Scout Troops Welcome Girls And Boys

Due to recent changes in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), girls may now enjoy the same Scouting activities as boys. Seven girl troops have formed in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, including Troop 90G, reported Sis George, chair of the committee that oversees Troop 90G and its brother group, Troop 90B. Troops 90B and 90G meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3825 Concordia Road, Columbia, and they will host an open house for any interested persons ages 11 to 17 and their parents on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Guests may observe the respective troops’ regular meetings, which typically include training in an aspect of first aid, planning for upcoming events, and an active game.

“Sometimes we just go up to Grubb Lake and hike around,” said Derik Shelor, Scoutmaster for the boys’ troop.

Shelor helped to get the ball rolling on the formation of the girls’ troop, as the closest one is in Mount Joy and there was some interest from the community for a troop closer to Mountville. “My daughter grew up watching my son go camping once a month, and she wanted that too,” he said. “(Her) goal is to be the first Eagle Scout in the troop.”

Scout Troops 90B and 90G will host an open house at their regular meetings on Tuesday, See Scout Troops pg 6 Nov. 5. The two groups meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will select a specific time for a tour that will take approximately one hour.

Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live re-enactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The guided tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will visit six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn about how the Pilgrims created their own model of self-government. Dayspring first offered Thanksgiving Exposed in 2002, when the school was located in Lancaster.

Separate from the “Thanksgiving Exposed” event, Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2021 will hold a dinner and soup sale on Nov. 22 across the street from Dayspring at the Mountville Church of the Brethren Church, 60 Clay St. Proceeds will go toward the Class of 2021’s senior class field study to Israel. Natana, who has extensive diplomatic experience, was involved during the creation of South Sudan in 2011. He assumed his current post in Washington, D.C., in September 2018. Jacob Guot, founder of SRM, will also be a featured guest at this year’s banquet.

The fundraiser will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Celebration Center of First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The goal of the event is to specifically raise educational scholarship funds for South Sudanese students from kindergarten through college in order to prepare them to be citizens, leaders, and Christians in the world’s newest country. There is a per-person cost to attend.

Lancaster organizers enjoy a special relationship with Guot, who is a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” one of thousands who escaped Sudan’s civil war, walked more than 1,000 miles across East Africa, and grew up in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

He graduated from Lancaster Bible College before moving to Wilmore, Ky., where he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary. In addition to the SRM, Guot founded a separate nonprofit that is overseeing the purchase of land and the building of a civic and religious center in Bor. Guot has recently published his story, “The Lost Boy Is Found, A Lost Boy’s Story of Faith, Hope, Charity, and Love.”

Church and the Lancaster area, created SRM to support the education and development of South Sudanese people. SRM is particularly interested in helping students who have been orphaned because of the civil unrest in the country and is committed to serving the promising students of South Sudan.

She won an American Horticultural Society book award in 2016 for “Seeing Seeds: A Journey Into the World of Seedheads, Pods, and Fruit,” and her hourlong presentation at the banquet will have the same title. “I haven’t heard anyone else speak on this topic,” Bob commented. “These are seeds like you’ve never seen them before.”

There will be opportunities to win prizes at the banquet, and many will have a garden theme. A social hour with a cash bar will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and then the buffet dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include Virginia baked ham, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, tossed salad, coleslaw, fresh fruit, rolls, and

assorted desserts. Beverages will include coffee, iced tea, and fruit punch. Vegetarian meals will be available upon request.

The Lancaster County Garden Club is in its 85th year - its name was changed from Men’s Garden Club about 15 years ago and it continually welcomes new members.

Residence in Lancaster County is not a requirement of club membership. Currently, 142 people belong to the club, which meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. A program is held each month, except for August, when the club hosts its annual corn roast, which began in the

group’s second year. Guests are welcome to attend club events, with donations accepted for program attendance.

Every meeting includes a show table where attendees may exhibit flowers, artwork, or anything else related to gardening. A number of members participate in area flower shows, Bob noted. The club also offers garden tours and takes field trips.

