Auxiliary To Host 25th Craft Show

The women’s auxiliary of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, has been offering holiday shopping opportunities since 1995. The group’s 25th annual Christmas craft show and sale will feature more than 70 vendors and will take place at the church on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Event coordinator Jean Marconi stated that inclusion in the show is restricted to noncommercial vendors, and she tries not to duplicate crafts. For example, while there will be several jewelry vendors, the components, shapes, and designs of their creations are different.

Along with jewelry, the types of items offered at the show will include stained glass, wooden ornaments, baskets from Africa, handwoven towels, handmade See Craft Show pg 6

Pet Pantry Plans Open House, Pictures With Santa

It has been nearly 10 years since Melody Sanders founded the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The organization has flourished, moving from

a rented storage unit to its own facility at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, and operating a mobile surgical trailer that enables veterinarians to perform neuter and spay services in remote locations.

Scouts Slate Santa Celebration

The jolly old elf himself with be on hand to interact with diners and pose for pictures at the annual Breakfast With Santa event hosted by Boy Scout Troop 64 on Saturday, Dec. 7. The breakfast will be held at Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster,

and guests may drop by any time between 8 and 11 a.m.

For an admission fee, guests will be offered a meal containing pancakes, bacon and other breakfast meats, scrambled eggs, apples, coffee, tea, juice, and milk. Eggnog toasts will be held every hour and will be accompanied with the singing of carols.

Santa To Visit Lancaster City Each holiday season, Santa arrives in Lancaster city on the night after Thanksgiving during the Mayor’s Tree Lighting in Penn Square, taking up residence in the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., in the month leading up to Christmas.

This year, Santa will visit the city from Saturday, Nov. 30, to Saturday, Dec. 21. Community members may visit with him in the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square and Lancaster County Convention Center on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photos by Photole Photography will be available for a fee, or people may take their own for free.

Breakfast With Santa, hosted by the Lancaster Office of Promotion, will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Lancaster Marriott. The event will include breakfast, live entertainment, and a visit with Santa. Reservations are required. Separate ticket costs have been set for people age 3 and up.

Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster and Lancaster Fellow Foodies will present the Giving Hope Food Tour as part of the 12th annual GTGH Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

Ticket holders will be able to taste many dishes from eight unique food businesses: Lancaster County Stroopie Company, Upohar Ethnic Cuisines, Culinary Services by Chef Oliver, Isabelle Cuisine, Grape Leaf Café, Walk-O Taco, Reunion Food Truck, and Xulbo Bridge Food Stands.

Each food tour attendee will receive a stamp card that will direct them to the participating food booths. At each stand, a volunteer or the business owner will share information about the food and food business. Participants may enjoy the food tour at their own pace while completing holiday shopping at the fair.

Tickets are required and may be purchased in advance at a discount or for a higher price on the day of the event while available. To purchase tickets in advance, readers may search for “Giving Hope Food Tour” on Facebook or Eventbrite.

The gift fair aims to offer a way to find meaningful and unique gifts while supporting more than 40 causes, such as fair trade and ethical companies. Individuals will have the option of making charitable gift donations to the on-site nonprofits in honor of loved ones, with each gift including a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Additionally, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items.

Children will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights, and those who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights.

In addition to the food tour, food will be available to purchase from local vendors.

Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA) will present the 54th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, featuring eight private homes and numerous historic properties. “Each home has its own unique style and decor that showcases the owners’ personality, and we are excited to see how beautifully decorated the homes are this year,” said Jasmine Preston, event chair. “It is one of the longest-running tours available in Lancaster County, and Marietta is proud of its success through the years.”

The property of the Marietta Senior Apartments, 601 E. Market St., will be decked out for the holidays and open to tour participants thanks to the efforts of manager Lisa Kashner and director of property management Jo Raff. “This is our first year decorating the outside of the building, so we’re going all out and channeling our inner Joanna Gaines,” said Kashner with a laugh. The building stands where the B.F. Hiestand Lumber Mill was originally built in 1848.

