Countertop Conversion: Options for Updating a Kitchen
Many items within a kitchen contribute to giving the room its personality. Appliances and the choice of cabinets go a long way toward crafting a specific look, but a kitchen is also defined by a homeowner’s choice of countertops. Countertops are where the action takes place in a kitchen. It is where meals are prepared and where hungry houseguests or curious kids watch the family chef whip up the night’s meal. The options with regard to countertop surfaces are numerous, and the following are just a few of the more popular options that homeowners may wish to consider, whether designing from scratch or simply remodeling.
LAMINATE
Laminate countertops are popular and affordable. Made of sheeting glued to plywood or particleboard substrate, laminate countertops are water-resistant but not very heat-resistant, so homeowners will want to place any hot pans, pots, or baking sheets on trivets or hot pads to maintain the laminate. Many homeowners prefer laminate countertops because they are available in many
colors, meaning a match can be found to suit any homeowner’s preference, no matter how colorful those preferences may be! Seams, however, are often very visible with this option, so homeowners should be prepared. Cutting directly on laminate countertops is not recommended, but such surfaces are easy to clean and maintain.
QUARTZ
Quartz is among the most durable countertop surfaces available, as it is resistant to bacteria, heat, stains, and water. Though quartz is not available in as many shades as laminate, it is similarly easy to clean. Like laminate countertops, though, quartz surfaces tend to have easily visible seams, which may irk homeowners who find such minor imperfections an eyesore. Quartz countertops can also be expensive depending on the amount of surface area a kitchen has, so budget-conscious homeowners may prefer less-costly alternatives.

GRANITE
The natural beauty of granite is typically what draws homeowners to install this surface material in their kitchens. Thanks to
unique shading and tone, granite countertops are never the same from one home to the next, and granite complements many different cabinet colors. Granite also is resistant to heat, scarring, and, when sealed properly, stains. Granite, however, is naturally porous, so if it is not sealed properly, it can harbor bacteria. Some granite countertops must be sealed annually, while some pretreated countertops can go as long as 15 years without a need for resealing. Another aspect to consider is that unlike other countertop materials, granite, which is among the more expensive options, is not available in as many colors, so homeowners will have to choose from just 20 or so shades.
RECYCLED GLASS
Individuals who want to give their kitchens a modern and eco-friendly feel may want to consider recycled glass countertops. Recycled glass countertops, the majority of which are now produced with 80 to 90 percent post-consumer glass, are made of pieces of glass held together with cement binders. Some individuals might be concerned that countertops made of recycled glass are not very strong, but the cement binders are very hard, making these countertops durable and unlikely to chip or crack. Recycled glass countertops come in various colors and are resistant to both heat and stains. Installation of recycled glass countertops can be tricky, though, as improper installation can lead to stress points that make the glass susceptible to cracking. As a result, installation is best left to professionals with experience on such projects. Recycled glass countertops can be quite expensive as well. A homeowner’s choice of countertop surface material can go a long way toward defining the personality of his or her kitchen, so homeowners should consider their options before making a final decision.

Many homeowners are tempted to prune their trees and shrubs in the autumn as the leaves fall off and greenery thins out for the season. Gardening experts, however, often advise that it is best for homeowners to wait until winter or early spring before pruning. Although pruning does thin out branches and tame spent blooms, which can be eyesores, pruning also stimulates new growth, improves the health of a tree or shrub, and can promote curb appeal and the vitality of nearby plants. Pruning in the autumn, though, when plants are naturally preparing to go dormant, can weaken plants considerably and compromise their chances of surviving into the next growing season. Waiting until winter before taking out the shears has a variety of advantages. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap at this time of year like they will at others, nor will they be harmed or primed to grow by the pruning. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees,
for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. This type of beetle hibernates in the winter, however, making it the ideal season to prune oak trees. When preparing to prune, individuals should consider various pointers to streamline the task. • Keep tools clean and in good working order. Homeowners risk injuring themselves if tools are dull and in poor shape overall. Spend time sharpening pruners and keep manual tools oiled and clean. Debris can lodge itself in clippers, making it more difficult to open and shut them. Wash and dry tools after use, especially when dealing with diseased plants. Otherwise you risk spreading disease to healthy plants. • Cut back stems completely. It is usually a good idea to prune branches back to the main stem. A portion sticking out can prove hazardous, as people or animals may bruise themselves or catch clothing or collars on stubs. Leaving pieces of stem can also produce a gathering spot for bacteria

and insects. Remember, it is best to take out thinner, smaller shoots before moving on to any dead or dying branches. • Prune dry branches. Do not prune when plants are wet. Pruning damp plants encourages the growth of microbes that can infiltrate the plant and cause disease. This is not as significant a problem in the winter, when freezing temperatures should already have killed microbes. • Ask an expert. Some trees and plants require care at different times of the year. If unsure of how and when to prune particular plants, homeowners should consult with an expert at a nursery or landscaping company. Someone in the field should be able to answer any questions and recommend proper action. Pruning trees and shrubs surrounding a home has many advantages, improving not only the look of the landscape but the health of the plants. Tending to overgrowth can also help to prevent accidents should a storm cause large, weak limbs to split or break off. Determining the best time of year to tackle pruning can ensure a project’s success.
• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing, or growing parallel to one another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground. • Remove dead, broken, or diseased limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and they are not going to grow back. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping makes a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation and decreases its life expectancy. Some individuals believe that topping trees will prevent a tree from getting larger, but topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches.