The club focuses on education, and Master Gardeners can earn education credits by attending programs. Bob is particularly excited about next year’s presentation slate.

“I called six ringers and got them all,” Bob said.

The Lancaster County Garden Club also has a commitment to civic projects that enhance beauty and livability of the area.

Most notably, the group planted and maintains the rose garden in Lancaster city’s Buchanan Park.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, North Star Initiative will host a Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. North Star Initiative began operating The Harbor, Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, in 2017.

“The common remark I get from people is, ‘Trafficking is really happening here in Lancaster County?’ And it is,” shared Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative director of development. “It’s important to become aware of what’s going on and to know the facts so you can share them with other people.”

Esbenshade said that the Tapas Shindig to R.I.S.E. will help people to understand more about the issue and how they can support the ministry of North Star Initiative. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered.

The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy! Though I fall, I will rise; though I sit in darkness, the

Lord is a light for me.”

The Harbor is designed to provide a safe haven for women ages 18 to 40 who are survivors of sex trafficking. It has capacity for up to 10 residents at a time.

Esbenshade explained that The Harbor Restoration Program aims to provide psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual care with a holistic, Christ-centered focus. Through the trauma-informed, strengths-based residential program, the needs of each survivor are assessed and an individual care plan is implemented.

The Harbor can provide access to trauma therapy and supports, life skills and other education classes, and assistance with preparing for safe, healthy, and independent living in the future.

Tapas Shindig ticket proceeds will go toward providing equine-assisted therapy for residents of The Harbor. “All of our residents get individualized therapy, and (equine therapy) is something that has been extra beneficial for them,” explained Esbenshade.

Doors for the Tapas Shindig will open at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of sharing, tapas, a silent auction, and live music performed by country musician Ryan Mayersky. Tickets are limited and may be purchased by visiting https://northstarinitiative.org and clicking on the Events page.

Kelly Rine volunteered to serve as Scoutmaster for the new troop. Her sons are alumni of Troop 90, and Rine was a den leader when they were Cub Scouts. The fledgling group of five girls had its first meeting in the spring. A few of the experienced boys have mentored the girl troop.

“We are a Scout-led program,” Rine explained. “All of our girls are first-year Scouts, so they don’t have experience in (leading a troop), so they’re learning from the older boys.”

Troops 90B and 90G are separate entities, but they are cooperative in several areas. The girls’ troop will have access to the boys’ camping, kayaking, and canoeing equipment until the girls build up a supply of their own. The two groups go on some activities together, and they share adult supervisors. Meeting at the same time and location makes it convenient for siblings to participate in Scouting, Rine said.

The two troops have a full schedule of events planned through the end of 2020.

This includes kayaking and high adventure trips, visiting the National Zoo and several battlefields, attending Scout camps, cold weather camping, snow skiing, participating in the Mountville Memorial Day Parade, and more.

Safety, particularly related to sexual integrity, is important, so the troops adhere to BSA’s strict regulations, which have been designed to protect children and adults.

The Millersville Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW) will hold a community breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Millersville Community Church’s First Campus, 121 N. George St., Millersville.

The menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, egg/ham/cheese and potato casseroles, caramel French toast, and beverages. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children. Veterans may

Troop members will spend a day distributing empty grocery bags, and then on Saturday, Nov. 16, after camping on the lawn of the Mountville Church of the Brethren, they will collect bags filled with nonperishable food. The community typically donates more than a ton of food for the Columbia Food Bank through Troop 90B’s Scouting for Food efforts.

The troops also participate in service projects. These include roadside cleanups, mulching at Concordia Church, hosting a food drive, directing traffic for Mountville lawn concerts, planting trees for Mountville borough, opening the Mountville Pool, and providing labor at the Mountville Library book sale. The boys have traditionally accumulated 400 to 500 service hours per year.

