Christmas In The Country Bazaar Planned The 41st annual Christmas in the Country bazaar and craft show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ (UCC), 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. The bazaar typically draws more than 1,000 visitors each year and boasts 60-plus juried crafters who are carefully selected for each new show.

This year’s bazaar will include many longtime and new vendors who will feature crafts such as handmade wreaths, baskets, pillows, stained glass decorations, jewelry, paintings and other artwork, doll clothes, holiday and seasonal ornaments and decor, hand-carved wood novelties, and more. In addition to the crafters, the bazaar will include the Apostles Crafters Room, which will offer

handmade craft items created throughout the year by church members. There will also be a Corner Cupboard with jams, jellies, candies, and other homemade treats.

Food will be available in the fellowship hall throughout the event. The menu will include soups, sandwiches, hot dogs, barbecue, beverages, and a large variety of homemade baked goods. The soups for sale will be vegetable beef, vegetarian chili, and chicken corn.

An assortment of homemade pies and apple dumplings will once again be made by the Bischoff family and members of the Apostles choir. This year, pie varieties will include apple, blueberry, sweet and sour cherry, and pumpkin. A selection of sugar-free pies and dumplings will also be available.

CRAFTING EVENT

The Circle Legacy Center will present its next Second Friday program, “Making Native American Arts and Crafts,” on Nov. 9 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster.

The Keystone State Boychoir will perform in the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster.

It premiered in 1999, more than 25 years after work on the opera began. The opera was inspired by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.”

The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the

piece. The piece also features call and response conversations between the different instrument families, as well as complex rhythmic patterns that fuse with the flavor of Spanish heritage.

Navarro performed two seasons ago with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of one of his other works.

Old French, written by university students, minstrels, defrocked monks, and artists, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The works reflect a strong belief in destiny, an attitude that was a combination of medieval Christianity and ancient Greek philosophy.

In 1935, Orff read the uncovered “Carmina Burana” manuscript as compiled by Johann Andrea Schmeller in 1847 and decided to use the texts in the first section of a trilogy of cantatas titled “Carmina Burana,” “Catulli Carmina,” and “Trionfo di Afrodite.” By 1936, Orff finished the first part, and “Carmina Burana” premiered in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 8, 1937. The American premiere followed many years later in San Francisco on Oct. 3, 1954.

John Harbison is a U.S. contemporary composer. “Remembering Gatsby” comes from an opera titled “The Great Gatsby.”

The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania’s Holiday Vendor/Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mountville Community Center, 120 College Ave., Mountville.

More than 35 vendors and crafters will be on-site offering products such as cosmetics, storage containers, food products,

jewelry, and more. Crafts will include beard brushes, wooden carvings of Santas and animals, doll clothing, and jewelry.

The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania is part of Pilot International, a worldwide service organization providing leadership opportunities to youths, promoting brain wellness and safety, and supporing

families of persons with special needs. The Central Pennsylvania club has provided four Caroline’s carts to local food stores and partnered with Aaron Acres for a spring dance for older participants and summer craft days for younger participants. It also supports the Hershey Mill Home with holiday celebrations and food needs and has partici-

pated in the Ronald McDonald Make a Meal program.

The club also sponsors the Lititz/Manheim Community Anchor Club, a student club with similar goals and mission. The Pilot Club sponsored Anchor Club members to attend leadership summits and helps the students with their events throughout the school year.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold the second concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School, 1051 Lehigh Ave., Lancaster.

Performances will take place at 3 and 8 p.m. Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser will lead the combined forces of the Lancaster Symphony, the Keystone State Boychoir, and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Guest vocalists Elizabeth Caballero, Daniel Shirley, and John Viscardi will be featured. “Favorite Things” Concert To Feature Family Members John R. Richard, DDS “We respect and we love one another, and you don’t always find that combination,” said Michael Jamanis, violinist, of his mother, Frances Veri, a pianist.

The characteristics of that type of relationship are obvious between the two, who will be performing a special fall concert at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). “I used to have to say, ‘Michael, did you practice?’” said a chuckling Veri. “Now he says, ‘Mom, did you practice?’”

“These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things,” a free concert in the round featuring Jamanis on violin and Veri on piano, will be held at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Main Auditorium.

