he said. “It took about two years to find an organization to support my dream of establishing a group.” Sheffer partnered with Schreiber to launch its modern band program, including the UnSinkables, in October 2024. The inclusive music program uses popular styles like rock, pop, hip-hop, and rhythm and blues to teach realworld musical skills. Participants learn to play instruments of their own choosing, such as guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals. The UnSinkables, which began with four members and has grown to eight, practice together for an hour each week. While some group members can do a bit of music reading, Sheffer uses strategies such as pictures, letters and numbers to help simplify the learning process.

Ski Tunes Ski Shop is back in business. The shop that served local skiers and snowboarders for more than three decades recently reopened after a brief hiatus, with founder Grant Shultz’s son, Derek, now carrying on his family’s legacy. Derek Shultz shares his father’s love for hitting the slopes, as well as his approach of partnering with schools and ski clubs to make skiing more accessible and affordable for local families. Ski Tunes, located at 2531 Ironville Pike, Columbia, held its grand reopening on Oct. 15. “ We’re excited to welcome back longtime customers and introduce a new generation to the sport,” Derek said. “We want to help families find ways to break through some of the cost barriers involved with skiing. Getting more people out on the hill is our goal.” In 1991, Grant and his wife, Lynn, opened Ski Tunes in the lower level of their renovated 1860s barn. Grant taught in the Hempfield School District, where he led the ski club and tuned students’ skis in hopes of sharing the joy of skiing with others. Gradually, as word spread in the skiing community, his small tune-up shop grew into a full-fledged business, offering sales, custom fittings, repairs and full-service ski and snowboard support. “Growing up, I watched my dad help customers, tune skis

UnSinkables Plan Fun and Inspiring Free Concert BY MARY BETH BUDNYK

f you need proof that the UnSinkables can do anything, look at what the band members have already accomplished together. The UnSinkables, a band supported by the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, features teenagers and young adults with different abilities who play popular music, including selections from “The Greatest Showman,” One Direction and Lady Gaga. Most members had no musical experience before joining the band. The UnSinkables will perform at the Celebrate Abilities Concert, Saturday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m., at Saint James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Nathan Sheffer, the band’s founder and

coach, promises a fun and inspiring concert, which is free and open to the public. “The band members have gone from not being able to play instruments to performing for audiences of 500 people,” he said. “That’s pretty impressive.” The UnSinkables began when Sheffer was looking for a doctoral research project that combined his passions for music education and working with individuals who have differences in abilities. While opportunities to explore music are abundant in early childhood, it becomes increasingly challenging for older students who haven’t yet picked up an instrument, he said. “For people with differences in abilities, the opportunities are especially few and far between,”

While Sheffer did not start the Unsinkables with intentions to perform, people who heard the band practice began inquiring about shows. The group first performed at Schreiber’s annual gala, for an audience of about 500 people. “Getting up to perform is not easy, but they support one another,” he said. “Our goal is not a perfect performance. Day s pr i n g C h r i s t i a n Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims on Friday, Nov. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school. Guests will select a specific time slot for a living history walk-through tour that will take about one hour. Tours will depart every 10 minutes, and registration is required. This live re-enactment is an outreach to the community designed to tell the true story of the Pilgrims based upon primary sources, including the or ig inal manuscript recorded by William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth settlement. T hanksg iving E xposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul and onward. Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English, and Martin Luther and his 95 theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists. Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland, and their heroic voyage to the New World. Thanksgiving Exposed seeks to demonstrate how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America. At the end of the tour, guests will have time to ask questions and enjoy

light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. For reservations, visit www.dayspring christian.com. Some time slots fill quickly, and a waitlist will be available when slots begin to fill up. For more information, call the school at 717-285-2000.

Band members vote on the music they most want to learn. “I wanted to give them an authentic experience of playing music they know and want to play,” he said. “My job is to make the music accessible. Right now we’re working on ‘Lean on Me’ and ‘What a Wonderful World.’” Besides having fun and learning to play music, the program helps band members build confidence, teamwork and social skills, all while experiencing the pride of performing as part of a group. The UnSinkables keep in regular touch with each other through a texting app, and the band is always accepting new members. “We aim to create a sense of belonging,” Sheffer said. “It’s very much meant to teach a skill they can use and also give them time to build a community with each other.” Like the UnSinkables, Schreiber ’s music programs continue to grow. Come experience the CB Burkholder Homes difference for yourself! “CB Burkholder Homes made our first home -buying experience incredibly easy! Their townhomes are full of character and we ’ve loved every minute of living here. Don was always available and super helpful with any questions we had along the way. One of the Burkholder brothers/owners showed up for the final walkthrough to make sure everything met our expectations, which really meant a lot. Everyone we worked with was kind and professional and we are so excited to watch our neighborhood grow!” M&J
