Holiday Shoppe Posted in Hempfield

Last year, Hempfield High School (HHS) introduced a new fundraiser to its yearly Variety Show, which will take place this year on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. the school’s performing arts center. Students, staff and attendees of the Variety Show will have an opportunity to purchase tickets for a gift basket drawing, and all funds raised will directly benefit students in need throughout the district.
“The fundraiser was very successful last year. My goal this year was to expand on the idea and get more gift baskets,” said Maguire Younes, Student Council president. Avery Landis, the 11thgrade Student Council representative, contacted several businesses in Lancaster requesting donations for the baskets. Landis found that local businesses were overwhelmingly supportive of the See Variety Show pg 2
High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, will host its annual Holiday Shoppe on Friday, Dec. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at its Franklin Gymnasium. Multiple stands will sell holiday items and treats in the gym, and each stand will be operated by a different class from within the Hempfield School District. The stands will only accept cash payment for goods.
This year marks the seventh year that Hempfield has hosted the Holiday Shoppe, an idea that was inspired by the Lancaster Holiday Student Mini-Business Bazaar, sponsored by IU13. “We had been attending the IU13 holiday bazaar
for many years and realized how many Hempfield classes were participating,” said Kristie Beatty, who teaches the life skills class at the high school. Ranging from elementary school to high school, different classes run mini businesses for the Holiday Shoppe that sell items such as food, holiday gifts and crafts.
All of the funds raised by each mini business directly benefit their respective class, used for things such as school supplies, field trips and special events. This year, 12 classes will set up stands for the event, including classes from Centerville Middle School, East Petersburg Elementary School, Landisville Middle School, Mountville Elementary School and
the Landisville Education Center.
Beatty’s life skills class will operate a stand for The Grind, a mini business that serves coffee and snacks to Hempfield High School faculty every Friday. During the Holiday Shoppe, Beatty’s students will serve hot chocolate, coffee, doughnuts and hot dogs at lunchtime. Last year, the life skills class visited the Philadelphia Zoo with the money raised from The Grind.
Some of Beatty’s other students will operate the Hempfield Magnet Makers and Knights of the Red Tablet stands. Each stand will sell custom-made holiday refrigerator magnets, as well as writing tablets, respectively. For the magnets, students use glue and fabric to create a design for the finished
products. “We make sure everything is perfect,” said student Lydia Maldonado.
“The kids work so hard to make these items. I love seeing everything come to fruition,” said Beatty. “(The kids) display and sell the items and see the profits of their work.” Beatty also noted that the support from the community each year is tremendous; without the high turnout for the event, the school would not be able to continue it.
So if you’re looking to purchase a holiday gift for yourself or a family member, or if you would just like a cup of fresh hot chocolate, check out the Holiday Shoppe at Hempfield this Christmas season.
fundraiser and happy to participate. The gift baskets include items such as a car detailing package from Lancaster BMW, Apple AirPods and a variety of gift cards. “I got a lot of great feedback, and it was awesome to see how many people were willing to help out,” said Landis.
Multiple teachers and clubs at HHS also put together baskets for the fundraiser, such as a basket of books and book store gift cards from the English department, a basket of makeup assembled by a group of teachers and a basket of Hershey Bears tickets provided by a school club.
Tickets for the Variety Show itself will be available at the door. Before the Variety Show and during intermission, attendees will be able to
purchase tickets and select the basket drawing they would like to enter; all 40 baskets will be displayed in the hallway outside of the performing arts center. At the end of the show, the tickets will be drawn for each basket and the winners will be contacted if they are not present.
“The proceeds for the fundraiser specifically benefit an emergency fund that is used to assist students struggling financially,” said Younes. “This can be a student who has a parent die unexpectedly or who loses (his or her) home to a disaster.”
Although the Variety Show is a tradition that has been held at HHS for many years, this year it will include a greater variety of performance than previous years. The
show will feature performances from beatboxers, character impressionists and a bagpiper, in addition to the more traditional array of singers, dancers and bands. “More students are becoming involved
with the show, and we’re hoping the community will want to be more involved as well,” said Younes. For more information, visit www.hhsrafflebaskets.word press.com.

Mychal’s Message, a nonprofit organization, will hold its ninth annual “Wish” event to raise funds to provide Christmas dinner and gifts for hundreds of Lancaster County children and their families.
“Wish” is a two-hour, full-length, original Christmas musical, which will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 4, and Monday, Dec. 5, at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m.
Working in partnership with the Lancaster Families in Transition Office, local families are selected to receive a full-course Christmas dinner and gifts for their children. This year, 34 families were selected with a total of 94 children to benefit from “Wish.” Each of those children was asked to list a few
gifts he or she would like to receive on Christmas.
Shannon Lapp, who founded Mychal’s Message at the age of 11 in 2002, purchases the gifts, which are then wrapped by cast members and delivered to the families along with the meal. This year’s deliveries will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17, at McCaskey High School, Lancaster.
Funds to support the project are raised primarily through ticket sales for “Wish,” which has taken place at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre every year since 2014, with nearly every show selling out.
Alvina Kline, owner of Encore Dance Center, partners with Mychal’s Message in offering rehearsal space every weekend from October through December at her studio in Lancaster.
A basket and giveaway drawing will be held this year to offset the rising costs of toys and meals, and many businesses in the community have donated items; these donors include Speckled Hen in Strasburg, Hot Z Pizza in Landisville, Bounce Kraze and Sweet Frog in Lancaster and Giant Food Stores. The Lancaster Red Rose Doll Club donated the money to purchase the 35 Barbie dolls requested by this year’s children.
“Wish” is written, choreographed, and directed by a creative team that includes Lapp’s siblings, Christopher and Erin Mary Lynch, and a family friend, Becca Bender, along with others who have helped choreograph this
year’s show - Kristen Zimmerman, a dance instructor at Encore Dance Center, and Leah Brighter, a cast member of “Wish.” The show is performed entirely by volunteers from kindergarten students to recent college graduates. The cast’s collective experience includes performances at American Music Theatre, Sight & Sound Theatre, the Fulton Theatre and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. This year’s show includes tapdancing elves, toys that come to life, a live Nativity and a message that exemplifies the importance of giving.

