Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers (ACYS) uses singing as an avenue, a tool, to provide children with opportunities to discover themselves and learn about the worlds around them. “Singing is a natural process,” said Darla Bair, the founder and artistic director of ACYS. “Many

children sing before they speak. We all sing. It’s a natural human function.” A repur posing of a proven successful program, ACYS will be introduced as an organization to Lancaster County for the first time during an informational meeting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Lancaster Church of ACYS is seeking to duplicate the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., the successes it experienced in See ACYS pg 5 Rochester, N.Y.
As is usually the case with high school principals, Solanco’s Scott Long has a lot on his mind. While fondly remembering his time in the district, Long is embracing a new challenge. Long’s last day at Solanco High School will be Friday, Jan. 23. “Dr. Long has led from a place of humbleness and humility, and these traits have had such an important impact on Solanco High School,” Solanco School District superintendent Brian Bliss said. “From his first day here until now, he has so clearly been driven by a belief in the potential of each child. Every conversation I have had with him over the years has been supported by that belief. Such leaders are rare. I am pleased he will be continuing to serve Solanco students in a different, yet very important, capacity. I have tremendous gratitude for what he accomplished at Solanco.” On Monday, Jan. 26, Long will begin in his new role as administrative director of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). Based in Willow Street, Long will oversee all five LCCTC campuses - the three main high school campuses, Willow Street, Mount Joy, and Brownstown; the public safety center in Mount Joy; and the nursing program in Willow Street. The LCCTC works with approximately 1,500 high school students and more than 1,000 adult education students. “I really didn’t know much about LCCTC until I started at Solanco,” said Long. “I’ve seen students really have their lives completely See Scott Long pg 8

LCAA Sets Show, Winter Classes
Grant Reinforces North Star Initiative’s Mission
The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg , will kick off its winter membership show with a reception on Sunday, Jan. 18. The show will run through Thursday, Feb. 12. Henrietta HoltonThomas, a past president of LCAA, will have an exhibit of her artwork in the Steinmetz Gallery. Her show will include works in watercolors, oils, and sculpture. Show hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. LC AA will also offer winter classes. Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “The Machine in the Parlor: A Sewing Revolution” by historian Hope McCaffrey on Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The hourlong presentation will explore the history of the sewing machine and its integration into the home. McCaffrey will discuss how the machine revolutionized sewing and went from a prized middle-class o b j e c t to a n o rd i n a r y household tool. McCaffrey is the assistant program director of the Richards Civil War Era Center and an assistant research professor in the Department of Histor y at Penn State. McCaffrey earned her doctorate in history from Northwestern University in 2025. She is a historian of gender and politics in the 19th-century United States. Her research has been supported by the New York Historical; the Bancroft Librar y at the University of California, Berkeley; the New York Public Librar y; and the American Association of University Women. ACYS is broken down into two age-related groups - the SaraSingers for children ages 6 to 10 and the Lyric Choir for Singers for older kids between ages 11 and 14. Children and their families are asked to register before the informational meetings at www.amadeus chorale.org. There are fees associated with participation in the programs. “(The singers) will learn that there are people all around the world who share the dreams they have,” said Bair. “Different languages don’t separate us. It’s a global perspective. We teach children that there are right ways to do things. We teach them how to do things properly so they can grow in confidence. That’s the kind of things we look at and celebrate as a win.” Par ticipating singers will rehearse for an hour each week. As the singers progress, the choirs will c re a te re c o rd i n g s a n d music videos, per for m publicly at about three or four concerts and festivals each year, collaborate with other groups of musical ar tists and embark on trips. “We give our kids a lot of experiences,” said Bair.
“I don’t believe in competitions. I only want to give my kids stories to tell of where they’re singing and who they’re singing for. I want the kids to have experiences to have lifetime stories to tell.” ACYS participation is open to all Lancaster County youths with an interest in singing. “I’d like to see all Lancaster County children come sing with me,” said Bair, a native of Lancaster County and a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We don’t have a maximum number. If we have a choir that gets too big, we’ll start a new one. We have two requirements: A child must sing in tune, and a child must show respect for every adult involved. That’s it.” Involvement with ACYS programs could instill a lifelong love of singing into maturing youths. Proceed with caution. “They are children who already know they love singing and their parents are willing to suppor t them,” said Bair. “This is for kids and their families. It’s like the family is joining the organization together. These are people who want to invest in their children and get the type of high-quality music instruction you can’t get anywhere else. You can see the quality in the things we do.”

