Students who participated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut nor th to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes

If they feel like they can’t afford to get the work done and it’s something we can help with, we don’t ask any questions.” Students in the camp are in grades seven through 12. “We have had campers from as far away as Wisconsin and as close as in our Eastern York School District,” Bachman said. “Most of them are from along the East Coast. Through our three previous work camps, we have had approximately 15 states represented.” Under adult supervision, the students complete work at the site while the residents are home, handling home repair ranging from repairing porches and steps to installing handicapped ramps and painting. “Due to liability reasons, we generally don’t work on a roof, and we don’t do landscaping type of work,” Bachman said. “The goal of the camp is to provide a permanent solution for a resident to allow them freedom and safety in their home. I would just encourage residents to fill out the application, and we will do a pre-site visit and let the resident know if it’s something that is done at the camp.” The camp operates under the organization Group Cares, which has been around since 1977, Bachman said. This will be the fourth local camp. “We created this co-sponsor group in 2017 for our first camp in 2018,” Bachman explained, noting that

the camp paused for a few years during the pandemic. “In general, it’s just a group of community residents that are interested in helping other community residents. We have people with a specific skill set that help in different committees.” So far, 160 campers are signed up for this coming summer. “ We ’ r e h o p i n g t h a t number remains or increases,” Bachman said. “Normally, we have had approximately 200 campers at each of our previous camps.” While the camp provides opportunities for campers to learn new skills, grow in their Christian faith and serve in their community, it’s also an opportunity for personal connection, Bachman said. The work is typically done from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the day, and it’s intentional that residents are encouraged to be home during the process. “Another key to the work camp is the relationships that are built between the resident and the campers,” Bachman said. “On many of our exit surveys, the residents talk about the relationships they have with the campers more than they talk about the work that was actually done on their home.” B achman encourages all qualified homeowners to apply for the program if they need work done at their home. “Workcamp has a lot of moving parts and a lot of community involvement,” he said. “One of the biggest challenges is to get applications from residents. You would think that would be one of the easiest things since we provide free home repair. I know there are people that are afraid to have young people come in to work on their homes. I can tell you from 15 work camps I’ve participated in that the work is always done with a lot of love and care.” Applications for home repairs must be completed by Feb. 28, 2027. longer. One of the trips had an 84-mile day in it.” W hile the boys navigated a climb up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y., the girls had to navigate traffic in Boston. “Each trip had its unique physical challenges,” Lee said. “ T here ’s also the mental challenge of staying focused, staying safe, not quitting and bringing a good attitude each day.” Riders ranged in age from 14 to 18, and Lee emphasized that they received much more out of the experience that just exercise. “ There’s the physical challenge of the rides, but there’s also the friendship that happens along the way,” he said. “There’s also the development of leadership, teamwork and other skills, as well as spiritual growth during the devotionals held each night. They get into some deep conversations.” To train for the Challenge Rides, the students begin riding in April for upward of 90 minutes a ride. On Saturdays, they ride for three to five hours. “By the time they get to the end of July and head out on the trips, they’re physically ready to do it,” Lee said. “ They do well on the Challenge Rides. The self-confidence they develop along the way really changes them. T hey ’re different people when they come home.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, founde d L ife c ycles 12 years ago. They wanted to provide opportunities for young people to take bike rides while also growing in faith and fellowship. Since its inception, the
program has served 549 boys and girls in Lancaster and York counties, who have ridden more than 600,000 miles. “That’s the distance to the moon and back and halfway to the moon again,” Lee said. F ro m A p r i l t h ro u g h mid-October, groups set out from locations throughout the county on weekday and Saturday rides. Lee explained that Lifecycles is for anyone who wants to try it. “They don’t have to make the team. If they show up, they’re on the team,” he said. “There’s no cost for anything. Everything is 100% free.” Participants can receive all the gear they need, and each ride includes a free hot meal. Participants are taught to ride safely in small groups, progressing at a pace that serves them, Lee said, and ride groups are separated by boys and girls as well as by strengths and abilities. “It’s an opportunity for youths to get out in the fresh air, make new friends and be supervised in a positive and encouraging environment,” he said. “They develop their skills at their own pace.” No experience with biking is required to join Lifecycles. “ We’ve taught kids to ride,” Lee said. “We have everyone from beginners to experts in our groups.” He encourages parents to consider signing their child up for the next season of Lifecycles, which will begin in the third week in April next year. “A person doesn’t have to

C o l u m b i a ’s a n n u a l Haunted Lantern Tours will be presented on Friday, Oct. 16, Saturday, Oct. 17, Sunday, Oct. 18, Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24. The theme this year is “Wright’s Ferry’s Legendaries.” Tours will run every half hour, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 8 p.m. on Sunday. Guests will be guided by lantern light on the one-hour tours. For nearly a decade, the Haunted Lantern Tours have invited audiences to experience local history in a different way. Set on the historic grounds of Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, the annual production combines live theater, historical re-enactment, and authentic Columbia history. In celebration of Columbia’s 300th anniversary, this year’s production will focus on individuals, both celebrated and nearly forgotten, who helped shape the community that would become Columbia. Among the featured histor ical f ig ures are John Wright and Susanna Wright, whose early
efforts helped transform a simple river crossing into what would eventually become Wright’s Ferry and, later, Columbia. Audiences will also meet businessman, philanthropist, and abolitionist Stephen Smith, whose life and contributions left a lasting mark on the community. Other subjects will include educators, physicians, and artists. Written and directed by Columbia native Sara Mimnall, “Wright’s Ferry’s Legendaries” is performed by a volunteer cast of local community actors. The production is presented by River town T heatre Productions, a nonprofit community theater dedicated to combining local history with live theatrical performance. Participants must be 13 years or older. A cash concession stand will be available to all patrons at the start of the tour. To purchase tickets, call Holly at 717-587-5368. There is a discount for groups of 10 or more people. To learn more, visit www.columbiahlt .com or www.facebook.com/ ColumbiaHLT or email hauntedlanterntour@ gmail.com.

One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “ We t r y to p ro m o te more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the causes that are important to people?” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s upcoming gift festival de-emphasizes material items and emphasizes experiences, altruism and char itable causes. This year’s 19th edition of the unique gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. T he event is free to attend, and all proceeds will
individuals and gifts made from repurposed materials. “There’s a wide range of items you can find there,” said Knepper. “I think because the world feels so overwhelming, giving gifts like that can feel like tangible steps in the right direction. The gift fair has a very altruistic, collaborative, community type of environment. It always lifts my spirits. One of my strengths is building connections, and the gift fair is the epitome of that. Nobody wants to reinvent wheels, and the gift fair helps build bridges.” More than 1,500 people are expected to attend Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s fair. In the past, the event has raised as much as $30,000 collectively for the participating nonprofits. “I think they’re people who are conscientious about how they live their lives,” said Knepper. “They like to help other people. They’re people with a wide range of interests. I think the gift fair inspires a lot of different people.” The gift fair is the only event that Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster sponsors throughout the year. “I really do love seeing people come together and make connections,” said Knepper. “I really love all the behind- the- scenes work throughout the year. It brings me a lot of joy. The gift fair lifts my spirits when I see all these people trying to help.” For additional information, go to www.giftsthat givehopelancaster.org.
