Owl Prowl Offers Fun Look at Creatures of the Night

Corey Aspril has always loved stories, but he didn’t always believe in ghosts. That all changed during a late-night visit to the Gettysburg battlefield.

Aspril is now a believer - so much so that he enjoys sharing ghost stories with other people.

He will present “Hauntings of East Petersburg and Lancaster County” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, as part of the East Petersburg Historical Society’s speaker series. The talk will be held at the East Petersburg Community Center, 6051 Pine St. Aspril, a lifelong resident of Lancaster County, grew up avidly reading books and watching movies. Although he watched ghost-hunting shows on TV, he didn’t necessarily believe everything he saw.

“Back then you could probably label me as a nonbeliever,” he said. “Then I had a couple of things happen that pushed me more in the other direction.”

About 10 years ago, Aspril and a friend visited the Gettysburg battlefield at night and took a few photos. One of the images showed what he describes as an apparition with a ghostly gray pallor, wearing a cavalry uniform. Aspril thought maybe the figure was a statue.

He returned to the same spot on the battlefield during the day, but there was no statue.

That was about all the convincing he needed. His interest piqued, he began researching paranormal happenings, especially in Lancaster County. He See Hauntings pg 2

started a YouTube channel to share some of what he learned about local folklore, legends and ghost stories.

Aspril contacted local historical societies for more information. He connected with East Petersburg Historical Society president Samuel Maurer IV, who invited him to share some of his findings with the community in April 2025.

“We had a full house, and several attendees shared their own experiences,” Maurer said. “Following these stories, the audience requested that we schedule Corey again.”

One local resident mentioned hearing footsteps upstairs in her home. When she investigated, she saw nothing, but she felt a cold spot in the hallway, while her dog stared at the ceiling. She later learned that a woman had passed away in the house, and she believes it was her spirit. Another attendee recalled seeing a woman in a white dress looking at a book in the narthex of a local church. The woman vanished a moment later.

Aspril plans to tell some of the area’s more famous ghost stor ies, such as those involving the Gonder Mansion in Strasburg and the Hans Graf Cemetery near Marietta. However, he will focus primarily on sharing more unique tales that people may never have heard.

“I think a lot of people get interested in the paranormal because they want to know if there is life after death,” he said. “It can be exciting to think that maybe there is a world beyond this world that we don’t know about and more to life than what we can see.”

As for whether you believe the ghost stories, well, that’s up to you.

LCAA Posts 90/90 Challenge The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has issued a call for artists to participate in the 90/90 Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10. The event is planned in celebration of LCAA’s 90th anniversary.

Ar tists will be challenged to complete an artwork of their choice in 90 minutes or less. There will be six sessions over the two days.

Fisher is in the process of restoring the dungeon.

He’s ready to install a new f loor but first wants to finalize plans to remove plaster that covers the original brick walls.

Fisher is fairly certain the dungeon is haunted, and he recalled an experience a few years ago when he was being interviewed in one of the cells for a local television station.

While Fisher, the cameraman and the reporter were in the former solitary confinement space, the heavy door to the cell began to close on its own.

“There’s no draft down there to move it,” he said.

“I didn’t know what it was that was causing that.”

A second Fright Night will be held on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31, also at the Market House.

A l l t h i n g s s p o o k y, including a local legend, will be the focus of the Columbia Albatwitch Harvest Festival and two upcoming Fright Nights happening in Columbia.

The festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, will be held at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St. Speakers, vendors and activities will focus on cr yptids, including the Albatwitch, a small, furry creature who resembles a baby Bigfoot and loves to eat apples.

Sponsored by the Columbia Borough Parks and Recreation department , the festival will feature fun for people of all ages.

Presenters will include Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival and the Fright Nights; Stacey Leigh and Jason Darden; Rissa Miller and Lon Strickler; and Gwendolyn Purcell.

