Salem UCC Plans “Bizarre Bazaar� BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“It’s our 35th year. It’s a big year for us,â€? Eileen Shipe commented, noting that for 34 years, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. The inventory for the inaugural event and those that followed were handcrafted by church members, who made ornaments, home dĂŠcor, and more. Eventually, the bazaar began to include outside vendors, with Shipe coordinating their participation. Church members still contributed items that were featured in a type of silent auction. In June, while the church building was in its fourth month of closure to all activities, Shipe and her committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire inventory for what has been dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,â€? Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.â€? “I was really impressed,â€? added church council member and webmaster Alex DiMarzio. “They really turned out.â€?

Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co.,
At the intake appointment for a recurring issue, I commented offhand to my physical therapist (PT) that one of my shoulders was feeling sore. I joked that the reason could be due to dressing up to leave the house more often after several months of living in pajamas during the shutdown. Individuals may visit the website until Friday, Nov. 6, to view the baskets, buy tickets to enter to win the lots of their choosing, and order food prepared by the Salem Servers. low back and neck pain, likely due to decreased overall activity levels because people are out of their usual routine, and (have) poor work setups at home. Sometimes arthritic flare-ups can occur.” Office workers, in particular, may be experiencing pain because after years of regularly sitting at workstations designed for their specific tasks, they suddenly had to make do with a coffee table and a kitchen chair, a bed and stacks of pillows, or even just a seat on the floor with a wall for back support. For the first week or two after the March shutdown, the makeshift seating might have been fine, but with remote work continuing indefinitely, the uncomfortable seating has taken its toll on some individuals. To stave off issues, Bolen recommends individuals use desks where they can rest their forearms comfortably at 90-degree angles to decrease
the likelihood of lifting their shoulders in a shrug when typing. Also, computer monitors should be at eye level so users do not have to flex or extend their necks for long periods of time. “This will help mitigate tightness and restriction through the shoulder/neck region,” Bolen said. “These tips can also be applied to the low back. Sitting in a supportive chair that allows you to keep both feet on the floor will reduce low back stress as well as fight the urge to lean forward.” If individuals do not have the space or the finances to create an ergonomic workstation at home, they can still participate in positive work habits like taking regular breaks to stand up and move. “It is healthy for our joints to be exposed to compressive forces when walking because it helps lubricate the joints, and when we sit for long periods of time, we lose out on that bene-
them,” Bolen said, adding a suggestion to look for a PT who will treat the whole client, not just an isolated body part. “ We know now that many issues that people come to see us for are multifactorial, and you need a PT that can evaluate and address all your impairments appropriately.” When finding a PT, it may help clients to ask questions such as how long an evaluation typically takes and who will provide care during treatment. Many PTs work with physical therapy assistants (PTAs), and they may have PT and PTA students completing practicums as well. “Different clinics have different protocols they use,” Bolen explained. PT clinics must follow CDC guidelines regarding COVID19 mitigation. Everyone in a facility must wear masks at all times, social distancing is implemented as needed, and all equipment and surfaces are sanitized after use and at the end of each day.

fit,” Bolen said. “Along with that concept, it is super important to stay hydrated.” It is time to seek physical therapy if discomfort impacts the way a person performs their usual activities or they are living with chronic, nagging issues, Bolen suggested. If getting dressed, sitting, or walking causes pain, a PT can help. PTs are medical professionals who are licensed to evaluate and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological issues in a variety of settings. Many Pennsylvania insurance companies, Medicare excluded, allow clients to see PTs directly without referrals from primary care physicians. Each state has its own laws regarding direct access, Bolen said. There are many clinic options in the area, so selecting a PT often comes down to personality. “Get someone that listens to you and that you can have a conversation with. You will see your PT often, so it is good for you to feel comfortable talking to