The idea for the title came about when Tony Brill, LCHS director of Fine and Performing Arts, explained to Jamanis and Veri that they would be in the center of the audience on the auditorium floor. “It will be a much more intimate concert, and I love that because there’s more audience interaction,” said Jamanis. Veri likened the setting to inviting the audience into the family living room, and she compared the musical selections to a buffet dinner. “This is special

(because it is like) putting all the things you love to eat on the menu, and whether they go together or not, we are (serving them),” she said.

Mother and son noted that choosing the music for the evening was like taking a walk down memory lane together. “We will be doing Beethoven’s ‘Spring Sonata,’” said Jamanis, noting, “I grew up listening to that in the living room at home.” Jamanis and his mother recalled how a family friend and his wife would join them for dinner and afterward the friend would play the piece with Veri. “I remember this as a kid (under) 8 years old,” Jamanis said. Veri recalled that the piece became a tradition.

“No matter what we played (that evening), we ended with the ‘Spring,’” she said. “It was like our signature (song).”

When discussing playing the “Romantic Pieces” of Dvorak, which the duo will play at the concert, Jamanis remembered playing them at Harriet Brisk’s house when he was in middle school. “Harriet was a family friend and important member of the Musical Arts Society,” explained Veri.

“She would have house concerts for young people,” added Jamanis.

Each of the musicians has selected a solo piece by Bach to perform. “I am going to do the ‘Chromatic Fantasy,’” said Veri.

“It’s a favorite (of mine) and a great work.” Jamanis will play Bach’s “Chaconne,” a piece that has become a sort of signature for him. “It has been part of my repertoire for years (because) it

feeds my spirit, and it symbolizes the arc of life (for me),” he said.

Both performers are especially excited about the concert setting.

“It is like putting your arms around the audience,” said Veri, and Jamanis added, “There is no fourth wall in this.”

During the event, club members will display various fossils, minerals, and crystals found locally and all around the world.

Haefner made special note of select fossil ferns from St. Clair, Pa.; wavellite found in only Pennsylvania and Arkansas; rare tabular graphite crystals in blue quartz that the club discovered in Exton in 2013; and trilobite fossils from the Kinzers formation in Lancaster and York counties.

“Something that is significant is a new genus,” Haefner related. “(I found a) new form of life in 2017, and photos and details of the research will be shared to those who inquire.” He noted that the creature appears to have been the size of a small onion, with tendrils that reached out to collect food.

Haefner uncovered the first fossil in the York side of the Kinzers formation, and a second of better quality was found in spring this year. Both specimens were found in soft-bodied fossilization, a unique form of preservation in

Walton readily admits that he is not a businessman, and he considers Spiders From Mars a hobby. According to Walton, only time will tell the direction this hobby will take. “As David Bowie said, ‘I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring,’” Walton quoted.

The Lancaster County Community Foundation will hold the seventh annual Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals may visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from any of 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make an online donation.

Thanks to the Community Foundation, the High Foundation, and corporate sponsors, all participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. For example, if an organization receives 3 percent of the total donations raised during the Extraordinary Give, that organization will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool. An additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered throughout the day in the form of Golden Tickets and other incentive structures.

New this year, individuals may support their favorite organizations through peer-topeer fundraising. Individuals may set fundraising goals and share stories and their ExtraGive personal links with their social network to raise support for their chosen organizations on Nov. 16. Community members may become peer-to-peer ExtraGive fundraisers by visiting the aforementioned website, finding the organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button.

Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be part of spreading the word about the Extraordinary Give by being part of the Give Fleet.

The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website.

On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public.

The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate.

The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind.

Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family

Church To Host Jazz Musician

Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ (UCC), 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has announced that acclaimed New York jazz musician, pianist, composer, and vocalist Deanna Witkowski will perform at the church’s 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. worship services on Sunday, Nov. 11. Church of the Apostles invites the community to attend.

Witkowski is well known for her jazz arrangements of classic hymns, and she was the winner of the 2002 Great American Jazz Piano Competition. Her albums feature fusions of jazz, classical, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music.

Her most recent album, the 2017 trio album “Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz Hymns,” features 12 of her jazz arrangements of classic hymns, along with a companion sheet music book. Her work also includes 80 sacred music o r i g i nals and arrangements, including two jazz Masses.

She was a guest on “Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz” on National Public Radio in 2003.