Kashner noted that the apartments’ residents traditionally go above and beyond for Halloween. Being on the Marietta Candlelight Tour for the first time has given everyone another holiday to throw their energy and creativity

In addition to the participating homes, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church - celebrating its 200th anniversary - will be on the tour as this year’s featured church. Several other historic properties will be open to participants as well, including Old Town Hall Museum. Built in 1847, the building now hosts a museum on the first floor with a unique collection of Marietta and Lancaster County memorabilia.

Union Meeting House will showcase work from local artists for people to browse and purchase. Resident organist Kirk Garner will play Christmas music on the Meeting House’s 1847 Henry Knauff Pipe Organ.

Arts and crafts vendors will be set up at First National Escape and Pioneer Fire Company. Chicken and waffle meals will be available to purchase at the fire company from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the Marietta Community House, Nissley Vineyards will offer wine sampling and wine to purchase, and Marietta Wax Company will be set up selling primitive decor.

In addition, Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., will host its annual Winter Faire from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where tour participants - as well as the public - are invited to stop in for holiday shopping, children’s games and activities, and food and beverages.

“Marietta truly sparkles on the first Sunday of every December,” Preston said.

“It’s the highlight to a lot of people’s holiday season, (and) it really kicks off Christmas in the river town.”

Event To Feature Concert, Desserts Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC), 2340 State St., East Petersburg, will offer an event featuring a concert and desserts on Sunday, Dec. 8. The evening will highlight Trinity UCC musicians.

The concert will begin at 6 p.m., and desserts will follow the concert. A sign-up sheet is located in the church narthex, or individuals may call 717-569-1632 for dessert reservations. A freewill offering will be received to benefit Habitat for Humanity and Trinity’s music ministry.

Also, the community is invited to the church on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24. The schedule includes the Eucharist at 3 and 10:30 p.m., along with a family service at 6:30 p.m. There will be musical preludes prior to the services.

Jingle Bell Ring Slated The Jingle Bell Ring, sponsored by the Central PA Handbell Festival, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14. Handbell musicians will ring holiday favorites for the general public during the visit with Santa event hosted by Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Bell ringing will occur from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and then again from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Community members are invited to perform at the event. Ringers are asked to be present from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and each handbell musician will ring two natural bells in a threeoctave range. Ringers must supply their own bells and floor music stand.

There is a registration fee.

There is no admission charged to hear the bells play, but nonperishable food items and monetary donations will be received at the event and donated to Autumn’s Food Pantry at the Emerald Foundation.

Born and raised in Wrightsville, Newcomer moved into Marietta Senior Apartments five years ago after retiring and moving back to the area from Lewes, Del. Her apartment features an array of country and primitive décor.

“It truly is a community event showcasing the entire town during the holiday season,” said Preston.

Preston explained that the Marietta Candlelight Tour planning committee only takes a three-week break each year before it starts the planning of the next tour.

“You can see the passion in their eyes when start talking about their thoughts for the next year,” remarked Preston.

Creative Works Posts Events Creative Works of Lancaster has announced two writing opportunities for upcoming projects in 2020.

Readers are invited to share their weird, bad, awkward, or outrageous date stories. Creative Works will work with local writers to turn their stories into a series of short performances at Modern Art, 529 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, on Valentine’s Day weekend. To tell stories from a variety of perspectives, any story is welcome, as long as it is true.

MCCL Sets Holiday Concerts The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will present its Christmas Concert Series. The 150-voice choir will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Audiences will be treated to a Gospelinfused program of music from around the world and across time featuring soprano Sherrie Strange Pratt of New York City. She has starred as Mary in the People’s Place production of the Nativity, was a featured performer at the 100-year anniversary celebration of the Mennonite Historical Society in 2011, and sang with MCCL during its December 2011 concerts and in the Celebration of Hope and Healing benefit concert in with MCCL Chamber Choir in 2015.

The auditioned performing choir includes Carol Choir for grades two to five, Concert Choir for grades six to eight, and Chamber Choir for grades nine to 12, led by artistic director Rosemary Blessing and director Sarah Wingard. Jonathan Shoff directs the Men’s Ensemble. The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing.

“Through the Door,” an exhibit from local artist Gail Whatmore, will be on display in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of December.

