What’s Happening During Hempfield’s Homecoming Week?

Kim Zimmerman, who founded City Gate with her husband, Brian, noted that although the ministry’s locations - Lancaster, Lititz, Ephrata, and Columbia - are all decorated to resemble comfortable living rooms or coffee shops, with books, coffee, and water available, each City Gate location has developed its own personality, with some being more business minded and others being partnership focused. The Zimmermans first envisioned City Gate in Lancaster city in 2006. The pair was training in a prayer ministry, and they felt a call from God to use what they were learning outside the church walls. In 2007, they rented a basement room in a former Lancaster hotel. “We started meeting with the homeless community,” said Zimmerman. “Every Friday night, we had three or four hours of just prayer and worship, and we were seeing amazing things happen. We were connecting with the community.” See City Gate pg 3

omecoming festivities will return to Hempfield High School (HHS). On Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m., the junior and senior girls’ powderpuff teams will go head-to-head on the football field, and the homecoming king will be crowned during halftime. On Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m., the homecoming football game against Cedar Crest will begin, and the homecoming queen will be announced during halftime. The homecoming dance will occur on Saturday, Oct. 9, at HHS.

The homecoming queen candidates are Camryn Ackerman, Avalynn Baer, Julia Kauffman, Jonna Spangler, and Nadia Walter. The homecoming king candidates are Noah Felty, Jack Kirchner, Anthony McAlpine, and Parker Wolfe. Camryn Ackerman is the daughter of Courtney and Chris Ackerman of Mountville. At school, Camryn participates in the spring musical, Dance Theatre, senior girls dance, Mini-THON, and powderpuff. She is also a member of Sisterhood and chamber choir. Outside school, Camryn dances at Encore Dance Center. Following
graduation, she plans to study music education and eventually become a music teacher. Avalynn Baer is the daughter of Jennifer Baer of Lancaster and the late Steve Baer. At school, Avalynn participates in powderpuff and is on the girls’ basketball team. She has also been involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Anchor Club. Outside school, she is a member of the AAU basketball club for Lady Raiders and Team PA. Following graduation, she plans to attend college to study communications and play basketball. Julia Kauffman is the daughter of
Jennifer and Kevin Kauffman of Mountville. At school, Julia is captain of the varsity cheerleading team and participates in powderpuff. Outside school, she is a cheerleader for the LA-Allstars. Following graduation, she plans to attend college to study business. Jonna Spangler is the daughter of Rose and John Spangler of Landisville. At school, Jonna is a member of the varsity club and is on the girls’ lacrosse team. She also participates in MiniTHON and powderpuff. Following graduation, she plans to attend college to study early childhood education.

City Gate from pg 1 During a worship service in the early days of the Lancaster location, a man walked in and sank to the floor, asking Zimmerman to sing “Amazing Grace.” When she finished, he told her that he had been sober for seven years, but that he had been fighting temptation that night. “(He said), ‘If you had not been here (then his voice trailed off).’” recalled Zimmerman. After only about a year at that location, the building was condemned, and Zimmerman said she felt God calling her to take a drive on Duke Street. She came across a new rental property that became the ministry’s downtown location. “That’s what happens,” said Zimmerman. “God provides buildings and finances every time we move to a new location.” Zimmerman noted that City Gate works with the strengths and aptitudes of those who donate their time at each location. “We ask those who volunteer what they feel called to do,” she said, noting that intercessory prayer, Bible ministry, and time for creative art activities are all part of the mix. “In Lancaster,
because of the pandemic, we are the Sunday location where people get lunch,” she said. Although each location is unique, Zimmerman noted that the underlying mission is the same. “It’s always based in prayer, and there is always some type of service being done,” she said, adding that City Gate has hopes to do more as God provides. “A bigger vision would be to have facilities where the homeless can come get a good night’s rest and wash their clothes,” said Zimmerman. Scouts, Amvets Plan Ride For Wreaths Boy Scout Troop 64, based in Rohrerstown, and Amvets Riders Post 19 are teaming up to hold a Ride for Wreaths on Saturday, Oct. 9, to garner wreath sponsorships for Wreaths Across America. Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization that honors veterans and their families by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves for the holidays. Troop 64 and Post 19
would like to garner enough sponsorships to pay for the 44,000 wreaths needed at Indiantown Gap as well as 2,000 wreaths for several other local cemeteries. For the girls’ volleyball program at Hempfield, historically first place has been..., well, a familiar place. This season, the Black Knights have dug in to make certain of the ongoing tradition. With their 3-0 defeat of Conestoga Valley on Thursday, September 23, the Knights improved to 6-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Addison Leber registered eight kills for Hempfield, who posted winning scores of 25-16, 25-11, and 25-18. Allison Cummings, the team’s leader in digs with 12, served up four aces. Joslene Morgan added three blocks while Melody Butzer dished out 28 assists. GIRLS’ SOCCER With her goal in the 44th minute of the game, Penn Manor’s Carolyn Hinkle gave her team all the offense it needed to defeat Hempfield in a Section One girls’ soccer match on Tuesday, September 28. The Black Knights (2-8-1 overall) launched 14 shots on goal to no avail. Hempfield goalie Emileigh Antesberger recorded four saves. Three days earlier the story was very similar in a heartbreaker at Dallastown. The Wildcats won the nonleague match 1-0 on a second-half goal. FOOTBALL The Knights came away with a 27-21 victory on the road, Sept. 24, defeating Warwick and improving to 3-2 on the year.

