Forty vendors have registered to participate in the event, and some of the goods they will offer include handspun yarns, holiday aprons for adults and children, cards and stationery, painted gourds, wreaths, vintage ornaments, primitive Christmas décor, and woodworked products. A vendor known as the Pillow Lady will be at the event again. “She always sells out every year,”
Shipe said, noting that the woman gives the proceeds from her sales to the mission teams at her Quarryville-based church. Some of the vendors will be familiar to repeat bazaar attendees, but there will be new ones as well. “We’ve really gotten a lot (of new vendors) by word of mouth,” Shipe remarked, adding that Christmas at Salem has a good reputation in vendor circles. “Our kitchen goes around and takes their orders for food, and we help to take their items in to the church and out to their cars.” The bazaar will also feature a book fair and a silent auction. The 42nd Christmas in the Country bazaar and craft show will be held at Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which usually draws more than 1,000 shoppers, will feature more than 60 carefully selected vendors and crafters. SSC To Stage “The Crucible” By Chelsea Peifer
Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) will perform Arthur Miller’s masterful 1953 American drama “The Crucible” as the debut play in the Eater Theater at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Set in Salem, Mass., “The Crucible” tells the fictionalized story of the witch trials that took place among the Massachusetts Bay Colonists in 1692. Performances are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, Oct. 25 to 27, and Thursday to Sunday, Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday shows, which will be at 2 p.m. Parking is available at the rear of the Marietta Center for the Arts. Tickets for the show may be purchased in advance at www.susque hannastageco.com or by calling 717-426-1277. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students. Director Kevin Ditzler described the themes of “The Crucible” as timeless and relevant. “(‘The Crucible’) looks at who is to
blame in all of this, and the audience will be trying to figure out how people were duped into this,” Ditzler said. “We want the audience to feel the hysteria the people of Salem felt, and attempting to do that really excited me to take on this show.” Ditzler has 20 years of experience directing shows at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and has acted in numerous SSC performances. This will be his first time directing an SSC production. Rachel Snyder of Mount Joy will portray 17-year-old orphan Abigail Williams, who works as a live-in housekeeper for John and Elizabeth Proctor until she is kicked out by Elizabeth. “(Abigail) twists the truth so much and makes the whole town believe her lies,” Snyder said. “The tension throughout the show builds for itself,” noted Tom Sharpes of Lancaster, who will portray John. “You really identify with these characters and want them to make the right decisions. The writing is brilliant.” Madeline Ruth Pickens, who will play Elizabeth, agreed and described her character as having many layers. “It’s

Her thought life is such a battle and trying to communicate that to the audience is difficult. Veterans Day Program Slated A Veterans Day program honoring local veterans will be held veterans are especially encouraged to attend. The program is coon Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at the VFW Post 2435, Fourth and sponsored by Arconic Mill Products’ Veterans Employee Group in Manor streets, Columbia. The event is open to the public, and Lancaster and the Columbia High School Class of 1974. The program will consist of the posting of colors, including the U.S. flag, and the singing of the national anthem. A Gold Star family will be involved, and a guest speaker will present. The master of ceremonies will be veteran Jason Bailey, president of Arconic Mill Products’ Veterans Employee Group. A “Table of Lights” ceremonial table presentation will be made by retired Sgt. 1st Class Warren “Flap” Gilbert Jr. of the U.S. Army. Gilbert is a Columbia resident, Arconic employee, veteran and 1974 graduate of Columbia High School. Others will be represented in the table presentation, as well. Attendees are asked to bring a canned food item for donation to the Columbia Food Bank, as well as a pair of new, white socks for men or women. The socks will be donated to veterans at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital. After the program, a social gathering will be held at VFW Post 2435 for family members, friends, guests and veterans. Rock Ford Plantation, in collaboration with Theater of the Seventh Sister, will present a one-act play titled “The Matchmaker: A Tale Drawn From ‘Emma’ by Jane Austen.” Rock Ford director Sam Slaymaker’s adaptation of the classic novel will be presented in the candlelit rooms of the Rock Ford mansion on Thursdays, Nov. 7, 14 and 21, at 6:30 and 8 p.m. and on Fridays, Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22, at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Each performance will run approximately 50 minutes, with scenes taking place in each of the four parlors on the main floor and in the central hallway of the circa 1794 mansion. The performance will include live period music and dancing, with Rock Ford’s group of period dancers led by Glenda Jardel. Following the play, guests are invited to gather around the fireplace in the Rock Ford kitchen to enjoy a slice of wedding cake and a cup of punch in keeping with the matrimonial theme of the production. Because “Emma” is a novel of more than 400 pages, Slaymaker realized from the outset that it would only be possible to present a small part of it at Rock Ford. The production focuses on the first of the three volumes that make up the novel. According to Slaymaker, “Emma” takes

