f Rob Evans has his way, the Susquehanna River and art inspired by it will someday surpass its famous neighbor to the north in notoriety. Many people know the Hudson River School, named for the New York waterway and considered the first fully American art movement. Evans hopes one day our local river will secure its place in history as a major influence on art. More than 20 years ago, Evans began exploring art inspired by the Susquehanna River. “We were never taught Quinn and Rob Evans with some of the art that will be featured in the new Susquehanna River Art Collection. For veterans, navigating all of the resources available in the community can be a complicated process. American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy wants to help. The Legion will host a Veterans Benefit Information Session at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will feature representatives from 12 agencies that support veterans and their care and recovery. Although the event will take place in Mount Joy, it’s open to all veterans and their caregivers throughout Lancaster County. “If you are a veteran or have a veteran family member, this event will bring many resources together for you to leverage at your fingertips,” said Stacey M i l l e r, s e r v i ce o f f i ce r fo r Post 185. “The needs of veterans vary, and these organizations can help you navigate to find the best care and programs available for the veteran and their caregiver.” With so many organizations offering different types of assistance, finding the right resource can be a challenge for veterans and their families. The information session will give attendees an opportunity to learn about services they may not know are available, ask questions about their individual circumstances and connect directly with people who can guide them through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion See Veterans pg 3

“If you’ve never been to our bazaar, you need to come and check it out. And if you have attended before, you know it is worth the trip,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, describing the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church event. “Every year there is always something new to see. We offer quality crafts to give as gifts or keep for yourself, a tasty lunch and tempting goodies to take home - or eat in the car!” Zion will hold its bazaar in the fellowship hall of the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7. “ We will have lots of handmade crafts for sale,” Eshleman said. “Every year a small and dedicated group of crafters get together monthly and work on a variety of new items for our customers, in addition to some members who make things at home.” Because the bazaar is close to Christmas, a large selection of Christmas-related decorations will be featured, but other seasonal goods will also be for sale. A wide variety of wooden items will also be available
for purchase, including poinsettias, gingerbread men, Christmas trees, angels, bird houses and more. “We’ve got new wreaths and arrangements and a large selection of premade bows in different sizes and colors. There is a collection of crocheted items, including dish cloths, fun creature hats, adorable amigurumi animals and pumpkins,” Eshleman shared. “We’ve got macrame ornaments, wristlets, key chains, bracelets, angels and owls. There are beaded jewelry bracelets, necklaces and earrings in all colors.” Additional items for sale include angels made from recycled hymnals; ornaments; and paper crafts, such as gift bags, memo pads and journals. Food will be available for purchase as well. Lunch will be served both days, with a menu of hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, soup du jour, chips and drinks. Take-home quarts of chicken corn soup, beef vegetable soup and ham and bean soup will be available, along with pints of hamburger, pulled pork and pulled chicken barbecue. “Homemade baked

Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English, and Martin Luther and his 95 theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists. Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland, and their heroic voyage to the New World. Thanksgiving

family affair for Rob. His daughter, Quinn Evans, also an artist, will serve as the museum’s executive director and is excited to showcase the river she grew up beside. Originally, Rob hoped to showcase the collection in a building on the Mifflin Farm in Wrightsville, a historic site that was a stop on the Underground Railroad. “In the last year, the collection has grown exponentially,” he said. “We were going to have about 6,000 square feet of space, but we determined we need at least double that.” Moving into the space on Second Street is a first step in Rob and Quinn’s long-term plan for the museum. “We’ll be there for at least the next five years, but we’re going to explore the future,” Rob said. “We’ll probably still end up needing an even bigger building.” A satellite space may still be established at Mifflin Farm, showcasing rotating exhibits and highlighting the river as a connector between York and Lancaster counties. Quinn is excited to oversee programming at the Columbia museum, bringing in artists for talks and hosting art beyond what’s on the walls. “ We might do poetry readings or bring in schools for educational programming ,” Quinn s a i d . “ T h e r e ’s a l o t o f p o t e n t i a l fo r t h i s museum. We have big dreams.” Rob credits the work and enthusiasm of the o r g a n i z a t i o n ’s b o a r d in helping drive the Susquehanna River Art Collection forward, and he’s just as excited as his daughter to introduce the public to the river’s influence on art. “As a kid wandering that mountaintop overlooking the river, I had no idea that there was this legacy,” he said, “or that I would be the one who eventually puts it back in the spotlight.” For more information on the Susquehanna R i ve r A r t C o l l e c t i o n , including how to support the development of the museum and collection, visit www.srafriends.org.

organization hopes to open the Susquehanna R ive r A r t Colle c t ion, which will be located in the former Garth Gallery at 22 S. Second St., Columbia. Evans, who grew up outside of Washington, D.C., spent his summers with his grandparents at a home perched high on a hill, overlooking the Susquehanna and across from Chickies Rock. “That’s when I liked to say I got infected by the river,” Rob said. “There’s an amazing, really important legac y here, but I didn’t understand the whole depth of it.” Since his 2005 exhibit, Rob has continued to amass a collection of art, supported by his longtime patron James Snyder. The collection, currently housed at the Historic Hellam Preserve, features centuries of river-inspired works, including Susquehannock artifacts and an iconic 400-year-old map of the New World, created by John Smith and featuring a Susquehannock warrior on it. To learn more about the Native Americans and their relationship with the river, Rob is working with Michael Mantooth, the historian of the Conestoga Susquehannock tribe. “We want to begin the story by acknowledging that they were here for centur ies mak ing ar t before the white people showed up,” Rob said. From there, the collection spans hundreds of years, showcasing large paintings that would have been found in the home of a wealthy family to commercial art found in magazines, maps, advertisements and more. As Rob began to acquire a larger and larger collection of river art, he knew he wanted to share it with the wider community. The Friends of the Susquehanna River Art Collection has helped propel Rob’s vision forward, along with support from Terri Sultan, who is the project’s chief consultant and strategist. “ S h e i s t h e fo r m e r curator at the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, D.C., and past director of the Parrish Art Museum in the Hamptons, N.Y.,” Rob said.
