It’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own.

“At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. Emily Smucker-Beidler said that she doesn’t know if she prefers teaching art or being an artist. The West Hempfield Township resident will be able to do both during the hands-on Redware Ornaments Workshop, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The event is for people 13 years old and up. There is a fee to participate; Mennonite Life members receive a discount on tickets. The cost of materials is included. Anyone who wishes to take part must register at https://mennonite life.org/events by Thursday, Jan. 15. Guests will make their own redware ornaments that they can pick up at Mennonite Life four weeks after the activity. “Redware refers to the kind of clay which was used by the early American potters,” SmuckerBeidler said. “Many of them were farmers, and they would find a vein of clay in their field. The legend is that they would walk around the field, and wherever it didn’t make a footprint they knew that there was clay underneath there. They’d dig up that clay and process it and make it into functional items. This was something that was brought over from Europe, but it’s a very early American craft. They needed functional items to use. They started making pottery, and the potters would make it and then sell it.” Smucker-Beidler explained how the process works. “In my workshops, everyone has a prepared slab of clay,” she said. “The slab has been rolled out, smoothed, painted with the white slip (which is watered-down clay), and gotten See Feats of Clay pg 3

Anyone who is interested in participating can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/ br wf7xvh by Saturday, Jan. 10. “The swim team wanted to try to get middle school students excited about joining the varsity swim team in high school,” said Corinne Tolan, the Y ’s aquatics director. “Varsity Swim Night is all about pairing a middle school swimmer with one of the high school swimmers so that they can get an idea of what joining the swim team is all about and get to feel the camaraderie of being on a sports team. I t w a s re a l l y f u n l a s t year because I got to see some familiar faces from the pool and from the Y having a good time. And it’s also nice to see that mentorship happening too.” It is also an afternoon to remember the careers of the L-S senior team mem-
bers. “It’s a fun night,” said Tolan. “I enjoy seeing people come out to cheer on their classmates. I’m an L-S alumnus, so I might be a little bit biased, but I’m just super proud to see what they’ve accomplished. They deserve to be celebrated.” In the IronMember Challenge, YMC A members have six weeks to complete a total of 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of riding on a stationary bike, and 26.2 miles of running. Members will track their progress on the wellness floor. “Instead of calling it an Ironman, we’re calling it an IronMember, and members will have six weeks to complete the full distances of what you would in an Ironman challenge,” Tolan said. “ This is all inside, and the purpose is to help people meet their New Year’s resolutions, their fitness resolutions, and get them started out right. It’s fun because you’ll get a pin if you finish and bragging rights.” The aquatics division is

holding the 100-Mile Swim Challenge where participants will have a year to swim 100 miles. Members can par ticipate in the challenge at both the Lampeter-Strasburg and City Center branch YMC A s. There is a fee to take part in the activity. If members sign up at L-S, proceeds support youth swimming at that branch, and if they sign up at the City Center branch, proceeds support the Safety Around Water program for School District of Lancaster students. Anyone who completes the challenge will receive a T-shirt and certificate. Anyone participating in either the IronMember or swim challenge can count their swim miles toward
both goals. Tolan touted the health benefits of completing both challenges and added that both activities help the YMCA advance one of its missions. “Part of the reason that we’re doing these challenges is to have members have a reason to come back and to build community, because that’s also really important,” she said. “There’s the group so far that has signed up for the 100-mile swim; it’s a bunch of our regulars, and I’m trying to let them know this person has signed up for this challenge with you, so that they get to know each other. That’s, I think, one of the important things that the YMCA creates is a sense of community.”

to a point where it is what we call cheddar cheesehard or leather-hard. That means that it’s not floppy, it’s not wet, but it’s not so hard that it’s going to break off in chunks. It’s that sweet spot where you can take the cookie cutters and cut out the shapes that you want for your ornaments.” Attendees may use their own design or choose one of Smucker-Beidler’s suggestions. “I have handouts of traditional Pennsylvani a Ger man desig ns that were used on actual pottery in the 1700s, and I show how to transfer those designs and start carving them,” she said. “I think it’s important when you’re learning these traditional crafts that you go back to the source, so I made an image collection, and these are all images from the 1700s and 1800s. I have just a little talk that goes along with these, so people can understand the history and what was involved in it and just how amazing some of these early American redware potters were.” I f yo u s ele c t one o f the designs found in the books, Smucker-Beidler encourages adding some personal touches. “We talk about how to take those traditional designs that I’ve copied from some of them and how to make them your own,” she said. “The first step in a folk art is learning what has come before us, but the real step where you’re really showing your individuality is when you take that and make it your own in some way. I’m amazed at how different all of the ornaments look after people take my class, and I get ideas as an artist as well.” Smucker-Beidler is retired after a 33- year teaching career, which included stints at Landisville Primary Center and Yo r k S u b u r b a n H i g h School. “I had access to all