The public is invited to meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on Dec. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, and holds regular gallery hours on weekdays.

Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her family’s home.

Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts.

The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season.

Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene.

WBUMC Slates Holiday Activities Heritage Chorale Sets Christmas Series

The members of Washington Boro United Methodist Church (WBUMC), 1964 Water St., Washington Boro, invite the community to attend several upcoming events.

A baked potato bar meal will be served free of charge at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. The menu will include baked potatoes and an assortment of toppings: sour cream, broccoli, grated cheese, cheese sauce, chili, salsa, bacon, chives, and butter. Desserts will be offered as well.

The meal has traditionally been held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving as part of an Advent festival, said Tabetha Young, who is the co-chair of the Mission and Nurture Committee along with Diana Boswa.

“We used to do a covered dish thing, but we got tired of turkey,” Young added.

Typically, two services are offered on Sunday mornings, with a modified service at 8:15 a.m. and a blended service at 10:30 a.m. However, only the later service is offered in December. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. and currently serve individuals from age 6 to 92.

During the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 1, Juniata County resident Jeremy Goodling will give a concert of Christmas and gospel music. WBUMC pastor Carlene

Wolf will give a short message. A soup and sandwich meal will follow the service.

A children’s program highlighting a possible meaning of the “12 Days of Christmas” will be featured at the service on Sunday, Dec. 8. A Christmas Eve service containing music, Scripture reading, and candlelight singing will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Additionally, the Mission and Nurture Committee will host a Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Eleven vendors are slated to participate, offering a mix of handcrafted and direct sales items. The church kitchen will sell egg sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, beef barbecue, and both cups and quarts of chicken corn soup, tomato soup, and beef vegetable soup.

There will also be a baked goods table.

The proceeds from the bazaar will be used to support local and foreign missions, Wolf said. In previous years, beneficiaries have included the Columbia Ministerium, Africa Inland Mission, Love146, Global Ministries’ Family Village Farm in India, North Star Initiative, LUMINA, and Water Street Mission.

The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Christmas 2019 concert series, “O Magnum Mysterium: We Sing the Mystery of Bethlehem!” Performances will be held at 4 p.m. on select Sundays, with the schedule including Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, on Dec. 1; Zion Lutheran Church, 85 E. The Heritage Chorale’s artistic director, Barry L. Sawyer, has devised a program of musical meditations on the Bethlehem miracle venerated in the medieval text “O Magnum Mysterium.” With its origins deep in the Middle Ages, the text was a responsorial chant sung as part of Christmas

matins - a service celebrated near the midnight hour of Christmas Eve. The Latin text describes the Nativity scene when Christ was born and laid in a manger, where animals were witnesses to his birth.

Food Banks Receive Donated Turkeys Giant Food Stores donated 7,000 turkeys to 13 partner food banks located in communities served by the company.

An annual tradition, the 2019 turkey donation took place on Nov. 5 in advance of the holiday season to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for those in need.

The following food banks received turkeys: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (Verona, Va.), Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, Family & Community Services of Delaware County, Helping Harvest (Reading), Lancaster County Food Hub, Manna on Main Street

(Lansdale), Maryland Food Bank - Western Branch (Hagerstown, Md.), Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank (Nazareth), State College Food Bank, United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Scranton), and York County Food Bank.

In addition to the turkey donation, Giant and Martin’s team members spent the day volunteering by organizing and restocking shelves to help partner food banks in advance of the busy holiday season.

age of cat food. About 3,000 pounds of cat food is distributed each month, Sanders said, although she added that she typically underestimates how much food is given to households that would otherwise not be able to afford to keep their pets.

The Pet Pantry is currently supporting 325 households, with distribution locations in Gap and Lancaster city, as well as at its headquarters. “We’re helping people become responsible owners,” Sanders commented, noting that program participants are required to have their pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Dogs must be licensed in accordance with state law.

Well-behaved pets may be brought to the open house, as photographs with Santa Claus will be available for a small fee. Light refreshments will be served.

Attendees may shop the thrift store, which will offer pet-themed Christmas gifts. Jewelry and “12 Dogs of Christmas” dog treats will be for sale as well.