There are many axioms in the world of sports.
Some are utilized so often that they become part of the lexicon of a given sport almost to mythical proportions.
One of these familiar fables is “Defense wins championships.”
Certainly, the defense of the Manheim Township football team earned them a place in the District Three Class 6A championship game as the Blue Streaks topped Hempfield 42-7 in a semifinal game on Friday, November 18 in Landisville.
The Blue Streaks’ dominant defensive effort included three interceptions by junior safety Nick Palumbo, one of which he ran back 40 yards for Township’s final touchdown of the game.
It was a game between two well-coached teams, both of whom came into the game with multiple offensive weapons and a history of games with defensive dominance.
“The game was a case of Hempfield football not executing to its full potential,” Hempfield head coach George Eager said. “The entire team took turns with miscues and mistakes.
“Offensively, we turned the ball over five times and never got into a rhythm,” Eager added. “On defense, we didn’t tackle well, and we failed to execute the game plan. When you play like we did, you can’t win playoff games no matter who the opponent is.”
The opponent was of course the archrival of the Black Knights whom they faced in the fifth week of the regular season at Manheim Township in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One clash. The Knights, whose season ends with a 9-3 record, won that contest 17-14.
“We made that game a bigger
game than it had to be,” Township head coach Mark Evans said, referring to the regular-season setback. “Our guys should have treated it as the next game. It took us an entire half to get settled in.
“I think our mindset Friday night was that we knew we had not played up to our potential in week 5,” Evans continued. “With a hail Mary touchdown pass they were up 10-7 at halftime and they scored on the opening kickoff of the second half. Two big plays put us behind the eight ball. We took too long to get started.”
Manheim Township (9-3) took a 21-0 lead before the Knights could get on the board in the semifinal match. A fake punt on the scoring drive helped Hempfield maintain momentum.
“The fake punt was necessary,” Eager explained. “We were down 21-0 and knew we needed to climb back in. So, we had to take a chance. It paid off and allowed us to cut the lead to 21-7 with most of the second half left to play. Unfortunately, we couldn’t fight back from there.”
The fake punt, which was executed by Stephen Katch, helped the Knights maintain possession and cap their drive with a fouryard rushing touchdown by quarterback Jackson Landis with 8:06 remaining in the third quarter.
Landis finished with 11 completions for 76 yards plus 19 yards on the ground. The Knights’ ground game was led by Katch, who gained 69 yards on eight carries.
Landon Kennell caught a 16yard touchdown pass from Hayden Johnson to open the scoring. Declan Clancy’s 46-yard touchdown run gave the Streaks a 14-0 lead. Another Clancy touchdown came prior to intermission, giving the visitors the 21-0 advantage.
Johnson’s 20-yard rushing
touchdown and Clancy’s third TD of the game, which came at the 10:44 mark of the fourth quarter, made it 35-7. Palumbo’s pick-six wrapped up the scoring for the game. Johnson finished with 13 completions on 16 pass attempts for 132 yards. He also ran for 98 yards.
“He is starting to come into his own,” Evans said of Johnson. “He has a variety of weapons. He is spreading the ball around and
mixing in the run.
“Our kids got it done,” Evans added. “It was a total team win.”
Eager was asked to reflect on the season and what the teamthe vocal leaders and the unsung heroes alike - provided for the Hempfield sports community.
“This group was able to do things Hempfield football hasn’t done in close to 30 yearswinning an outright section championship and defeating
teams such as Wilson and Township during the regular season,” he said. “These were special accomplishments.
“Our seniors such as Grant Hoover, Brian Williams, Braydon Felsinger, Gabe Benjamin, Stephen Katch, Aiden Shorter, and Jacob Karkoska helped provide the leadership we needed to do these things.
“All year long, our special teams units have been solid,” Eager added. “Two guys to point out are our snapper Tyler Paul and our place kicker Cannon Biscoe. They did a great job all year.
“I love all these guys and this team with all my heart,” continued the coach. “They gave this program everything and it paid off.”

Responder Rehab, a charity wellness event celebrating first responders, will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Switchboard Studios and Gallery, above the Columbia Kettle Works at 40 N. Third St., Columbia. The event will be presented by Bumbling Circus Workshop.
1st Sgt. Albert Storm Jr., a retired Army combat veteran, will teach an introductory yoga class for local first responders. After a severe spinal/pelvic injury, Storm, 63, himself a volunteer firefighter with Blue Rock Fire Rescue, found his way back to health through the practice of yoga. Families and guests may join their responders in the pub downstairs after the class as Columbia Kettle Works will offer discounts for participants as well as drink specials benefiting the cause.
Space is limited. To register, email Storm at bumblingcircus workshop@gmail.com. Sponsors
are sought for the event. Additionally, friends and family members may wish to sponsor a chair massage for their favorite cop, medic or firefighter.
Proceeds from the event will fund youth water safety programs, including swim lesson scholarships for kids from the river towns. This choice was prompted by Storm’s work as a lifeguard at the YMCA.

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant Foods,
Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.
