Scout Troops Welcome Girls And Boys By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Due to recent changes in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), girls may now enjoy the same Scouting activities as boys. Seven girl troops have formed in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, including Troop 90G, reported Sis George, chair of the committee that oversees Troop 90G and its brother group, Troop 90B. Troops 90B and 90G meet on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3825 Concordia Road, Columbia, and they will host an open house for any interested persons ages 11 to 17 and their parents on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Guests may observe the respective troops’ regular meetings, which typically include training in an aspect of first aid, planning for upcoming events, and an active game. “Sometimes we just go up to Grubb Lake and hike around,” said Derik Shelor, Scoutmaster for the boys’ troop. Shelor helped to get the ball rolling on the formation of the girls’ troop, as the closest one is in Mount Joy and there was some interest from the community for a troop closer to Mountville. “My daughter grew up watching my son go camping once a month, and she wanted that too,” he said. “(Her) goal is to be the first Eagle Scout in the troop.” Scout Troops 90B and 90G will host an open house at their regular meetings on Tuesday, See Scout Troops pg 6 Nov. 5. The two groups meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church.