“Parents can expect their children will be elevated in their vocal etiquette,” added Bair. “They can expect their children will be in a safe environment. (The children) can be who they authentically are. The parents often form their own sub-group, like a club of parents.” Bair originally founded ACYS in Rochester, N.Y., in 1996. At the heights of its success, the program featured 140 singers and staged performances at numerous high-profile events. “We just sort of moved it here,” said Bair. “I’m really open to the opportunities here. We want to duplicate the joys of the stories, but the stories are going to be different here. These kids will be very much of the community, learning about it and being a part of it.”

J.’s W h o l e s a l e C l u b, which is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and operates a local location at 110 Centerville Road,
Lancaster. The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took a b o u t fo u r m o n t h s to complete. After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted. “It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,”
said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. Madison during the War of 1812. “The Lord provides these opportunities and everything that comes our way,” said Prickett. “We think about it and process it, and it’s just really neat to see how God provides these opportunities.” The White House held a search for performers over the summer. “I had a couple people send it to me because they thought it’d be a really cool opportunity for us to do, and I just filled out the application,” said Prickett. “I sent them a little video of us singing a Christmas carol and kind of forgot that I did it.” She lear ned in early September that Perfect Harmony had been chosen. “I couldn’t really believe it because we found out that out of the thousands or whatever that applied, they only take 24,” Prickett said. “It’s a tremendous honor to be invited and then get to represent our state and our community and then to be in that space surrounded by the history and the grandeur of the White House is so beautiful.” Perfect Harmony was formed eight years ago. “We were cast together in a show with Servant Stage, and we loved how we sounded, and we wanted to keep singing together,” Prickett said. “We kept talking about that and then came up with the name Perfect Harmony. We were
sitting in Ric’s living room. After that show closed, we decided we wanted to keep singing and went out on our own.” Prickett was also doing another show at that time, and she needed to replace people that were in it. “Since we were already singing together, Ric came on board, Sarah came on board,” said Prickett. “Because of that, it gave us the launching pad to keep going places and singing places and getting invited places.” In addition to the White House, Perfect Harmony has performed at Dollywood, in New Jersey and Ohio, and at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C. “It’s just really neat to see how God is using what we do and that we can impact people,” Prickett said. The musical group is based in Paradise Station, the Ronks business owned by Prickett and her husband, Tyler, which includes a hotel, restaurant, and venue known as The Barn. The Barn is the original bank barn on the property, dating to 1812. Following a renovation, it reopened in June 2023 as an event and wedding venue. “It just so happened that we had entertainment, and we could now make this a home for what we do,” she said. “We are passionate about providing original
musical performances that inspire ever ybody that comes through these doors, and it’s important to us that there’s always an element of the Gospel message to it.” She is grateful for the support from the community. “We consider it an honor to be able to present what we do to people from all walks of life, and we want to impact every single person that comes into this space (at Paradise Station) or comes to one of our other concerts, no matter where that is,” she said. “We just love doing what we do.”

We’ll have that memory of something special that we got to do together, which is really neat.” Many of the attendees were on tours. “A lot of people came and stood and listened to sing through several songs because they would move on, and it was neat,” said Zimmerman. “It was all people, all ages and families, children, and it was fun seeing even the children all dressed up. It was obviously a very special event for people that were there. Seeing people’s faces when they would come into the room where we were singing was beautiful, and then I think the music that we provided just added an extra touch of Christmas and just made it really special for people.” Perfect Harmony performed near a 1797 portrait of George Washington, which was saved by Dolley