At 6 p.m., the lights adorning the building’s exterior will officially be turned on for the season. Individuals may sponsor bulbs as part of the “Light the Way to Meet the Need” fundraiser. Additionally, attendees may take home empty water bottles to fill with dimes for the Pet Pantry. The bottles are labeled with “Charlie’s One Dime at a Time” in memory of the late Charlie MacMullen, who volunteered at the Pet Pantry until his death two years ago. Sanders’ last memory of MacMullen is of him giving her a water bottle filled with dimes. While the contents of each bottle - typically between $11 and $12 - may not seem to go far individually, MacMullen’s legacy has made a lasting impact on Sanders and the Pet Pantry.

Sanders noted that the Pet Pantry has gone through a growth spurt in the last year. The Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program has flourished, and a grant has made

it possible for the mobile surgical trailer to go into the community to host TNR clinics.

“I don’t care what size bag you give us, what brand you give us; I’ll take it all,” Sanders commented.

Craft table coordinator Darlene Yourgal said she seeks out donations of handmade items from parishioners, and auxiliary members contribute as well. This year’s offerings will include kitchen angels made from potholders and towels, decorated pillowcases, knitted and crocheted items, stained glass decorations, ornaments, and cork wreaths.

“The work other people do amazes me,” Keen commented.

Auxiliary president Ann Marie Dumm shared that the craft show and sale facilitates fellowship and camaraderie among women in the parish. The event also provides funds for the group to distribute locally. The auxiliary purchases confirmation and First Communion gifts for parish members, awards two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the parish each year, contributes to community meals and church building repairs, donates to the American Cancer Society, and purchases Christmas gifts for Conestoga View residents. The auxiliary has also held a baby shower for A Woman’s Concern.

The only exception to the handmade rule is made for the Lancaster Public Library, which sells new and used books in one of the church’s classrooms.

The craft show will fill seven classrooms, two hallways, two lobbies, and the gymnasium. Vendors will be set up on both the first and second floors of the church. The facility does not have an elevator, but the outside entrances to both levels are wheelchair accessible. Parking and admission will be free of charge.

The show is popular among vendors and shoppers alike. Attendance at the show typically reaches 2,000 people, and the waiting list for vendors contains 235 names. Marconi begins accepting vendor applications each year in June.

“Longtime vendors get the first invitations,” Marconi said. “We also have a waiting list for the gym.” New vendors start out in the hallways before moving into a classroom and eventually into the gymnasium as the spaces become available.

“You have to pay your dues,” said stained glass maker and auxiliary member Barbara Keen.

Marconi noted that the café area has been enlarged this year to make room for people to sit down and enjoy snacks or a meal. Members of the parish will sell breakfast sandwiches, chicken corn soup,

“It totally blows my mind on all this,” Sanders marveled. “It’s an idea we brought to the public, and they support us.”

While Sanders dreams about buying a farm for the Pet Pantry, where pets would have room to run and interact with potential adoptive families, she is happy to show off the current facility. An open house on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will enable community members to tour the building, see the “state of the heart” surgical suite, meet staff members and volunteers, and interact with adoptable dogs and cats.

“We want people to come out and be educated on what we do here and how we meet the needs of the community,” Sanders said.

Guests are invited to bring dry pet food with them to the open house. While both dog food and cat food are needed, the Pet Pantry is currently experiencing a short-

In addition to her service with Troop 64, Evans is a member of the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) memorial council, and she has been instrumental in fostering the troop’s involvement with Wreaths Across America (WAA). On Dec. 7, the troop will accept donations for WAA, which strives to place a wreath on every veteran’s gravesite during the holiday season. The Scouts will also accept interment flags - the ones distributed to families after servicemembers’ funerals as they are the only flags that are flown at the IGNC. “The flags will serve a greater purpose than collecting dust,” Evans suggested.

Troop 64 also collects worn-out flags that are ready to be retired. The flags will be burned and placed in IGNC graves before deceased servicemembers are buried.

“They’re in desperate need (of flags),” Evans said. “They’re opening a whole new section of the cemetery.”

