Musical Will Share Story Of Famous Hymn
The Broadway musical “Amazing Grace” will come to Lancaster in a concert experience, presented by Servant Stage Company. This marks the first production of the show since its Broadway run at the Nederlander Theater in 2015 and subsequent national tour. The production will run on Friday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 17, on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster.
Servant Stage noted that it will be the first theater company outside of Broadway and the national tour to present this show. Executive director Johnathan Bauer also mentioned that Servant Stage is working with playwright and composer Christopher Smith to offer this event.
“Amazing Grace” is based on the true story behind the wellknown hymn. The story and music are presented by an ensemble of nearly 50 performers and a 13-piece orchestra in this concert version of the musical.
The cast features Adler Roberts as John Newton, Kayla Klase as Mary Catlett, Joshua William Green as Thomas/Pakuteh, Robert Bigley as Captain Newton, Jeannette Wehye as Nanna/Katumah, Duane Hespell as Major Gray, and Lindsey Grimble-Adams as Princess Peyai. Wally Calderon serves as artistic director, Reji Woods as assistant director, and Joe Sharick as musical director.
All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices, as part of Servant Stage’s mission to make the arts accessible to everyone in the community. To reserve tickets or for more information, visit www.servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255.

Flowers and objects are the subjects of the paintings to be displayed in Marion Weachter’s “Flowjects.”
Marion Weachter’s latest collection of artwork will be on display at Mulberry Art Studios, 19 to 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. “Flowjects” will open with a First Friday reception on Oct. 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. and run through Sunday, Oct. 31.
“Flowjects” features flowers and objects, and Weachter said she chose this title for her exhibit because it sounded edgy while also perfectly describing the pieces that make up this collection. In painting the works to be exhibited, she felt challenged to create oneof-a-kind pieces of art.
Weachter was born and raised in West Willow and moved to Manheim in 2012. As a child, she dreamed of going to art school, but she did not realize this dream and did not think about art for many years in her young adulthood. Then came some difficult years, as Weachter lost both her parents and her spouse. She rediscovered her love of art at a paint night in 2015. She had never painted with acrylics before this outing and found she liked the medium, so she continued to learn by watching instructional video on YouTube from artists such as The Art Sherpa and Cinnamon Cooney.
Mulberry Art Studios offers free parking in its private lot. For more information, visit www. mulberryartstudios.com.
You’re Invited To Sing “Messiah”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Handel composed “Messiah” in the 1740s, he wanted it to be performed as a concert, said Tom Berdos, director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. With that desire in mind, Berdos is inviting singers in the Mount Joy area to join him for a performance of the piece in December. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church, 1215 E. Main St., beginning on Oct. 6.
Berdos is looking for all voice parts for the concert, which will be presented with a full orchestra he assembled and will run about 70 minutes. He noted that the church can accommodate up to 90 singers and that people have returned year after year to perform the piece. In 2018, he held the concert in the metro New York area of New Jersey, and a group from there will Zoom in for rehearsals and perform live at the December concert.
Berdos said he does not hold auditions for the performance, but rather leaves it up to people to know their voice part and capabilities. “Some people come to the first or second rehearsal and think, ‘I’m not sure I can do this,’ but I encourage them to keep coming back,” he stated. “It’s a real sense of accomplishment when it all comes together.”