Long will hit the ground running. “(LCCTC) has been growing, and the need for skilled employees in the trades is growing,” he said. “Because of that, they’ve had a significant amount of increase in their applications. Some of their high demand programs have a significant wait list. We’re seeing kids apply to programs, they qualify, and we know they would do well, but they’re not getting in because there might be 100 applications for 24 seats, for example. So without a doubt, I think we have to find a way to increase our capacity, for sure. That’s probably on the forefront of my mind.” Long will be succeeded at Solanco High by Zac Bauermaster, who is currently the principal at Providence Elementary School. Originally from North East, Md., Long joined the Solanco School District in
August 2012, working as a physical education and health teacher at Smith Middle School for three years. He was an assistant principal at Solanco High for four years before taking over as principal in 2020, guiding the school through the pandemic. L o n g d o e s n ’ t re g re t having to deal with trying times. “That was probably the most difficult year in my school administrative career, and I’m thankful I had it,” he said. “I wouldn’t change it. I’m glad I was in this role for that because it kind of molded me into the leader I am today.” Long lists several major accomplishments during his tenure as principal, giving the credit to faculty and staff. “I would say the first thing is the team we’ve assembled,” said Long. “I think we’ve hired really good people over the years. We’ve hired teachers who are caring, empathetic,

compassionate. They really are student-centered. They care about their students. I think we have a really strong team of educators, so I pride myself in that.” Solanco High has also expanded its offerings and has added 10 AP courses. “We’ve expanded into some innovative ideas with our courses,” said Long. “We added a robotics course years ago. Next year we’re adding a course on drones where students become licensed to fly a commercial drone. It really speaks to the expertise on our staff. I’m really proud of the opportunity that we give kids. We really want to just have as many different options available and hope that kids experience something that gives them a glimpse into what they want to do after high school.” What he will miss most is the people he has worked alongside. “Not to sound too cliché, but I’ve been in this building for about 12 years now, and that means I’ve worked with a lot of people,” said Long, who also previously served as the head coach of Solanco’s varsity
boys’ basketball team. “I’ve hired a lot of people, so I’ve been here with them for their entire careers. I’m at the point now where a lot of my students, I know their families because there were older siblings, so I’m connected to their families. That’s 12 years of relationships, and without a doubt, that’s what I’ll miss the most.” Long noted that he is grateful for the support he has received from the school board, Bliss, and assistant superintendent Robert Dangler. “We have a great school board. Our school board is very stable,” Long said. “They’re consistent; they’re involved. It’s a very common thing for our school board to stop by and do tours and visit our teachers and students. ... I’m thankful for the leadership from Dr. Bliss, Dr. Dangler. It’s just a very authentic place to work.” Long is leaving with lots of wonderful memories. “I really appreciate my time here, and the years at Solanco have been the best of my professional career,” he said. “I’m just thankful for the time here.”

The two-day event, t h e m e d “ 3 5 Ye a r s o f Stewardship, Sustainability, and Environmental E d u c a t i o n ,” f e a t u r e d workshops and community engagement sessions focused on solar energy, secondhand markets and recycling, programming and education that encourages waste minimization a n d i n s p i re s t h e n e x t generation, leverag ing cor porate par tnerships to advance a m ission, and more. H i g h l i g h t s f ro m t h e co n fe re n ce i n c l u d e d a keynote address by Lara Fowler, Penn State Dickinson Law, emphasizing the power of community in fostering local resilience and economic well-being; youth engagement with four KPB Young Ambassadors representing Erie, Pike, and Chester counties bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the event; and a “Shark Tank”-style competition in which KPB affiliates showcased their most innovative and impactful community improvement ideas. The competition was hosted by Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection secretary Jessica Shirley, and Scranton Tomorrow took home the $3,500 grant to expand its collaboration with Mar ywood STARS, an after-school mentoring program for junior and senior high school students that aims to cultivate knowledge in native sustainable horticulture, foster civic engagement, and instill community pr ide. T he program will culminate i n a s t u d e n t- d e s i g n e d landscape planting at the Scranton Courthouse. T he conference was sponsored in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