The three-course meal will conclude with peacock-themed cupcakes, representing the FaWMs logo, which features a peacock and the slogan “Doing Life Together.” “FaWMs was inspired by the notion that women love to connect in groups beyond church, work, and life’s inevitable challenges, especially after 40 years,” said founder Helen Wakinyue-Nthambiri. “We meet monthly for meals, investment, and simply to laugh (and) share experiences and ideas. There are no boundaries to our often-random topics. (It’s) very therapeutic. It often brings out the little girl in each one of us, including the not-soextroverted.” Wakinyue-Nthambiri formed the group for women over age 40 in 2017. A majority of members are from overseas. The name of the group is taken from Psalm 139:14, which describes humans as fearfully and wonderfully made by God. The group is deliberately small in order to promote intimacy and trust, WakinyueNthambiri said, and a waiting list for new members has been created. As it has for the last 30-plus years, the tight-knit community of Columbia will come together to lend a hand to those in need this Christmas season. The annual Christmas Food Box Delivery will take place on Sunday, Dec. 22, thanks to the organizers - Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, along with area businesses and organizations, and the hundreds of volunteers that make this day of giving possible. Each year, members of the fraternal organizations join together, along with numerous community volunteers, to pack hundreds of boxes with holiday dinner items and additional grocery staples. Each box contains a turkey, eggs, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereals, and more. Families with children from newborn to age 10 who are not receiving Toys for Tots donations will also receive toys along with the food boxes. This year, approximately 700 boxes will be packed and delivered to families in Columbia and the surrounding area (ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575, and 17538). Families in Columbia and the surrounding area may register to receive a food box by emailing ColumbiaChristmasFoodBoxes@gmail.com or calling 717-715-3592. Families may also register in person on Fridays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 22, at Fresh Express at Park Elementary School, 520 S. Sixth St., Columbia, or on Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hands Across the Street, 291 S. Fourth St., Columbia. Email or in-person registration is encouraged for those who are able, in order to ensure accurate delivery information. The deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 29. Early registration is encouraged. In lieu of a food box, the organizations will provide a hearty Christmas dinner to the residents of area senior facilities Trinity House, St. Peters Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apartments, Brereton Manor, and Sylvan Retreat - on Sunday, Dec. 29. The meals will be prepared by members of Foresters of America and delivered by the members of the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers and other community volunteers. Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour To Feature “Urban Spirits” Theme

“Urban Spirits” will be the theme of Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, which will be offered on Oct. 25 and 26. The tour will begin and end at The Loyal Order of the Moose in Columbia and will showcase night life in Columbia from the early 1800s through the 1930s. By Chelsea Peifer
Rivertown Theatre Productions LLC will present Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26. Directors Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright said that this year’s theme, “Urban Spirits,” will showcase the night life of Columbia Borough from the early 1800s through the 1930s, covering topics including celebration, crime, evasion, and bootlegging. “This year we are stepping away from our typical spine-chilling themes of the past to cover essential parts of Columbia’s history that aren’t as dark and gory while adding an exciting and provocative twist,” Wright shared. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be available while supplies last on the evenings of the tours. The tours will begin and end at The Loyal Order of the Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia. Participants will have the opportunity to walk through two indoor venues, including the historic Samuel Miller mansion that is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour.
