Friday night and Gochnauer poured in a game-high 22 points but it wasn’t enough to hold off the third place team in Section Three, Cocalico (6-5, 13-7 overall).

L-S got off to a strong start, taking an 18-13 lead after eight minutes. The Eagles returned the favor, outscoring the visitors 18-13 to pull within one, 31-30, at the half. That momentum carried into the third frame as well, with the hosts taking a 43-36 lead after outscoring L-S 13-5. Neither team really got going down the stretch, scoring just single digits. L-S

won the quarter 7-6, but lost the war.

“We didn’t play well defensively in that first half,” said Fink, “and they gained confidence. Plus we allowed three open three-pointers in the third quarter and dug a hole.

“We need to clean up the defense moving forward,” he added. “Every game now is a playoff game.”

Gochnauer, who was 6-for-8 from the free throw line, scored 20 points or more for the fifth time this year.

Drouillard settled for nine points while Olivia Vranich (5), Haley Phenegar (4) and Jackie Martin (3) rounded out the scoring.

Corrie Lescoe anchored the Eagles’ attack, splashing in a gamehigh six three pointers and finishing with 19 points.

WRESTLING Lampeter’s run through the postseason continued in the District Three Team Championships last week. The Pioneers, seeded 11th, traveled to Cedar Cliff on Wednesday night and opened with a solid 39-28 win over No. 6 Daniel Boone. That, however, pushed them into the quarterfinals opposite No. 3 Cedar Cliff where they were dealt a 59-6 defeat. One day later, at Spring Grove, Lampeter’s run ended with a 54-25 loss to Gettysburg.

Parker Owens (170) started the run with a 6-2 decision and Zach Shelley (285) ended it with a tight 3-1 decision. In between, Logan Davidson (182), Johnny Franklin (195) and Tyler Phenegar (220) all secured falls, with two of them coming in the first period.

Phenegar’s 1:42 fall broke up Cedar Cliff’s nine bout run and was the only bout the Pioneers would win. But the loss was closer than the score indicates. L-S gave up four falls,

four tech falls and five decisions. But four of those decisions were by three points or less, including Owens’ 3-2 loss in overtime.

In the consolation quarterfinals the following night at Spring Grove, L-S (13-3) faced No. 7 Gettysburg (16-4) where their run through the bracket ended.

Harnish’s 2:38 fall over Ethan Dalton at 120 and an 11-0 major by Bliss over Jacob Cherry closed the scoring for the Pioneers.
