It is bee season at Martin Meylin Middle School. The 20th annual geography bee was held on Jan. 15, and the spelling bee took place on Jan. 22.

Sixth-grader Carlos Berrios beat out sixth-grader Alex Sutherland, who earned second place, and eighth-grader Peter Mecouch, who came in third place, in the final round of the geography bee. Peter won the Martin Meylin bee last year and was in the top 100 geography students in Pennsylvania based on a written exam that determined who advanced to the state bee. He missed competing in the state final by one question. The winner of the state bee advances to the National Geographic GeoBee held in Washington, D.C., in May. Co-organizer Chuck Lambert, a

Young Readers Needed For Animal Shelter Program

Farm Show on Jan. 6. The convention included remarks from Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera. Attendees also heard from representatives from Center for Professional Personnel Development at Penn State University and the Environmental Protection Agency. Sure, you probably have heard of students reading to dogs, but did you know that cats enjoy similar attention? “Our adoptable cats appreciate being read to by our Rescue Readers as reading aloud has a positive impact on the cats in our cat colonies, while also helping the readers become more comfortable and confident reading aloud,” said Humane Pennsylvania events and social media coordinator Kylie Layman, who is in charge of the Rescue Readers program. The program is less than a year old and was developed to provide youths ages 4 to 13 with opportunities to interact with the cats in the shelter, expand their reading proficiency, and give back See Rescue Readers pg 2
