It’s not uncommon for a father to refer to his child as “one of a kind,” but it’s no exaggeration when Greg Mitstifer uses that phrase to describe his son, Gavin.
Born with two rare genetic disorders, Gavin continues to make progress thanks to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development.
The 9-year-old from Hummelstown will be doing double duty during the 37th annual Rubber Duckie Race & Festival, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. at 625 Community Way, Lancaster.
In addition to serving as a Schreiber ambassador, Gavin and his dad, Greg, will attempt to successfully defend their title in the 1-mile Duckie Dash race.
“I think Gavin has a particular interest in the festival,” Greg said. “It’s because it has a race. Gavin is very competitive. Any chance he has to go fast and to be fast against other people, he will always take it.”
Gavin and Greg share that competitiveness trait, and last year the duo won Greg’s age group in a trike, which allows Gavin to contribute by pedaling while Greg pushes from the back.

The American Quilter’s Society (AQS) QuiltWeek show is not your grandmother’s quilt display. It’s a full-on celebration of creativity, color and craftsmanship that will leave even non-quilters in awe.
“People will be blown away by what they see,” shared Michelle Renee Hiatt, director of AQS. “People who don’t quilt may have an image in their mind of what a quilt looks like, but they will be surprised by what these quilts look like. Even if you are not a quilter, if you have a love of art and fiber, it’s worth coming to the show to see the talent that’s out there.”
The QuiltWeek show will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 13, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The show will feature workshops, lectures, special events and more.
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
“There will be classes in color, technique, appliqué, fabric painting,” Hiatt said. “We also offer classes to learn how to quilt on domestic, sit-down longarm and longarm machines. Those are classes you don’t often see.”
Many of the instructors offer kits for sale, and the machines necessary to work on the projects will be on-site, she said.
“This is also an excellent opportunity to learn,” she noted. “If you are thinking about purchasing a sewing machine, this gives you the perfect opportunity to try all these machines and see what’s right for you. There are all levels of classes. There’s
visitors should park at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road.
“It’s going to be a great social event,” Post 34 financial officer Frank Judd said.
“You’ll get to meet other people who are interested in these cars, like a lot of us are. People will have a good time, and they’ll see the best. They’re also going to be supporting the American Legion Post 34. We have a lot of activities for veterans.
We also have a Sons of the American Legion (group), we have an auxiliary, and we have the Riders. We have a pretty diverse group of people for members, plus we have a social membership. This goes to support any activities we do to support the veterans. We do activities in various veterans’ hospitals, plus it’s a great place for veterans to meet other veterans and get the kind of social support that some of them need.”
Sponsors will choose the winners of more than 20 trophies. There will be door prizes.
Post 34’s kitchen will be open during the event.
Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.
In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.
• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.
• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.
• Store ammunition separately and securely.
• Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access.

The Legion will sell T-shirts. DJ Eric Godfrey will provide music.
“I’d like to make sure everybody comes out and supports the legion,” member Bill Eckman said. “We’re a 501(c)(3) (charity). We depend a lot on different things to raise money to help us support veterans across the county, across the state, and the nation. Everyone’s invited. Please come out and have a good time and enjoy yourself.”
Barry Harsh, one of the event organizers, provided a friendly warning for participants. “One thing I do want to stress is when the people leave, no burnouts or the show will not happen next year,” he said. “Police have been informed because they have to be informed of the car show, and they’re going to be right on top of it. So if anybody gets out of line, they will be knocking on our door, and that will be it.”
“It’s the best food there is,” Legion member Chuck Husted said. There will also be a special area selling hot dogs, snacks, and beverages. Alcoholic beverages must remain inside the Legion building.
Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a benefit dinner and a concert on Saturday, Aug. 16.
The dinner will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the church’s Worship & Event Center and will raise money to help self-employed painter Chris Lambert pay for medical and living expenses during his recovery from a work fall that resulted in serious injuries.
The menu will include lasagna, garlic bread, tossed salad, white and chocolate cake, and cold beverages. The dinner will be by donation, and checks can be made payable to the church with “Lambert” written on the memo line.
Entertainment will be provided by violinist Kaleb Lambert, who is the son of Chris and the grandson of Lenny Lambert, a member of the congregation.

After the dinner, the Allegro Chamber Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. to kick off the church’s 2025-26 Starlight Tea Concert Series.
The concert theme, “Seasons of Life,” will showcase familiar tunes, such as show tunes from “Porgy and Bess,” “Oliver!” and “Wicked,” as well as works by Dan Forrest and David Bennett Thomas and “Lux Aeterna” from Michael John Trotta’s Requiem.
The Allegro Chamber Singers are directed by Jon Clemens and accompanied by Monica Hochstedler Carlson. The group rehearses and performs in the summer months only, since many of the singers perform with other groups during the rest of the year.
Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received. Tea and cookies will be served following the concert. For more information, contact planning committee chair Giny Mackey at 717-201-8450.

