The Power Of A Pup UDS Service Dogs Plans Annual Fundraiser

ased in Lancaster County, the United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is committed to helping seniors and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Today, over 350 employees serve people with disabilities and the aging population in 40 counties across Pennsylvania.

UDS provided services to more than 6,000 people last year alone.

Over the course of 56 years, UDS has developed a wide variety of services and programs, including accessible home modifications, care management, custom wheelchair seating, and service dogs. The second annual golf outing for the UDS Service Dogs will be held on Friday, Aug. 20, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster.

On Aug. 20, golfers may check in beginning at 7:30 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A luncheon is set for 1:30 p.m.

There will be prizes, giveaways, and a silent auction featuring a Kalahari Resort overnight stay and play package, a Troy Polamalu autographed Pittsburgh Steelers helmet, a Pittsburgh Steelers golf bag, a Darius Rucker autographed acoustic guitar, a balloon ride for two, and more.

Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets.

Some of the world’s top female tennis players will participate in the only professional tennis tournament in Pennsylvania this summer.

After its cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge, a U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit event, will return to the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 9, and end on Sunday, Aug. 15.

Many of the world’s current and potential future stars will compete in the event. The players will compete in singles and doubles for a purse of $100,000 - the largest in the tournament’s 14-year history.

Philadelphia. Currently, the organization is creating a pilot program to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines.

At the golf tournament, the organization will premiere a video highlighting the Pups In Prison program. In the program, 4month-old puppies go to maximum security prisons for training with carefully screened inmates.

The program gives inmates the opportunity to give back to their communities, as well as the chance to enjoy the affection and companionship that dogs are so eager to share with their humans. The video will focus on the story of one dog raised by an inmate who was released and currently resides in Canada. The dog is now serving in a school district. The video will show viewers how the Pups In Prison program impacted the inmate’s life and the lives of those that the dog now serves.

“If you’re a golfer, this a beautiful way to come out and support a worthy cause and the efforts of the UDS service dog program,” said Lori Breece, manager of the Service Dog Training Program at UDS. “I’ve seen miracles with the power of a pup. It’s quite amazing to see how life-changing a dog can be.”

In a building off Erisman Road in Manheim, a team of volunteers is bringing the past back to life. Members of the Erisman Mennonite Church have been working to restore the Lincoln School, located across the street from the church at 8 S. Erisman Road.

They will host an open house on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Lincoln School was built in 1884 as a one-room school and was used until 1952, when it was sold by Rapho Township to the church. It served as a home for pastor John Eby and his wife, who remodeled it for residential use and lived in it until selling it back to the church in 1985. Although the property has housed Sunday school classes, youth group activities and the Erisman sewing circle, congregants were inspired when fellow church member Tina Snyder suggested that the congregation restore the

eral original posts have been used to rebuild the porch and an original cabinet has been restored. The team is also working on rebuilding the bell tower and will install a bell purchased from another schoolhouse.

Nissley, who is the public works director for Mount Joy Borough, said the project has been a labor of love, noting that the volunteers partnered with contractors for some of the work but did the majority themselves. “This really did pull us together as a church and gave everybody a chance to work together,” he stated. “I see this place being used for a variety of reasons. I see it being made available to other groups and used as a ministry for our church.”

As the renovations were happening, the volunteers noticed that the road the church faces is used heavily by bicyclists, so they are also installing a bike rest stop next to the schoolhouse. It will feature a bike repair station, a water fountain, seating and a

prayer garden.

Nissley invites everyone to come out to the open house and see the transformation firsthand. “We did an open house back before we started the work, and a lot of neighbors stopped in,” he recalled.

“I hope people will come out to this open house and see everything that’s been done to the place.”

Church member Dennis Nissley, whose background includes historic restoration construction work, knew he wanted to help.

“It had been a vision of mine for many years to try to do something with the building,” he remarked, noting that his father attended school at the site.

Nissley led a team of volunteers that started work in early 2020. Although the pandemic stalled the project a bit, the group has spent most of the past year tearing down drywall, ripping up carpets and rebuilding windows to their original size. Volunteers ripped out a lowered ceiling and restored it to its original height. The team also installed a handicapped-accessible ramp and restroom, removed the kitchen and installed a kitchenette, added air conditioning and renovated the existing bathroom. Fête Will Keep Cemetery In The Black The Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. You can help preserve that history by attending Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery.

The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a bring-your-own-picnic from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event was inspired by similar local fundraisers, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Friends group. “We saw the Fête en Blanc, which is held in Lancaster, and we thought, ‘What a cool idea,’” she recalled. “Since we’re doing this in a cemetery, we decided to do Fête en Noir and encourage people to wear black.”

Looking at the calendar this year, the Friends saw that a Friday the 13th will occur in August, and they thought it made the perfect date for the event. Participants should bring their own picnic food to the Fête en Noir and should

also make reservations as a group, Hohenadel noted, adding, “We’ll reserve tables and seat people by their group, whether it’s a group of four or a group of eight, or whatever size.” Music will be provided by a DJ, and participants will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor or stroll the grounds and take in the cemetery’s beauty.

“It will be a wonderful opportunity to have an outside picnic with friends or family in a unique setting,” Hohenadel stated. “It’s starting early enough that there will be enough daylight if you want to walk around through the cemetery and look at the interesting tombstones and statuary and enjoy the history that’s there, or you can just sit and socialize with your friends and enjoy the music.”