“Sara and I both explored the large mansion and found many treasures from its past, including saws, golf sets, and paddle balls left behind from The Baker Toy Company that used to reside where Art Printing Company is now,” relayed Wright. The “Urban Spirits” theme emerged from the many brainstorming sessions that Wright and Mimnall, who are both 2011 graduates of Columbia High School, held to prepare for the tour. This year’s crew includes 20 actors and 10 additional volunteers. Wright said the cast is energetic and comedic and has done an excellent job of breathing life into Columbia’s rich history. More than 400 people attended last year’s tours, which were themed “Mortality Within” and discussed the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days. Wright said that many people who took part in that tour said that the heartbreaking stories brought tears to their eyes. The Hempfield girls’ cross country team claimed first place in the L-L League Championship race at Ephrata on Tuesday, October 15. Meanwhile, the boy’ team finished second behind Cedar Crest, which featured five of the top-10 individual finishers in the race. The Hempfield girls actually edged Cedar Crest’s squad 91-94. The Falcons topped the Knights 36-56, while the third-place Manheim Township squad finished at 150 team points. “Coming into the season, a lot of
the sportswriters and people scouting out the season felt they were going to be the top team,” Rogers said of the Crest boys’ team. “Coming into the league meet, it seemed like their strategy paid off. Our guys gave it all they rallied and ran a good race.” Evan Eshleman’s fourth-place finish of 16:29.1 and Jack Mieskalski’s fifth-place time of 16:37.4 paced Hempfield while Gage Krall of Northern Lebanon won the race with a time of 16:17.5. “There is a good mix from seniors to freshmen on the boys’ team,” Rogers said. “They have a great chemistry within themselves and talk about strategy with one another. They’ve become students of the sport.” Giving the Knights a stronghold in the race were the times by Aidan Hodge (14th, 17:09.2), a freshmen, David Jackson (16th, 17:11.4), and Dale Winand (17th, 17:14.4). Joseph Fahrney, another freshman, made the top-25 with his time of 17:22.0 while Ethan Kline rounded out the top-40 in 17:43.0. Owen Jackson finished 46th at 17:50.0 “Jack, Evan, David and Dale plus Hodge, who was surging toward the end of the season, have done well for us.” The boys and girls will race in the District Three Class-AAA meet, which is scheduled for October 26 at Big Spring High School. “The teams are trimmed from eight
to seven runners,” Rogers explained. “Our goal is for both teams to be in the top four at districts and make it to states.” GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Following a dominant regular-season finale victory at McCaskey on Wednesday, October 16, the Black Knights rolled into the L-L League playoffs with a 14-0 record and the Section One title under their belts. Their home court was the site of a quarterfinals doubleheader on Friday as they swept Section Two’s No. three seed Ephrata 3-0. In the first half of the doubleheader at Landisville, Section Two champion Garden Spot defeated Octorara 3-0. Hempfield topped Ephrata by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-13, moving into the semifinals and hoping to clinch the L-L League title for an 18th time. Jailene Lugo and Kylie Ulrich both had six kills in the win. Allison Cummings came up with nine digs while Emma Bitner distributed 29 assists. In the McCaskey match it was Kristen Do leading the Knights with 24 assists while fellow junior Trinity Gruber poured in eight kills. Bitner and Morgan Minnich each served up four aces as Hempfield topped McCaskey 25-7, 25-11, 25-13. In the opening round of the championships on Friday, October 18 at the Hershey Racquet Club, Lehman and Cantwell bounced back nicely from a 6-1 setback to win the second set 6-4. Museum Sets Halloween Activities The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will celebrate Halloween with a day of special activities on Saturday, Oct. 26. Established in 1959, the LSO Composer’s Award recognizes and honors contemporary composers who are making a particularly significant contribution in the field of symphonic music, not only through their own creative efforts but also as effective personal advocates of new approaches to the broadening of critical and appreciative standards. Together with the Lancaster Symphony Chorus, led by William B. Wright, chorusmaster, the LSO will perform Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living.” The work will be paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. Attendees are invited to mingle with
the performers following the 8 p.m. performance. The meet-and-greet will be held at The Imperial Restaurant, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. Fall Flannel Fest Slated St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville, will host its inaugural Fall Flannel Fest on Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon to 2 p.m. The indoor event will be held in the church social hall, with entrance from the rear of the church. Attendees are encouraged to wear flannel clothing to the free afternoon of food, games, crafts, and more. There will be face painting, fall games with prizes, pumpkin painting, and a photo booth featuring a fall scene. Additionally, hot dogs, popcorn, apples, baked goods, hot cider, tea, and coffee will be available. The event will highlight more than 20 ministries, and a hot brunch will be provided. One of the ministries, The Mission Thrift Shop, has served the community for more than 40 years. Located at the back of the Grace Campus parking lot, The Mission Thrift Shop provides a venue where people may purchase clothing and household items. The Mission Thrift Shop then donates its proceeds to area missions and agencies like the Veterans Administration in Lebanon, Millersville Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW), and the Columbia Food Bank. It also disperses money to church ministries like the Garden of Grace, which is located beside The Mission Thrift Shop. The Garden of Grace began 10 years ago with the purpose of growing fresh vegetables for people in the community. Over the past decade, the Garden of Grace has delivered
more than 47,000 pounds of produce to local agencies like the Council of Churches Food Hub, Water Street Ministries, Arch Street Center, The LOFT, and MAMOW, which is housed at Millersville Community Church’s First Campus, 121 N. George St., Millersville. For 32 years, MAMOW has provided meals to seniors and others within the Penn Manor School District who are unable to prepare their own meals. Currently, it delivers daily meals to 50 residents. Other ministries that provide services for the community include Cancer Care, which offers spiritual, emotional, and household assistance and informational support to people in the church or the Penn Manor community who are experiencing a cancer struggle; The HUB, which serves Millersville University students through its free meals and Campus Cupboard food bank; and the Children’s Ministry, which offers Sunday school for children age 3 through grade six as well as many community activities like the annual Easter egg hunt and summer camps.