Proceeds from Breakfast With Santa will support Scouting activities, including monthly camping events. The troop is planning a high adventure trip to Canada’s Northern Tier in summer 2020. Multiple days of canoeing in Ontario will constitute the trip.

Troop 64 currently has 25 members, and new members ages 11 to 18 are always welcome. The troop meets at Salem UCC every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December.

“Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m.

Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.

Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client.

Santa Claus is coming to town … on a fire truck! The first-ever Christmas in the Park in Washington Boro will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road.

Local churches have united to present the event, which will be open to the public free of charge.

“We want to bring the light of Christ to our community to lead into the Christmas season,” said Dennis Regitz, pastor of Home Faith Communities. “(And to) honor the people of the Washington Boro community,” added Washington Boro United Methodist Church (WBUMC) pastor Carlene Wolf.

“There are events (at the park) in summertime but not in winter. The idea came from Hallmark Christmas movies.”

Regitz and Wolf asserted that this will be the first time that Christmas caroling has been offered as a community event at the Washington Boro Park. The festivities will surround a live tree, which will be

planted in the park as the organizers hope the event will become an annual tradition.

The evening will be hosted by WBUMC member Chris Collins, and he and his wife, Belinda, will lead the singing of Christmas carols. Washington Boro Church of God member Steve Funk will read the Christmas story from the Bible and turn on the lights decorating the community tree.

After the ceremony, hot chocolate, cookies, and the makings for s’mores will be provided. The event will be crowned with Santa Claus’ arrival with gifts on an antique fire truck.

The event is anticipated to run for 60 to 90 minutes and will be held outside, weather permitting. If there is rain or heavy snow, updates will be posted on the Washington Boro United Methodist Church page on Facebook. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs, as seating will not be provided.

In addition to Regitz and Wolf, the event organizers include Washington Boro Church of God pastor Dave Johnson and Central Manor Church of God representative Scott Davis. Community members are welcome to join the team to plan next year’s event. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim.

The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category.

The project consisted of a six-story overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority.

Choir Plans Holiday Concerts The Voices of the Valley, a central Pennsylvania vocal ensemble, will present “Rejoice: The Concerts of Christmas.” The concerts will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 309 Herman Ave., Lemoyne; and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra.

The concerts will feature chants, spirituals, carols, and lullabies from throughout the ages, including well-known songs of the season, new arrangements of classics, and

some brand new melodies, as well as instrumental accompaniment.

Under the direction of Gregg R. Mauroni, Voices of the Valley will celebrate its 42nd season. The group began in the late 1970s

by Lebanon Valley College graduates seeking to continue singing with their director, Dr. Pierce Getz. After Getz passed away, Mauroni was hired to lead the ensemble.

Currently, 45 voices are accompanied by Ruth Sweigart and directed by Mauroni.

An adjunct professor at Penn State University Park, Mauroni is in his 11th season as artistic director and conductor of Voices of

the Valley. He also conducts Essence of Joy, a Penn State choral ensemble, and is the assistant director of music and arts at Monumental AME Church in Steelton.

While the concert at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is free and open to the public, a freewill offering will be received during intermission, with 10% of the offering going to the rebuilding of Tanzania’s Busoka Lutheran Church, which was destroyed by wind shear. Busoka is a companion congregation of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. There will also be a cookie walk on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon to raise funds for

the church’s international outreach in Busoka. Additionally, Christmas Eve services are slated for 3 and 5 p.m. for family services and 7:30 and 10 p.m. for candlelight services. Thanks to the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers and the support of local businesses, organizations, and individuals, 700 households will receive a Christmas food box filled with holiday dinner items and additional grocery staples. Each box will contain a turkey, eggs, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereal, and more. Families with children from newborns to 10-yearolds who are not receiving Toys for Tots may also request to receive toys along with the food boxes.

Sing For The Moment Schedules Seasonal Concert

Working together with Candy Yingling at the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, devised a way for area Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing to rehearse together and present two yearly concerts at Landis Homes. Hoover asked Clair Leaman, conductor of the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs at Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster and in Chester County, to work with the group, and Sing for the Moment held its first holiday concert in December 2018.

