n 1975, the Bill Gaither Trio with the Sunday School Picnic introduced a song that shares with youngsters the idea that they have possibility and potential because God loves them. Nearly five decades later, a new generation of youths will learn to sing and, director Katie Wieand hopes, take to heart the meaning of “I Am a Promise.” “There’s a reason we remember that song,” Wieand said. “It’s good truths and a good tune.” Wieand is the director of children’s music and online ministry at Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street and also the leader of Outpour Kids, GCC’s youth performing arts ministry. Wieand attended Belmont University along with Denver Bierman of the power funk band Denver & the Mile High Orchestra, and she has chosen to use his arrangement of “I Am a Promise” in the spring session of the Outpour Kids choral program.

“I Am a Promise” will be one of four songs that underscore the session’s theme of “You Are Created With a Promise & Purpose.” “We will be looking at (the idea that) you were made with a mission and unpacking God’s promises to us,” Wieand explained. Students in grades one through six are invited to participate in the Outpour Kids choir, which will rehearse on Thursdays, Feb. 4 to March 18, from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. and offer a final performance for family members on Friday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. The rehearsals and performance will be held at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. Due to socially distanced space on stage being limited, participation in the program is capped at 40 students, as it was in the fall. “They still were able to learn good vocal techniques,” Wieand remarked. “They definitely had to listen harder (because they were spread out) and really pay attention. They had to develop good aural skills in order to have that blended tone with other singers.” See Outpour Kids pg 8

a creative outlet during yucky days this winter, fluid art may fit the bill. Adult supervision is required for using heat guns to remove bubbles from paint. Some fluid artists on YouTube and Facebook have also combined spray paint and fire, which should only be performed with adults watching closely and fire extinguishers located nearby. “Picking the colors, maybe stirring the paint, and moving the paint around on the canvas would be something the kids could do,” Werner stated. “Depending on the age and dexterity of the kids, they could probably handle the paint themselves, but for safety and preventing a mess, an adult would be better suited to handle the paint.” Werner’s favorite resources for fluid art ideas, coaching, and support include the Facebook groups and pages Acrylic Pouring Addiction, Fluid Art Studios, and Jerry’s Artarama; tutorials by Netherlands artist Rinske Douna; and the book “Get Started in Paint Pouring” by Nicky James Burch. Ultimately, though, people just need to take the plunge. “Be patient, and don’t necessarily have expectations for what you want your final design to look like,” Werner advised. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with techniques, pouring mediums, paints, and colors. There’s a lot out there to use, and a lot to learn. You just have to find what works best for you.”

Werner discovered fluid art by attending a class at a painting party studio on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018. She and her boyfriend learned from two guest artists who demonstrated how to mix the paint and discussed various techniques. At home, Werner watched YouTube videos to learn more. “I really like the fluidity of the technique,” Werner commented. “It isn’t a style of art that requires detail and is required to look like something. I like the uniqueness and that I don’t have to really think about it once I pour the paint onto the canvas. The most challenging parts are getting the paint to be the right consistency, knowing how much paint I’ll need, and deciding what colors to use.” Pre-mixed paints can be purchased at craft stores, or artists, like Werner, can mix their own. Canvases can always be reused, but their numbers can soar if artists like the finished products. Werner began to experience that latter phenomenon, so she started looking for homes for her art. She also found another way to be creative with the paint itself. “I had so much dried leftover paint in the bottom of the containers I was using to pour over (canvases) that looked kind of neat on its own, so I decided to start making smaller things like keychains and magnets,” Werner said. McDonald, Deardorff Recognized Lancaster South Rotary Club recently selected Colin McDonald and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Deardorff as the Students of the Month for November. Both honorees are seniors at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. Benjamin Feeney, the school’s principal, presented them to the club at its virtual meeting. Students of the Month are selected on the basis of academic excellence as well as school and community service. Colin is the son of Ray and Terri McDonald of Lancaster. He has received distinguished honor roll recognition and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is the senior class president and a member of the Model United Nations. He is also involved with L-S High School Heroes, a mentoring program that teams high school seniors with third-grade students as real-life role models. Colin is also a member of
the varsity wrestling team. As a junior, Colin was named a Burrowes Scholar in social studies. He was a 2020 homecoming king candidate. In the community, Colin is involved in the youth group at Pequea Church. Next year, Colin plans to attend college to study marketing. He intends to pursue a career in politics. Lizzy is the daughter of Ben and Amy Deardorff of Lancaster. She has consistently received honor roll recognition and is the co-president of Student Council. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Pioneer Interact Club and L-S High School Heroes. Lizzy is co-captain of the girls’ soccer team, where she has been named a Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star. She also plays soccer for the PA Classics U19 Girls Academy Team and is a member of the varsity track and field team.