The Knights pulled ahead for a 20-14 halftime lead and tacked on a third-quarter touchdown. Cam Harbaugh was involved in the scoring of all four Hempfield touchdowns. He sent a spiral into the hands of Adam Acker for a 33-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Cannon Biscoe booted the extra point to make it 7-7. The Warriors had drawn first blood, scoring on Jack Reed’s 56-yard scoring pass to Cooper Eckert. Harbaugh scored on three rushing touchdowns, two of which were sandwiched around another touchdown pass by Reed - this one a 19-yarder to Ryan Fink in the second stanza. Harbaugh rushed for 208 yards on 27 carries and the three TD’s. He also put up 145 passing yards on eight completions. Acker caught six for 84 yards. Andy Garcia had a 58-yard reception and Stephen Katch carried the ball 15 times for 85 yards. Reed also had a good night, completing 15-of-26 pass attempts. The Warwick quarterback gained 242 yards through the air and threw for three TD’s. GOLF Sawyer Marten finished second with a one-over-par 71 on Monday, September 27, playing in the L-L League Championships at Honey Brook Golf Club. Marten finished two strokes behind Manheim Township’s Emmett Kappesser. Tyler Mitchell of Warwick was third with a 72 while Elle Overly, also of Warwick, won the girls’ championship with a score of 79. Marten’s Hempfield teammates Ethan Green (89) and Matthew McCullough (92) were also on the leader board. Lampeter-Strasburg won the team championship by one stroke over Township, 308 to 309. GIRLS’ TENNIS Hempfield responded to its first loss of the season by beating Ephrata and Donegal in girls’ tennis. The loss was a 5-2 setback against Section One rival Manheim Township on Friday, September 24. Three days later, the Knights topped Ephrata 70 in a league match. The next day Hempfield posted a 7-0 road victory over Donegal. The Knights improved to 11-1 on the year (6-1 league). Alex Gregory bounced back from a 6-2 loss to MT to win the next two sets and claim a team point for Hempfield at number three singles. Lydia Sullivan won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles. In the Ephrata match, Sophie Carson and Grace Lehman won the first doubles easily, 8-1. Gregory and Sullivan were 8-2 winners at second doubles while Sabrina DeLeon and Megan Wendell proved to be a winning combination at third doubles, 8-5. Lehman (6-1, 6-1) and Gregory (61, 6-1) were straight set singles winners with Carson’s 6-4, 3-6, 12-10 victory sandwiched in between. Sullivan won the fourth singles 6-0, 6-2.

