Art Association Schedules Classes

As Eddie Cochran sang, “There ain’t no cure for the summertime blues,” but Patricia Keller stated that the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) has a remedy for the “winter blahs.”

The LCAA, located at 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will hold a variety of classes for both experienced and aspiring artists. There is a fee for the classes; LCAA members will receive a discount.

Participants must register, with the deadline a week before the particular class is slated to start. Anyone who does not register a week in advance but wishes to take the class can call the LCAA at 717-687-7061 to find out if there is space available. To register, go to www.lcaa online.org.

“A lot of people have always

wanted to take an art class to expand on their talents,” Keller said. “Here’s a chance to do that. A

lot of these are beginner (courses), and it really can be a good way for someone who is experienced to

Two Parties, Two Prognostications

Two adorable groundhogs. The second day of February. Two predictions. Two functions.

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation will celebrate Groundhog Day with a pair of parties.

The organization’s “chief chuck,” Elliott, will make his official prognostication during a get-together on Monday, Feb. 2, at Conestoga

House & Gardens, 1608 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.

The festivities will run from 9 to 11 a.m. It is a ticketed event, but there is no charge for admission.

Event tickets and tickets for parking are available by going to www .acornacreswr.com and clicking on the Programs/Events tab. The deadline to register is Saturday, Jan. 31, at noon.

There are only 30 tickets for

L-S Will Host Area’s Top School Musicians

Strike up the bands.

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School will host the LancasterLebanon Music Educators Association County Band South Festival on Saturday, Jan. 31. L-S will have the opportunity to showcase its venue and several of its musicians.

The high school and middle school bands will rehearse from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A concert open to the public will be held at 4 p.m. in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster. There is an admission fee. Cash, credit cards, and debit cards will be accepted at the door.

The high school band will be conducted by Chris Devona of James Madison University, and the middle school band will be conducted by Matthew Ceresini of Hempfield High School.

The middle school band will take the stage first, followed by the high school band. “Each band will play five pieces of music,” said L-S band director Larry Royer, who is serving as one of the host directors along with Brian Bartch of Lancaster County Christian School.

Royer relishes the opportunity to host the big event. “If you asked me on the day of the festival, I’d say it was great,” he joked. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it. It’s a chance to show off our school a little bit, and people will be entertained by some of the best talent in Lancaster County.”

Thirty-one musicians from the L-S School District were selected to participate in the festival.

parking available. An overflow lot will be located at the Grace Baptist Church lot entrance off Marietta Avenue. There will not be a shuttle bus.

“It’s just like a meet-andgreet,” said Betsy Shank, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director. “There will be photo ops with groundhogs, and bagels, cream cheese, and coffee will be provided.”

Elliott will make his official prognostication at 10 a.m. Two identical bowls with the same snack placed in each will be put in front of the red-brown marmot. One side will be labeled “spring” and the other “winter.” “Whatever bowl he consumes food from (first) is his prognos tication,” said Shank. It will be livestreamed on Acorn Acres’ Facebook page. Elliott’s little sister, Lilly, will also attempt to make a forecast.

“It’s two live groundhogs, and it’s a Pennsylvania tradition that is over 245 years old,” said Shank. “It’s one of those things where it’s just fun. There’s heart, there’s humor, there’s compassion.”

Acorn Acres’ Groundhog Day Party will be held later that night, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tellus 360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster. This event is also free, but tickets are required.

The gathering will be spon sored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. “There will be one featured cock tail, and for any Tito’s beverage purchased that night, a dollar will come back to Acorn Acres,” said Shank.

Guests will be able to buy food from Tellus 360, and there will be a cash bar.

There will also be a selfie station, bingo, kids’ crafts, and cornhole. The interactive game Kahoot! will test visitors’ knowledge of groundhogs.

“We’ll have merch for sale, and we’ll have our education table with our skulls and our pelts,” Shank said.

At 7 p.m., Elliott will make his prediction for the NFL championship game using the same process as he had for his prognostication that morning.

“The biggest, most important moment is Elliott doing his prognostication for the (title game),” Shank said. “I’m not telling people that they need to wager on things, but my groundhog has called the winner three years in a row.”

Elliott researches his selection during the playoffs. “He does

Mennonite Life archivist and librarian Julia Wiker will teach participants how to read Kurrentschrift, a distinct styling of the German script alphabet, as well as common abbreviations and variations in writing and spelling. The session will also offer practice interpreting 18th- and 19th-century family records from Mennonite Life’s collections. Knowledge of German is not required for this workshop.

Learning to interpret Kurrentschrift can be a valuable skill for genealogy research for anyone with ancestral roots in German-speaking countries. The text is also found in the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur, which combines the elegant script with vibrant, colorful illustrations.

There is a fee. To register, visit www.mennonitelife.org/events. In the case of inclement weather, the workshop will be postponed to Friday, Feb. 20.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

A workshop on Feb. 6 will teach attendees the basics of reading German script.

study,” Shank said. “He’s been known to watch a game or two while he’s figuring out what he’s going to do.”

Proceeds will benefit Acorn Acres. “It is a fundraiser for us, but we’re in Pennsylvania,” said Shank. “This is a big day for us, and I have two live, really, really cute groundhogs. So why would I not have them prognosticate? This is purely for fun.”

Shank said Acorn Acres is the “first and only nonresidential or commercial wildlife rehabilitation education facility in Lancaster County.”

She added, “We specialize in the rehabilitation of your common backyard prey mammals. Everything from mouse to beaver. And Virginia opossums. Virginia opossums are not con -

sidered prey animals. They’re opportunistic carnivores, but we’re the only one in the county that is openly and actively rehabilitating them because they’re so critically important to our entire environment.”

Acorn Acres also has an education room and holds several events throughout the year. “We have a lot of open houses where we bring the community into a wildlife rehabilitation facility so they can see what it is and where we do our work,” Shank said. “Nobody knows about wildlife rehabilitation until they need it, and then they have suddenly have all these questions. We open up this entire building to let people see so they understand where their dollars are going and what we’re doing.”
