Hope in Action BY LOGAN MOYER

W hat do es a communit y approach to suicide prevention look like? Mental Health America of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties offered a solution to that question at its annual Suicide Prevention Conference on Sept. 17 at the DoubleTree Resort in Willow Street. The conference’s theme this year was “Hope in Action,” which organizers said ref lects how meaningful change happens when the community moves beyond suicide awareness to take action by listening, learning and connecting to those who may be struggling. The conference gave attendees the opportunity to learn from local and regional experts. On the day, there were four breakout sessions and a panel discussion preceded by a keynote speech from Jay Breneman, director of firearm suicide prevention policy at CeaseFirePA. Breneman, of Erie, is a U.S. Army combat veteran. His work revolves around the gun violence crisis; firearm suicide is responsible for over half of gun deaths in the commonwealth. Breneman offered a fourpronged solution to the issue. His first point was for organizations to build feedback into the programs they already hold. “This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money,” Breneman said. “It doesn’t mean putting another barcode in front of you. There are similar ways to learn.” Secondly, he emphasized the importance of “giving other people the words.” “Most people in this room know how we should talk, mainly about people,” he said. “Our opportunity is helping everyone

We cook the chicken and roll out the dough. The whole club participates, and it’s a great way to support the community and support the Lions Club.” It’s a major endeavor for the club to prepare the meals. Each sale uses 400 pounds of chicken, 200 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of f lour and 45 dozen eggs. The club hosts a spring and fall pot pie sale on t h e t h i rd S a t u rd ay o f March and October, which the group has been doing for more than 60 years. “It’s a Mountville tradition that people support because it’s not only for a good cause, but it’s a tasty meal at a reasonable pr ice,” Weaver shared. “The pot pie suppers are o u r m a i n f u nd ra i s e rs , along with having roller ball stands at the Mountville Fire Co. Car nival and the Washington Boro Tomato Festival.” Proceeds from the pot

pie sale are used to support various Lions projects. “Projects supported by the club include funding scholarships at Hempfield High School, supporting Beacon Lodge - a nonprofit camp in Union County that offers programs for those who are blind or challenged physically in other ways - maintaining the pavilion at the borough park , sponsoring Team River Runner and other projects that help people with vision impairment,” Weaver said. “We also support the Columbia Food Bank and support the Mountville Community Picnic.” Additionally, the club collects used eyeglasses that are sent to be repaired and refurbished to help vision-impaired people around the world. “The public is welcome to drop off eye g lasses when they pick up their pot pie,” Weaver said. The Mountville Lions C lub will also host its annual Christmas food drive outside the Mountv i l l e P u b l i c L i b r a r y. More infor mation will be coming soon for that event.

Students across L ancaster County will benefit from a recent school supply drive organized by the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, which collected school supplies to support local students and families. The donated materials w i l l b e d i s t r i b u te d to Lancaster County school districts through Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13), helping the 16 districts address ongoing student needs

throughout the school year. While school supplies are often associated with the start of the academic year, districts frequently welcome new students and families throughout the year. The supplies will provide a readily available resource for students who enroll midyear or face challenges accessing necessary classroom materials. IU13’s Early Childhood and Special Education Services (ECSES) team will sort the donated materials before making them available through the District Special Education Admin-

istrators’ network and the District Social Workers’ Cohort. School districts will then identify local needs and distribute supplies directly to students and families. T he e f for t re f le c t s a commitment to supporting students and re d uc i n g b a r r ie rs t h at can impact educational success. By making these supplies available throug hout the year, local schools will be better equipped to meet emerging student needs and provide timely support to families.

Parade from pg 1 said. “We have the Zembo Shriners mini cars.” Local and regional bands, nonprofit groups, clubs and organizations will also participate in the parade. This year’s parade grand marshals will be Jim and Vickie Anspach. The couple has long been involved in community organizations throu g hout Columbi a , including the Columbia Education Foundation, Mount Bethel Cemetery and the Columbia Park Rangers. Unlike many parades, the Mardi Gras Halloween Parade handles judging of entries in a unique manner. R at h e r t h a n h av i n g a judging stand where bands perform or floats are in the spotlight, the Columbia parade features judges that roam the route, evaluating entries to determine winners. Chornock noted that the parade is a well-established tradition in Columbia, and people look forward to it every year. “It is the 79th annual

celebration, and the parade route is about one-and-ahalf miles long,” he said. “ We have food vendors along the route, and especially along Locust Street. We have a location near our gazebo (where) people can donate. The money that we collect is used towards the prizes that the winners receive for each of the different categories, and any funds left over are used for our student scholarships and donations to area nonprofits.” Several organizations have been the beneficiaries of Lions Club support, he said. “The Lions Club gives away donations throughout the year, such as the $20,000 donation that we presented to the Columbia Borough Fire Department toward their $2.2 million purchase of a new aerial ladder truck after this year’s Lions Club Car Show,” he remarked. For more information on the parade, visit https:// columbialions.org/parade.
