Through his stage productions of “Box Out Bullying,” Jeremy Rubenstein has shared his message about bullying across the country and positively impacted thousands of lives. Now, it seems that the next logical step in Rubenstein’s 18-year journey of inspiration would be to bring that message home to Lancaster County. “I think this is something that everybody has a story with,” said Rubenstein, who has backgrounds in education, theater and basketball. “They’ve been bullied, they’ve witnessed bullying or they’ve (been bullies) themselves. Children are going to mimic the people See Bullying pg 5 Actors perform a version of “Box Out Bullying.”

Korean War

BY MARY BETH BUDNYK

T he Korean War is often called “the Forgotten War.” This Veterans Day, a Hempfield veteran will share his story to help keep memories of the conflict alive. Paul Cunningham, a Korean War veteran and former president of the national Korean War Veterans Association, will speak on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Hempfield United Methodist Church, 3050 Marietta Ave, Lancaster. The program, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 1 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Cunningham, a L ancaster native and current resident of East Hempfield Township, served in Korea from September 1950 to February 1952. He will share his reflections on the war and South Korea today, offering a personal perspective on the conflict and its lasting impact. “I am looking forward to meeting with members of Hempfield United Methodist Church this Veterans Day,” he said. “In my remarks, I plan to review the chronology of events leading up to the outbreak of the Korean War and my experience in the period of 1950 to 1952.” After graduating from McCaskey High School in 1948, Cunningham enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, training as a radar repairman with the 502nd Tactical Control Group, Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. When he deployed to Korea, he was 20 years old, and it was his first time leaving the United States. See Veterans pg 3

Siloam Ethiopia, a local faithbased nonprofit organization, will host the 2026 Ethiopian Food Fundraiser Lunch Gala: “Keep Hope & Healing Alive” on Saturday, Nov. 14. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Word of Life Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville. Demeke Getahun, a senior pastor at the church, and his wife, Wegayehu Ketema, founded Siloam Ethiopia in 2017. The organization delivers essential medical care, shelter, education and community support to vulnerable populations in Harar, Ethiopia. “It’s really from the heart that it started,” Getahun said. “That’s why

nine years after we started, we are still going. We are always trusting the Lord, and we have never failed.” Families and people of all ages are welcome to attend the luncheon, which will feature an Ethiopian buffet of vegetarian, lentil and meat dishes served with traditional injera bread, as well as a coffee ceremony, ministry presentation and musical fellowship. Curbside pickup of takeout meals will also be available. Proceeds from the event will support Siloam’s free medical clinic and school clinic services in Harar. The areas of greatest need include salaries for locally hired providers and nurses, laboratory and medical supplies, and prescription medications, said Getahun, who visits Harar two or three times each year. Siloam operates a full-time clinic serving the Harar community, which treats 800 people per month, at zero cost to patients and their families. The nonprofit also has established clinics in multiple schools to bring

health care directly to students. “Patients don’t pay for any thing ,” from clean clothing to lab tests and m e d i c at i o n s , G e t a h u n said. “Those working at the clinic have a good heart to serve other people.” In addition to medical services, Siloam recently purchased a house that now serves as a safe and permanent home for eight girls ages 8 to 18. The organization also has dug wells at local schools - improving access to clean water for students and surrounding communities - and provides financial assistance to elderly members of the community who are in need of support. As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, Getahun said generous support from the Lancaster com-

