Holiday Show Is an Altered Version of “The Nutcracker”

Made by students. For everyone.

Silver Spring Dance Conservatory is teaming with several other local studios to put on the second annual “Journey to the Land of the Sweets: A Nutcracker Tale.”

“I think what’s special about our show is that every single role is danced by students,” said Katie Reiter, the creator and choreographer of the presentation. “We don’t hire any professionals, and (all the performers are) from different studios. We have about 10 different studios participating, 60 kids. It’s a great way to see young, aspiring, maybe future professional dancers, getting to dance big, big parts. They work really hard to make this show what it is, and they’re just really beautiful to watch.”

The performances will be held Friday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 20, with a sensory-sensitive show at 11 a.m. and a show at 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Hempfield Performing Arts Center, 1555 Kauffman Road, Landisville.

The evening shows and Sunday matinee will run for approximately an hour; the Saturday morning performance will last about 35 minutes. In the sensory-sensitive show,

the lighting is a little softer and the music is not quite as loud. Following the sensory-sensitive show, audience members will have an opportunity to interact with the dancers.

There is no admission charge for all the performances, but tickets are required and can be reserved by going to www .ticketor.com/silverspring dance. Attendees may also get tickets at the door. Donations will be accepted.

The production is completely funded by donations, and the dancers do not pay to participate in the show. “We really wanted to remove some of common barriers to access because dance is often seen as this expensive, an elite thing, and we wanted to make sure that everybody in the community could come enjoy this performance regardless of their ability to pay,” said Cindy Nehr, who is the executive director of Silver Spring Dance Conservatory.

The cast includes Emily Spanjer (Clara); Livi O’Byrne (Aunt Drusilla); NoraJane Christensen, Gabby Grine, and Abigail Gubbins (enchanted dolls); Grace Martin (MarieClara’s younger sister); Eva Crossland (Snow Queen); McKenna Straley (Coffee); Shannon Witt (Dewdrop); and Gabby Grine (The Sugarplum Fairy).

for the participants. “It gives them the opportunity to work with other dancers of all different ages and levels and experience levels really working together as a group, which is super important in all aspects of life, not just in dance and the arts,” she said. “It also gives them the opportunity to learn how a production like this comes together.

They get to see what’s going on as far as costuming and props and sets and how all the moving parts and bits and pieces come together.”

Auditions for “Journey to the Land of the Sweets: A Nutcracker Tale” start at the end of June. “Then we start pretty much right away,” said Reiter. “Our older dancers participate See Dance pg 4

“It’s a kind of altered version of the traditional ‘Nutcracker’ ballet,” said McKenna, who is a senior at Hempfield High School. “We have about 60 people in our cast, a bunch of leads, a bunch of young dancers, and it’s really a great show.”

She stated that the shows will provide quality holiday entertainment. “It’s good for the holiday season,” said McKenna. “We’re putting the show on around Christmastime. The show is centered around Christmas, a little Christmas party, so I think that people would be interested to see it around the holidays. People are always looking for things to do. I also think it appeals to people because dance is always a cool thing for people who don’t actually dance, so you can come and support young dancers.”

Nehr noted that the ballet shows are good experience

Oola Bowls Continues Franchise Growth

Oola Bowls, the functional food QSR franchise known for its high-pulp, nutrient-dense açaí bowls, recently announced a major acceleration in its nationwide scale, culminating in a landmark 2025 growth year. The brand expanded its footprint to 22 open stores across five states, adding nine new locations in 2025 alone.

Founded in Lancaster in 2018 by friends Joe Ferderbar and Brock Snider, Oola Bowls has successfully scaled its operation, starting with 13 stores in Pennsylvania at the end of 2024 and adding nine more in 2025 across four new states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Florida and Georgia. The company will close 2025 with 22 open locations, five corporate and 17 franchises, and a pipeline of more than 75 units sold across the U.S.

The company’s momentum is anchored by new multi-unit agreements that officially introduce the brand to the western United States. This growth targets

high-demand functional food markets across states such as Idaho, Colorado, Arizona and Ohio. Outside of the west, Oola Bowls has plans for more eastern expansion into Georgia, Florida and its home state of Pennsylvania. Açaí has one of the highest pulp contents in the U.S., resulting in superior flavor and nutrient density. Bowls are topped with signature ingredients like Grandma’s Granola, an exclusive housemade recipe.

In addition to brickand-mortar expansion, the menu continues to develop and grow. In 2025, the brand launched its newest product, Oola Zero Açaí Bowls, with zero added sugar. Crafted for health-conscious consumers and performance-focused lifestyles, Oola Bowls’ Zero Açaí line delivers the antioxidant-rich, energizing power of traditional açaí without the sugar spike. Oola Bowls expects to continue leveraging its franchise development

The program will also mark the farewell concert for QuintEssentially Brass, with the group retiring after the performance. The concert will feature carols arranged for brass, including “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “Over the River and Through the Woods,” and “Jesu, Joy of

in what we call a ‘Nutcracker’ boot camp. For two weeks out of the summer, they have rehearsal in class every day. And then after we’ve established a good amount of choreography, we switch to weekly rehearsals. The closer we get to the show, the more we call all of the dancers and do what we call full run-throughs, where we rehearse the entire ballet from start to finish multiple times. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also really enjoyable.”

Silver Spring Dance Conservatory is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1997. “Our goal is to provide our students with high-level dance training in a space that still nurtures their social development, their creativity, and friendships,” Nehr said. “We really believe that through the arts, we can cultivate really wonderful things in our young people. We really want to do that here. We are providing a very high level of training for our dancers, but it’s also in a space that is welcoming and inclusive and family friendly.”

Gabby Grine will portray the Sugarplum Fairy.

HARTZ PT Presents Donation to Milagro House

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) recently presented a check for $17,000 to Milagro House, a local nonprofit that provides safe housing and supportive services to women and children in crisis.

The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s 22nd annual Fall Blast 5K Run, Walk and Kids Color Run, which was held Oct. 4 at John R. Bonfield Elementary School in Lititz. The event drew hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters from across Lancaster County.

Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To

date, the company has raised more than $386,500 by planning various charitable events, including an April food drive to benefit a Power Packs Project called Feed the Need and its annual Spring Swing golf tournament.

Beards for Brothers, Bench Mark Program, Off the Streets Lancaster, A Week Away, Aaron’s Acres, Lancaster Science Factory, Hospice of Lancaster and Gigi’s Playhouse Lancaster are a few of the other local charities that have benefited from HARTZ PT’s charitable programs.

Bridge of Hope Lancaster Receives Award

Bridge of Hope Lancaster was recently honored with the Division I Top Benchmark Award during the Bridge of Hope National Annual Conference, held Oct. 1 to 3 in Lancaster.

The award recognizes Bridge of Hope Lancaster’s achievement in meeting or exceeding Bridge of Hope benchmarks, which aid in ending family homelessness through Bridge of Hope. The Lancaster branch excelled in both family and Neighboring Volunteer experiences; 100% of families reported experiencing care, friendship, or helpful connections with their Neighboring Volunteers, and 100% of Neighboring Volunteers reported an increased understanding of family homelessness, provided tangible and practical support to the family they neighbored, or developed a

positive relationship with the family. These benchmark achievements exemplify this year’s Bridge of Hope National Conference theme: “Fostering Community Through Connection.”

Bridge of Hope is a national network of 20 locations across 12 states, with a mission to engage Christian faith communities in ending family homelessness through neighboring relationships that demonstrate Christ’s love. The annual conference brings together staff and board members from across the network to connect, gain innovative strategies, and celebrate the achievements made in their collective work to end family homelessness.