England Carol Contest and the Illinois-ACDA Choral Composition Contest. In 2015, she was one of five composers selected for the New Dramatists ComposerLibrettist Studio, where she composed five music theater pieces in the space of two weeks in collaboration with five playwrights. She is also the recipient of a 2018 New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant.

In the spring of 2018, Witkowski spent eight weeks in Bahia, Brazil, doing research for her new project, the “Nossa Sehhora Suite.”

The suite will merge Afro-Brazilian expressions of the Virgin Mary with new jazz compositions for Witkowski’s jazz quartet, percussion, and four vocalists.

Witkowski holds a Master of Arts in jazz piano performance from the City College of New York and a Bachelor of Music in classical piano performance from Wheaton College of Illinois.

Basketball Tournament To Benefit Lancaster Youths

that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school.

Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,� Carrigan said.

As the flagship fundraiser for

the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000.

Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Experience, the event has helped to fund International Medical Relief, including eye and dental care in international locations; the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Park; School District of Lancaster programs that encourage literacy; Rotary Youth Leadership Camp; International Youth Study Exchange; and a variety of scholarships and grants.

“The Beech Grove� and, weather permitting, will give a tour of the Tanger Arboretum itself. Located on the grounds of LancasterHistory.org, the arboretum is host to eight beech trees. Rehder will also share insights on her work.

A Presidential Lecture Series program will take place on Nov. 15 in Ryder Hall. After a reception at 4 p.m., the main presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dr. Thomas Balcerski of Eastern Connecticut State University will present “The Worst President: Assessing the Failure of James Buchanan’s Administration.� Since the first presidential

rating conducted in 1948, James Buchanan has consistently been rated as below average. He is now regularly ranked last among the 45 U.S. presidents. Balcerski will explain the upsides and downsides of the presidential rating game, as well as Buchanan’s rating.

The event is free and open to the public. At this time, no advance reservations are required.

LancasterHistory.org will host a story time on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. Children will hear a story related to a historical themes and then take part in an activity or craft inspired by the theme. The program is designed to broaden historical knowledge while establishing basic museum literacy and critical thinking skills.

This program is designed for children ages 4 to 9, but all children are welcome. The story time is free for children and accompanying adults, but reservations are required.

Yuletide at Wheatland will occur from Monday, Nov. 19, to Saturday, Dec. 29. Visitors to Wheatland mansion, home of 15th United States President James Buchanan, will be able to see holiday displays taking viewers from James Buchanan’s early Victorian era to the 1920s, when the house was owned by the Willson family. Tickets include a festive holiday- and history-themed guided tour of Wheatland and admission to LancasterHistory.org’s selfguided museum exhibitions.

When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a fourteam men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January.

The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization.

Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University.

The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. Seniors Alex Garcia and Cameron Graybill along with junior Eddie Pohl fulfilled those duties.

“We also rotated in Nebeyu Bekere and Colson Hunt,” added Ashley.

“Those guys controlled the midfield two- or three-at-a-time. All five of them did a good job. They were winning head balls and creating opportunities by switching the point of attack.”

FOOTBALL It’s the nature of the playoff match-ups in District Three football: If you’re the lowest seed in the power rankings, you’re going to be pitted against the top seed.

That was the case on Saturday afternoon at Harrisburg High School’s Walter E Severance Field as the Black Knights faced the Cougars in the district quarterfinals. The Cougars’ potent offense had scored over 30 points in eight of its 10 victories.

The only times they scored under 30 points were wins against other district qualifying teams - Central Dauphin and Chambersburg. In fact, the Cougars had outscored opponents by a collective 180-23 in their final three regular season games.

On Saturday, the Black Knights, who entered the post-season with a 5-5 record, had slowed down the Cougars and trailed by only 20 points at the half. However, the special teams for Harrisburg added a spark that put the game out of reach.

Rynell Gantt returned the secondhalf opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, Donte Kent returned a punt 74 yards to the Hempfield end zone.

Gantt capped the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Kane Everson. Gantt had three catches for 58 yards as Everson completed 19 of 21 attempts for 235 yards and two TD’s. Everson also threw for a pair of two-point PAT conversions and added two more

Hempfield held Harrisburg scoreless in the first quarter. In the second stanza, running back Jahmir Plant, who ran for 150 yards, scored two touchdowns from inside the Knights’ five-yard line. The two rushing scores were sandwiched around a Donte Kent 13-yard TD reception.