Parents of young children have undoubtedly read or learned about the benefits of giving children time to engage in creative pursuits. Such activities can help foster cognitive development in youngsters, but the benefits of being creative do not end in adolescence. Adults also have much to gain from being creative. A 2021 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health noted a positive relationship between creativity and subjective well-being in adults. Such findings reveal the success of creative pursuits and are enough to compel some adults to pursue hobbies in an effort to ignite their creative fire. Creativity can be defined in a number of ways, but various activities may be just what adults need to reap the rewards of being more creative. Painting: Many adults who paint characterize this recreational activity as a great way to unwind and ease stress. Painting requires creativity, and even avid painters may not recognize that painting is a mental exercise that encourages problem-solving. That can have a profound impact on mental health, as a 2015 study in the journal Neurology found that adults who engaged in creative pursuits like paint-

Friends Group Supports Police Department The Friends of the West Lampeter Township Police D e p a r t m e n t ( W LT P D ) recently reimbursed West Lampeter Township for the cost of a two- year package including the use, repair, and replacement of four Flock Safety recognition cameras. The package includes installation, maintenance, upgrades, and software support. The solar-powered cameras do not collect personal information or use facial reco gnition. Using collected data such as make, model, color, and direction, they can provide real-time alerts and searchable vehicle
information even without license plate data. All captured images and data are uploaded to Flock Safety’s secure cloud storage. The Conestoga River is in the running for River of the Year for 2026, and the Conestoga River Club and partners encourage ever yone in the Conestoga watershed to vote. Up until that point, Servant Stage had been doing the best it could with what it had, while the mission around it was flourishing. “It’s so nice to have our own space,” said Bauer. “It’s fun every day. It’s nice to be able to have a conversation and not have to reply to an email. Having no space for so many years, you get used to it. A lot of it was working from home. We were storing sets and props in basements, garages and barns. Efficiency is a huge part of what we do. We were doing so many shows that it wasn’t sustainable.” Servant Stage’s new home base is eight rooms and 8,500 square feet in size, 5,000 of which is dedicated to a workshop, warehouse and storage space and 3,500

The space can also accommodate smaller auditions and rehearsals for the more than 15 productions and 190 performances that the organization has been staging each year. “We have been looking and actively exploring spaces for a workshop and theater for like six or seven years now,” said Bauer. “Back in May, we came across this place in Greenfield, and our Realtor connected us with the landlord. We knew from the very first visit that it checked all of the boxes. The lease was signed in a month or so. This kind of fell into our lap.” Prior to its recent move, Servant Stage was practicing and rehearsing for performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, at 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, not far from its new home. Depending upon the demands of each production, some of those rehearsals will continue to be conducted at the church. “The focus of the mission is on service,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “The idea of using the performing arts and theater to serve the community, that’s been the mission from the very beginning and that’s why we chose that name. We love theater and the community, and there’s both a why and a how behind it.” “ With our mission of
bringing shows into the community, we’ve been nomadic,” continued Bauer. “Everyone on the team is very flexible and good at problem-solving. We’ve been able to make it grow so much, but we’ve grown so much. The amount of programming we’re doing is growing, and our staff is growing. You need a space for it. It’s definitely long overdue.” Servant Stage is projecting to present 20 productions for both adults and youths with more than 220 total performances in 2026. The traveling troupe’s performances will be staged at high schools, churches and retirement communities across Lancaster County. “When you factor in all the rehearsals, it’s a lot,” said Bauer. “It’s people wanting to be a part of it. We’ve seen 300 people at auditions for performances that have had 150 spots.
That’s why we keep adding pro d uc t ion s . We ke e p getting requests for performances. There are certainly plenty of challenges, but we haven’t gotten to a place where we’ve had to cut back on shows because we don’t have performing places.” “(Operating our own theater) is definitely a dream as well,” added Bauer. “We would love to have a theater to do these shows. It’s still a dream down the road that would make more performances possible, but it’s one step at a time.” Ser vant Stage, which is funded through freewill offerings received at performances, business partnerships, sponsorships, individual donations and grant funding, is operated by seven full-time employees, six part-timers and a host of volunteers. Are we ever too old to make new friends? Absolutely not, say the senior citizens who gather on Tues d ay mor nings for SALT (Seniors Are Living Treasures). T he g roup meets for fun, friendship and fellowship from 9 a.m. to noon weekly at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “ We might have any where from 25 to 30 people each week ,” said Trac y Miller, who coordinates the group with a team of volunteers. “We have people in their 50s and up. Our oldest member is 93.” Each meeting beg ins with people gathering up to 30 minutes early in the