This year’s concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Landis Homes in the West Bethany Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. The first part of the vocal concert will include a variety of Christmas favorites, followed by a performance by the St. Stephen Reformed Church of New Holland handbell choir under the direction of Clair’s wife, Charlene. The final segment of the vocal concert will feature a number of songs from “The Sound of Music.”

Several vocalists will be spotlighted during the concert, including Shelby Swartley and David Harnish on “The Holly and the Ivy” and Bernie Linn on “O Holy Night.” Kristen Albert will be the featured vocalist on “The Sound of Music,” and Lois Good will be in the spotlight for “Do-Re-Mi.” Carl Good will be the vocalist on “Edelweiss.”

Other familiar tunes in the presentation will include “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “I Saw Three Ships,” and “What Child Is This?”

The nearly 50 choir members begin onehour weekly rehearsals eight weeks prior to the concert. Clair creates a song book that includes all the song lyrics in large print with the pages decorated with artwork created by students at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown.

According to Clair, each practice is an engaging experience. “It is more a journey than a practice. We have fun together,” he said. He noted that recently the wife of one singer noticed a change in her husband when practice ended. “She said that he had been very cantankerous when he came in to sing,” recalled Clair, who added that the woman said her husband’s mood was much improved at the end. “It was like turning a page,” said Clair.

In addition to Clair, Hoover, and Yingling, the Sing for the Moment organizing committee includes Swartley, a social worker with Lancaster General Health Penn Medicine Alzheimer’s and Memory Care Program; Deb Laws-Landis of Landis Homes; pianist Sandy Smoker; Ann Fulmer; and Donna Becker.

“We have had standing room-only crowds each time (we have held a concert),” said Clair of the fall 2018 and spring 2019 events, which he added are often emotional for members of the audience. “There are a lot of tears shed when (relatives) see their family members engaged (and singing).”

DeBord Snyder Funeral Home began hosting a similar service of remembrance at its facility in 2017, and the service has since outgrown its venue.

DeBord Snyder Funeral Home owner Jeremy R. DeBord noted that the funeral home and the church have a strong relationship, dating back to when his great-grandfather owned the funeral home.

missionary parents. She grew up in Lancaster, and she later became a missionary herself, serving in Lapland, Finland. Hess now has a shop in Lancaster’s Gallery Row. She travels abroad yearly to paint on location.

Fisher is especially looking forward to hearing Hess talk about the source of her imaginative work. “Artists have so much creativity that comes from their heart and their soul,” she said. “It starts somewhere within.” She looks forward to hearing Hess’ insights at the brunch. Guests will have the opportunity to hear about how Hess draws inspiration from worshipping the Master Painter, who has filled the Earth with form, color, and pattern.

On the menu for the brunch will be quiche, fresh fruit, pastries, orange juice, and coffee.

The idea to return the event to a brunch format for women after a time of not holding a brunch was also inspired by the holidays. “I hadn’t held a brunch in a little while, and, you know, there’s a world out there that needs peace and joy,” said Fisher. “(So I decided) to have a fun brunch with women and invite someone in that we highly respect and honor in this town.”

Creative And Colorful Christmas Brunch Planned About a year ago, Dona Fisher, founder of Friendship Foundation and the Change of Pace Bible studies, received a Christmas card from a neighbor that featured a painting by Liz Hess. The painting captivated Fisher. “The painting ... is of all the world bowing down to the Christ child,” said Fisher, who went on to share that the card depicts people representing countries from all over the world who are dressed in the colorful clothing of their native land.

The card inspired Fisher to ask Hess if she would tell her story at an event. “(The painting was) what really stirred me to ask her,” recalled Fisher. “I was moved by that, and I picked up the phone and called her shop.”

Hess agreed to be a speaker at the event that Fisher calls “A Creative and Colorful Christmas Brunch.” The meal for women, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Eden Resort Courtyard, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster, will feature a buffet meal and cookies shaped like red umbrellas to honor Hess’ use of the colorful parasol in her paintings.

Jordan E. Lenick, licensed funeral director at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, shared that the holidays can feel overwhelming for those who have experienced a loss and that the service will offer a place where families may reflect and remember their loved ones in ways that are meaningful to them.