The event was not held last year due to the pandemic, but it drew about 80 people in 2019, Hohenadel said. She hopes to increase attendance this year, noting that the event helps the Friends group support the cemetery. Along with the admission charge, there will be other fundraising opportunities happening throughout the event, she stated.

Enjoy Small-Town Fun At Salunga Community Picnic

In 1941, the Salunga Methodist Church, which later joined with Mount Joy Methodist Church to become Chiques United Methodist Church, relocated its Sunday school picnics because board members did not think they were serving the community well. The picnics, which had previously been held at amusement parks, were not highly attended due to the cost of transportation. As a result, members of the Salunga Methodist Church met with Salunga residents and formed a committee dedicated to planning a community picnic for friends and family at a location in or near Salunga. The first community picnic was held on Aug. 6, 1941. The weather was clear and warm, music was provided by the Lititz High School marching band, and the committee supplied attendees with coffee, iced

tea, and ice cream. It was estimated that about 800 people attended the event in 1941, which was a bigger turnout than the committee had expected.

After its cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 79th annual Salunga Community Picnic will return this summer. The event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Although the picnic is named for its location, attendance is open to everyone, regardless of residency.

“This is a really nice opportunity to dial things back to the basics, spend some quality time with family, and catch up with old friends,” stated committee member Stacey Cooper.

The picnic will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with guessing games and giveaways. A

After weighing community input, a national search, an extensive interview process, and witnessing his service as interim chief over the past seven months, Bey was appointed to his new role effective immediately.

Bey spent 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as captain, director of Training Division.

During his career he also served as director of Heritage Affairs and Recruit-

ment and Special Services, and emergency planning liaison officer to the PA Emergency Management Association. Bey has overseen patrol and investigative divisions.

Additionally, in November 2020, he retired as first master sergeant, superintendent of financial services for the U.S. Air Force Reserves and PA Air National Guard managing a budget of more than $300 million.

The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is the largest police department in Lancaster County, with 139 sworn officers.

Tim Landis retired from his role as president of Creative Ministries Inc./WJTL on June 30. Landis has a long history as a promoter of Christian music locally, nationally, and internationally. He promoted his first Christian concert in 1975 and founded Creative Ministries in 1984.

In 2004, Landis was awarded the Gospel Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Upon his retirement, Landis will take on the new title of president emeritus. Fred McNaughton, former general manager, became the president/CEO of Creative Ministries Inc./WJTL.

“Most of the funds are raised locally, and we couldn’t do that without our main sponsors,” stated tournament director Wilson Pipkin. “It’s exciting to know that our local community could come together and we could raise funds to offer this free event.”

A program that Pipkin would like to introduce to the tournament this year is “Serving Up Aces.” Pipkin plans to contact about 70 to 80 sponsors, asking them to donate $1 for every ace that will be hit during the tournament. “All of the money from this will go to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which serves about 350 families within the Hempfield School District,” said Pipkin.

This year’s wildcard was awarded to pro tennis player Alexa Glatch from Newport Beach, Calif. Glatch has been playing tennis since she was 5 years old and went professional at the age of 15. “It’s been a long journey, lots of ups and downs,” said Glatch.

Within the past couple months, the Reese-Hall Mountville VFW Post 8757 and VFW Auxiliary Post 8757 have honored past and present members of the armed forces.

From June 12 to June 26, participants in the 13th annual PA Hero Walk traveled from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to fundraise for Pennsylvania veterans. When the group passed through Mountville on June 16, the Mountville VFW and VFW Auxiliary provided hospitality and a donation.

Since the PA Hero Walk began in 2009, the group has raised over $2.5 million for Pennsylvania veterans.

“Let me tell you about the people at the Mountville VFW, ... They are awesome,” said Dave Rapacchietta, representative of the PA Hero Walk. “For the past 13 years, they’ve treated us to a delicious dinner and night of friendship and comradery.”

Additionally, the Mountville VFW and VFW Auxiliary

honor veterans through tribute street banners titled “Honoring Our Veterans.” Each banner, measuring 20 inches by 40 inches, includes a military picture of a service member, along with his or her name, rank, branch, and dates of service. Members of the VFW Auxiliary expressed their gratitude to the Mountville Borough for sponsoring the creation and distribution of these banners.

“We’ve gotten many compli-

ments on the banners, and we’re very happy with how they turned out,” said Bob Froelich, commander of the Mountville VFW. The Mountville VFW and VFW Auxiliary welcome new members. Library Announces Agreement Of Sale The Board of Trustees of Lancaster Public Library (LPL) recently announced the agreement of sale of the library building located at 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster.

The building is under agreement to a group of investors who have strong ties to the community and who are purchasing the property for its ultimate use

by Saint James Episcopal Church, located at 119 N. Duke St. The agreement precedes the eventual move by LPL to a new library location at Barney Ewell Plaza on Queen Street. The new building is intended to improve library services to the Lancaster community with ex panded and improved interior and exterior spaces, ADA compliance, and closer proximity to the heart of downtown Lancaster. Until the new facility is ready, the library will retain ownership of and continue to operate in its current location, serving approximately 211,000 Lancaster County residents as a community center for learning, When the library’s move is complete and the sale

transaction is closed, which are both expected to occur within two years, the property may be converted to office use until Saint James has finalized its long-term plans for the building. In the meantime, Saint James will begin a discernment process to assess how the property will add to its ongoing commitment to

civic and spiritual renewal, sustainability, and community growth.

Both Saint James Episcopal Church and LPL hold deep roots in Lancaster history. The church has maintained its location on the corner of Orange and Duke streets for 275 years and includes a 200-year-old sanctuary. Readers may