“We’ll have four bands playing throughout the day,” Fisher said, including the Kracker Beez, Appaloosa Way, Boundaries Lounge Jam and Marny Klein. “ We’ll have food trucks and craft vendors, too.”

Food and drinks available for purchas e w ill range from burgers and fries to lemonade, pizza and empanadas. “ The festival will be a day of fun, with games for kids and something f o r e v e r y o n e ,” F i s h e r said. “You can come and listen to the lectures, walk around and visit the vendors, get something to eat and listen to music by the river.”

His fascination with the unexplained began when he was 7 and saw a man standing outside his bedroom at his grandparents’ home. He assumed it was his grandfather, but the next morning his grandmother told him his Pap hadn’t been there. Years later, Fisher learned his sister had seen the same figure.

A s he grew older, Fisher’s interest continued, eventually leading him to collect stories of unexplained encounters from people in Columbia, Wrightsville, Marietta, Bainbridge and surrounding communities.

Those stories were published in his book “Ghosts of the River Towns,” from w h i c h h e w i l l re a d a t the Albatwitch Har vest Festival.

He’s currently working on another book focused on stories about ghosts of Lancaster County.

Fisher acknowledged there is another event to celebrate the region’s Bigfoot, Albatwich Day, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Wrightsville.

He hopes people will go to both events.

“This is not about competing with the other festival,” he said. “When that one moved to Wrightsville, I got so many requests to bring it back to Columbia.

This way, people can enjoy both festivals.”

After the Columbia festival, Fisher will host the first of two Fright Nights at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

He will read from his book at the event, and tours of the dungeon beneath the market will be offered.

They’ll also take a closer look at mounted specimens of several Pennsylvania owl species then examine a pellet , or undigested food, that offers a glimpse into an owl’s diet. “ We search for tiny bones and other clues that help us determine what the owl had for dinner,” Maser said. “It is always fascinating to see how excited both kids and adults get about this part of the program.”

Participants then will take a short walk away from the pavilion and spend some time quietly listening for owls that live in or near the lake. They will use owl calls to try to attract the creatures.

TechLink was recently awarded a $280,000 PA sm a r t g ra nt by t he Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to develop fiber optic instructional labs. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center is among the members of TechLink, a consortium of nine technical schools focused on expanding career and technical education.

The goal for the new fiber optic instructional labs is to significantly expand hands-on fiber optic training opportunities in southcentral Pennsylvania, with the capacity to ser ve approximately 400 students annually. The PAsmart grant designated for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives s t e m m i n g f ro m t h e s e funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries.

Smith will explore the complex and often contradictory ways Americans have understood freedom, equality, and citizenship from the Revolution through Reconstruction.

Drawing connections between Pennsylvania’s histor y and the larger American story, the program will challenge the notion that there is - or ever has been - a single American experience.

The program will include a question-and-answer session, and signed copies of Smith’s “How the Word Is Passed” will be available for purchase from Pocket Books.

Smith is the author of the narrative nonfiction book “How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America,” winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism, and the Stowe Prize. The New York Times named it one of the 10 best books of 2021. With Sonja Cherry-Paul, Smith adapted the book for young readers in 2025.

He is also the author of the poetry collection “Above Ground” and the award-winning “Counting Descent.” His forthcoming nonfiction book , “Just Beneath the Soil,” explores how World War II is remembered around the world; the book is scheduled for publication in May 2027.

T he Pe n n s y l va n i a Department of Military a n d Ve te ra n s A f f a i r s (DMVA) has announced that its Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its first session of 2027, which will begin in January. A cornerstone of DMVA’s outreach, KSCA seeks to help teens who are in jeopardy of not graduating on time or dropping out of school. The program provides teens with a second chance at obtaining their basic education.

KSCA is centered around the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program’s core components: leadership, self-discipline, job skills, health and hygiene, values of community service and civic duty, physical fitness, and responsibility to build a better life.