Hempfield quarterback Colin Peters threw for 106 yards on 12 completions. Jackson Shand was on the receiving end of five Peters passes for 47 yards. With his two receptions Darien Ressler accumulated 31 yards. Matt Heuston had

The Hempfield Black Knights may have found themselves rooting for the team that had just defeated them in the District Three Class 4A boys’ soccer semifinals on Tuesday evening.

The Wilson Bulldogs, who improved to 19-3-1, scored in the 12th minute of the match and held Hempfield to only three shots on goal in a 1-0 victory at Central Dauphin Middle School’s George Ebersole Stadium. Victor Vottero scored off a Patrick Ndambo assist to send second-seeded Wilson to the district championship game at Hersheypark Stadium on Saturday, November 3.

“They scored a nice goal on a cross to the far post,” head coach Mark Ashley said. “They were able to get two runners into the area where we only had one defender. He couldn’t defend them both and nothing a goalkeeper could do either. It was a quality service and a good finish.

“They had one other good counter-attack where Tristan Green made a nice save,” Ashley said of the Knights’ goalie who made four saves in the game.

For much of the second half, the Bulldogs tightened up the defense, limiting the Knights to three shots

on goal.

“The three chances we had, we weren’t able to play the ball inside,” Ashley continued. “They dropped additional players back.

“I credit the Wilson defense as we didn’t create enough offensive opportunities,” commented the coach. “But I was proud of how the boys played.”

As for the Knights (14-5-0) rooting for the Bulldogs? Rather than play a consolation match with Central Dauphin - the team that lost to top-seeded Cumberland Valley in the other semifinal, the third-place team out of District Three would be determined depending on which losing team from the semis lost to the subsequent champ.

“It did turn out that way,” Ashley said. “It would be nice to play in a consolation game and determine your seed on how you perform. On the other hand, you do risk injuries. The guys we have that did have some injuries can rest up and heal.”

With this match being played back-and-forth between the 18-yard boxes of each side, the midfield play was paramount.

“There was a lot of midfield play between the 18’s,” Ashley said. “We played much of the game with only two or three midfielders because we

seed in the district brackets. However, the Eagles prevailed on this night, winning three close sets, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22.

That 19th victory was in the district quarterfinals on Tuesday back at Hempfield where the Knights topped Lower Dauphin 3-0.

In the victory over the LD Falcons, Jailene Lugo poured in 11 kills for Hempfield as the hosts posted scores of 25-11, 25-6 and 25-19.

Sarah Shirk contributed in a huge way, distributing 31 assists.

Claire Flood, who had a team-high

eight digs, and Ashley Weaver each registered two blocks while Kylie Ulrich served up three aces.

Despite the loss that followed two days later, the Knights were already assured a spot in the PIAA Class 4A state playoffs. The top four teams from the district are automatic

state-qualifying teams.

But that wasn’t enough for the Knights, who had suffered their first loss of the year. Hence, they went on to post a 3-0 victory in the district consolation match, defeating South Western 25-18, 25-21 and 25-15 on Saturday. The match was part of a

district doubleheader as it was followed by Cumberland Valley’s exciting 3-2 defeat of second-seeded Exeter Township.

Flood had a team-high 12 kills while Emma Bitner came through with 35 assists. Allison Cummings had a match-high 14 digs. Ulrich and Gracyn Krazwicski each had two aces with Ulrich, Rachel Sipling, Megan Criste and Flood each registering one block.

Ali St. Rose of South Western had a match-high 15 kills and Megan Wolf had 13 digs.

Entering the PIAA 4A championships, the Knights go in as the third-place team from District Three and are scheduled to face District One champ Bishop Shanahan at Upper Dublin High School.

CROSS COUNTRY Justin Rittenhouse competed in the PIAA Class-AAA state championship meet at Hershey on Saturday. The Hempfield senior raced through the course at a 17:36.00 time and finished 95th overall.

TENNIS Amanda Hagino’s successful season, which included winning the gold medal at the District Three singles championships as well as claiming top honors in the Lancaster-

Lebanon League tournament, came to a close in the PIAA Class-AAA state championships.

In Friday’s opening round at the Hershey Racquet Club, the Hempfield senior advanced with a tough 6-3, 6-4

victory over District Two champ Bella Peters of Abington Heights. However, in the quarterfinals later that day, Amanda Honer of Council Rock North ended Hagino’s quest for state gold with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Hempfield’s Justin Rittenhouse finished 21st overall at the District Three Cross Country Championships at Big Springs HS on October 27 to qualify for the PIAA Championships and lead the Black Knights’ boys team to a fifth-place finish in districts.

