Wayside Welcomes Neighbors to Trunk ’n Treat MARY BETH BUDNYK
G
et into the seasonal spirit at Wayside Presbyterian Church’s annual Trunk ’n Treat Festival, which will offer a safe, family-friendly alternative to traditional Halloween festivities. The community is invited to attend the free event, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville. Church members will decorate their cars, park in the lower parking lot - which will be closed to traffic - and open their trunks to pass out candy or treats. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Fritz said Wayside has hosted the Trunk ’n Treat each October since 2013, offering a less-spooky way of welcoming neighbors to celebrate the season together. While community members of all ages are welcome,

onto our premises for fun and fellowship,” said Fritz, who traditionally greets event attendees while wearing a seasonal costume. “It’s an alternative to the scary parts
of our cultural Halloween and an opportunity to show how much fun we have here at Wayside.” The Trunk ’n Treat will also feature a games area hosted by the See Wayside pg 5

Meta glasses do not help those with vision loss see better. Meta glasses are smart glasses that assist the visually impaired to overcome their challenges in alternate ways, navigate their worlds more effectively and make their lives better. “Technology can be a very helpful tool,” said Taylor Newswanger, who’s been
a low vision occupational therapist at VisionCorps for 10 years. “There are a lot of low-tech things that can be helpful. But (VisionCorps is) not just about technology. We’re about people and their needs.” VisionCor ps, which is located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, does not sell meta glasses - they are available at the offices of local eye doctors and through large retailers like Amazon. A VisionCorps client uses Meta glasses to help

But VisionCorps does offer training, advice and consultations about the practical applications and the uses of meta glasses. Newswanger also periodically presents meta glasses as a topic in VisionCorps’ quarterly webinar series VC Presents, which is currently available on www.youtube.com. “Meta glasses work with AI; it’s a camera and a phone,” said Newswanger. “It’s all auditory. The glasses connect to smart phones or tablets, where it gets information. It’s connecting to the internet, and it’s giving you that information. It’s like having Siri or Alexa on your face, and when it’s on your face, it can travel with you.” “You can tell the glasses to read a piece of paper for you,”
continued Newswanger. “It can use GPS or help you navigate a crosswalk. This is a tool that can help you be more independent; it’s not taking independence away. It’s saying that because you can’t do it with your eyes, the glasses can do it for you.” The current form of meta glasses employs updated AI technology. Over the past two years, VisionCorps has assisted more than 100 meta glasses users. “We have people coming in and wanting to try them,” said Newswanger, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “We want them to be clients and to meet with someone from our occupational team. We don’t sell the glasses, but we can help them find vendors, and they can come back and we will help train them