There is no tuition cost to attend, and meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. To meet growing demand for the program, the 2026-27 state budget increased funding for KSCA by $80,000. The December 2025 graduating class was the largest KSCA class to date with 75 graduates, and enrollment is expected to grow to more than 100 cadets in the coming years.

KSCA is open to 16- to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, be free of felony convictions, and voluntarily commit to the program.

Scout Organization Honors Volunteers The Susquehanna District of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council recently presented the 2026 District Awards of Merit to two volunteers. The honorees are Chad Cauler of Pack 19 and Troop 56 in Strasburg and Jonathan Kurau of Pack 58 and Troop 58 in Willow Street.

The District Award of Merit recognizes registered Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level and who make a significant impact on the success of Scouting beyond their own unit.

Recipients are selected by a committee of their peers based on their dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving youths.

Cauler joined Cub Scout Pack 19 as an adult leader when his youngest son started the program in 2012. He has since served

as Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster, and he currently serves on the Pack Committee. Since 2016, Chad has held the position of Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 56, and he has been instrumental in planning and leading several National High Adventure

treks with the troop. Outside of Scouting, Cauler is a junior high school technology education teacher and coaches youth and high school soccer.

Kurau began his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1998, later

serving as an adult leader with Troop 58 from 2000 to 2003. After returning to the program when his children became involved, Kurau has served Pack 58 in several roles, including parent coordinator, committee chair, and Cubmaster, a position he still holds. In 2018, he reconnected with Troop 58 as an Assistant Scoutmaster, and he has been Scoutmaster since 2022. Drawing on the lessons he learned as an Eagle Scout, he is dedicated to giving back to Scouting and to his community.

Outside of Scouting, Kurau is a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where he serves on the church council.

Church in Lancaster and officially began its mission to build affordable homes, community, and hope on Oct. 1, 1986. The Lancaster and Lebanon Habitat affiliates merged in 2016 to form L ancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of four decades, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has built 300 homes, enabled hundreds of people to become first-time homebuyers, served more than 330 families, and worked alongside thousands of volunteers, donors, and community partners.

Notable achievements in the organization’s history include the completion of the Emerald Valley Build - 70 new homes in the southwest corner of Lancaster city; the renovation of the Wooden Nickel

Lancaster Capital Day is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. With assistance from nearly 100 volunteers, the event is being produced by nonprofit Keystone Events Project, which has secured the blessings of more than 30 sponsors, public officials and the city of Lancaster. “(Lancaster being America’s capital for a day) is a local claim to fame,” said Austin.

“It was really important for us to be on an historic footprint of where history happened. Capital Day has never been celebrated quite like this. There was a desire to celebrate it in our own way.

I think it’s really cool to look at American history through a Lancaster lens.”

That Saturday’s street fair buzz will be highlighted by food trucks, craft vendors, historical reflections, artists, information about services from local nonprofits and all-day music performed by musicians on both a main stage and at the Fulton Theatre. Local brick-andmortars like Lancaster Central Market will be offering extended business hours and specials.

During the festivities, Lancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo will address the gathering.

“People love coming out, having good food, shopping and hearing good music,” said Austin. “It’s things we love about our community.

“It’s a really great time of the year to do festivals,” said Austin. “It’s a Saturday in September, and it’s a market day. There are going to be a lot of reasons to come downtown. I think we’ll be attracting a lot of the county crowd, and we’re ready for it. The stage is set for a big event.”

Much of Lancaster Capital Day’s future will be determined by how the inaugural event comes off and ultimately how it is received by the community.

“I certainly hope it becomes an annual event. There’s a lot of energy behind that idea,” said Austin. “We really want to see it happen again. This is the year to start it, and year one is the year you set the tone. By year three, it’s a tradition. I think it’s very realistic that this will become an annual festival.

“Our dream as a group is that it would become a local holiday,” concluded Austin.

“If locals care about it, they can make it happen.”