The singles lineup in the Donegal match had Sullivan (6-3, 6-4) at first singles followed by Gregory (6-3, 62) Carson (6-4, 6-2) and Lehman (60, 6-0). Carson and Lehman blanked their number one doubles opponents 8-0. Sullivan and Gregory grabbed an 83 win while Wendell and DeLeon triumphed 8-2. FIELD HOCKEY Looking to climb in the standings, Hempfield (6-5-1 overall) posted a solid 1-0 victory over Conestoga Valley on Wednesday, September 29 with Karly Bervinchak scoring off a Keira Boensch assist in the second period. The Buckskins dominated in terms of opportunities, which meant that goalie Eryn Murphy (4 saves) was able to step up and do the job time and time again. A strong defense and Murphy’s goaltending (7 saves) helped clinch another 1-0 victory two days earlier as Hempfield topped Warwick on the road. Liz Williams scored for the Knights at the 8:02 mark of the first quarter, giving her team the eventual margin of victory. These close victories were on the heels of a 2-1 setback at Manheim Township on Thursday, September 23. The goal by Kenna Price (Mauren Krauser assist) at the 9:56 mark of the fourth quarter got Hempfield close, but not enough. Murphy recorded seven saves in goal. BOYS’ SOCCER The Knights improved to 5-1-0 in the L-L League with a huge 3-1 victory over Section One rival Penn Manor on Tuesday, September 28. The previous week, the Knights had suffered a loss to Warwick - the team with whom they share first place in the section. Therefore, this was a crucial win to keep pace with the Warriors. In Tuesday’s win at home, Hempfield out-shot Penn Manor 9-3. Luke Kramer assisted on Hempfield’s first goal and made it 2-0 at the 34th minute of the match, capitalizing on an assist from Nate Schwartz made it 1-0 at the midway mark of the first half. Kramer scored off a Jase Colino assist to give the Knights a 2-0 halftime edge.
After the Comets had cut the lead in half on a Zach Erb goal with five minutes to play, the Knights responded as Nathan Leisure gave his team the 3-1 winning margin. Noah Felty made two saves to preserve the win. In a non-league loss to Dallastown on Saturday, September 25, Leisure’s goal (Schwartz assist) put the Knights on the board. The 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match did not hold up as the Wildcats scored the equalizer 30 minutes later and went ahead to stay 16 minutes into the second half. Matthew Roth was in goal for Hempfield, grabbing two saves.

Celebrating The Scary (And Hairy) Albatwitch BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you’re ever driving down the road in the early hours of the morning and you see a small, manlike creature peeking out of the woods, don’t worry. It’s just the albatwitch. Sightings of “Albie” have been reported for years, and there are newspaper accounts going back more than a century of groups searching for the creature, said Chris Vera. Vera, along with Rick Fisher, will celebrate this unique part of Columbia’s history at the eighth annual Albatwitch Festival. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St. Fisher got the idea for the event after visiting the Mothman Festival in West Virginia. “I came back and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat to have something like this in Columbia?’” he recalled. Vera and Fisher thought the albatwitch, a sort of “baby Bigfoot,” would make the perfect subject for a festival. Each year, the festival has grown, Vera said. The event will feature live music, more than 40 food and artisan vendors, lectures and author visits. Vera will also lead trolley tours that will take groups through town
to learn about the albatwitch and Columbia history. Rumor has it that the albatwitch loves apples (his name comes from the phrase “apple snitch”), so trolley riders will also have the opportunity to line up and throw apples into the woods to feed the creature. In the evening, Vera will offer haunted trolley tours, and he recalled one particularly scary encounter a few years ago. “The trolley stopped, and everyone on the trolley looked out into the dark, and we saw pairs of red eyes staring at us,” he said. Fisher, who is known for his ghost hunting prowess and had his own encounter with the albatwitch a few years ago, will be a lecturer at the festival. He’ll be joined by other experts in the field of unexplained events and cryptozoology, the term given to the search for and study of animals whose existence is disputed. “There have been 11 sightings of the albatwitch within a 5-mile radius of here,” Fisher noted, adding that people come up to him year after year at the festival to relate their own sightings. Visitors come to the festival from as far away as Oregon, with many repeat attendees.

The successful candidate primarily performs routine laboratory analysis and related tasks under the supervision of the Operations Manager. Responsibilities:
Clean and maintain wastewater laboratory and equipment, perform water and wastewater laboratory analysis on process and quality control tests, collect samples from various MAWSA locations, communicate test results to the licensed operators, perform other duties as required; including all MAWSA departments.
