Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will be the site of a sub sale and a soup and bake sale on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Sertoma Club will offer ham and cheese, American, and cheese subs for a fee per sub. To place orders, call Lynda at 717-687-6408. Walk-ins will be welcome. The church will sell various soups, including chicken corn and ham and bean. Separate fees have been set for quarts and for pints of the pre-packaged soups. CAMPUS OPEN HOUSES
Lancaster Mennonite will host open house events at four of its campuses, including Lancaster, Locust Grove, New Danville, and Hershey. The events will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24. Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m. A welcome meeting will begin at 6 p.m., followed by tours and activities. 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, will present the George R. Schreck ‘47 and Barbara A. Schober ‘72 Memorial 2018-19 Concert and Lecture Series on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Main Auditorium. The concert will feature Dr. Michael T. Jamanis, violin, and Frances Veri, piano, performing works by the Viennese masters, including Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms. Admission is free. Writeface, a local nonprofit organization that offers free writing workshops to veterans, has announced its 2019 winter/spring schedule. Folks do not need to be a writer or an artist to participate. Writeface strives to provide a safe space for veterans, in the company of other veterans, to explore their inner landscape by using proven writing techniques to become reacquainted with aspects of themselves that were lost in battle. “Our goal, first and foremost, is always to create a safe environment for veterans to explore and address any difficulty they may be experiencing in their present life that may have roots in the past,” said Annie Ginder, who cofounded Writeface with Scott Hower and serves as a facilitator. “The work-
shops we offer seem to naturally create a sense of camaraderie that many veterans say they haven’t been able to recapture in civilian life. (The) Writers on the Storm (workshop) specifically uses the metaphor of a storm in each of their classes to help teach specific writing and journaling tools that can be used for the rest of their lives to help manage issues that come up in civilian life.” Starting on Thursday, Jan. 17, and continuing through Thursday, March 28, Writers on the Storm will be held at the Transitional Living Center, 105 E. King St., Lancaster. The workshops will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. No class will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14. Additionally, Writers on the Storm will be offered as part of Millersville University’s Lifelong Learning Institute, which will begin in March. YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, invites parents and their children ages 3 to 12 to celebrate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 21. Children ages 3 and 4 may attend from 10 to 11 a.m., and youths ages 5 to 12 will be welcome from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. Children will be able to make crafts relating to peace, diversity and King’s life. Excerpts from King’s most famous speeches will be played, and light refreshments will be served. There is no cost to attend, but preregistration is requested at https://ywcalancaster.org/mlkday/.

American Banker magazine’s 2016 Innovator of the Year, John Hope Bryant, will give the keynote address at the 31st annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Breakfast, which will be held on Monday, Jan. 21, by the Crispus Attucks Community Center. The event will take place at Millersville University’s Marauder Court at the Student Memorial Center, 21 S. George St., Millersville. Coffee and conversation will be offered from 6:30 to 7 a.m., and the meal and program will run from 7 to 9 a.m. For more than 30 years, the MLK Breakfast has aimed to bring members of the community together in a time to reflect and commit to being agents of change and to remember the life and legacy of its namesake. This year’s theme, “Why We Can’t Wait: Achieving Economic Equity,” will
