The Brickerville House is on the list of Historic Buildings in Lancaster. Built by John and Barbara Bricker in 1753, it was located on the main road from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. The original portion of this house served as a stagecoach stop and tavern over the years. We’re not sure if George Washington ever ate, drank or slept here but it’s a sure bet that Peter Grubb, Baron Von Stiegel and other early American Patriots did!

At Silverstone Inn & Suites
By Dayna M. Reidenouer “People come here for three reasons: theaters, shopping, and the Amish,” said Lorin Wortel, who co-owns and operates Silverstone Inn & Suites with her husband, Antoni. The 10,000-square-foot, three-story house and 15-acre farm at 62 Bowman Road, Lancaster, is located directly across the street from The Shops @ Rockvale and just minutes away from Tanger Outlets. The owners note that it is also close to American Music Theatre and Sight & Sound Theatre. As the inn is nestled in the heart of Amish country, members of the Amish sect are often seen in the surrounding areas. “We’re a little oasis here,” Lorin remarked. The Wortels own hornless Jacob sheep, and 11 lambs joined the 15 adult ovines at Silverstone this spring. The sheep are friendly, and guests may feed them bread for a treat. Most of the farm is rented to an Amishman, and in the summer, the house and its outbuildings are typically surrounded by field corn, which is used to feed cattle. During the planting and harvesting seasons, guests can watch the processes as they are conducted using horse-drawn equipment. Additionally, Silverstone is a popular venue for Amish folks who are visiting the area or who just want some time alone while being close to home.
The Wortels are the most recent owners of Silverstone in a line that stretches back centuries. Originally part of the William Penn land grant from King Charles II in 1681, the Silverstone property shrank over time from 1,000 acres to its current size. In 1750, a springhouse was built over Willow Run. Ten years later, the room that the Wortels use as their guests’ dining room was constructed. The main portion of the stone house was erected in 1780. Eventually, the house and property were purchased by Arthur and Verna Morgan, who were among the founders of the New Holland Machine Company. The farm was used to test equipment, while large parties were hosted on the first floor of the house. The Morgans lived in the home for 55 years, but after Arthur's death, Verna moved to a nursing home, and the house stood vacant for more than a decade. After purchasing the house in 2003, the Wortels switched it to a geothermal HVAC system and installed a photovoltaic array, which provides the electric power for the house. Each bedroom has its own climate control, and most have gas fireplaces. Antoni, an engineer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, did most of the work on the house himself. Among his projects: turning Verna's former sewing room into a "brown café" reminiscent of those in his home country. The bar

is a giant slab of black walnut, which has been varnished and polished to an incredible smoothness and shine. The ceiling, although it appears to be tin, is actually a textured wallpaper that Lorin painted flat black and then touched with silver highlights. While the Wortels do not provide alcohol, guests are welcome to bring their own to share in the café or enjoy in their own rooms. Lorin said that some guests have returned regularly, and they enjoy catching up while relaxing in the café or the living room over a glass of wine. To dampen the passage of sound in the house, Antoni built floating walls and ceilings. In the café room, steps were cut into the ceiling so that it would not cover the top of the built-in corner cabinet. Additional corner cabinets with the same arched design are found throughout the first floor. Accenting the walls and several glass-topped tables in the brown café are examples of Lorin's handcrafting skills. A cross-stitched image of the house won a blue ribbon at the West Lampeter Fair, and a hardanger table runner earned Best of Show there as well. In the living room, a nearly life-size portrait of a bride ascending a staircase is prominently displayed near an electric piano. From a distance, it looks almost photographic; in reality, though, Lorin used 90 colors to complete the cross-stitched masterpiece. Other framed examples of Lorin’s intricate embroidery hang in several guest rooms. For their efforts in restoring the home, the Wortels received the C. Emlen Urban Award for Preservation from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County in 2007. "The Trust was really great to work with," Lorin said, noting that the organization helped her retain the home's historic charm while making it welcoming for modern guests. That charm is evident throughout the house. Photographs and paintings of Lorin’s parents and grandparents line the stairs to the second floor. Family heirlooms complement modern décor, and one of the eight bedrooms is furnished with an antique bedframe and dresser that Lorin found in her mother’s collection. The innerspring mattresses in every room have received rave reviews from guests. There is also a wheelchair-accessible suite on the first floor that seamlessly blends contemporary assistive design with antique accessories. A replica of a suit of armor stands near the stairwell. Its patina suggests advanced age but is belied by the “Mexico” stamped on the gauntlet. Antoni bought the armor at an auction for a song. Lorin related that when her husband saw the armor, he insisted on bidding on it, saying, “We have to have some quirky things!” A pump organ sits across from the piano on one side of the living room. Lorin is an avid vocalist; she is a member of several choirs, one of which practices every Thursday evening. If Antoni goes out while Lorin is away, the Wortels leave their contact information at the registration desk in case their guests need anything. What typically happens, though, is that after guests check in, which may be as early as 4 p.m., they go out for dinner or a show, and they never know Lorin has been gone. The doors to the house are always kept locked, even when the Wortels are home, and every guest is given a code to get in upon check-in. In the mornings, the Wortels are up bright and early to prepare gourmet breakfasts and coffee for their guests. The meals, which are served, start with sweetbreads