with their glasses.” According to VisionCorps, there are nearly 5,000 adults in Lancaster County living with vision loss, and of those adults, 5.4% are over age 65. “(Meta glasses are) popular because they’re affordable,” said Newswanger. “Unfortunately, insurance does not view any visual aid as a necessity. It can be easy to use; hands-free is definitely nice, and they’re very stylish. There can be some scary things about AI, but Meta has put privacy features in place. It’s about teaching people how to be smart with AI. We teach you what not to do with them so they can continue to be used for good.” Meta glasses are also the perfect example of the role that VisionCorps plays in the Lancaster County community.
“We just want as many people as possible (to) be aware that vision loss is a difficult journey,” said Newswanger. “It can be scary, but we want to provide guidance so they can be independent on that journey. Vision loss is an age-related disease. Older people didn’t grow up with technology, and sometimes they’re not open to technology. But even if you’re older, you can use it. A lot of our younger clients find it’s really helpful. There are a lot of cool features, and it’s an aid to things.” VisionCorps’ next VC Presents webinar is titled “Holiday Kitchen Confidence: Cooking and Baking With Vision Loss,” and it will initially be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. Students across Lancaster County will benefit from a re cent s cho ol supply drive organized by the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, which collected school supplies to support local students and families. The donated materials will be distributed to Lancaster County school districts through LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13), helping the 16 districts address ongoing student needs throughout the school year. While school supplies are often associated with the start of the academic year, districts frequently welcome new students and families throughout the year. The supplies will provide a readily available resource for students who enroll midyear or face chal-
lenges accessing necessary classroom materials. IU13’s Early Childhood and Special Education Services (ECSES) team will sort the donated materials before making them available through the District Special Education Administrators’ network and the District Social Workers’ Cohort. School districts will then identify local needs and distribute supplies directly to students and families. The effort ref lects a commitment to supporting students and reducing barriers that can impact educational success. By making these supplies available throughout the year, local schools will be better equipped to meet emerging student needs and provide timely support to families.
Marking the conclusion of the school supply drive were (from left) Matt Stem, executive director of Lancaster-Lebanon IU13; Natalie Littlehale, youth aid panel coordinator and grant coordinator with the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office; Michele Golay, restitution advocate with the DA’s office; Travis Anderson, assistant district attorney with the DA’s office; and Jeremy Sweigart, ECSES director for early childhood for IU13. Wayside from pg 1 church’s family ministry team. Snacks and hot dogs will be served as long as supplies last. Wayside’s praise band, Grace Notes, will perform live, seasonal music, and magician Erick Hershey will make a special appearance. Deb Kereczman, outreach event coordinator, said Wayside members enjoy working together to host the event and seeing the church come alive as they welcome their neighbors. The Trunk ’n Treat gives people of all ages a chance to participate, as trunk hosts, musicians, welcome team members, cooks and servers. The church’s older youth help out by hosting games for younger children. “It’s all about opening our doors and welcoming our neighbors,” she said. “There’s a real sense of joy and fellowship, and I think our members love seeing the church as a place where people feel comfortable, welcomed and connected.” Local families appreciate that the Trunk ’n Treat is a free, welcoming and genuinely community-focused event, she said. Children
enjoy a safe, fun place to celebrate Halloween, while their parents and grandparents appreciate an opportunity to meet people and connect with the church. “We’re simply opening our doors (or trunks!), welcoming our neighbors and creating a fun evening for everyone,” Kereczman said. “I think people can feel that there’s a lot of heart behind it.” She notes that to keep the Trunk ’n Treat safe for everyone, teal-colored buckets will offer special treats for children with food allergies or sensitivities. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be moved inside the church. Families may shorten their wait time at the event by registering in advance at https://waysidepc.org/ events/tr unk-n- treat . Wayside is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and neighbors also are invited to visit the church to enjoy regular services and activities for children and families. For more information, call 717-898-1551 or visit https://waysidepc.org.

Scouting America Group to Present Award The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Scouting America, will present the 38th Distinguished Citizen Award to James W. Saxton, chairman and co-founder of Saxton & Stump, in recognition of his leadership, philanthropy, and lasting impact across Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Saxton, an Eagle Scout, will be honored at the annual Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 5 p.m. at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of the Scout Oath and Law through their professional achievements, community involvement, and commitment to serving others. As co-founder of Saxton & Stump, Saxton has helped lead the firm’s growth into a multistate organization with 11 offices and a network of affiliated companies. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he has demonstrated a commitment to community service through leadership roles with organizations such as the Lancaster YMCA and its foundation. Alongside his wife, Sally, he has been recognized with honors, including the Excellence in Philanthropy Award and Philanthropist of the Year. This year’s event will also feature Lt. Col. Christopher Fogt - who is a three-time Olympian, an Olympic silver medalist, an Eagle Scout, and the head coach

skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washing ton, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian b o r d e r, c o v e r i n g 3 2 4 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut north to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes longer. One of the trips had an 84-mile day in it.” W hile the boys navigated a climb up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y., the girls had to navigate traffic in Boston. “Each trip had its unique physical challenges,” Lee said. “ T here ’s also the mental challenge of staying focused, staying safe, not quitting and bringing a good attitude each day.” Riders ranged in age from 14 to 18, and Lee emphasized that they received much more out of the expe-
cycles is for anyone who wants to try it. “They don’t have to make the team. If they show up, they’re on the team,” he said. “There’s no cost for anything. Ever ything is 100% free.” Participants can receive all the gear they need, and each ride includes a free hot meal. Participants are taught to ride safely in small groups, progressing at a pace that serves them, Lee said, and ride groups are separated by boys and girls as well as by strengths and abilities. “ I t ’s a n o p p or t u n i t y for youths to get out in the fresh air, make new friends and be supervised in a positive and encouraging environment,” he said. “They develop their skills at their own pace.” No experience with biking is required to join Lifecycles. “ We’ve taught kids to ride,” Lee said. “We have everyone from beginners to experts in our groups.” He encourages parents to consider signing their c h i l d u p fo r t h e n e x t season of Lifecycles, which will begin in the third week in April next year. “A person doesn’t have to belong to a church, doesn’t have to come in with a relationship with Jesus, but they are going to hear about it ,” L ee said. “If you want your child to have this outdoor adventure experience with a faith-based core, that’s what we do.” To lear n more about Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.