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took

BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Manheim Township on Monday. Hempfield rebounded with a 2-0 victory at Cedar Crest on Wednesday and edged Penn Manor 2-1 on Friday, completing the regular season with a 7-4-0 (7-3-0 league) record. In a tightly contested match, where both teams got off four shots on goal, the Blue Streaks got a first-half goal by Brady Yohe and a Hempfield own goal in the second half to earn a victory. An early goal by Zach Antesberger and another by Ethan Keitel, with two minutes to the final whistle, gave the Knights a 2-0 win at Cedar Crest. Michael Keene snagged six saves for a shutout. Back on their home turf for the season finale, the Knights were in a 1-1 tie with Manor to start the second half. Not for long. One minute after the break, Nathan Leisure scored the goahead goal. Keene (4 saves) and the defense held on for the 2-1 victory. Nate Schwartz scored Hempfield’s first goal. Ben Ammon and Gunnar Swanger each recorded an assist.
GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team wrapped up its season with three more L-L League matches. The Knights suffered a 3-0 loss to eventual Section One champ Manheim Township on Monday. The Streaks finished the season 10-10 with five shutouts in their final six matches. On Wednesday, the Knights played Cedar Crest to a scoreless draw. On Friday afternoon, Hempfield visited Penn Manor where the Comets came away with a 3-1 victory. Hempfield finished the 2020 season at 4-5-2 (3-5-2). Back on September 29, playing on its home turf, Hempfield downed Penn Manor by the same score. On Friday, second-half goals by Jordan Arms broke a 1-1 halftime tie to give the Comets a win. Faith Siegrist gave the Knights the lead 23 minutes into the game. With only two minutes to the halftime whistle, Carolyn Hinkle scored the equalizer for the Comets. The Falcons out-shot the Knights in Wednesday’s match by an 8-6 count. Goalie Emileigh Antesberger was up to the challenge in this marathon match with eight saves through regulation and overtime.

The boys raced Tuesday with Hempfield claiming first place with 44 team points, edging Cedar Crest by 17. In the girls’ race the following afternoon Hempfield finished fourth with 85 points - only one shy of Manheim Township while Warwick took first with 62. Aidan Hodge paced the boys’ squad, finishing second only to Penn Manor’s Graham Thomas, who posted a time of 16:07.7. Hodge registered 16:31.7. Dale Winand (16:59.1) and Evan Eshleman (17:01.5) were sixth and seventh, respectively. Sophomore Joe Fahrney’s time of 17:06.6 was good for ninth place. Another underclassman, freshman Sam Freedman, had a strong finish, taking 20th with a time of 17:42. David Jackson (31st, 18:02.6) and Chris Titter (18:07.9) also ran well, placing 31st and 34th respectively. Ella Wolfe ran the course at a 20:10.1 clip, earning seventh place, while Hannah Kilheffer’s 20:59.3 was good for 15th. Lily Williams (21:01.4) and Molly Siebert (21:03.0) crossed the finish line in succession, taking 17th and 18th. Isabel Smith (28th, 21:35.9) rounded out the top five. Gabriella Hollinger was 37th and Paige Harrington 50th with respective times of 22:06.7 and 22:36.1.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘ We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

W hile Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

New items arrive on Fridays and have the highest price. By the following Thursday, the items are discounted to rock-bottom prices. “This concept is out there just not around here,” Smiley commented. AJ’s is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The past seven months have not been easy for the residents and staff members of Faith Friendship Villa, 128 W. Main St., Mountville. The personal care facility is home to 74 residents, 95% of whom have some form of mental illness. “Not only were we keeping people safe from a physical issue, but we were keeping their mental health safe as well,” said executive director Gwen Didden. “We would try to keep things as normal as possible but also keep exposure down. We did a lot of educating (and) talking through emotions (like) fear and frustration.” Because outings were no longer allowed, staff members had to be creative with inhouse activities. They offered crafts, meaningful conversations, and encouragement. Some staff members downloaded Zoom and other videoconferencing software to their personal devices to help residents stay connected with their friends and family mem-
bers. Store runs, when a staff member would venture out to shop for the residents, were highlights of their weeks. “It really did help us as a community grow closer,” Didden said. “We’ve been really gentle with ourselves and each other, but we’re focusing on being the best we can be.” While the residents and staff members of the villa are making the most of things, the community misses having visitors. Due to state regulations, guests are limited. This means that the families that served meals, the churches that hosted bingo on Sunday nights, and even the student group from Milton Hershey School that visited have had to suspend their involvement. “We really miss our support system,” Didden commented. She noted that some groups have been able to do some work on the grounds surrounding the villa. “Residents loved it because they could look out the window and see their support system hasn’t left us.” Some churches have hosted