and fresh fruit. The entrees may include omelets with portobello mushrooms, homegrown leeks, and cheese; almond-encrusted French toast fingers; or Dutch pancakes made from a recipe Antoni brought from his home country. “They’re similar to crepes,” Lorin explained. “We serve them rolled with jam or maple syrup.” If the previous year has been a good one, the Wortels will use maple syrup harvested from the sugar maples on their property. In the spring, the couple hopes for warm days and cool nights, as the combination gets sap running quickly. When the weather is right, guests are welcome to observe the sugaring-off process, which takes place in one of the barns. The largest barn on the property was recently turned into a wedding and reception venue that can accommodate up to 200 people, and that business is managed by the Wortels’ daughter, Miranda, and her husband, Nickolis Wagner. Wedding guests may stay at the inn, but the Wortels have one rule: The wedding hosts must rent all the rooms or none at all. This ensures that those involved with the wedding do not need to work around unfamiliar guests. Lorin said that if a wedding party rents the inn, the newlywed couple typically gets the springhouse, a one-room suite. “It’s not as fancy as up there,” she said, pointing to the second and third floors, “but it’s got its privacy.” Multiple television pilots have been filmed at Silverstone, including one that explored the paranormal. Lorin said that she is occasionally asked if the house has ghosts. “No, but if we did, they’d be happy that people are having a good time here,” Lorin said she replies. “They’d like that we’re putting a smile on this old house.” Silverstone Inn & Suites welcomes romance, and to promote that feel, each room sleeps two and no children under age 12 are allowed. Special packages featuring flowers, chocolate-dipped strawberries, or special libations are available for an extra cost. The facility has complimentary Wi-Fi. ennsylvania has a rich history of producing food, both agriculturally and via factories. It only makes sense that festivals and fairs to celebrate the food fare of the state are abundant and bountiful. Naturally, many food festivals occur during the growing seasons and harvest times of particular foods, but visitors and locals alike can sate their appetites with some diverse offerings throughout the year. The following are just a sampling of the sweet, crunchy, salty, sticky, pungent, smoky, juicy, tart, creamy, bitter, earthy culinary offerings in the southcentral and southeastern parts of Pennsylvania, which truly feature something for every taste bud. pretzel rolls, cheeseburgers topped with Lebanon bologna, and more, the festival features performances, a beer and wine festival, a cornhole tournament, and a bologna sandwich eating contest. Next event: January 2020 Picklefest, Dillsburg – A 5K Pickle Chase, a pickle eating contest, and every pickle treat imaginable await attendees at one of Dillsburg’s much-anticipated events. Pennsylvania Farm Show, Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania Farm Show is not strictly a food festival, as many aspects of farming are covered at the event: tractors and equipment, livestock/animal displays and competitions, square dancing, artisan demonstrations, educational programs, a giant butter sculpture, and celebrity chef demonstrations, to name a few. The Farm Show food court, however, is always a favorite aspect of the annual event (and also a place where New Year’s resolutions are quickly discarded). Food highlights at the farm show include honey and honey products; french fries and baked potatoes; milkshakes and ice cream; maple syrup, maple candy, and maple-coated nuts; mushrooms in many preparations, such as soup, deep fried, and grilled portobello sandwiches; vegetables pickled, fried, blended, and more; caramel apples, apple cider, apple butter, and apple dumplings; and beef, poultry, and pork in forms such as cheesesteaks, barbecue, hot dogs, chicken wings, and more. Next event: Jan. 4-11, 2020 Lebanon Bologna Fest and Winter Carnival, Lebanon – The Lebanon Rotary Club holds this annual winter festival celebrating the smoky sweet cured meat. In addition to foods like deep-fried Lebanon bologna, grilled bologna sandwiches on
South Ninth Street Italian Market Festival, Philadelphia – More than 70,000 people flock to the bustling South Philadelphia Italian Market for a weekend neighborhood block party that features vendors and local businesses, live music, a half-ball tournament, a greased pole competition, and family activities like face painting, balloon artistry, and more. Food highlights include specialty cheese and butcher shop wares, cannoli, roast pork, sausage and peppers, and pizza, as well as other ethnic foods like Korean barbecue and Mexican fare. Another aspect of the festival that cannot be overlooked is the many Dutch treats. Food favorites include homemade soups and sandwiches, sausage, potpie, corn fritters, funnel cake, shoofly pie, apple dumplings, freshly baked bread, and full-course Pennsylvania Dutch meals. Next event: June 29-July 7, 2019 VegFest, Bethlehem – The Lehigh Valley is marking the ninth annual celebration of vegan culture and sustainable living practices this year. Past events have included vegan cuisine, cooking demonstrations, local produce, yoga, live music, and small business and craft vendors. Next event: July 13, 2019 Shippensburg Corn Festival, Shippensburg – The Shippensburg Corn Festival celebrates the area’s largest crop, corn, while raising funds for community preservation and enhancement. Kettle corn, corn on the cob, and chicken corn soup are among a host of traditional fare. The festival also features a corn eating contest, craft vendors, and live entertainment. Taste of Hamburg-er Festival, Hamburg – Those seeking a great burger shouldn’t miss the chance to continue their search – and vote on their favorite – at the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival. More than 35 stands offer burgers, plus there are eating contests for professionals and amateurs, a beer garden, a ton of live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, wooden cow decorating, a race that involves running and consuming two burgers in 2 miles, and children’s activities. Next event: Aug. 31, 2019 Whoopie Pie Festival, Strasburg – The Whoopie Pie Festival celebrates one of Lancaster County’s iconic treats, the whoopie pie, with more than 100 flavors of the sweet treat, an amateur eating contest, whoopie pie treasure hunts, races, launches, and checkers, as well as a whoopie yell-off and the largest whoopie pie ever made. Easton Garlic Fest, Easton – The Easton Garlic Fest bills itself as a “stinkin’ good time” and celebrates the stinky yet delicious food with chef demonstrations and contests (garlic desserts, anyone?), tastings, and vendors. Also featured are live music and children’s activities like pony rides, bounce houses, and scarecrow making. Food highlights: garlic-drenched french fries, garlic mac and cheese, garlic ice cream, garlic Parmesan chicken wings, tater tots with garlic horsey sauce, honey garlic pulled pork, and garlic products.