Packing Shoeboxes, Sending Love Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes.

“We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said.

“We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.”

National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy

One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.”

Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available.

that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts.

“During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.”

“For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.”

In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year.

This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes

Fathers and their children gathered for breakfast during the All Pro Dad program at Centerville Elementary School. The group meets for breakfast and fellowship on the second Friday of each month.

In Pennsylvania, there are 28 chapters, and the program is offered at Centerville Elementary School (CES) in Hempfield School District. Wilfred Muskens currently leads the group.

Each month, the club discusses a new topic, such as positivity, teamwork, connecting with children using technology, and working hard. There is also time for discussion, with sample questions for fathers and children to ask each other, designed to create meaningful conversation. At the end of the breakfast sessions, door prizes are given away.

“My favorite part of the breakfast program is when we go around the room and ask each of the dads to introduce his son or daughter and say something about the child that he is proud of for that month,” said Muskens.

“The children’s faces just light up.

All Pro Dad can provide an opportunity to promote and celebrate the family and students’ good character in a setting that is uplifting and encouraging.”

The All Pro Dad program at Centerville Elementary began last school year. The program meets on the second Friday of each

month during the school year from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the Music Rehearsal Room. The next meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, and signs will be posted to indicate where attendees should go when they enter the building.

All fathers are welcome to attend with their CES students. Although the focus is on fathers, other relatives such as grandparents are welcome to attend as well.

Church Holiday Bazaar Slated Lancaster Moravian Church, 227 N. Queen St. (second floor), Lancaster, will host its holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bazaar will feature crafts, homemade baked goods and jams, Moravian sugar cakes, Moravian stars, and silent auction items. In addition, vintage holiday décor items and free coffee and tea will be available.

At noon, there will be a drawing for a vintage, handquilted, queen-size quilt in a Log Cabin design. The winner need not be present. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Moravian Board of World Missions for Disaster Response. Tickets may be purchased until noon.

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock opera that is said to have reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the musical is loosely based on the final week in the life of Jesus Christ, from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, and features a mix of musical styles that draw

upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes.

Allegro Sets “Music In The Round” Allegro Orchestra will give a Music in the Round performance in the Atrium at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 16. The event will begin with a reception at 7 p.m. featuring local desserts and beverages, followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m.

“Music in the Round: Pictures of Lancaster” will pay musical tribute to the arts and crafts of Lancaster and the community’s Extraordinary Give. The event will feature the premiere of

works by three local composers and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

As with all of Allegro’s inthe-round performances, the repertoire will fill less than an hour. Local composers Ralph Lehman, John Carbon, and Jeffrey Campbell Binner will each premier pieces.

A quilt depicting Lancaster city scenes by Jeanne Riley, former president of the Red Rose Quilters Guild, will also be on display.

Diabetes Day 2018 Planned Diabetes Day 2018 will be hosted by the PSMG Lancaster Diabetes Center at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim, on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Vendors will be set up from 10 to 11 a.m., after which registered dietitian and licensed dietitian/nutritionist Kilene Knitter from a local grocery store will speak from 11 a.m. to noon.

Church To Offer Holiday Meals La Academia Students Attend Convention Five students from La Academia: The Partnership Charter School (LAPCS) recently attended the Pennsylvania Latino Convention as ambassadors of the school. It was the first convention held in the 222 Latino Corridor, which includes the regions of Easton, Bethlehem, Allentown, Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Harrisburg and Gettysburg and its surroundings and is home to more than 50 percent of the state’s total Latino population.

The students were escorted by Dr. Aida Ceara, LAPCS board president and retired associate professor at Millersville University.

The Pennsylvania Latino Convention was held at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square on Sept. 20 to 22. The convention was created to serve as the annual gathering to ignite positive change in local communities across the state while ensuring key stakeholders are accessible, accountable and responsive to the needs of the Latino community. Its purpose is to promote Latino/Hispanic achievements and preparation for local, state, national and global competitiveness

available to neighboring helping facilities and provides support to member students and those who come from nearby Franklin & Marshall College.

Christmas Treasures Sale Slated The Women’s Association of Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will hold its annual Christmas Treasures Sale on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available in a rear parking lot.
