When planting shade trees, homeowners will need to decide on the type of tree –
deciduous or evergreen. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees c an be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm. But evergreens also can be beneficial in winter by blocking wind, potentially preventing cold air from making its way into a home through cracks in walls or around windows. When planting shade trees, techniques vary depending on which type of tree homeowners ultimately choose to plant.

Planting evergreens to block wind is known as “windbreaking,” which lowers the wind chill near a home. Wind also can be directed in a way that cools a home in summer. But these benefits can only be realized when evergreens are strategically planted. · Location, location, location. The DOE advises planting evergreen trees to the north and northwest of the home to stop wind. In addition, for homeowners to get the most bang for their windbreaking buck, the distance between the home and windbreak should be two to five times the height of the mature tree. · Plant trees on either side of the house. very winter you will catch me dreaming about the days of spring. Cabin fever is knocking at my door, and I’m ready to let the fresh air in. A practice that has been ongoing for centuries is spring cleaning. Originally the act of spring cleaning was put in place for those of us living in frigid climates during the winter months. The idea is once warmer weather rolls in, we open our windows and freshen up our stuffy homes from the last memories of winter. There are many benefits to having a clean home all year round, but spring brings a different perspective. Many of us deal with illness during the colder months. Germs linger, so it is important to do a deep cleaning to avoid making others sick. A good spring clean can also help you avoid allergy symptoms, according to a study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI). Removing allergens from the home can make you feel healthier, especially at a time when allergies are on the rise. Lastly, doing a deep clean can reduce your stress. It has been scientifically proven that order and cleanliness can only make you happier. Imagine coming home to a freshly cleaned home, where everything has a place. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? A fresh start in a new season sounds like a great way to kick off spring!
So now that I’ve convinced you to spring clean, how do you start? Here is a short, manageable list to walk you through the process: Make a game plan. Will spring cleaning be done over the course of a few weeks or in a weekend? Which rooms are top priority? • Gather materials. • Start by removing clutter from each room. Purge unwanted or unused items. • Work from the top down. Don’t forget about the ceilings, walls, fans, and vents. • Wash windows inside and out. • Dust and clean all surfaces. • Wash curtains, blankets, bedding, mattresses, and pillows. • Move furniture and vacuum. • Dust and wash baseboards. • Steam clean carpets, rugs, and furniture. It may seem like a big undertaking, but anyone who has done a good spring cleaning will tell you that once your home is deep cleaned, you’ll notice an instant lift in your mood.