Celtic Festival Plans Modified Plans for the annual Rose and Shamrock Celtic Festival and Feis, slated to occur in February, have been suspended due to the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, the festival brings thousands of dancers, musicians, and fans of Celtic culture to downtown Lancaster. It is possible that the dance and music competitions can still take place in
an altered form to reduce crowding and prioritize everyone’s health and safety. All other elements of the festival, including bands, vendors, cultural presentations, and food, have been canceled for this year. Bleed Blue from pg 1 Bleed Blue Challenge. “Anytime you can inject an amount of fun … and drive up the amount of blood in storage … it’s better.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities
to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors.
LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Encouraging blood donations is “a no-brainer,” Millersville Borough PD Lt. Jeffrey Margevich commented, adding, “It saves lives. That’s the whole key.” “Donating blood is an inter-
esting way to help the community,” Pequea Township PD Chief John Michener remarked. “You never know who you might be saving. that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place for people to learn about let-

SWIMMING On an afternoon where L-S met little resistance, the Pioneer swimmers buckled down and took care of business, sweeping visiting Lancaster Catholic. The girls also won the 200 free relay led by sophomore Krista Lambert (28.41) who squeaked out a victory in the 50 free, edging Catholic’s Maxine Rann (27.76). Ashley Prouse, Sidney Brinkman and Abby Welchans rounded out the win. Other winners on the day included Horner in the 200 free, Scranton in the 500 free, Welchans in the 100 backstroke and Ellie Parido in the 100 fly. The boys’ squad was almost as
impressive, sweeping the relays and winning 10 individual events. Andrew Reidenbaugh, a junior, not only anchored the 200 medley (Nathan Eberly, Kyle Spaulding, Ryan Smecker) and the 400 free (Smecker, Eberly and Spaulding) but pulled out a close win in the 50 free, nipping Nicholas DiBattistta by .04 seconds, and dominating the 100 free. Smecker also earned two wins on the day, securing top times in the 100 back and 100 fly. “We had multiple top times, specifically those close races with Kyle in the 200 IM and Ryan in the 100 fly,” noted Turner. “Close races bring excitement and fast times which all my swimmers enjoy.” WRESTLING L-S opened Section Two action with
a disappointing 55-12 loss to Donegal, Tuesday, Jan. 12. “We had eight starters out of the lineup,” noted head coach Brad Heeter. “The guys had their hearts set on a team section title this season, but circumstances will make that goal a challenge. Anything is still possible. We need to stay focused on accomplishing individual goals and hope to stay healthy.” L-S forfeited the first six bouts of the night, quickly falling behind 36-0. An overtime decision at 106 and a tight 20 loss at 113 pushed the visitors lead to 42-0. Lampeter’s first points of the night were forfeit points at 126. Arik Harnish followed that with a fall over Taj Younger to account for the home team scoring.

Lampeter-Strasburg High School teachers recently recognized the Pioneer Superlatives and Students of the Month for November. The Pioneer Superlatives are Liana Howe and Michael Hayes, and the Students of the Month are Abby Welchans and Ricky
Gibson. Liana is a senior and the daughter of Pamela Kinsey and Thomas Howe. She is regularly on the distinguished honor roll and is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including marching band, concert band, quiz bowl, National Honor Society, High School Heroes, and track and field. Liana’s accolades include Burrowes Scholars awards at the fifth-, eighth-, and 11thgrade levels; Scholastic and Lancaster Young Artists awards; and current semifinalist status in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. She also serving a two-year term as a student representative on the Lampeter-Strasburg School Board. She plans to attend college
and is considering pursuing a career as an attorney. Michael is a junior and the son of Edward and Gabriela Hayes of Lancaster. He is a consistent honor roll student and is involved in extracurricular activities including marching band, chorus, concert band, Madrigals, stage crew, and tennis. Michael is a 2020 National Honor Society inductee, a double Martin Meylin Student of the Month award recipient, and the winner of the junior high track and field Sportsmanship Award in 2018. Outside of school, Michael participates in his church youth group and takes part in an intensive Works of Mercy service week each summer. He plans to attend college with the goal of becoming a
biomedical engineer. Abby is a sophomore and the daughter of Erik and Elizabeth Welchans of Lancaster. She is a member of the honor roll and is part of the lacrosse and swim teams as well as the spring musical, fall play, and Pioneer Interact Club. Abby is active in a local youth group and has won photography awards at the West Lampeter Community Fair. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a teacher and/or a professional photographer. Ricky is a sophomore and the son of Rick and Jeanna Gibson of Lancaster. An honor roll student, Ricky also is a member of Student Council and the track and field team. This is his second Student of the Month award.

As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. LCHS chose Marotta/ Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing space.” The renovation, which will also include a Student Commons and dining hall and a performing arts center, has its roots in the school’s strategic plan. “ We needed to modernize the facility to offer students 21st-century learning tools,” explained Hamer. “That was the priority of our student plan.” A feasibility survey of the LCHS community was part
of the research. “(We asked) what were the top priorities, and the answer was interesting,” Hamer shared. “Exactly 50% thought that building a fine and performing arts facility and auditorium and modernizing the cafeteria was a top priority,” said Hamer. “The other 50% thought that modernizing our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities was a priority.” Hamer noted that the request for STEM facilities fit well with curricular changes the school was already making. “ We are rewriting our entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer, who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. The new auditorium, which will replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace
the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish Love - Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. Students in first through eighth grades are welcome to visit the Lancaster Science Factory every Wednesday for a partial or full day of Homework Club. Professional educators will keep students on track as they complete assignments, provide extra help with challenging subjects, and facilitate STEM education activities during downtime. Both Homework Club and School @ North Museum are open to children learning virtually and are intended to help students who would benefit from a safe and enriching environment to stay focused on their schoolwork. Students will use upcycled household and common objects to solve a variety of engineering challenges.