Gavin is deaf but has a cochlear implant and hearing aid and communicates through sign language. When asked his favorite part of the festival, he said being able to race with his dad. Gavin pointed out they are both fast and then pointed to his bicep to indicate he is also strong. Presented by sponsor Lancaster Toyota, the Rubber Duckie Race & Festival will open at 2 p.m. with welcome remarks by Matt Barcaro. The Duckling Dash 100-meter fun run for kids will be held at 3:30 p.m. The Duckie Dash 1-mile race for all abilities will start at 4 p.m. The race winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m. New this year, the Duckie Dash will include a corporate team division, where local organizations race together in friendly competition for the inaugural Duckie Cup.
There will also be pony rides, arts and crafts, games, and a DJ. The event, which will be held rain or shine, is free, but visitors must purchase tickets to play the games.
Food vendors will include Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Cupcakes by Casey, Walk-O Taco, and Mad Chef Craft Brewing.
Duckies are available for adoption through the day of the event. Race registration will remain open until one hour prior to each race. Go to https:// www.schreiberpediatric .org/event/duckies/ for more information.
“Accessibility and inclusion remain central to the event design,” Schreiber marketing and communications manager Lexi Cahill said. “The grounds will offer sensory-friendly spaces and inclusive activities all in a mobility-aid accessible area, ensuring every guest can participate fully, regardless of age or ability. Through this vibrant celebration, the community comes together to support Schreiber’s mission: helping children, teens, and young adults with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries achieve their fullest potential.”
Greg and his wife, Christie, are just two of the par-
ents who are appreciative of Schreiber’s work. “We’re not able to quantify or really adequately explain what they’ve done,” Greg said. “They genuinely changed Gavin’s life, and it’s not just from a what else is he able to do perspective. He does progress in therapy incredibly, but it’s also how it helps keep him healthy overall. They help him get stronger. They help him communicate better, but they also help him just remain healthier. ... For us being part of the ambassador group is a chance to share Gavin’s story and be an example for folks so that they can see what’s possible. I’d say probably more importantly, it’s to help raise funds. It’s to help advocate and encourage people to donate to these types of programs because without financial support from the public, they simply cannot do what they do.”
Christie added, “I think it’s important that we were honored to be an ambassador family because we can also share this resource with other families.”
Gavin was born with a neuromuscular condition and with the shapes of his bones “a little bit off,” Christie said. “We’ve seen a lot of specialists in Gavin’s lifetime, and no one has a playbook for us ... which can be a good thing and a bad thing. One, there’s no playbook, but two, there’s no playbook, which means we get to make our own playbook. And we get to partner with people like the folks at Schreiber that help us create that playbook.”
Greg noted, “I think one (condition) is very rare, and the second is extremely rare, so it’s not hyperbole to say that Gavin is likely one of a kind.”
It takes 35 minutes for the family to travel to Schreiber. “We’ve chosen Schreiber over those other resources,” Christie said. “It’s important that we let other people know that there are other options out there than just the more obvious, bigger things that people hear about all the time.”
The Mitstifers first made the trip five times a week, but now go twice for physical therapy since Gavin has been progressing. Gavin will undergo surgery in August to lengthen his hamstrings, shorten his quads, and stretch out his hips, with the hope he will become more flexible and his knees will be straighter.
Schreiber has been working with Gavin to prepare for the surgery and helped the family get a wheelchair that will aid his recovery. “It’s difficult to know what the longterm outcome will be,” Greg said. “We focus on constant improvement. You need something to work for it, but goals can also be limiting. They become ceilings. So when people ask me what the goal is for Gavin, I always say 800-meter finals in districts unless he wants to do a different event. I don’t want different for Gavin than what any other parent wants for their kid.”
something there for each person.”
National instructors will offer classes, and hundreds of quilts will be on display throughout the show, including just under 400 contest quilts in eight categories as well as almost 300 special exhibit quilts.
“The variety and quality of these quilts is incredible,” Hiatt said. “It’s really inspiring to see all the different types - modern, hand-quilted, machinequilted, applique, piecing.
No matter what type of quilter someone perceives themselves to be, they will find quilts similar to their tastes as well as quilts that will push them to start thinking outside the box.”
Instructors will include nationally known quilters Sue Cleveland and Nancy Mahoney, along with a variety of unique exhibits.
“Pay attention to the quilt exhibit by the Two of
Us,” Hiatt recommended of the exhibit featuring works by Pat Holly and Sue Nickels. She also highlighted “Beyond Tradition,” which includes abstract quilts on loan from the National Quilt Museum. Another exhibit will spotlight a creativity challenge that began last year when members were invited to create artwork on seven-inch blocks, all with the theme “My Dream (fill in the blank) Cabana,” resulting in 75 pieces that have been hung together.
“It’s quite striking to see,” she said. “The pieces are small, but the amount of work that went into them is impressive.”
More than 100 vendor booths will be on-site at the show, highlighting local, national and international participants.

their grandson.
“Our goal is to make sure quilters receive the recognition they deserve,” Hiatt said. AQS holds four shows a year, including one at its headquarters in Paducah, Ky., and awards thousands of dollars in prizes annually. Other sites are chosen for their impact on the fiber-arts industry and attract people from all over the country.
“Lancaster is one of those shows. It’s a destination show for a lot of people,” Hiatt explained. “We have bus tours that come in from New England just for this show.” While the Paducah show draws upwards of 35,000 visitors, Hiatt noted that Lancaster’s show typically brings in up to 17,000 people.
“Lancaster is our only non-convention-center show,” Hiatt said, noting that the Nook has proven to be an ideal location. “The
lighting is fantastic, and the floor, which is used for sporting events, is easier to stand on than concrete. Many of our attendees and vendors remarked on the comfort of the floor.”
Lancaster’s long tradition of fiber arts also makes it an ideal location for the show, she said.
“We always look for areas that have a high demographic of quilters,” she stated. “We are always looking to move forward with promoting what our founders set out to do: give national recognition to quilters and their work.”
Hiatt recommended registering early for classes as they fill up quickly. Tickets for admission to the show may also be purchased in advance or on-site. For details on QuiltWeek and registration information, visit www.americanquilter .com and click on the “Shows and Contests” tab.
