CONSERVATION CONVERSATION

Samantha was born. After learning that Samantha had the 2i version of LGMD, the Brazzos launched a foundation to promote treatments and a cure. In order to raise funds, the family, which lives in the Hempfield School District, has hosted a game night for seven years and held a golf outing for the first time last year. “When we get our cure, we’ll keep doing (the game) night for other causes,” Kelly remarked. Through the two events last year, CureLGMD2i brought in more than $50,000. That money helped the organization give a $60,000 grant to the University

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day will be observed on Sunday, Sept. 30, and CureLGMD2i Foundation vice president Kelly Brazzo, who co-founded the organization with her husband, Keith, is excited. “It will be the first time we’re all gathering under one umbrella,” Kelly ex plained. “There are more than 30 types of LGMD, and they’re continuing to be diagnosed.” The Brazzos have gained an incredible knowledge of LGMD in the decade since their daughter

of Massachusetts medical school, which is working with humanized mouse models to test gene therapy. In the past year, Kelly traveled to the school, where she helped to create a 2i steering committee composed of researchers, pharmaceutical developers, and people with 2i from all around the world. The foundation has also given about $140,000 to a clinical trial at Kennedy Krieger. The first human trial of a myostatin inhibitor has produced no negative side effects, but positive impacts have not yet been reported, Kelly said. She added that the foundation is considering See CureLGMD2i Foundation pg 8

Taking Strides Toward A Cure

Church To Host Pet Celebration

There is not much good news when it comes to pancreatic cancer, but the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is making strides to change that. The national patient advocacy organization has been creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure since it was founded in 1999. “At one time, no one really knew much about pancreatic cancer,” said Lancaster County resident Jill Snyder, whose husband, Aaron Shiley, died from the disease in December 2010. “That has changed in recent years, and today there are so many great resources.” Pancreatic cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, and the five-year survival rate is still in the single digits at See PanCAN pg 4

Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will host the third annual Community Pet Celebration Day along with a Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. According to the Rev. Clifton D. Eshbach, pastor of Holy Spirit, the event is a time to celebrate pets and the love they give their human families. “We want to share with our neighbors a fun event that will celebrate the happiness pets provide and to give them a blessing for the coming year,” he said.