VisionCorps clients experiencing low vision and blindness were introduced to new, accessible features of Lancaster County voting machines ahead of the upcoming election. During a recent support group meeting for individuals experiencing vision loss, Randall Wenger of the Lancaster County Board of Elections and Registration demonstrated new key features that are designed to improve the voting experience for individuals living with low vision or blindness. Lancaster is known as the first Pennsylvania county to use the most recent voting system, though it has been available in other areas of the country.

The new system includes features like changing colors (color, black and white, or inverted black and white), varying text sizes, Braille keys, and headphones. The system gives the user audio cues throughout the entire ballot navigation process and includes three wheels on the controller (move, select, or get help), each with Braille beneath it to help indicate what it does. Users will also be able to review an audible summary of the ballot at the end of the process.

Poll workers will be trained on the new system to ensure voters receive the guidance they may need. Sample ballots will be available online prior to the election at www.co.lancaster.pa.us/elections.

After about 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, which included chances by both teams in overtime, the decision for who would advance moved into the penalty kicks. Township goalie Ali Quinn, who had nine saves on the day, saved one of the Hempfield PK’s.

However, Lizzy Yurchak, Abby Burdyn, Lauren Weaver and Haski each made their shots to edge Township 4-3 in the shootout stage.

Emileigh Antesberger came up with six clutch saves for Hempfield.

“We were able to score pretty early,” Mackey noted. “I thought our play was a little inconsistent. It wasn’t our best effort. Governor Mifflin came to play and came at us. We had to weather the storm and missed a couple of opportunities to go up by two goals.”

Hempfield is scheduled to host Tuesday’s game against Wilson

(19-4). The third-ranked Bulldogs edged sixth-ranked Central York 3-2 in yet another penalty shootout.

One more win assures the Knights a spot in the PIAA Class 6A state playoffs. If they lose their semifinal match, they can still qualify with a consolation game victory.

CROSS COUNTRY The District Three schools gathered their cross country squads at Big Spring High School on Saturday for

the championship meet. In the District Three Class-AAA competition, the Hempfield boys’ team finished an impressive seventh while the girls’ team earned 15th place.

Cedar Crest was the winning team in the boys’ race with 119 points.

Hershey finished a distant second with 180 points. The Knights (262) missed sixth place by a single point as Shippensburg racked up 261.

Jack Mieszkalski paced Hempfield, running at a 16:14.1 clip and finishing sixth overall. Evan Eshleman was among the top-10. The junior’s 16:19.0 time earned him 10th place.

Aiden Hodge gave the Knights another strong finisher. He ran at a 16:47.3 clip to earn 34th place. Dale Winand (89th, 17:39.9) and Ethan Kline (133rd, 17:48.5) also led the way.

In the girls’ race, the Hempfield team compiled 445 points. Carlisle won with 152 while Mechanicsburg

(157) and Dallastown (163) made for a tight finish in the team standings.

Lily Williams led Hempfield with a 68th place finish in 20:28.9. The squad also got strong efforts from Gabi Hollinger (82nd, 20:47.8), Paige Harrington (86th, 20:57.3), Isabel Smith (102nd, 21:18.17) and Cahsia Page (107th, 21:22.7) FOOTBALL Hempfield wrapped up the 2019 football season with a Section One clash at Manheim Township. The Black Knights were going up against a team poised to claim its third straight Section One title - a Township defense that had blanked its two previous opponents by a collective score of 133-0.

The Blue Streaks wrapped up the regular season with an undefeated record (10-0), defeating Hempfield 49-0. The Knights finished 4-6 (2-4 league).

A weekend conference staged at two western Lancaster County historical societies will explore the relationships among American Indians and the first Europeans to settle, farm, and trade in central Pennsylvania in the 18th century. A variety of programs will be open to the public without charge.

The conference will begin on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. with the Millersville Area Historical Society’s meeting at the Millersville municipal center, 100 Municipal Drive. Nicole Eustace, professor of history at New York University, will present a program titled “Murder and Mercy on the Susquehanna: Captain Civility of Conestoga Teaches Pennsylvania Colonists New Principles of Justice.”