L e o ’s He l p i n g Paw s , based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the
treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. It’s just in me. It’s my nurturing instinct.” The nonprofit is named after Leo, a tri-colored corgi that was adopted in 2009. “We’re just very passionate about rescue because there’s so many dogs out there that need homes,” said Styer. Styer said most of the dogs the organization helps are abandoned or come from a breeding facility. “Because of some switches in the laws, the breeders will reach out to rescues to take the dogs when they’re done
breeding them,” she said. In October, there was a rescue in Delaware that rescued 61 dogs from a breeder facility. “ We gave them $10,000 to treat every dog, to get their initial exams and all the bloodwork and things like that,” said Styer. “That was our largest grant ever.” Styer and Buchter also aid dogs as a side project unrelated to Leo’s Helping Paws. “(Recently) Beth and I, we picked up two 7-month-old corgis that didn’t sell from a breeder in Honey Brook,” said Styer. We talk to each other outside of these meetings.” Fellowship is the focus of SALT meetings, although the food is a close second, the members joke. “Ever yone pitches in, and it’s wonderful,” Shonk said. “This room is filled with people who have found connection with each other.” S A LT b e g a n w h e n Miller recruited a few of her friends to help form the ministry. Seventeen people showed up for the first meeting , and the group has grown to include members from across Lancaster County. “ T here isn’t a senior center in the Mount Joy/ Manheim area, and while we don’t want to be a senior center, we do want to provide outreach ministry,” Miller said. “We want to provide connection and fellowship.” W hile SALT officially meets once a week, its members ge t to ge ther regularly outside of the program, including meeting up for wing night at Beanie ’s in Mount Joy or driving each other to doctor appointments. They also support each other through tough times. When Renee’s husband, Do u g , pa s s e d away i n August, SALT members showed up for her. “Eighteen people from here came to my hus band’s funeral, and most had never met him,” she said. “ We take care of
each other. A lot of the people who come have said how lonely they were before this. Now they look for ward to this. I can’t imagine a week going by without coming to this.” For member Mae Pierce, S A LT has provided an opportunity to push herself outside of her comfort zone. “I needed to challenge myself to get out of the house,” she said. “SALT stands for Seniors Are Living Treasures, but this salt is the f lavor that’s now part of my life. It’s gone beyond what it was supposed to be. I have met so many awesome friends. I go to the grocery story or a craft fair, and someone will yell out, ‘Mae!’ It’s so nice to have made so many connections.” “There’s fun stuff to do here. You’ll meet some characters, meet some sweet people and make some new friends,” Pierce continued. “It’s a community. You don’t have to be alone for that one morning a week.” SALT is open to anybody who is interested in attending, and people can just show up on a Tuesday morning; they do not need to register. The ministry is held year-round. People may park on the street and enter the church off of Main Street or access the building without climbing steps through the East Henry Street entrance via a parking lot at the rear of the church. such as playing bingo or enjoying a movie together. They also play round-robin matches of games like cornhole or ladderball, switching tables regularly to encourage interaction among ever yone. The group also brings in guest speakers to discuss a wide ra n g e o f to p i c s . O nce a quarter, the church’s pastor, Richard Vaughn, provides a full breakfast for the group. Although SALT meets at the church, religious affiliation is not a requirement to join the group. “I t ’s ju s t a m in is t r y t h r o u g h o u r c h u r c h ,” Miller said. “We will take anybody who is interested in coming. Some people come week after week. Some people have other activities they’re involved in and can only come once a month, and that’s OK.” Many of the members have lost a spouse and are looking for connection and companionship. That’s the case for Connie Bear, who started coming to SALT when the ministry began in October of 2024. “ Today is three years since I lost my husband,” she said on a recent Tuesday morning. “In my marriage, I didn’t have friends really beyond my husband, so I was looking for somewhere to go to have fellowship and make new friends. I was looking for companionship.” She found that at SALT. “Ever ybody is so nice here,” she said. “We love each other. There are so many wonderful people here, and you feel like a
