Jeffrey Kauffman has lived in Lancaster all of his life, he is anything but a homebody. Although the longtime hiker and nature enthusiast has kayaked along the Susquehanna River and covered every trail in the Pequea Valley, his love for the outdoors has led him to extraordinary places around the globe. Kauffman has seen wild horses on Assateague Island, grizzly bears in Alaska and coyotes at Yellowstone, and he plans on taking a polar bear tour in Antarctica this fall. His passion for photography, however, began five years ago at Conowingo Dam. “I’ve always loved wildlife,” said Kauffman. “Five years ago, I bought a camera to take pictures of the eagles at Conowingo Dam and I just fell in love with it.” Although Kauffmanprimarily worked in commercial refrigeration for the last 20 years, his passion for photography and observing wildlife has yielded him several awards and hundreds of breathtaking shots. Last year, he won the Conowingo eagle photography contest, and his entry for the 2022 Audubon Photography

The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at a new location, VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.Theclub will host Charles Brooking, who served as a PT boat machine gunner in the Pacific. With his father’s permission, Brooking enlisted in the Navy when he was 17. He saw combat duty near the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal, and during World War II, he manned twin .50 caliber machine guns on PT-223, PT619, PT-621, and PT-617 boats. He served two years active/combat service and later eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Now 95 years old, he resides in Bloomsburg. The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of each month except December. All World War II veterans and family and anyone with an interest in WWII history are invited to attend. Anyone who is a WWII veteran or who has a family member or friend who would like to share their experiences at a future meeting may call 717-319-3430.
Participants in the memorial will scale the steps of the stadium as they wind around its interior five times, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each participant traditionally carries an image of a first responder who was killed on the day of the attack as he or she endures the long climb. “Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.” Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11. Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of duty. “The stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad. for the event contribute the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, visit stairclimb.org/.https://lancaster

nonprofit founded in 2020 by Matt Millhouse and Sean Laukhuff to benefit children in central Pennsylvania who need prosthetics. The tournament is also held as a memorial to honor the people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks. “We will be raising a 38by-22-foot flag by two cranes,” said Laukhuff. The flag ceremony will also include an honor guard of veterans from various branches of the military and the singing of the national anthem by a professional entertainer. Members of the honor guard will also perform a flag-folding ceremony following the tournament. The post-tournament ceremony will include the playing of taps by a bugler. During the tournament, bagpipe music will be provided to enhance the Scottish atmosphere of the course, Laukhuff noted, adding, “We are bringing in a female Navy pilot who happens to play the bagpipes, and she’ll play for about an hour and a half.” Along the course, participants will have opportunities to win prizes at certain holes, with the awards sponsored by Dixon Golf. The tournament will also feature a box lunch for participants, along with heavy hors d’oeuvres, live acoustic music, a silent auction and door prizes. Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $38,000, and Laukhuff has set a lofty goal for this year. “We’re hoping to raise $50,000,” he said. “Last year’s tournament was very well received, and it couldn’t have gone any smoother. We’re going to make each year bigger and better.”Tournament sponsorships are from Lancaster Nissan, Lanco Federal Credit Union and Penlanco Federal Credit Union, with an in-kind gift from AAA Vacuum & Sewing Center. Driving along Route 462 in Columbia, one sees a striking feature rise above the horizon. It’s the main gate of Glatfelter Memorial Field. “This is a landmark when you come into Columbia,” said Bill Kloidt, president of the Glatfelter board of directors. “It’s one of the first things you see when you’re on Lancaster Avenue, and it’s a neat sight to behold.” Now, the gate needs your help.
Constructed 86 years ago, the structure is in need of repairs, and the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust is in the midst of a solicitation drive to restore the entryway, located at 1249 Lancaster“We’veAve.been inspecting the structure over the last couple of years and doing patchwork repairs,” Kloidt said. “We noticed that it could soon fall into deeper disrepair and become a liability, so we knew we needed to do more.”
Built in 1936, the brick entranceway has been structurally compromised by rain, snow and the expansion and contraction of ice that has seeped behind the walls. Large vertical and horizontal cracks, displacement of limestone panels and cracked and stained brick veneer are all visible and in need of repair. The restoration will also include the removal, powder coating and replacement of the six entranceway gates. In total, the board estimates the project will cost $82,000. As Kloidt emphasized, Glatfelter Memorial Field has a long history. It was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression, giving unemployed citizens an opportunity to get back to work. At that time, in addition to the main gate, a grandstand was constructed, and the grading of a football field, a baseball field and tennis courts was completed. Landscaping on the grounds included dwarf maple trees and large sycamore trees, many of which still stand today. When the facility was completed, it was dedicated to the memory of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was killed in a car accident during his first assignment at Fort Dix, N.J. His father, David L. Glatfelter, donated the land to memorialize his Overson.the years, the field has hosted Columbia’s semiprofessional football team in the 1960s and the closing ceremonies of both the 1938 Columbia thebration.ColumbiaCelebrationSesquicentennialandthe1988BicentennialCele-InSeptemberof2002,Trustplantedtreesincollaboration with the Columbia Shade Tree Commission to honor the first anniversary of 9/11.Today, the property includes five baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts that have been converted into a street hockey rink, a track and a pavilion. Since the early 1960s, the field has also served as the home of the Columbia Boys Athletic Association (CBAA), and Kloidt noted that the goal is to complete the repairs before the start of the CBAA football season this fall. He encourages anyone with ties to Columbia to consider supporting the restoration project. “So many people have shared great memories at that field,” he stated. “We’re asking for their support to preserve this lovely structure for many years to come.” For more information or to make a donation, contact Kloidt at 717-201-5134 or wkloidt@aol.com.