At 10:30 a.m., conference participants may enjoy a self-guided historical driving tour to refresh their memories of the William Penn land area and the Native American use of that land. The tour was created by local historians Darvin Martin

and Christine Brubaker. The tour will stop at notable sites along the Conestoga River and Indian Creek and conclude at the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, where lunch will be served.

The tour will also include a stop at land owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, which has public access and is a Lancaster County Historic Preservation Trust site. Brubaker, who organized the conference, is spearheading a movement to have the abandoned house and its surrounding land designated as a cultural and historic heritage park, with a proposed name of Penn-Logan Outdoor Education Center. The park would be dedicated to the indigenous people and provincial settlers of Pennsylvania and highlight the Native Americans’ Great Conestoga Road, Pennsylvania founder William Penn, and Penn’s secretary, James Logan, who owned land in Conestoga and Manor townships.

At 1 p.m., Barry Lee, a board member and song leader for Circle Legacy Center, a local Native American advocacy group, will share his wampum belts and heritage stories.

The conference will continue on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., when the CAHS hosts Will Fenton, director of scholarly innovation at The Library Company of Philadelphia. Fenton will introduce a new graphic novel, “Ghost River: The Fall and Rise of the Conestoga,” which was produced with assistance from Circle Legacy Center, Pew Charitable Trust scholars, and public school teachers. Lancaster newspaper columnist and author Jack Brubaker will discuss the aftermath of the massacre of Conestoga Native Americans in 1763.

The conference has been designed to promote awareness of early Native American and European relations and, especially, of the major role Logan played in connecting the two groups. Logan, whose primary home was in Philadelphia, owned

about 500 acres along the Little Conestoga Creek and the Conestoga River. He also established a trading post that served the Conestoga Native Americans who lived in Manor Township. The Conestoga wagon originated in the area and carried trade goods throughout the commonwealth and beyond.

“We hope this program will launch a new awareness of (Native American)/settler relationships,’’ said Brubaker. “We also hope it will help build momentum for a recreational and educational public cultural heritage park to be created on Logan’s historic land.

We want to emphasize the unique nature of the relationships he helped forge in William Penn’s Pennsylvania.’’

Quaker Pastor Plans Visit Otterbein United Methodist Church, 20 E. Clay St., Lancaster, will host a weekend of events with Philip Gulley, a storyteller, Quaker pastor, and author, on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3.

On Nov. 2, a free storytelling event will begin at 7 p.m. On Nov. 3, Gulley will speak at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service, followed by a storytelling session at 10:45 a.m. with an optional catered lunch. Lunch will be available for a fee.

Gulley, from Indiana, is the author of 22 books and has performed at the Lititz Storytelling Festival. He discusses his progressive world in his theology books, including “The Evolution of Faith.”

Historic Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) will host its Olde Salem Craft Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rear building at 324 Walnut St., Columbia.

Items for sale will include handmade soaps, bowling pin snowmen and penguins, jewelry, bookmarks, Christmas tags, canvas art, pour paint pictures, handmade Christmas ornaments, Mary Kay products, Thrown pottery, succulents, herbal products, quilts, wall hangings, table runners, and mug rugs.

Giveaway drawing items will include themed baskets, featuring themes such as Legos, cat items, local businesses, gift cards, and chocolate. A table of new and gently used Christmas products will be set up.

This year, children may visit the Kid’s

Corner to make and wrap gifts. The Kid’s Corner will also include a lollipop tree, a photo booth, and more.

The church will offer a lunch of homemade soups, including chicken corn soup, and sandwiches. Available baked goods will include peanut butter balls, small pies, pumpkin bread in a jar, old-fashioned sugar cookies, dirt pudding, chocolate chip cookies, and fudge. Takeouts will be available.

All proceeds from the bazaar will be used for Salem’s building upkeep and outreach projects.
