• Electric space heaters should be kept away from walls, curtains, and furniture. Many now feature tip-over safety features that will turn the unit off should it be tipped over. It is always advisable, however, to use a space heater on a level, sturdy surface that is away from any foot traffic. • All supplemental heating sources should be turned off or extinguished before leaving the house or going to bed. • Any stationary space heating equipment or HVAC system should be installed by professionals and inspected so that it adheres with local building codes. • Use safety screens in front of fireplaces to prevent sparks from escaping. • Make sure the damper is open every time a fire is lit. • Do not fill a heater with fuel or move it while it is hot, except when adding wood to a stove. • Cinders and ashes should be cleaned routinely from stoves and fireplaces and stored away from the home in a heat-safe container until cool. • Never position an electric heater next to a water source. • Extension cords should not be used unless absolutely necessary. The cords should be heavy duty and meet the draw of the heating unit. Also, cords should be run so they do not present a tripping hazard, and also so that they do not create a combustion hazard. • Children should not be allowed to touch or play near any heating appliances. Do not leave children or pets unattended in a room with an active fire or space heater. Before investing in a heating unit, homeowners should also consider adding more insulation to homes or caulking drafty windows and doors as a method to retaining warmth in their home. Whether out of necessity or just to provide an added measure of warmth to a home, many people use supplemental heating appliances during the winter. Emphasizing safety when using such devices is imperative.

home appeal [2] Winter 2014

When the weather begins to grow cold, individuals turn to supplemental forms of heat for a variety of reasons. The rising cost of home ownership, as well as escalating fuel prices, often set people on a search for the least expensive and most efficient ways to keep comfortable during the cold weather season. Space heaters, woodburning stoves, and fireplaces are among the more common and popular supplemental heating sources. The same heating sources that can be cost-effective and safe when used correctly can become hazardous when safety guidelines are not followed. Faulty or misused heating sources can lead to fires, injuries, property damage, and even death. To keep warm and stay safe this winter, homeowners should follow all safety guidelines that come with a supplemental heating device, as well as some simple steps, such as: • Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are in proper working order. Should a malfunction of a heating appliance occur or a fire start, a smoke alarm could be your first indicator of a problem. • Consider the use of a gate or another obstruction to keep children and pets several feet away from a space heater or another appliance that can easily be knocked over. • Never use fuel-burning appliances without proper room venting to the outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Fuel includes everything from wood to gas to oil. • Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in every level of the home. • Only use the fuel recommended by the product manufacturer. • When making a fire in a stove or fireplace, never use flammable liquids to start or accelerate the fire. • A wood-, pellet-, or coal-burning stove should be burned very hot at least twice a day for about 30 minutes to reduce the creosote buildup in the chimney or flue. • Chimneys should be professionally cleaned at the beginning of each use season to ensure there is nothing lodged within that can catch fire.

PREVENTING COLD-WEATHER CRISES:
tips for avoiding
Ice Dams Check where other sources of warm air could be entering the attic, such as from ventilation fans or recessed lighting fixtures. Weather stripping attic stairs and fixtures may prove a helpful solution. Keep in mind that minimizing heat loss through the attic will also increase a home’s energy efficiency, reducing heating bills and providing a more comfortable indoor environment. Ensuring cool air can flow through the attic is another way to reduce the temperature in this space. Ventilation systems can be installed to properly air out an attic. In most homes, a louvered window or gable vent in the attic is not adequate to provide proper air flow. Consult with a professional about upgrading an attic ventilation system. By taking a few measures to improve insulation, roofing, and ventilation, homeowners can greatly reduce the likelihood of water damage from ice dam formation.

The cold weather brings with it many potential dangers. For homeowners, ice dams are one situation that could prove a formidable foe. Under normal circumstances, gutters and downspouts are in place on a home to ensure water runoff from the roof makes its way down and away from the structure. During the winter months, however, snow accumulation on the roof may melt atop surfaces of the roof that are warmed by an underlying attic. This snowmelt can then drip down to the end of the roof and refreeze in areas where there is less surface warmth. Eventually, a block of ice called an ice dam may form over the gutter or at the edge of it, preventing further roof runoff from properly draining. Then, all it takes is a trickle of melted snow to pool up and leak back under roofing shingles and into the home to cause issues such as rot or mold. Preventing ice dams takes some work and financial investment on the part of the homeowner. Expending effort and paying attention ahead of time, though, can help to ward off major structural damage down the line. First of all, homeowners should keep gutters clean of debris. Unobstructed gutters will not become clogged as easily and will be less prone to forming ice dams. The main form of defense, however, starts with a quality roof. Because most homeowners do not regularly inspect their roofs, the roof can be an easy place for contractors to skimp. A quality roofer will ensure that homes in snowy areas have the following components: an ice and water barrier installed on all roof edges and over all valleys, proper flashing, rolled asphalt underlayment over the entire roof, and quality roofing shingles with the right overlap. Another option to consider in areas of heavy snowfall is a metal roof. The slippery roof causes snow and ice to slide off. Special features at the end of a metal roof break up the snow before it falls, preventing large, heavy piles of snow from causing injury when dropping to the ground. In addition to maintaining the quality of their roof, homeowners must also provide adequate attic ventilation and insulation to cut down on ice dam problems. After all, it is the warm air from the attic that melts the snow collected on the roof. A cooler attic temperature might lead to less melted snow and, as a result, less water seepage as well. Investigate the R-value of insulation products before use and install the one that will meet the needs in the home and geographic area.
Roof Care Reminders S830158
A snow-covered landscape can be a picturesque sight. A roof covered in snow, however, is something no homeowner can afford to marvel at. When heavy snowfall arrives, homeowners should do their best to safely clear their roofs. When considering clearing the roof, keep in mind the following safety tips: f A snow rake – a metal device on a telescoping pole that can be extended to drag snow off of the roof – is usually effective when clearing steep-pitched surfaces. f Use an extension ladder to reach taller parts of the roof. A second person should remain below to steady the ladder and ensure it does not tip over on a slick surface. f Do not climb up on the roof directly and shovel the snow off. The added weight of a person may be all that is needed to cause a roof to collapse. f Snow-covered surfaces, whether walkways or lawns, as well as ladders used outdoors, can be slippery. Extra caution should be exercise. f Homeowners who do not feel secure removing snow from the roof can hire a professional service to do so. Just be sure the service is properly licensed and insured.