On the first Friday of August, Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, hosted the opening of local artist Tama Etra’s collection titled “Mixed Bag.” The display featured multiple pieces that utilize materials like leftover junk mail and unwanted magazines to create an array of mixed-media collages.Primarily working with acrylic paints for most of her career, Etra began exploring the world of collaging and mixed-media work over the last 10 years. “Mixed Bag” also includes an acrylic painting and several alcohol ink pieces and showcases the artist’s work beyond the conventional. Etra was born and raised in New York, where she studied commercial art at New York Technical College and had her artwork displayed in multiple galleries. In addition to her work as an artist, Etra pursued a career as a counselor specializing in women with addictions, where she used her love for the arts to help clients benefit from connecting with creative expression. She moved to Lancaster in 2005, where she continues to leave her mark on numerous different mediums. Etra will teach classes at Mulberry Art Studios this fall. The “Mixed Bag” collection showcases one of many types of talent that have been featured at Mulberry Art Studios. The creative space has served as a host for artists of all kinds for nearly 35 years, welcoming painters, musicians, dancers and sculptors, and even contributing to the start of the First Friday tradition downtown. “My vision was to transform the city of Lancaster using creative arts and positive self-expression,” said founder and owner April Koppenhaver. “As a little girl, my family traveled around the country, and I saw several vacant warehouses in decay. Artists always need space to exist, so it was a nobrainer. I wanted to present all of the arts under one roof.” Koppenhaver herself is a writer, photographer and painter, and she hopes Mulberry Art Studios will serve as a model for cities across the country to foster the arts in their “There’scommunities.alotof excitement about the city and a lot of history. I want people to keep recognizing and investing in the artists that helped to transform it into such a desirable place to live,” Koppenhaver said. “Thirty-five years ago, it was not this way. Big industries were not investing in the city, and artists affected Lancaster for the better.”

Lee, who created Lifecycles in 2015, said he’s continually impressed with the dedication and drive of the riders. “I know how hard some of them had to push in order to finish,” he stated. “Not one boy or girl quit. Everybody rode every single mile.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, created Lifecycles to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. From April through August, boys’ and girls’ teams ride one night a week throughout Lancaster County.Although the season is wrapping up, the teams will continue with five weekend rides through October. The organization currently serves 130 teens in what Lee calls “overflowing” teams. “We want our teams to be large enough to provide a sense of community, but small enough to keep it safe and manageable,” he stated. He hopes to be able to increase the number of teams next year but noted that more leaders will be needed to do that. “We’ve been very blessed by more leaders joining us this year, and we’re going to need even more to continue,” he remarked, adding that’s he’s confident the right people will step up. “We live in an area where people really want to give back to their community.” In the meantime, he marvels at the success of the Summer Challenge Rides and the effort put in by the riders. “In eight years, nobody has quit along the way,” he said. “That’s a testimony to the teens and also to the quality of our leaders out there on those rides with them.”For more information about Lifecycles, contact Lee at cyclesteam.org..orgdirector@lifecyclesteamorvisitwww.life
This summer, teams of teens took to the streets on bikes as part of Lifecycles, a Christian-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. Five teams participated in Summer Challenge Rides, which took them on trips ranging from six to 14 days long.“This is the most Challenge Rides we’ve ever done,” said Lee DeRemer, Lifecycles director. “We had more girls and boys in our program who were ready for a week way and were up for strenuous riding. We also had enough leaders willing to sacrifice a week of their time to do this.” In total, the five rides included 42 teens and 30 adult leaders. One girls’ team and two boys’ teams participated in weeklong 300-mile rides from Jersey Shore, Pa., to Niagara Falls. On those rides, participants passed by the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal Historic Trail. Additionally, one boys’ team rode 330 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The fifth ride was the longest, featuring a boys’ team that rode 825 miles over two weeks from Niagara Falls to Lubec, Maine. “They went to the Eastern-most point in the United States,” Lee noted. “They were the first people in the country to see the sunrise that morning.”

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic (inherited) condition – it is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age. For each trait a person inherits, there are usually two genes; one gene comes from each parent. People with Alpha-1 have received two abnormal alpha-1 antitrypsin genes. One of these abnormal genes came from their mother and one from their father.
Alpha-1 is a rare disease that is even more rarely diagnosed, with over 90% of patients thought to be undiagnosed. Alpha-1 is the #1 known genetic risk factor for COPD and may be a contributing cause for up to 3% of COPD cases in the United States. The featured image depicts the male and female flickers’ technique in feeding their young; the birds would take turns retrieving food while the other stood guard by the entrance to the nest, ready to resume feeding. “The process they had to go through to feed their chicks was amazing. There were several hawks in the area preying on other birds, so they needed to be vigilant,” Kauffman said. He took several hundred shots over the course of a couple weeks before capturing both birds in one frame, utilizing a special technique to add a unique flair to the image. A new camera, equipped with a rolling shutter, gives a curved appearance to objects in motion, a method Kauffman likes to use when portraying the fluid motion of the subject’sKauffmanwings. also emphasized the ease with which anyone can look out for wildlife in their local areas. “Wherever you live, the internet makes it easy to get connected and help out,” Kauffman said. “When I was in Maryland, I came across an injured raccoon on the road. I didn’t know anything about the area but searched for the nearest rescue center. After I called, they were able to send someone out rightForaway.”more information on Kauffman and his photography, visit https://kauffman .photo/.

Landis Quality Living is in the process of raising at least $550,000 to bring down the amount needing to be financed, making it possible for at least eight of the apartments to be available at lowercost rents.