munity will enable Siloam to continue to expand its programs and make an even greater impact in Harar. The organization’s future plans include building a pharmacy to distribute necessary medications directly to patients, improving continuity of care and reducing barriers to treatment. “Medications are very expensive,” he said. “Now we want to build a pharmacy to provide good support for people who need it. We can make a difference in everybody’s life.” Tickets for the gala may be purchased in advance or at the event. Bullying from pg 1 love to do more shows in Lancaster. “Do people know about this?” added Rubenstein. “We could definitely do a better job of letting people know about this. I’m very careful about the product we put forward. These are kids; they’re very impressionable. I wish they did know about me. People who have us once keeping on booking us year after year.” The stage presentations of “Box Out Bullying” revolve around characters and cousins Tom and Jerry and are designed to identify what constitutes bullying and what doesn’t. The message is clear, but room is left for creative interpretation. “There’s a script, and the plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tom and Jerry,” said Rubenstein. “There’s no fourth wall in the show, and when the actors come out, they’re continuously interacting with the audience. There’s a box in the middle of the stage; it has all the answers to bullying inside of it, but it’s locked. With each lesson learned, a lock pops off the box. When the audience figures it out, the box will open and inside is the answer. “You’ve got to see the

show to find out the answer,” Rubenstein continued. “It’s a very big box, but the answer is very small, and it’s been in front of the audience the whole time. There’s a difference between accidents and conflicts and bullying. We want to give students different tools while teaching them grit and resilience.” Rubenstein is a 2002 graduate of Manheim Township and currently resides in Manheim Township with his growing family. In 2025, Rubenstein received the Manheim Township School District’s Distinguished Alumni award. “We know that bullying doesn’t just affect the school but also the community,” said Rubenstein. “When I started this in 2008, bullying might have been just a whisper. People liked that it was research-based. Now, we are addressing this for the high school level. We’re developing new curriculum. We’re trying to build on this even more. We’d like to be well known. I’m very optimistic with how this is going. The message is there is hope. “This is still a local story,” Rubenstein concluded. For additional information, go to www.boxout bullying.com.

they love. With something as serious as bullying, we can’t have mixed messages. One of the messages we teach is that even people who exhibit bullying behavior need help too. We want to create empathy. This is something that’s full of hope.” Rubenstein and his small traveling troupe, which includes two versatile actors, present versions of “Box Out Bullying” about 300 times annually, in places like California, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, Utah and Nashville. The 45-minute educational and entertaining presentations are tailored to their audiences and performed at elementary schools, middle schools, theaters, performing arts centers and community centers. But “Box Out Bullying” has only been staged a handful of times in Lancaster County, most recently in East Earl in September of 2024. “Not as many as I’d like,” said Rubenstein, when asked about the number of times his message has been presented locally. “The issues kids are facing here in Lancaster aren’t unique. Join us for our CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The holiday season is just around the corner, making it a great time to get a head start on Christmas shopping while enjoying a day of food, fellowship and community spirit. The Candy Cane Lane Christmas Bazaar will bring together local vendors, homemade treats and tasty meals, offering shoppers a chance to discover unique gifts and support a local church at the same time. The event will be held at Kinderhook Church, 560 Kinderhook Road, Columbi a , from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. “This is a bazaar to raise money for our church,” said Cathie Musser, fundraising committee chair. “There will be food available for purchase. There will also be a silent auction of gift baskets and 20 different small business owners selling merchandise for Christmas gifts.” This is the fourth year for the event. With a variety of vendors gathered under one roof, shoppers will have an opportunity to browse for gifts for family members and friends while also finding a few things for themselves. The selection of merchandise will include both items from familiar direct-sales businesses, such as Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple and

Scentsy, along with handcrafted goods made by local artisans. Whether shoppers are looking for something decorative, a useful gift or a little something to tuck into a Christmas stocking, the bazaar will offer a chance to explore different options in one stop. Both breakfast and lunch will be available for shoppers, and homemade chicken corn noodle soup will be sold to enjoy on-site or to take home. A bake sale will feature homemade cookies, cakes and more. Proceeds from Candy Cane Lane will support the operations and mission of Kinderhook Church. The church holds worship ser vices at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Musser encourages everyone to consider visiting Candy Cane Lane for a day of shopping, fun and fellowship. “Please come and support Kinderhook Church while starting your Christmas shopping for your friends and loved ones,” she said. Some vendors will accept electronic payments, but shoppers should br ing cash for food, baked goods and take-home soup. For more information, search for “Kinderhook E.C. Church” on Facebook or visit https://kinder hookec.com.
