It’s Potpie Supper Time! By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Mountville Lions Club will hold its annual fall potpie supper on Saturday, Oct. 19, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. Main St., Mountville. The sit-down menu of allyou-can-eat chicken potpie, coleslaw, pepper cabbage, peas, and rolls will be available at 3 p.m. Quarts of potpie accompanied by coleslaw will go on sale earlier in the day. “One change we made in the spring, that we’ll stick with, was to start selling takeouts at 11 a.m.,” said Lions member Eric Weaver. “A lot of people like to pick it up after running errands on a Saturday to enjoy for lunch, and we’re trying to make it available a little earlier.” Whether customers eat in or take their meals to go, they may purchase homemade desserts a la carte. “(We will have) lots of great pies and cakes,” Weaver said. The event will last until sold out, which Weaver reported is typically about 6 p.m. “On good days, it’s earlier,” he said. The club will also have Lions brooms available for purchase. Weaver noted that the brooms had traditionally been manufactured by vision-impaired

Takeouts will be available at 11 a.m., and the sit-down meal will start at 3 p.m. people but are now made by local Amish craftspersons. Proceeds from the supper and the brooms will be used to support club projects. “We do (the potpie supper) because it’s such a good, steady fundraiser for us,” Weaver said. “We have tried over the years to develop new fundraisers but haven’t found one that delivers for
us like the potpie supper.” The Lions also host game stands at the Mountville Days Carnival and the Washington Boro Tomato Fest. “Consistently, the best vehicle to raise funds for our mission of service is still the spring and fall potpie suppers,” Weaver remarked. Thanks to the group’s fundraising efforts, the Lions donated two new grills for picnickers at Mountville Community See Lions Club Potpie pg 6

holidays wreath-laying ceremony at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC). “When it was over, many graves didn’t have a wreath on them. The Scouts asked why all graves weren’t honored with a wreath,” Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans recalled. “ We researched and found out all wreaths are privately donated, and we decided our troop should help to get wreaths sponsored.” Troop members have worked hard in the ensuing years to collect sponsorships, and last year, 40,000 graves at IGNC had a wreath.
